Center-of-mass effects on the quasi-hole spectroscopic factors in the 16O(e,e'p) reaction

The spectroscopic factors for the low-lying quasi-hole states observed in the 16O(e,e'p)15N reaction are reinvestigated with a variational Monte Carlo calculation for the structure of the initial and final nucleus. A computational error in a previous report is rectified. It is shown that a proper treatment of center-of-mass motion does not lead to a reduction of the spectroscopic factor for $p$-shell quasi-hole states, but rather to a 7% enhancement. This is in agreement with analytical results obtained in the harmonic oscillator model. The center-of-mass effect worsens the discrepancy between present theoretical models and the experimentally observed single-particle strength. We discuss the present status of this problem, including some other mechanisms that may be relevant in this respect.

Electromagnetic properties of off-shell particles and gauge invariance

Electromagnetic properties of off-shell particles are discussed on the basis of a purely electromagnetic reaction: virtual Compton scattering off a proton. It is shown that the definition of off-shell electromagnetic form factors is not gauge invariant and that these cannot be investigated in practice. Using only fundamental requirements of gauge invariance it is demonstrated that off-shell effects are cancelled in the longitudinal components of the total conserved current by the minimal contact current, while the off-shellness appears only in the the transverse (gauge invariant) non-pole part. This provides the possibility to introduce an on-shell extrapolated form factor F_1^+(q^2) in a gauge invariant way for the unphysical time-like region, 4m_e^2<q^2, 4M_N^2.

Pions in the nuclear medium and Drell-Yan scattering

We investigate the modification of the pion-cloud in the nuclear medium and its effect on the nuclear Drell-Yan process. The pion's in-medium self-energy is calculated in a self-consistent delta-hole model, with particle-hole contribution also included. Both the imaginary and real part of the pion's and delta's self-energy are taken into account and related through a dispersion relation assuring causality. The resulting in-medium pion light-cone momentum distribution shows only a slight enhancement compared to the one of the free nucleon. As a consequence the ratio of the cross-section for Drell-Yan scattering on nuclear matter and nucleonic target is close to unity in agreement with experiment.

Spectrum Generating Algebra for X$_{3}$ Molecules

A new spectrum generating algebra for a unified description of rotations and vibrations in polyatomic molecules is introduced. An application to nonlinear X$_3$ molecules shows that this model (i) incorporates exactly the relevant point group, (ii) provides a complete classification of oblate top states, and (iii) treats properly both degenerate and nondegenerate vibrations.

Slow proton production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and the pion cloud in the nucleon

The semi-inclusive cross section for producing slow protons in charged current deep inelastic (anti-) neutrino scattering on protons and neutrons is calculated as a function of the Bjorken $x$ and the proton momentum. The standard hadronization models based upon the colour neutralization mechanism appear to underestimate the rate of slow proton production on hydrogen. The presence of the virtual mesons (pions) in the nucleon leads to an additional mechanism for proton production, referred to as spectator process. It is found that at low proton momenta both mechanisms compete, whereas the spectator mechanism dominates at very small momenta, while the color neutralization mechanism dominates at momenta larger than 1-2 \, GeV$/c$. The results of the calculations are compared with the CERN bubble chamber (BEBC) data. The spectator model predicts a sharp increase of the semi-inclusive cross section at small $x$ due to the sea quarks in virtual mesons.

The Spectral Function for Finite Nuclei in the Local Density Approximation

The spectral function for finite nuclei is computed within the framework of the Local Density Approximation, starting from nuclear matter spectral functions obtained with a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The spectral function is decomposed into a single-particle part and a ''correlated'' part; the latter is treated in the local density approximation. As an application momentum distributions, quasi-particle strengths and overlap functions for valence hole states, and the light-cone momentum distribution in finite nuclei are computed.

Slow proton production in deep-inelastic neutrino scattering on deuterium

The cross section for semi-inclusive deep inelastic charged current neutrino scattering on hydrogen and deuterium in which a slow proton is observed in coincidence with the muon is computed as a function of Bjorken x and light-cone momentum of the detected proton. In the Impulse Approximation contributions from hadronization and (in case of the deuteron) the emission of a spectator nucleon are considered. In addition the probability for rescattering is computed. The results are compared to a recent analysis of the data from the WA25 (BEBC) experiment at CERN. (KVI-1024)

Dilepton production from virtual bremsstrahlung induced by proton capture

Dilepton production following radiative capture of a proton on a nuclear target is studied in the Impulse Approximation. The cross section is decomposed in terms of four time-like nuclear structure functions through a longitudinal-transverse separation of the nuclear current. Using a simple PWIA model, cross sections and conversion factors are calculated for capture reactions p + n >> d + e^+ e^-, p + p >> 2He + e^+ e^- and p + 11B >> 12C + e^+ e^- at proton energies of 100-200 MeV. The result is compared with a recent measurement of the conversion factor for p + 11B.
