Mobility of Bloch Walls via the Collective Coordinate Method

We have studied the problem of the dissipative motion of Bloch walls considering a totally anisotropic one dimensional spin chain in the presence of a magnetic field. Using the so-called "collective coordinate method" we construct an effective Hamiltonian for the Bloch wall coupled to the magnetic excitations of the system. It allows us to analyze the Brownian motion of the wall in terms of the reflection coefficient of the effective potential felt by the excitations due to the existence of the wall. We find that for finite values of the external field the wall mobility is also finite. The spectrum of the potential at large fields is investigated and the dependence of the damping constant on temperature is evaluated. As a result we find the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the wall mobility.

The Striped Phase in Presence of Disorder and Lattice Potentials

We study the influence of disorder and lattice effects on the striped phase and the incommensurate spin fluctuations of the cuprates and nickelates. Starting from a phenomenological model of a discrete quantum string on a lattice with disorder, we derive the renormalisation group equations in leading order in the lattice and disorder strength. Three regimes are identified, the quantum membrane phase, the flat phase pinned by the lattice and the disorder pinned phase. We compare our results with measurements on nickelates and cuprates and find good agreement.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior and Griffiths phase in {\it f}-electron compounds

We study the interplay among disorder, RKKY and Kondo interactions in {\it f}-electron alloys. We argue that the non-Fermi liquid behavior observed in these systems is due to the existence of a Griffiths phase close to a quantum critical point. The existence of this phase provides a unified picture of a large class of materials. We also propose new experiments that can test these ideas.

Charge ordering and long-range interactions in layered transition metal oxides

We study the competition between long-range and short-range interactions among holes within the spin density wave picture of layered transition metal oxides. We focus on the problem of charge ordering and the charge phase diagram. We show that the main interactions are the long-range Coulomb interaction and a dipolar short-range interaction generated by the short-range antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We find four different phases depending on the strength of the dipolar interaction and the density of holes: Wigner crystal, diagonal stripes, horizontal-vertical stripes (loops) and a glassy-clumped phase. We discuss the effect of temperature, disorder and lattice effects on these phases.

Effect of planar impurities on the superfluid density of striped cuprates

We propose a mechanism for superconductivity suppression in stripe-correlated cuprates based on the pinning of the stripes by impurities, such as Zn. The suppression of superfluid density occurs in the vicinity of the impurity due to the low dimensional character of superfluid carriers on the stripes. Simple geometric argument about the planar fraction of the carriers, affected by stripe pinning, leads to prediction for impurity critical concentration $z_c \sim T^2_c$ and for the linear $T_c$ suppression by Zn doping. We show that our results reproduce the Uemura relation in the pure system and we predict the behavior of the superfluidy density as a function of Zn concentration. We compare our results with available data.

Open Luttinger liquids

We study the problem of Luttinger liquids interacting with an active environment. We are particularly interested in how dissipation affects the response and correlation functions of non-isolated Luttinger liquids. We show that the exchange of particles, energy, and momentum lead to changes in the exponents characterizing the various correlations functions. We discuss the importance of the zero mode physics in this context.

Superconductivity, Josephson coupling and order parameter symmetry in striped cuprates

We consider a renormalization group study of the problem of coupled stripes of holes in cuprates. We use a model of a mesh of horizontal and vertical stripes and study the problemof superconductivity via the Josephson coupling. We discuss the evolution of the Fermi surface with doping and temperature, the existence of Luttinger and/or Fermi liquid behavior, the presence of pre-formed Cooper pairs and the symmetry and magnitude of the superconducting order parameter.

Evidence for a common physical description of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in f-electron systems

The non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior observed in the low temperature specific heat $C(T)$ and magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ of f-electron systems is analyzed within the context of a recently developed theory based on Griffiths singularities. Measurements of $C(T)$ and $χ(T)$ in the systems $Th_{1-x}U_{x}Pd_{2}Al_{3}$, $Y_{1-x}U_{x}Pd_3$, and $UCu_{5-x}M_{x}$ (M = Pd, Pt) are found to be consistent with $C(T)/T \propto χ(T) \propto T^{-1+λ}$ predicted by this model with $λ<1$ in the NFL regime. These results suggest that the NFL properties observed in a wide variety of f-electron systems can be described within the context of a common physical picture.

Theory of Spin Fluctuations in Striped Phases of Doped Antiferromagnetic Cuprates

We study the properties of generalized striped phases of doped cuprate planar quantum antiferromagnets. We invoke an effective, spatially anisotropic, non-linear sigma model in two space dimensions. Our theoretical predictions are in quantitative agreement with recent experiments in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 with $0 \leq x \leq 0.018$. We focus on (i) the magnetic correlation length, (ii) the staggered magnetization at $T=0$ and (iii) the Néel temperature, as functions of doping, using parameters determined previously and independently for this system. These results support the proposal that the low doping (antiferromagnetic) phase of the cuprates has a striped configuration.

Luttinger Stripes in Antiferromagnets

We propose a model for the physics of stripes in antiferromagnets in which the stripes are described by Luttinger liquids hybridized with antiferromagnetic domains. Using bosonization techniques we study the model in the limit where the magnetic correlation length is larger than the inter-stripe distance and propose an explanation for the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition seen in neutron scattering in the underdoped regime of La_{2-x} Sr_x Cu O_4. The explanation is based on a phase to anti-phase domain transition in the spin configuration which is associated with the transverse motion of the stripes. Using a non-linear sigma model to describe the antiferromagnetic regions we conjecture the crystalization of the stripes in the magnetically ordered phase.

Landau level bosonization of a 2D electron gas

In this work we introduce a bosonization scheme for the low energy excitations of a 2D interacting electron gas in the presence of an uniform magnetic field under conditions where a large integral number of Landau levels are filled. We give an explicit construction for the electron operator in terms of the bosons. We show that the elementary neutral excitations, known as the magnetic excitons or magnetoplasma modes, can be described within a bosonic language and that it provides a quadratic bosonic Hamiltonian for the interacting electron system which can be easily diagonalized.

Magnetic-field and chemical-potential effects on the low-energy separation

We show that in the presence of a magnetic field the usual low-energy separation of the Hubbard chain is replaced by a ``$c$'' and ``$s$'' separation. Here $c$ and $s$ refer to small-momentum and low-energy independent excitation modes which couple both to charge and spin. Importantly, we find the exact generators of these excitations both in the electronic and pseudoparticle basis. In the limit of zero magnetic field these generators become the usual charge and spin fluctuation operators. The $c$ and $s$ elementary excitations are associated with the $c$ and $s$ pseudoparticles, respectively. We also study the separate pseudoparticle left and right conservation laws. In the presence of the magnetic field the small-momentum and low-energy excitations can be bosonized. However, the suitable bosonization corresponds to the $c$ and $s$ pseudoparticle modes and not to the usual charge and spin fluctuations. We evaluate exactly the commutator between the electronic-density operators. Its spin-dependent factor is in general non diagonal and depends on the interaction. The associate bosonic commutation relations characterize the present unconventional low-energy separation.

Electrons, pseudoparticles, and quasiparticles in the one-dimensional many-electron problem

We generalize the concept of quasiparticle for one-dimensional (1D) interacting electronic systems. The $\uparrow $ and $\downarrow $ quasiparticles recombine the pseudoparticle colors $c$ and $s$ (charge and spin at zero magnetic field) and are constituted by one many-pseudoparticle {\it topological momenton} and one or two pseudoparticles. These excitations cannot be separated. We consider the case of the Hubbard chain. We show that the low-energy electron -- quasiparticle transformation has a singular charater which justifies the perturbative and non-perturbative nature of the quantum problem in the pseudoparticle and electronic basis, respectively. This follows from the absence of zero-energy electron -- quasiparticle overlap in 1D. The existence of Fermi-surface quasiparticles both in 1D and three dimensional (3D) many-electron systems suggests there existence in quantum liquids in dimensions 1$<$D$<$3. However, whether the electron -- quasiparticle overlap can vanish in D$>$1 or whether it becomes finite as soon as we leave 1D remains an unsolved question.

Doped planar quantum antiferromagnets with striped phases

We study the properties of the striped phases that have been proposed for the doped cuprate planar quantum antiferromagnets. We invoke an effective, spatially anisotropic, non-linear sigma model in two space dimensions. Our theoretical predictions are in {\it quantitative} agreement with recent experiments. We focus on (i) the staggered magnetization at $T=0$ and (ii) the Néel temperature, as functions of doping; these have been measured recently in La${}_{2-x}$ Sr${}_x$ Cu O${}_4$ with $0 \leq x \leq 0.018$. Good agreement with experiment is obtained using parameters determined previously and independently for this system. These results support the proposal that the low doping (antiferromagnetic) phase of the cuprates has a striped configuration.

Dynamics of a heavy particle in a Luttinger liquid

We study the dynamics of a heavy particle of mass $M$ moving in a one-dimensional repulsively interacting Fermi gas. The Fermi gas is described using the Luttinger model and bosonization. By transforming to a frame co-moving with the heavy particle, we map the model onto a generalized ``quantum impurity problem". A renormalization group calculation reveals a crossover from strong to weak coupling upon scaling down in temperature. Above the crossover temperature scale $T^*=(m/M) E_F$, the particle's mobility, $μ$, is found to be (roughly) temperature independent and proportional to the dimensionless conductance, $g$, characterizing the 1d Luttinger liquid. Here $m$($<<M$) is the fermion mass, and $E_F$ is the Fermi energy. Below $T^*$, in the weak coupling regime, the mobility grows and diverges as $μ(T) \sim T^{-4}$ in $T \to 0$ limit.

Electrons, pseudoparticles, and quasiparticles in one-dimensional interacting electronic systems

We find the singular transformation between the electron operator and the pseudoparticle operators for the Hubbard chain. We generalize the concept of quasiparticle to one-dimensional electronic systems which in 1D refers to many-pseudoparticle objects. We obtain explicit results for the electron renormalization factor, self energy, and vertex functions at the Fermi points. We also discuss the possible connection of our results to higher dimensions and explore the possibilities of instabilities in the interacting problem such as the formation of Cooper pairs.

Motion of heavy particles coupled to fermionic and bosonic environments in one dimension

Making use of a simple unitary transformation we change the hamiltonian of a particle coupled to an one dimensional gas of bosons or fermions to a new form from which the many body degrees of freedom can be easily traced out. The effective dynamics of the particle allows us to compute its damping constant in terms of the reflection coefficient of the interaction potential and the occupation number of the environmental particles. We apply our results to a delta repulsive potential.

On a class of integrable interacting electronic systems with off-diagonal disorder

We report a class of {\it integrable} one-dimensional interacting electronic sy$ with {\it off-diagonal disorder}. For these systems, the disorder can be ``gauged away,''and the spectrum can be mapped completely onto the spectrum of the ordered problem, which can be solved by Bethe ansatz or by bosonization. We study the magnetic properties of the persistent currents in mesoscopic rings in the case in which the ordered system is a Luttinger liquid. The system can be paramagnetic or diamagnetic, depending on the amount of the disorder and the number of fermions in the system.
