The fate of discrete torsion on resolved heterotic Z2xZ2 orbifolds using (0,2) GLSMs

This paper aims to shed light on what becomes of discrete torsion within heterotic orbifolds when they are resolved to smooth geometries. Gauged Linear Sigma Models (GLSMs) possessing (0,2) worldsheet supersymmetry are employed as interpolations between them. This question is addressed for resolutions of the non-compact C3/Z2xZ2 and the compact T6/Z2xZ2 orbifolds to keep track of local and global aspects. The GLSMs associated with the non-compact orbifold with or without torsion are to a large extent equivalent: only when expressed in the same superfield basis, a field redefinition anomaly arises among them, which in the orbifold limit reproduces the discrete torsion phases. Previously unknown, novel resolution GLSMs for T6/Z2xZ2 are constructed. The GLSM associated with the torsional compact orbifold suffers from mixed gauge anomalies, which need to be cancelled by appropriate logarithmic superfield dependent FI-terms on the worldsheet, signalling H-flux due to NS5-branes supported at the exceptional cycles.

Taming Triangulation Dependence of T6/Z2xZ2 Resolutions

Resolutions of certain toroidal orbifolds, like T6/Z2xZ2, are far from unique, due to triangulation dependence of their resolved local singularities. This leads to an explosion of the number of topologically distinct smooth geometries associated to a single orbifold. By introducing a parameterisation to keep track of the triangulations used at all resolved singularities simultaneously, (self-)intersection numbers and integrated Chern classes can be determined for any triangulation configuration. Using this method the consistency conditions of line bundle models and the resulting chiral spectra can be worked out for any choice of triangulation. Moreover, by superimposing the Bianchi identities for all triangulation options much simpler though stronger conditions are uncovered. When these are satisfied, flop--transitions between all different triangulations are admissible. Various methods are exemplified by a number of concrete models on resolutions of the T6/Z2xZ2 orbifold.

Uncovering a Spinor-Vector Duality on a Resolved Orbifold

Spinor-vector dualities have been established in various exact string realisations like orbifold and free fermionic constructions. This paper aims to investigate possibility of having spinor-vector dualities on smooth geometries in the context of the heterotic string. As a concrete working example the resolution of the T4/Z2 orbifold is considered with an additional circle supporting a Wilson line, for which it is known that the underlying orbifold theory exhibits such a duality by switching on/off a generalised discrete torsion phase between the orbifold twist and the Wilson line. Depending on this phase complementary parts of the twisted sector orbifold states are projected out, so that different blowup modes are available to generate the resolutions. As a consequence, not only the spectra of the dual pairs are different, but also the gauge groups are not identical making this duality less apparent on the blowup and thus presumably on smooth geometries in general.

Constraint on Spinor-Vector Dualities in Six Dimensions

Imprints of spinor-vector dualities have been uncovered in various string constructions. They are typically induced by changing certain free general GSO phases in the underlying string partition functions. This paper shows that spinor-vector dualities in six dimensions are constrained by a fundamental effective field theory consistency condition, namely that any six dimensional low energy theory must be free of irreducible SO(2N) anomalies. Aspects of spinor-vector dualities are analysed in four six-dimensional free fermionic models which are distinguished by two generalised GSO phases. In addition, the constraint on the number of spinors and vectors is confirmed on generic spectra which may occur in K3 line bundle compactifications of the heterotic E8xE8 string.

Wilsonian Dark Matter in String Derived $Z^\prime$ Model

The dark matter issue is among the most perplexing in contemporary physics. The problem is more enigmatic due to the wide range of possible solutions, ranging from the ultra-light to the super-massive. String theory gives rise to plausible dark matter candidates due to the breaking of the non--Abelian Grand Unified Theory (GUT) symmetries by Wilson lines. The physical spectrum then contains states that do not satisfy the quantisation conditions of the unbroken GUT symmetry. Given that the Standard Model states are identified with broken GUT representations, and provided that any ensuing symmetry breaking is induced by components of GUT states, leaves a remnant discrete symmetry that forbid the decay of the Wilsonian states. A class of such states are obtained in a heterotic-string derived $Z^\prime$ model. The model exploits the spinor-vector duality symmetry, observed in the fermionic $Z_2\times Z_2$ heterotic-string orbifolds, to generate a $Z^\prime\in E_6$ symmetry that may remain unbroken down to low energies. The $E_6$ symmetry is broken at the string level with discrete Wilson lines. The Wilsonian dark matter candidates in the string derived model are $SO(10)$, and hence Standard Model, singlets and possess non-$E_6$ $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ charges. Depending on the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking scale and the reheating temperature they give rise to different scenarios for the relic abundance, and in accordance with the cosmological constraints.

The LHC di-photon excess and Gauge Coupling Unification in Extra $Z^\prime$ Heterotic-String Derived Models

The di-photon excess observed at the LHC can be explained as a Standard Model singlet that is produced and decays by heavy vector-like colour triplets and electroweak doublets in one-loop diagrams. The characteristics of the required spectrum are well motivated in heterotic-string constructions that allow for a light $Z^\prime$. Anomaly cancellation of the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ symmetry requires the existence of the Standard Model singlet and vector-like states in the vicinity of the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking scale. In this paper we show that the agreement with the gauge coupling data at one-loop is identical to the case of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, owing to cancellations between the additional states. We further show that effects arising from heavy thresholds may push the supersymmetric spectrum beyond the reach of the LHC, while maintaining the agreement with the gauge coupling data. We show that the string inspired model can indeed account for the observed signal and discuss the feasibility of obtaining viable scalar mass spectrum.

Heterotic free fermionic and symmetric toroidal orbifold models

Free fermionic models and symmetric heterotic toroidal orbifolds both constitute exact backgrounds that can be used effectively for phenomenological explorations within string theory. Even though it is widely believed that for Z2xZ2 orbifolds the two descriptions should be equivalent, a detailed dictionary between both formulations is still lacking. This paper aims to fill this gap: We give a detailed account of how the input data of both descriptions can be related to each other. In particular, we show that the generalized GSO phases of the free fermionic model correspond to generalized torsion phases used in orbifold model building. We illustrate our translation methods by providing free fermionic realizations for all Z2xZ2 orbifold geometries in six dimensions.

Spectral flow as a map between N=(2,0)-models

The space of $(2,0)$ models is of particular interest among all heterotic-string models because it includes the models with the minimal $SO(10)$ unification structure, which is well motivated by the Standard Model of particle physics data. The fermionic $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic-string models revealed the existence of a new symmetry in the space of string configurations under the exchange of spinors and vectors of the $SO(10)$ GUT group, dubbed spinor-vector duality. Such symmetries are important for the understanding of the landscape of string vacua and ultimately for the possible operation of a dynamical vacuum selection mechanism in string theory. In this paper we generalize this idea to arbitrary internal rational Conformal Field Theories (RCFTs). We explain how the spectral flow operator normally acting within a general $(2,2)$ theory can be used as a map between $(2,0)$ models. We describe the details, give an example and propose more simple currents that can be used in a similar way.

Proton Stability in $SU(5)\times U(1)$ and $SU(6)\times SU(2)$ GUTs

We consider explicit unified models based on the flipped ${SU(5)\times U(1)}$ and $SU(6)\times SU(2)$ gauge groups in which gauge mediated proton decay operators are suppressed at leading order due to the special placement of matter fields in unified multiplets. We discuss both the theoretical structure and phenomenological implications of these models. For the latter, we examine the viability of the physical spectrum in each scenario and focus on the possible presence of other operators that could also contribute significantly to the proton decay rate.

Light Z' in Heterotic String Standard-like Models

The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC supports the hypothesis that the Standard Model provides an effective parameterisation of all subatomic experimental data up to the Planck scale. String theory, which provides a viable perturbative approach to quantum gravity, requires for its consistency the existence of additional gauge symmetries beyond the Standard Model. The construction of heterotic--string models with a viable light $Z^\prime$ is, however, highly constrained. We outline the construction of standard--like heterotic--string models that allow for an additional Abelian gauge symmetry that may remain unbroken down to low scales. We present a string inspired model, consistent with the string constraints.

Investigation of Quasi--Realistic Heterotic String Models with Reduced Higgs Spectrum

Quasi--realistic heterotic-string models in the free fermionic formulation typically contain an anomalous U(1), which gives rise to a Fayet-Iliopolous term that breaks supersymmetry at the one--loop level in string perturbation theory. Supersymmetry is restored by imposing F- and D-flatness on the vacuum. In Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008) 046009, we presented a three generation free fermionic standard-like model which did not admit stringent F- and D-flat directions, and argued that the all the moduli in the model are fixed. The particular property of the model was the reduction of the untwisted Higgs spectrum by a combination of symmetric and asymmetric boundary conditions with respect to the internal fermions associated with the compactified dimensions. In this paper we extend the analysis of free fermionic models with reduced Higgs spectrum to the cases in which the SO(10) symmetry is left unbroken, or is reduced to the flipped SU(5) subgroup. We show that all the models that we study in this paper do admit stringent flat directions. The only examples of models that do not admit stringent flat directions remain the strandard-like models of reference Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008) 046009.

Spinor-Vector Duality in Heterotic String Orbifolds

The three generation heterotic-string models in the free fermionic formulation are among the most realistic string vacua constructed to date, which motivated their detailed investigation. The classification of free fermion heterotic string vacua has revealed a duality under the exchange of spinor and vector representations of the SO(10) GUT symmetry over the space of models. We demonstrate the existence of the spinor-vector duality using orbifold techniques, and elaborate on the relation of these vacua to free fermionic models.

Classification of the chiral Z2XZ2 fermionic models in the heterotic superstring

The first particle physics observable whose origin may be sought in string theory is the triple replication of the matter generations. The class of Z2XZ2 orbifolds of six dimensional compactified tori, that have been most widely studied in the free fermionic formulation, correlate the family triplication with the existence of three twisted sectors in this class. In this work we seek an improved understanding of the geometrical origin of the three generation free fermionic models. Using fermionic and orbifold techniques we classify the Z2XZ2 orbifold with symmetric shifts on six dimensional compactified internal manifolds. We show that perturbative three generation models are not obtained in the case of Z2XZ2 orbifolds with symmetric shifts on complex tori, and that the perturbative three generation models in this class necessarily employ an asymmetric shift. We present a class of three generation models in which the SO(10) gauge symmetry cannot be broken perturbatively, while preserving the Standard Model matter content. We discuss the potential implications of the asymmetric shift for strong-weak coupling duality and moduli stabilization. We show that the freedom in the modular invariant phases in the N=1 vacua that control the chiral content, can be interpreted as vacuum expectation values of background fields of the underlying N=4 theory, whose dynamical components are projected out by the Z2-fermionic projections. In this class of vacua the chiral content of the models is determined by the underlying N=4 mother theory.

Superstring Phenomenology in Light of LEP, KamLAND and WMAP

The experimental data of the past decade suggests that the quantum gravity vacuum should possess two key ingredients. The existence of three generations and their embedding in SO(10) representations. The Z2XZ2 orbifold of the heterotic string provides examples of vacua that accommodate these properties. The utilization of string dualities to explore these models is discussed. Classification of the Z2XZ2 orbifold with geometric shifts on complex manifolds demonstrates that three generations are not obtained solely with symmetric shifts on complex tori, but necessarily utilize an asymmetric shift or a nonperturbative breaking of the GUT gauge group. The issue of mass and mixing spectrum in the neutrino versus the quark sector is discussed.

Towards the classification of Z2XZ2 fermionic models

We develop a formalism that allows a complete classification of four-dimensional Z2XZ2 heterotic string models. Three generation models in a sub-class of these compactifications are related to the existence of three twisted sectors in Z2XZ2 orbifolds. In the work discussed here we classify the sub-class of these models that produce spinorial representations from all three twisted planes, and including symmetric shifts on the internal lattice. We show that perturbative three generation models are not obtained solely with symmetric shifts on complex tori, but necessitate the action of an asymmetric shift. In a subclass of these models we show that their chiral content is predetermined by the choice of the N=4 lattice. The implication of the results and possible geometrical interpretation are briefly discussed.

Nonperturbative flipped SU(5) vacua in Horava-Witten theory

There is good support for the embedding of the Standard Model fermions in the chiral 16 representation of SO(10). Such an embedding is provided by the realistic free fermionic heterotic-string models. In this talk we demonstrate the existence of solutions with 3 generations and SO(10) observable gauge group, in the case of compactification on a torus-fibred Calabi-Yau space over a Hirzebruch base surface. The SO(10)symmetry is broken to SU(5)xU(1) by a Wilson line. The overlap with the realistic free fermionic heterotic-string models is discussed.

Phenomenology of Non-Abelian Flat Directions in a Minimal Superstring Standard Model

Recently, we presented the first non-Abelian flat directions that produce from a heterotic string model solely the three-generation MSSM states as the massless spectrum in the observable sector of the low energy effective field theory. In this paper we continue to develop the systematic techniques for the analysis of nonrenormalizable superpotential terms and non-Abelian flat direction in realistic string models. Some of our non-Abelian directions were F-flat to all finite orders in the superpotential. We study for the same string model the varying phenomenologies resulting from a large set of such all-order flat directions. We focus on the quark, charged lepton, and Higgs doublet mass matrices resulting for our phenomenologically superior non-Abelian flat direction. We review and apply a string-related method for generating large mass hierarchies between MSSM generations, first discussed in string-derived flipped SU(5) models, when all generational mass terms are of renormalizable or very low non-renormalizable order.

A Minimal Superstring Standard Model I: Flat Directions

Three family SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y string models in several constructions generically possess two features: (i) an extra local anomalous U(1)_A and (ii) numerous (often fractionally charged) exotic particles beyond those in the minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM). Recently, we demonstrated that the observable sector effective field theory of such a free fermionic string model can reduce to that of the MSSM, with the standard observable gauge group being just SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y and the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged spectrum of the observable sector consisting solely of the MSSM spectrum. An example of a model with this property was shown. We continue our investigation of this model by presenting a large set of different flat directions of the same model that all produce the MSSM spectrum. Our results suggest that even after imposing the conditions for the decoupling of exotic states, there may remain sufficient freedom to satisfy the remaining phenomenological constraints imposed by the observed data.
