Scaling Laws for Thermodiffusively Unstable Lean Premixed Turbulent Hydrogen-Air Flames

Lean premixed hydrogen-air flames are strongly affected by thermodiffusive (TD) instabilities, which can alter the flame structure and enhance the local reactivity many-fold. Two recent models (Howarth et al. (Combust.~Flame 253, 2023) and Rieth et al. (MSC 2023)) describe the scaling of the stretch factor in turbulent hydrogen flames with the Karlovitz number using different parameters, i.e., the $\omega_2$ parameter from linear stability theory and the ratio of the Zel'dovich to the Peclet number (${Ze}/{Pe}$). Using a comprehensive set of 91 direct numerical simulation (DNS) cases spanning a wide range of pressures, equivalence ratios, turbulence intensities, and flow configurations, both formulations are systematically evaluated and an adapted formulation is proposed. The analysis of the governing non-dimensional groups reveals a scaling behavior characterized by two distinct regimes. In the first regime, typically relevant for burner and gas turbine conditions, both models reduce to an identical form that depends solely on the Karlovitz number and the stretch factor of laminar flames, independent of $\omega_2$ or ${Ze}/{Pe}$. In the second regime, characterized by ultra-low flame speeds, the explicit consideration of $\omega_2$ or the ratio ${Ze}/{Pe}$ is required for accurate scaling. In both regimes, the two models predict the DNS data reasonably well and reduce to the same functional form of non-dimensional groups, indicating their physical equivalence.

Line shape analysis of the K$β$ transition in muonic hydrogen

The K$β$ transition in muonic hydrogen was measured with a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. The spectrum is shown to be sensitive to the ground-state hyperfine splitting, the corresponding triplet-to-singlet ratio, and the kinetic energy distribution in the $3p$ state. The hyperfine splitting and triplet-to-singlet ratio are found to be consistent with the values expected from theoretical and experimental investigations and, therefore, were fixed accordingly in order to reduce the uncertainties in the further reconstruction of the kinetic energy distribution. The presence of high-energetic components was established and quantified in both a phenomenological, i.e. cascade-model-free fit, and in a direct deconvolution of the Doppler broadening based on the Bayesian approach.

Hadronic shift in pionic hydrogen

The hadronic shift in pionic hydrogen has been redetermined to be $ε_{1s}=7.086\,\pm\,0.007(stat)\,\pm\,0.006(sys)$\,eV by X-ray spectroscopy of ground state transitions applying various energy calibration schemes. The experiment was performed at the high-intensity low-energy pion beam of the Paul Scherrer Institut by using the cyclotron trap and an ultimate-resolution Bragg spectrometer with bent crystals.

Pionic deuterium

The strong interaction shift $ε$ and broadening Γ in pionic deuterium have been determined in a high statistics study of the πD(3p - 1s) X-ray transition using a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. The pionic deuterium shift will provide constraints for the pion-nucleon isospin scattering lengths extracted from measurements of shift and broadening in pionic hydrogen. The hadronic broadening is related to pion absorption and production at threshold. The results are ε= (-2356 {\pm} 31)meV (repulsive) and Γ1s = (1171+23/-49) meV yielding for the complex πD scattering length a = [-(24.99 {\pm} 0.33) + i (6.22+0.12/-0.26)]x10-3/mπ. From the imaginary part, the threshold parameter for pion production is obtained to be α = (251 +5/-11) μb. This allows, in addition, and by using results from pion absorption in 3He at threshold, the determination of the effective couplings g0 and g1 for s-wave pion absorption on isoscalar and isovector NN pairs.

Precision determination of the dpi -> NN transition strength at threshold

An unusual but effective way to determine at threshold the dpi -> NN transition strength is to exploit the hadronic ground-state broadening in pionic deuterium, accessible by x-ray spectroscopy. The broadening is dominated by the true absorption channel dpi- -> nn, which is related to s-wave pion production pp -> dpi+ by charge symmetry and detailed balance. Using the exotic atom circumvents the problem of Coulomb corrections to the cross section as necessary in the production experiments. Our dedicated measurement finds (1171+23/-49) meV for the broadening yielding (252+5/-11) \mub.

Pionic Deuterium

The strong interaction shift and broadening in pionic deuterium have been remeasured with high statistics by means of the (3p-1s) X-ray transition using the cyclotron trap and a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. Preliminary results are (-2325+/-31) meV (repulsive) for the shift and (1171+23/-49} meV for the width, which yields precise values for the pion-deuteron scattering length and the threshold parameter for pion production.

Line shape of the muH(3p - 1s) hyperfine transitions

The (3p - 1s) X-ray transition to the muonic hydrogen ground state was measured with a high resolution crystal spectrometer. A Doppler effect broadening of the X-ray line was established which could be attributed to different Coulomb de-excitation steps preceding the measured transition. The assumption of a statistical population of the hyperfine levels of the muonic hydrogen ground state was directly confirmed by the experiment and measured values for the hyperfine splitting can be reported. The results allow a decisive test of advanced cascade model calculations and establish a method to extract fundamental strong-interaction parameters from pionic hydrogen experiments.

Highly charged ion X-rays from Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources

Radiation from the highly-charged ions contained in the plasma of Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources constitutes a very bright source of X-rays. Because the ions have a relatively low kinetic energy ($\approx 1$ eV) transitions can be very narrow, containing only small Doppler broadening. We describe preliminary accurate measurements of two and three-electron ions with Z=16--18. We show how these measurement can test sensitively many-body relativistic calculations or can be used as X-ray standards for precise measurements of X-ray transitions in exotic atoms.

On the characterisation of a Bragg spectrometer with X-rays from an ECR source

Narrow X-ray lines from helium-like argon emitted from a dedicated ECR source have been used to determine the response function of a Bragg crystal spectrometer equipped with large area spherically bent silicon (111) or quartz (10$\bar{1}$) crystals. The measured spectra are compared with simulated ones created by a ray-tracing code based on the expected theoretical crystal's rocking curve and the geometry of the experimental set-up.

Observation of coherent oscillation of a single nuclear spin and realization of a two-qubit conditional quantum gate

Rabi nutations of a single nuclear spin in a solid have been observed. The experiments were carried out on a single electron and a single 13C nuclear spin of a single nitrogen vacancy defect center in diamond. The system was used for implementation of quantum logical NOT and a conditional two-qubit gate (CROT). Density matrix tomography of the CROT gate shows that the gate fidelity achieved in our experiments is up to 0.9, good enough to be used in quantum algorithms.

Stable single photon source in near infrared

Owing to their unsurpassed photostability, defects in solids may be ideal candidates for single photon sources. Here we report on generation of single photons by optical excitation of a yet unexplored defect in diamond, the nickel-nitrogen complex (NE8) centre. The most striking feature of the defect is its emission bandwidth of 1.2 nm at room temperature. The emission wavelength of the defect is around 800 nm, which is suitable for telecom fibres. In addition, in this spectral region little background light from the diamond bulk material is detected. Consequently, a high contrast in antibunching measurements is achieved.

Coherent oscillations in a single electron spin at room temperature

Rabi nutations of a single electron spin in a single defect center have been detected. The coherent evolution of the spin quantum state is followed via optical detection of the spin state. Coherence times up to several microseconds at room temperature have been measured. Optical readout of the spin states leads to decoherence, equivalent to the so-called Zeno effect. Quantum beats between electron spin transitions in a single spin Hahn echo experiment are observed. A closer analysis reveals that beats also result from the hyperfine coupling of the electron spin to a single 14N nuclear spin. The results are analysed in terms of a density matrix approach of an electron spin interacting with two oscillating fields.
