Radiative corrections to the semileptonic Dalitz plot with angular correlation between polarized decaying and emitted hyperons: effects of the four-body region

We obtain a model-independent expression for the complete Dalitz plot of semileptonic decays of polarized hyperons, which includes both the three-body and the four-body regions. We calculate radiative corrections to order alpha, neglecting terms of order alpha q/(pi M_1), where q is the four-momentum transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying hyperon. Our results exhibit explicitly the correlation between the emitted hyperon three-momentum and the spin of the decaying hyperon. This allows us to obtain the corresponding radiative corrections to the integrated emitted hyperon spin-asymmetry coefficient. Our formulas are valid for charged as well as for neutral decaying hyperons and are appropriate for model-independent experimental analysis whether the real photon is discriminated or not.

Soliton Tunneling Transistor

We report on a macroscopic version of the single-electron transistor (SET), which we call the soliton tunneling transistor (STT). The STT, consists of a gate capacitor coupled to a NbSe$_{3}$ crystal with a charge density wave (CDW). The current-voltage characteristic of an STT is periodically modulated by the gate voltage, as in the SET,except that the periodicity corresponds to a macroscopic displacement charge. These results appear to be consistent with time- correlated quantum nucleation of solitons and antisolitons [see Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 1555 (2000)]. We discuss how the microscopic degrees of freedom within the condensate might enable quantum behavior at high temperatures, and report on preliminary modeling studies using a coupled-phase Hamiltonian to interpret our results.

Electric-field induced polarization paths in PZT alloys

Properties of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3 (PZT) for compositions x near the morphotropic phase boundary and under an electric field are simulated using an ab-initio based approach. Applying an electric field of [111] orientation to tetragonal PZT (e.g., x=0.50) leads to the expected sequence of tetragonal, A-type monoclinic, and rhombohedral structures. However, the application of a field of orientation [001] to rhombohedral PZT (e.g., x=0.47) does not simply reverse this sequence. Instead, the system follows a complicated path involving also triclinic and C-type monoclinic structures. These latter phases are found to exhibit huge shear piezoelectric coefficients.

Low-temperature properties of PZT solid solutions near the morphotropic phase boundary

A first-principles-derived approach is used to study structural, piezoelectric and dielectric properties of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_{x})O_{3} (PZT) solid solutions near the morphotropic phase boundary at low temperature. Three ferroelectric phases are found to exist: a tetragonal phase for larger x compositions, a rhombohedral phase for smaller x compositions, and the recently discovered monoclinic phase in between. In this monoclinic phase, the polarization associated with the Zr atoms behaves differently from the polarization associated with the Ti atoms. As the composition x decreases, the former rotates more quickly towards the pseudo-cubic [111] direction and grows in magnitude, while the latter lags in its rotation and its magnitude shrinks. The local microscopic structure is found to deviate significantly from the average structure in these PZT alloy phases as a result of fluctuations in the directions and magnitudes of the local polarizations. The monoclinic phase is characterized by a very large piezoelectric and dielectric response.

A priori mixed hadrons, hyperon non-leptonic decays, and the |ΔI|=1/2 rule

The |ΔI|=1/2 rule in non-leptonic decays of hyperons can be naturally understood by postulating a priori mixed physical hadrons, along with the isospin invariance of the responsible transition operator. It is shown that this operator can be identified with the strong interaction Yukawa hamiltonian.

Flavor symmetry breaking, baryons magnetic moments, and low energy phenomenology of hadrons

A priori mixings of eigenstates in physical states are quantum mechanical effects well known in several realms of physics. The possibility that such effects are also present in particle physics, in the form of mixings that break flavor and parity symmetries, is studied. Applications to non-leptonic and weak radiative decays of hyperons are discussed. The results are very encouraging but should be improved by eventually including the W and Z contributions, assumed small (non-enhanced) in this work.

An estimate of a lower bound on the masses of mirror baryons

We consider the most favorable conditions to indirectly observe the mixing of ordinary and mirror hadrons in non-leptonic and weak radiative decays of hyperons. This allows us to set a lower bound on the masses of mirror baryons. This bound turns out to be impressively high, of the order of $10^6$GeV.

(2+1)-Dimensional Black Hole with Coulomb-like Field

A (2+1)-static black hole solution with a nonlinear electric field is derived. The source to the Einstein equations is a nonlinear electrodynamics, satisfying the weak energy conditions, and it is such that the energy momentum tensor is traceless. The obtained solution is singular at the origin of coordinates. The derived electric field E(r) is given by $E(r)=q/r^2$, thus it has the Coulomb form of a point charge in the Minkowski spacetime. This solution describes charged (anti)--de Sitter spaces. An interesting asymptotically flat solution arises for $Λ=0$.

New Limit on the D Coefficient in Polarized Neutron Decay

We describe an experiment that has set new limits on the time reversal invariance violating D coefficient in neutron beta-decay. The emiT experiment measured the angular correlation J . p_e x p_p using an octagonal symmetry that optimizes electron-proton coincidence rates. The result is D=[-0.6+/-1.2(stat)+/-0.5(syst)]x10^(-3). This improves constraints on the phase of g_A/g_V and limits contributions to T violation due to leptoquarks. This paper presents details of the experiment, data analysis, and the investigation of systematic effects.

Radiative corrections to the semileptonic Dalitz plot with angular correlation between polarized decaying hyperons and emitted charged leptons

We obtain a model-independent expression for the Dalitz plot of semileptonic decays of polarized hyperons including radiative corrections to order alpha and neglecting terms of order (alpha q)/(pi M_1), where q is the four-momentum transfer and M_1 is the mass of the decaying hyperon. We specialize our results to exhibit the correlation between the charged-lepton momentum and the spin of the decaying hyperon. We present results for the three-body region of the Dalitz plot and for the complete Dalitz plot (which includes the four-body region). From these results we also obtain the corresponding radiative corrections to the integrated lepton spin-asymmetry coefficient. Our formulas are valid for charged as well as for neutral decaying hyperons and are appropriate for model-independent experimental analysis whether the real photon is discriminated or not.

Neutron beta decay and the current determination of Vud

Measurements of neutron beta decay observables required to determine $|V_{ud}|$ are reaching the 0.1% accuracy. In this paper we review the calculation of the decay rate of this process, discuss its relevant uncertainties, and obtain an expression that is precise at the $10^{-4}$ level. Our analysis clearly shows the necessity of measurements of $λ$, the ratio of axial/vector couplings. The current situation in neutron beta decay is that one cannot yet quote a single consistent value for $|V_{ud}|$ from it. We also discuss the region of parameter space in the $|V_{ud}|$--$λ$ plane where new physics effects should lie, if they contribute to neutron beta decay.

Shape of the 8B Alpha and Neutrino Spectra

The beta-delayed alpha spectrum from the decay of 8B has been measured with a setup that minimized systematic uncertainties that affected previous measurements. Consequently the deduced neutrino spectrum presents much smaller uncertainties than the previous recommendation. The 8B neutrino spectrum is found to be harder than previously recommended with about (10-20)% more neutrinos at energies between 12-14 MeV. The efficiencies of the 37Cl, 71Ga, 40Ar, and SuperKamiokande detectors are respectively, 3.6%, 1.4%, 5.7% and 1.8% larger than previously thought.

A Measurement of Gamow-Teller Strength for 176Yb -> 176Lu and the Efficiency of a Solar Neutrino Detector

We report a 0-degree 176Yb(p,n)176Lu measurement at IUCF where we used 120 and 160 MeV protons and the energy dependence method to determine GT matrix elements relative to the Fermi matrix element which can be calculated model independently. The data show that there is an isolated concentration of GT strength in the low lying 1+ states making the proposed Low Energy Neutrino Spectroscopy (LENS) detector (based on neutrino captures on 176Yb) sensitive to 7Be and pp neutrinos and a promising detector to resolve the solar neutrino problem.

Finite-temperature properties of PZT alloys from first principles

A first-principles-derived approach is developed to study finite-temperature properties of PbZr{1-x}Ti{x}O3 (PZT) solid solutions near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Structural and piezoelectric predictions are in excellent agreement with experimental data and direct first-principles results. A low-temperature monoclinic phase is confirmed to exist, and is demonstrated to act as a bridge between the well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral phases delimiting the MPB. A successful explanation for the large piezoelectricity found in PZT ceramics is also provided.

BTZ black hole from (3+1) gravity

We propose an approach for constructing spatial slices of (3+1) spacetimes with cosmological constant but without a matter content, which yields (2+1) vacuum with $Λ$ solutions. The reduction mechanism from (3+1) to (2+1) gravity is supported on a criterion in which the Weyl tensor components are required to vanish together with a dimensional reduction via an appropriate foliation. By using an adequate reduction mechanism from the Plebański-Carter[A] solution in (3+1) gravity, the (2+1) BTZ solution can be obtained.

A priori mixing of mesons and the |Delta I|=1/2 rule in K\toππ

We consider the hypothesis of a priori mixings in the mass eigenstates of mesons to obtain the |Delta I|=1/2 rule in K\toππ. The Hamiltonian responsible for the transition is the strong interacting one. The experimental data are described using the isospin symmetry relations between the strong coupling constants.

Optical Monitoring of Quasars: I. Variability

We present an analysis of quasar variability from data collected during a photometric monitoring of 50 objects carried out at CNPq/Laboratorio Nacional de Astrofisica, Brazil, between March 1993 and July 1996. A distinctive feature of this survey is its photometric accuracy, ~ 0.02 V mag, achieved through differential photometry with CCD detectors, what allows the detection of faint levels of variability. We find that the relative variability, delta = sigma / L, observed in the V band is anti-correlated with both luminosity and redshift, although we have no means of discovering the dominant relation, given the strong coupling between luminosity and redshift for the objects in our sample. We introduce a model for the dependence of quasar variability on frequency that is consistent with multi-wavelength observations of the nuclear variability of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151. We show that correcting the observed variability for this effect slightly increases the significance of the trends of variability with luminosity and redshift. Assuming that variability depends only on the luminosity, we show that the corrected variability is anti-correlated with luminosity and is in good agreement with predictions of a simple Poissonian model. The energy derived for the hypothetical pulses, ~ 10^50 erg, agrees well with those obtained in other studies. We also find that the radio-loud objects in our sample tend to be more variable than the radio-quiet ones, for all luminosities and redshifts.
