Positron-neutrino correlations in 32Ar and 33Ar Decays: Probes of Scalar weak currents and nuclear isospin mixing

The positron-neutrino correlation in the 0^+ \to 0^+ βdecay of ^{32}Ar was measured at ISOLDE by analyzing the effect of lepton recoil on the shape of the narrow proton group following the superallowed decay. Our result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction; for vanishing Fierz interference we find a=0.9989 \pm 0.0052 \pm 0.0036. Our result leads to improved constraints on scalar weak interactions. The positron-neutrino correlation in ^{33}Ar decay was measured in the same experiment; for vanishing Fierz interference we find a=0.944 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.003. The ^{32}Ar and ^{33}Ar correlations, in combination with precision measurements of the half-lives, superallowed branching ratios and beta endpoint energies, will determine the isospin impurities of the superallowed transitions. These will provide useful tests of isospin-violation corrections used in deducing |V_{\rm ud}| which currently indicates non-unitarity of the KM matrix.

Positron-neutrino correlation in the 0^+ \to 0^+ decay of ^{32}Ar

The positron-neutrino correlation in the $0^+ \to 0^+ β$ decay of $^{32}$Ar was measured at ISOLDE by analyzing the effect of lepton recoil on the shape of the narrow proton group following the superallowed decay. Our result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. For vanishing Fierz interference we find $a=0.9989 \pm 0.0052 \pm 0.0036$, which yields improved constraints on scalar weak interactions.

A Priori Mixed Hadrons, Weak Radiative and Non-leptonic Decays of Hyperons

A priori mixings of eigenstates in physical states are quantum mechanical effects well known in several realms of physics. The possibility that such effects are also present in particle physics, in the form of flavor and parity mixings, is studied. Applications to weak radiative and non-leptonic decays of hyperons are discussed.

On the universality of the a priori mixing angles in weak radiative decays of hyperons

Strong-flavor and parity a priori mixing in hadrons are shown to describe well the experimental evidence on weak radiative decays of hyperons. An independent determination of the a priori mixing angles is performed. The values obtained for them are seen to have a universality-like property, when compared to their values in non-leptonic decays of hyperons.

A detailed determination of the a priori mixing angles in non-leptonic decays of hyperons

Non-leptonic Decays of Hyperons can provide a detailed determination of the a priori mixing angles that appear in physical hadrons in the approach in which non-perturbative flavor and parity violations are present in tiny pieces of the hadron mass operator. The determination of such angles in these decays will provide a bench mark to test their necessary universality-like property in other types of decays. Our main result is that the magnitudes of the a priori mixing angles can be determined quite accurately.

Hyperon Non-leptonic Decays, the |Delta I|=1/2 Rule, and A Priori Mixed Hadrons

The $|ΔI|=1/2$ rule in non-leptonic decays of hyperons can be naturally understood by postulating a priori mixed physical hadrons, along with the isospin invariance of the responsible transition operator. It is shown that this operator can be identified with the strong interaction Yukawa hamiltonian. The experimental amplitudes are well reproduced.

Quark Mixing Possibilities in Extensions of the Standard Model and the Electromagnetic Current

The existence of new quarks may lead to their mixing with ordinary quarks. We are particularly interested in studying the consequences such mixings could have upon the electromagnetic current. We find that new strong flavor and parity violating electromagnetic interactions may exist. To be specific, for our analysis we work with the model: $SU_2 \otimes U_1 \otimes \hat{SU}_2 \otimes \hat{U}_1$, which doubles the standard electroweak sector, both in gauge bosons and in quarks.

Addendum to: Radiative corrections to the Dalitz plot of semileptonic decays of neutral baryons with light or charm quarks

We show that the radiative corrections containing terms up to order $αq / πM_1$ for unpolarized semileptonic decays of baryons with positron emission can be obtained by simply reversing the sign of the axial-vector form factors in the corresponding final expressions of such decays with electron emission. This rule is valid regardless of the final kinematical variables chosen and of the particular Lorentz frame in which the final results are required.

Determination of the Kobayashi-Maskawa-Cabibbo matrix element V_{us} under various flavor-symmetry-breaking models in hyperon semileptonic decays

We study the success to describe hyperon semileptonic decays of four models that incorporate second-order SU(3) symmetry breaking corrections. The criteria to assess their success is by determining V_{us} in each of the three relevant hyperon semileptonic decays and comparing the values obtained with one another and also with the one that comes from K_{l3} decays. A strong dependence on the particular symmetry breaking model is observed. Values of V_{us} which do not agree with the one of K_{l3} are generally obtained. However, in the context of chiral perturbation theory, only the model whose corrections are O(m_s) and O(m_s^{3/2}) is successful. Using its predictions for the f_1 form factors one can quote a value of V_{us} from this model, namely, V_{us}=0.2176\pm 0.0026, which is in excellent agreement with the K_{l3} one.

Plebański-Demiański-like solutions in metric-affine gravity

We consider a (non--Riemannian) metric--affine gravity theory, in particular its nonmetricity--torsion sector ``isomorphic'' to the Einstein--Maxwell theory. We map certain Einstein--Maxwell electrovacuum solutions to it, namely the Plebański--Demiański class of Petrov type D metrics.

A Priori Mixed Baryons and Weak Radiative Decays

A priori mixings of eigenstates in physical states are quantum mechanical effects well known in several realms of physics. The possibility that such effects are also present in particle physics, in the form of flavor and parity mixings, is studied. An application to weak radiative decays of hyperons is discussed. It is suggested that this scheme may also be present in non-leptonic and rare mode decays as the enhancement phenomenon.

Weierstrass weight of Gorenstein singularities with one or two branches

Let $X$ denote an integral, projective Gorenstein curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. In the case when $k$ is of characteristic zero, C. Widland and the second author have defined Weierstrass points of a line bundle on $X$. In the first section, this definition is extended to linear systems in arbitrary characteristic. This definition may be viewed as a generalization of the definitions of Laksov and Stöhr-Voloch to the Gorenstein case. In the second section, an example is given to illustrate the definition. This example is a plane curve of arithmetic genus 3 in characteristic 2 such that the gap sequence at every smooth point (with respect to the dualizing bundle) is 1,2,5 and there are no smooth Weierstrass points. In the third section, the Weierstrass weight of a unibranch singularity (on a not necessarily rational curve) is computed in terms of its semigroup of values. In the final section, the Weierstrass weight of a singularity with precisely two branches (again assuming that the characteristic is zero) is computed.
