Evolution of the magnetoresistance lineshape with temperature and electric field across Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ interface

We report on the temperature and electric field driven evolution of the magnetoresistance lineshape at an interface between Ni/AlO$_x$ and Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$. This is manifested as a superposition of the Lorentzian lineshape due to spin accumulation and a parabolic background related to tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR). The characteristic Lorentzian line shape of the spin voltage is retrieved only at low temperatures and large positive applied bias. This is caused by the reduction of electric field at large positive applied bias which results in a simultaneous reduction of the background TAMR and a sharp enhancement in spin injection. Such mechanisms to tune magnetoresistance are uncommon in conventional semiconductors.

Electric Field Driven Memristive Behavior at the Schottky Interface of Nb doped SrTiO3

Computing inspired by the human brain requires a massive parallel architecture of low-power consuming elements of which the internal state can be changed. SrTiO3 is a complex oxide that offers rich electronic properties; here Schottky contacts on Nb-doped SrTiO3 are demonstrated as memristive elements for neuromorphic computing. The electric field at the Schottky interface alters the conductivity of these devices in an analog fashion, which is important for mimicking synaptic plasticity. Promising power consumption and endurance characteristics are observed. The resistance states are shown to emulate the forgetting process of the brain. A charge trapping model is proposed to explain the switching behavior.

Reentrant cluster glass and stability of ferromagnetism in Ga2MnCo Heusler alloy

We present here a detailed investigation into the magnetic ordering of full Heusler alloy Ga$_2$MnCo using dc, ac magnetization measurements, neutron diffraction and neutron depolarization experiments. Crystal structure at room temperature was first confirmed to be L2$_1$ using the highly intense synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Temperature dependent magnetization reveals that Ga$_2$MnCo enters a ferromagnetic (FM) state at $T_C = $154 K, characterized by a sharp increase in magnetization and a plateau-like region hereafter. As the temperature is decreased further, a sharp drop in magnetization is observed at $T_f$ = 50 K, hinting towards an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase change. Neutron diffraction (ND) recorded over the range of temperature from 6 to 300 K, provides combined information regarding crystal as well as magnetic structure. Accordingly, an increase in the intensity of the ND pattern is seen at 150 K, signaling onset of long range FM order. However, there is no sign of appearance of superlattice reflections corresponding to the AFM phase, in the patterns recorded below 50 K. An unusual discontinuity in the unit cell volume is seen around $T_f$ indicating a coupling of this second transition with the contraction of the lattice. Attempts to unravel this interesting magnetic behaviour using ac susceptibility measurements lead to the existence of glassy magnetism below $T_f$. Systematic analysis of the susceptibility results along with neutron depolarization measurement, identifies the low temperature phase as a reentrant cluster glass.

The anomaly of dark matter

2017 observations by Riess and coworkers have indicated that the universe is expanding some seven percent faster than the currently accepted cosmological model described. In this paper we argue that this discrepancy can be eliminated by considering a universe consisting only of matter and dark energy.

Switching from pyroelectric to ferroelectric order in Ni doped CaBaCo4O7

We report ferroelectric ordering in Ni substituted CaBaCo4O7. Magnetization showed ferrimagnetic transition at 60 K and an additional transition is found ~ 82 K, further, enhanced antiferromagnetic interactions and decrease in saturation magnetization are noticed with Ni substitution. The dielectric and pyroelectric measurements illustrate a strong coupling between spin and charge degrees of freedom; ferroelectric behavior is confirmed with enhanced ordering temperature (~82 K) and saturation polarization (250 muC/m2. Neutron diffraction has revealed an increase in c-lattice parameter in Ni sample and all the Co/Ni moments are reoriented in a- direction; evidently a non-collinear ferrimagnetic to collinear ferrimagnetic spin order is observed. The coupling between the triangular and Kagome layers weakens and leads to up-up-down-down AFM ordering in the Kagoma layer. This can be viewed as a 2D-collinear layer with unequal bond distances and most likely responsible for the switching of electric polarization.

Role of Vanadyl Oxygen in Understanding Metallic Behavior of V2O5(001) Nanorods

Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), the most stable member of vanadium oxide family, exhibits interesting semiconductor to metal transition in the temperature range of 530-560 K. The metallic behavior originates because of the reduction of V2O5 through oxygen vacancies. In the present report, V2O5 nanorods in the orthorhombic phase with crystal orientation of (001) are grown using vapor transport process. Among three nonequivalent oxygen atoms in a VO5 pyramidal formula unit in V2O5 structure, the role of terminal vanadyl oxygen (OI) in the formation of metallic phase above the transition temperature is established from the temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic studies. The origin of the metallic behavior of V2O5 is also understood due to the breakdown of pdpi bond between OI and nearest V atom instigated by the formation of vanadyl OI vacancy, confirmed from the downward shift of the bottom most split-off conduction bands in the material with increasing temperature.

Revisiting the Lamb Shift

In this paper we endeavour to determine the energy levels of an atom by virtue of the modified Dirac equation. It has been found that the energy levels contain an extra term in the expression which accounts for the {\it zitterbewegung} effects in the Compton scale. Applying our perspective to the hydrogen atom we have been able to find the {\it Lamb shift} for the $2S_{\frac{1}{2}}$ and $2P_{\frac{1}{2}}$ states. This result substantiates that a slight modification of the Dirac equation suffices to explain the phenomenon, where the modification of the Dirac equation arises due to the non-commutative nature of space-time. Besides, several other unexplained phenomena can emerge as a natural consequence of this modification

Magnetic field geometry of the large globule CB 34

We report the results of optical polarimetric observations of a Bok globule CB34 to study magnetic field structure on large scales ($10^5-10^6$ AU), which is combined with archival sub-mm observations to characterize the magnetic field structure of CB34 on small scales ($10^4 - 10^5$ AU). The optical polarization measurements indicate that the magnetic field in the globule is constrained to a maximum radius of $10^5$AU around the core, out to densities not smaller than $10^4$cm$^{-3}$. Our study is mainly concentrated on two submillimeter cores C1 and C2 of CB34. The direction of magnetic field of core C2 is found to be nearly perpendicular to the CO outflow direction of the globule. The magnetic field of core C1 is almost aligned with the minor axis of the core which is typical for magnetically dominated star formation models. The mean value of offset between the minor axis of core C2 and the outflow direction is found to be $14^\circ$ which suggests that the direction of the outflow is almost aligned with the minor axis of core C2. The magnetic field strength in the plane-of-sky for cores C1 and C2 is estimated to be $\approx 34μ$G and $\approx 70μ$G.

Localized Charge Transfer Process and Surface Band Bending in Methane Sensing by GaN Nanowires

The physicochemical processes at the surfaces of semiconductor nanostructures involved in electrochemical and sensing devices are strongly influenced by the presence of intrinsic or extrinsic defects. To reveal the surface controlled sensing mechanism, intentional lattice oxygen defects are created on the surfaces of GaN nanowires for the elucidation of charge transfer process in methane (CH4) sensing. Experimental and simulation results of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) studies on oxygen rich GaN nanowires confirmed the possible presence of 2(ON) and VGa-3ON defect complexes. A global resistive response for sensor devices of ensemble nanowires and a localized charge transfer process in single GaN nanowires are studied in situ scanning by Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). A localized charge transfer process, involving the VGa-3ON defect complex on nanowire surface is attributed in controlling the global gas sensing behavior of the oxygen rich ensemble GaN nanowires.

Topological Structure of the Vacuum, Cosmological Constant and Dark Energy

In this review we present a theory of cosmological constant and Dark Energy (DE), based on the topological structure of the vacuum. The Multiple Point Principle (MPP) is reviewed. It demonstrates the existence of the two vacua into the SM. The Froggatt-Nielsen's prediction of the top-quark and Higgs masses is given in the assumption that there exist two degenerate vacua in the SM. This prediction was improved by the next order calculations. We also considered B.G. Sidharth's theory of cosmological constant based on the non-commutative geometry of the Planck scale space-time, what gives an extremely small DE density providing the accelerating expansion of the Universe. Theory of two degenerate vacua - the Planck scale phase and Electroweak (EW) phase - also is reviewed, topological defects in these vacua are investigated, also the Compton wavelength phase suggested by B.G. Sidharth was discussed. A general theory of the phase transition and the problem of the vacuum stability in the SM is reviewed. Assuming that the recently discovered at the LHC new resonance with mass $m_S \simeq 750$ GeV is a new scalar $S$ bound state $6t + 6\bar t$, earlier predicted by C.D. Froggatt, H.B. Nielsen and L.V. Laperashvili, we try to provide the vacuum stability in the SM and exact accuracy of the MPP.

Influence of aqueous electrolytes on electrochemical performance of vertical graphene nanosheets supercapacitor electrode

Vertical graphene nanosheets (VGN) grown as controlled porous network are studied and demonstrated as a promising electrode material for supercapacitors. The VGN synthesized by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using CH4/Ar gas mixture as precursor are considered for electrochemical performance in Na2SO4, KOH, and H2SO4 to delineate the electrolyte effect. Among the electrolytes, H2SO4 exhibited excellent specific areal capacitance (188 microfarad/cm2) and good capacitance retention (96.8%). No significant change is observed in impedance spectra even after 200 cycles. An electric equivalent circuit for the system is simulated from Nyquist plot to elucidate the behavior of electrode/electrolyte interface. This potential supercapacitor electrode material is well characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and contact angle measurement. Utilization of aqueous electrolytes for potential supercapacitors is also discussed in relation to improved performance observed in H2SO4 medium.

Phase separated behavior in Yttrium doped CaMnO3

The effect of electron doping on the structural, transport, and magnetic properties of Mn (IV) - rich Ca1-xYxMnO3 (x < 0.2) samples have been investigated using neutron diffraction, neutron depolarization, magnetization and resistivity techniques. The temperature dependence of resistivity follows the small polaron model and the activation energy exhibits a minimum for x=0.1 sample. A phase separated magnetic ground state consisting of ferromagnetic domains (~7microns) embedded in G-type antiferromagnetic matrix is observed in the sample, x = 0.1. The transition to the long range magnetically ordered state in this sample is preceded by a Griffiths phase. On lowering temperature below 300K a structural transition from orthorhombic structure (Pnma) to a monoclinic structure (P21/m) is observed in the case of x=0.2 sample. The ferromagnetic behavior in this case is suppressed and the antiferromagnetic ordering is described by coexisting C-type and G-type magnetic structures corresponding to the monoclinic and orthorhombic phases, respectively.<

Invoking forbidden modes in SnO_2 nanoparticles using tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Raman forbidden modes and surface defect related Raman features in SnO_2 nanostructures carry information about disorder and surface defects which strongly influence important technological applications like catalysis and sensing. Due to the weak intensities of these peaks, it is difficult to identify these features by using conventional Raman spectroscopy. Tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) studies conducted on SnO_2 nanoparticles (NPs) of size 4 and 25 nm have offered significant insights of prevalent defects and disorders. Along with one order enhancement in symmetry allowed Raman modes, new peaks related to disorder and surface defects of SnO_2 NPs were found with significant intensity. Temperature dependent Raman studies were also carried out for these NPs and correlated with the TERS spectra. For quasi-quantum dot sized 4 nm NPs, the TERS study was found to be the best technique to probe the finite size related Raman forbidden modes.

Influence of in-plane and bridging oxygen vacancies of SnO_2 nanostructures on CH_4 sensing at low operating temperatures

Role of 'O' defects in sensing pollutant with nanostructured SnO_2 is not well understood, especially at low temperatures. SnO_2 nanoparticles were grown by soft chemistry route followed by subsequent annealing treatment under specific conditions. Nanowires were grown by chemical vapor deposition technique. A systematic photoluminescence (PL) investigation of 'O' defects in SnO_2 nanostructures revealed a strong correlation between shallow donors created by the in-plane and the bridging 'O' vacancies and gas sensing at low temperatures. These SnO_2 nanostructures detected methane (CH_4), a reducing and green house gas at a low temperature of 50 ^oC. Response of CH_4 was found to be strongly dependent on surface defect in comparison to surface to volume ratio. Control over 'O' vacancies during the synthesis of SnO2 nanomaterials, as supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and subsequent elucidation for low temperature sensing are demonstrated.

Distance estimation of some selected small Bok globules

The distance determination of small Bok globules is often difficult because of its small size and opaqueness. In this work, we determine the distances to six small Bok globules CB 17, CB 24, CB 188, CB 224, CB 230 and CB 240 using near infra red photometry (2MASS $JHK_S$ colors). The distances to these clouds are estimated to be $478 \pm 88$, $293 \pm 54$, $262 \pm 49$, $378 \pm 70$, $293 \pm 54$ and $429 \pm 79$ parsec respectively.

Effect of local structural distortions on magnetostructural transformation in Mn$_3$SnC

In this paper we attempt to understand the different nature of first order magnetic transformation in Mn$_3$SnC as compared to that in Mn$_3$GaC. The transformation in Mn$_3$SnC is close to room temperature (T$_t \approx$ 280K) and is associated with a large change in magnetic entropy that makes it a suitable candidate for applications in ferroic cooling. Using a combination of x-ray and neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy we infer that the magnetic ground state consisting of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms is due to structural distortions present in Mn$_6$C octahedra.

Infrared Spectra and Chemical Abundance of Methyl Propionate in Icy Astrochemical Conditions

We carried out an experiment in order to obtain the InfraRed (IR) spectra of methyl propionate (CH3CH2COOCH3) in astrochemical conditions and present the IR spectra for future identification of this molecule in the InterStellar Medium (ISM). The experimental IR spectrum is compared with the theoretical spectrum and an attempt was made to assign the observed peak positions to their corresponding molecular vibrations in condensed phase. Moreover, our calculations suggest that methyl propionate must be synthesized efficiently within the complex chemical network of the ISM and therefore be present in cold dust grains, awaiting identification.

Experimental and theoretical investigations on magnetic and related properties of ErRuSi

We report experimental and theoretical studies of magnetic and related properties of ErRuSi compound. Various experimental techniques such as neutron diffraction, magnetization, magneto-thermal, magneto-transport, optical have been used to study the compound. Neutron diffraction shows ferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures with moments aligned in ab plane. Neutron diffraction and magnetization data show reduction in magnetic moment, which may be due to crystalline electric field effects at low temperatures. The compound shows good magnetocaloric properties with a low field adiabatic temperature change of 4.7 K, which is larger than that of many proposed materials for magnetic refrigeration at low temperatures. Magnetoresistance shows large negative value at 8 K, which changes its sign and increases in magnitude, with decrease in temperature and/or increase in field. The positive MR at low temperatures attributed to the Lorentz force effect. The electronic structure calculations accounting for electronic correlations of the 4f electrons of Er reproduces the ferromagnetic ordering and effective magnetic moment. Interband transitions between the Ru and Er d states and Er f states in one spin projection are found to form the main features of the measured optical conductivity in this compound.
