Nuclear constraints on the EoS and rotating neutron stars

In this contribution nuclear constraints on the equation of state for a neutron star are discussed. A combined fit to nuclear masses and charge radii leads to improved values for the symmetry energy and its derivative at nuclear saturation density, $S_{\rm{v}}= 31$ MeV and $L=68\pm 8$ MeV. As an application the sensitivity of some properties of rotating supramassive neutron stars on the EoS is discussed.

Nuclear Drell-Yan effect in a covariant model

We investigate effects of nuclear medium on antiquark distribution in nuclei applying the results of a recently developed relativistically-covariant self-consistent model for the pion and the isobar. We take into account Fermi motion including Pauli blocking and binding effects on the nucleons and medium effects on the isobar and pion leading to modest enhancement of the pion light-cone-momentum distribution in large nuclei. As a consequence the Drell-Yan cross-section ratio with respect to the deuteron exceeds one only for small values of the light-cone momentum.

Atomic Electric Dipole Moments: The Schiff Theorem and Its Corrections

Searches for the permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of diamagnetic atoms provide powerful probes of CP-violating hadronic and semileptonic interactions. The theoretical interpretation of such experiments, however, requires careful implementation of a well-known theorem by Schiff that implies a vanishing net EDM for an atom built entirely from point-like, nonrelativistic constituents that interact only electrostatically. Any experimental observation of a nonzero atomic EDM would result from corrections to the point-like, nonrelativistic, electrostatic assumption. We reformulate Schiff's theorem at the operator level and delineate the electronic and nuclear operators whose atomic matrix elements generate corrections to "Schiff screening". We obtain a form for the operator responsible for the leading correction associated with finite nuclear size -- the so-called "Schiff moment" operator -- and observe that it differs from the corresponding operator used in previous Schiff moment computations. We show that the more general Schiff moment operator reduces to the previously employed operator only under certain approximations that are not generally justified. We also identify other corrections to Schiff screening that may not be included properly in previous theoretical treatments. We discuss practical considerations for obtaining a complete computation of corrections to Schiff screening in atomic EDM calculations.

Schiff Theorem and the Electric Dipole Moments of Hydrogen-Like Atoms

The Schiff theorem is revisited in this work and the residual $P$- and $T$-odd electron--nucleus interaction, after the shielding takes effect, is completely specified. An application is made to the electric dipole moments of hydrogen-like atoms, whose qualitative features and systematics have important implication for realistic paramagnetic atoms.

Covariant propagator of the Rarita-Schwinger field in the nuclear medium

A formalism for representing the fully relativistic propagator of the Rarita-Schwinger field in the nuclear medium is developed. Using a convenient basis for expanding the propagator, or the self energy, it is shown that they can be represented by 40 energy and momentum dependent quantities which can be combined into a 2x2 and a 6x6 matrix. In this way calculations reduce to matrix multiplication. Using the presented formalism the full relativistically covariant contribution of the pion-nucleon loop to the isobar self energy and propagator in isospin-symmetric spin-saturated nuclear medium is computed. Utilizing this propagator the photoabsorption cross-section on in-medium nucleons in the isobar region is calculated and the result compared with experimental data.

On the nuclear symmetry energy and the neutron skin in neutron-rich nuclei

The symmetry energy for nuclear matter and its relation to the neutron skin in finite nuclei is discussed. The symmetry energy as a function of density obtained in a self-consistent Green function approach is presented and compared to the results of other recent theoretical approaches. A partial explanation of the linear relation between the symmetry energy and the neutron skin is proposed. The potential of several experimental methods to extract the neutron skin is examined.

Nuclear Equation of State and Neutron Star Structure

The hadronic equation of state for a neutron star is discussed with a particular emphasis on the symmetry energy. The results of several microscopic approaches are compared and also a new calculation in terms of the self-consistent Green function method is presented. In addition possible constraints on the symmetry energy coming from empirical information from the neutron skin of finite nuclei are considered.

Bulk Viscosity in Neutron Stars from Hyperons

The contribution from hyperons to the bulk viscosity of neutron star matter is calculated. Compared to previous works we use for the weak interaction the one-pion exchange model rather than a current-current interaction, and include the neutral current $nn \leftrightarrow nΛ$ process. Also the sensitivity to details of the equation of state is examined. Compared to previous works we find that the contribution from hyperons to the bulk viscosity is about two orders of magnitude smaller.

Neutrino emission in neutron stars

Neutrino emissivities in a neutron star are computed for the neutrino bremsstrahlung process. In the first part the electro-weak nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung is calculated in free space in terms of a on-shell $T$-matrix using a generalized Low energy theorem. In the second part the emissivities are calculated in terms of the hadronic polarization at the two-loop level. Various medium effects, such as finite particle width, Pauli blocking in the $T$-matrix are considered. Compared to the pioneering work of Friman and Maxwell in terms of (anti-symmetrized) one-pion exchange the resulting emissivity is about a factor 4 smaller at saturation density.

Electromagnetic transitions between giant resonances within a continuum-RPA approach

A general continuum-RPA approach is developed to describe electromagnetic transitions between giant resonances. Using a diagrammatic representation for the three-point Green's function, an expression for the transition amplitude is derived which allows one to incorporate effects of mixing of single and double giant resonances as well as to take the entire basis of particle-hole states into consideration. The radiative widths for E1 transition between the charge-exchange spin-dipole giant resonance and Gamow-Teller states are calculated for ^{90}Nb and ^{208}Bi nuclei. The importance of the mixing is stressed.

Hyperon-nucleon scattering and hyperon masses in the nuclear medium

We analyze low-energy hyperon-nucleon scattering using an effective field theory in next-to-leading order. By fitting experimental cross sections for laboratory hyperon momenta below 200 MeV/c and using information from the hypertriton we determine twelve contact-interaction coefficients. Based on these we discuss the low-density expansion of hyperon mass shifts in the nuclear medium.

Tensor Analyzing Power and Current Conservation in the d+p->3He+g reaction

The tensor analyzing power in p+ \vec{d} radiative capture is investigated in a covariant and gauge invariant approach. The results of the present calculation are compared with those of other theoretical approaches and with experiment. Predictions for Ayy at Ed = (150-350) MeV are given. At forward and backward angles T20, T22 and Ayy are sensitive to the effects of current conservation. The interplay between effects coming from the nuclear and current structures is discussed.

Cooling of Neutron Stars Revisited: Application of Low Energy Theorems

Cooling of neutrons stars proceeds mainly via neutrino emission; As an example we study the modified neutrino bremsstrahlung process $nn \to nnν\barν.$ The radiated energy is small compared to other scales in the system. Hence one can use low-energy theorems to compute the neutrino emissivity in terms of the non-radiative process, ie the on-shell $T$ matrix. We find that the use of the $T-$matrix as compared to previous estimates based upon one pion exchange leads a substantial reduction of the predicted emissivity.

Neutrino-pair emission in a strong magnetic field

We study the neutrino emissivity of strongly magnetized neutron stars due to the charged and neutral current couplings of neutrinos to baryons in strong magnetic fields. The leading order neutral current process is the one-body neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung, which does not have an analogue in the zero field limit. The leading order charged current reaction is the known generalization of the direct Urca processes to strong magnetic fields. While for superstrong magnetic fields in excess of $10^{18}$ G the direct Urca process dominates the one-body bremsstrahlung, we find that for fields on the order $10^{16}-10^{17}$ G and temperatures a few times $10^9$ K the one-body bremsstrahlung is the dominant process. Numerical computation of the resulting emissivity, based on a simple parametrization of the equation of state of the $npe$-matter in a strong magnetic field, shows that the emissivity of this reaction is of the same order of magnitude as that of the modified Urca process in the zero field limit.

Coherent neutrino radiation in supernovae at two loops

We develop a neutrino transport theory, in terms of the real-time non-equilibrium Green's functions, which is applicable to physical conditions arbitrary far from thermal equilibrium. We compute the coherent neutrino radiation in cores of supernovae by evaluating the two-particle-two-hole (2p-2h) polarization function with dressed propagators. The propagator dressing is carried out in the particle-particle channel to all orders in the interaction. We show that at two loops there are two distinct sources of coherence effects in the bremsstrahlung. One is the generically off-shell intermediate state propagation, which leads to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal type suppression of radiation. We extend previous perturbative results, obtained in the leading order in quasiparticle width, by deriving the exact non-perturbative expression. A new contribution due to off-shell finial/initial baryon states is treated in the leading order in the quasiparticle width. The latter contribution corresponds to processes of higher order than second order in the virial expansion in the number of quasiparticles. At 2p-2h level, the time component of the polarization tensor for the vector transitions vanishes identically in the soft neutrino limit. Vector current thereby is conserved. The contraction of the neutral axial vector current with tensor interaction among the baryons leads to a non-vanishing contribution to the bremsstrahlung rate. These rates are evaluated numerically for finite temperature pure neutron matter at and above the nuclear saturation density.

Photodisintegration of the deuteron in the few GeV region using asymptotic amplitudes

Exclusive photodisintegration of the deuteron in the 1-4GeV range is described in terms of a simple covariant and gauge invariant approach using an effective counting rule as the hard part of the d-np vertex. At a scattering angle of theta_cm=90 degrees a prescaling behavior of the differential cross section proportional to 1/s^(n-2) with n ~ 12 is obtained; going away from 90 degrees the value of n decreases slowly, in qualitative agreement with the recent data.

Pions in isospin asymmetric matter and nuclear Drell-Yan scattering

Using a self-consistent delta-hole model the pion propagation in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is studied. In neutron-rich matter, corresponding to heavy nuclei, a significant difference in positive and negative pion light-cone distributions is obtained leading to a nuclear enhancement of up antiquark distribution compared to the down antiquark one. This means that the sea-quark asymmetry in the free nucleon cannot be extracted model independently from an experiment on a neutron-rich nucleus.

Production of e+e- pairs in proton-deuteron capture to 3He

The process p+d \leftrightarrow 3He + γ* at intermediate energies is described using a covariant and gauge-invariant model, and a realistic pd3He vertex. Both photodisintegration of 3He and proton-deuteron capture with production of e+e- pairs are studied, and results for cross sections and response functions are presented. The effect of time-like formfactors on the dilepton cross sections is investigated as well.
