Towards String Predictions

The aim of superstring phenomenology is to develop the tools and methodology needed to confront string theory with experimental data. The first mandatory task is to find string solutions which reproduce the observable data. The subsequent goal is to extract potential signatures beyond the observable data. Recently, by studying exact flat directions of non-Abelian singlet fields, we demonstrated the existence of free fermionic heterotic-string models in which the $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)_Y$-charged matter spectrum, just below the string scale, consists solely of the MSSM spectrum. In this paper we study the possibility that the exact flat directions leave a $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ symmetry unbroken at the Planck scale. We demonstrate in a specific example that such unbroken $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ is in general expected to be not of the GUT type but of intrinsic stringy origin. We study its phenomenological characteristics and the consequences in the case that $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ remains unbroken down to low energies. We suggest that observation in forthcoming colliders of a $Z^\prime$, with universal couplings for the two light generations but different couplings for the heavy generation may provide evidence for the $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold which underlies the free fermionic models.

Non-Abelian Flat Directions in a Minimal Superstring Standard Model

Recently, by studying exact flat directions of non-Abelian singlet fields, we demonstrated the existence of free fermionic heterotic-string models in which the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged matter spectrum, just below the string scale, consists solely of the MSSM spectrum. In this paper we generalize the analysis to include VEVs of non-Abelian fields. We find several, MSSM-producing, exact non-Abelian flat directions, which are the first such examples in the literature. We examine the possibility that hidden sector condensates lift the flat directions.

A Minimal Superstring Standard Model II: A Phenomenological Study

Recently, we demonstrated the existence of heterotic--string solutions in which the observable sector effective field theory just below the string scale reduces to that of the MSSM, with the standard observable gauge group being just SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y and the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged spectrum of the observable sector consisting solely of the MSSM spectrum. Associated with this model is a set of distinct flat directions of vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of non-Abelian singlet fields that all produce solely the MSSM spectrum. In this paper, we study the effective superpotential induced by these choices of flat directions. We investigate whether sufficient degrees of freedom exist in these singlet flat directions to satisfy various phenomenological constraints imposed by the observed Standard Model data. For each flat direction, the effective superpotential is given to sixth order. The variations in the singlet and hidden sector low energy spectrums are analyzed. We then determine the mass matrices (to all finite orders) for the three generations of MSSM quarks and leptons. Possible Higgs mu-terms are investigated. We conclude by considering generalizations of our flat directions involving VEVs of non-Abelian fields.

D-term Spectroscopy in Realistic Heterotic-String Models

The emergence of free fermionic string models with solely the MSSM charged spectrum below the string scale provides further evidence to the assertion that the true string vacuum is connected to the Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold in the vicinity of the free fermionic point in the Narain moduli space. An important property of the Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold is the cyclic permutation symmetry between the three twisted sectors. If preserved in the three generations models the cyclic permutation symmetry results in a family universal anomalous U(1)_A, which is instrumental in explaining squark degeneracy, provided that the dominant component of supersymmetry breaking arises from the U(1)_A D-term. Interestingly, the contribution of the family--universal D_A-term to the squark masses may be intra-family non-universal, and may differ from the usual (universal) boundary conditions assumed in the MSSM. We contemplate how D_A--term spectroscopy may be instrumental in studying superstring models irrespective of our ignorance of the details of supersymmetry breaking. We examine the possible effect of the intra--family non--universality on the resulting SUSY spectrum and the values of the strong coupling, effective weak mixing angle and W-gauge boson mass, up to a two loop accuracy, in the two models (universal and non-universal). We find that non universality relaxes the constraint of color and charge breaking minima which appears in the universal case. In addition, it predicts a 3% smaller value of α_s due to different threshold masses obtained in the latter scenario. Finally, we present the experimentally allowed predictions of the two models in an M_0 and M_{1/2} parameter space.

String derived MSSM and M-theory Unification

The recent conjecture of possible equivalence between the string scale $M_S$ and the minimal supersymmetric standard model unification scale M_U ~ 2.5 x 10^{16} GeV is considered in the context of string models. This conjecture suggests that the observable gauge group just below the string scale should be SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y and that the SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y-charged spectrum of the observable sector should consist solely of the MSSM spectrum. We demonstrate that string models can actually be constructed that possess these observable features. Two aspects generic to many classes of three family SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y string models are both an extra local anomalous U(1)_A and numerous (often fractionally charged) exotic particles beyond the MSSM. Thus, for these classes, the key to obtaining an M_S = M_U ~ 2.5 x 10^{16} GeV string model is the existence of F- and D-flat directions that near the string scale can simultaneously break the anomalous U(1) and give mass to all exotic SM-charged observable particles, decoupling them from the low energy spectrum. In this letter we show, in the context of free fermionic strings, that string models with flat directions possessing these features do exist. We present one such string derived model in which all such exotic observable states beyond the MSSM receive mass at the scale generated by the Fayet- Iliopoulos term. The associated F- and D-flat direction is proven flat to all orders of the superpotential.

Reply to Comment on "Duality of x and psi in Quantum Mechanics"

The content of the comment [hep-th/9712219] is the derivation of Eq.(13) in Phys. Rev. Lett. 78 (1997) 163 by direct differential calculus: which is precisely the same method we used to derive it (it is in fact difficult to imagine any other possible derivation).
