Non-Linear Waves in Fermi Liquids

I show that when non-linearities are taken into account the Landau theory of Fermi liquids predicts the existence of hyperbolic waves in fermionic systems. The zero sound is described by a infinite set of coupled non-linear partial differential equations, one for each harmonic of oscillation of the Fermi surface. When just a few harmonics are included it is possible to describe the dynamics of the first sound in a very simple way. These results lead to the interesting experimental possibility of having non-linear effects in quantum liquids. In particular I discuss the problem of generation of second harmonic in a Fermi system.

On Quantum Scattering of a System with Internal Degrees of Freedom

We study the quantum tunnelling of a very complex object of which only part is coupled to an external potential ( the potential barrier ). We treat this problem as the tunnelling of a particle (part of the system affected by the potential) coupled to a ``heat bath" ( all of the remaining degrees of freedom ) from the point of view of the wavefunction of the whole system. We obtain an effective scattering equation for this wavefunction which resembles the integral equation for the wavefunction of the particle in the absence of the bath. We show that the effect of the interaction is to renormalize the mass and the potential of the problem and that these new parameters can be solely described in terms of the spectral function of the excitations of the system.

Landau theory of phase separation in cuprates

I discuss the problem of phase separation in cuprates from the point of view of the Landau theory of Fermi liquids. I calculate the rate of growth of unstable regions for the hydrodymanics and collisionless limit and, in presence of long range Coulomb interactions, the size of these regions. These are analytic results valid for any strength of the Landau parameters.

Pseudoparticle-operator description of an interacting Bose gas

We write the Hamiltonian of the Bose gas with two-body repulsive $δ$-function potential in a pseudoparticle operator basis which diagonalizes the problem via the Bethe ansatz. In this operator basis the original bosonic interactions are represented by zero-momentum forward-scattering interactions between Landau-liquid pseudoparticles. We find that this pseudoparticle operator algebra is complete: {\it all} the Hamiltonian eigenstates are generated by acting pseudoparticle operators on the system vacuum. It is shown that one boson of vanishing momentum and energy is a composite of a one-pseudoparticle excitation and a collective pseudoparticle excitation. These excitations have finite opposite momenta and cannot be decomposed. Our formalism enables us to calculate the various quantities which characterize the static and dynamic behavior of the system at low energies.

Conservation laws and bosonization in integrable Luttinger liquids

We examine and explain the Luttinger-liquid character of models solvable by the Bethe ansatz by introducing a suitable bosonic operator algebra. In the case of the Hubbard chain, this involves two bosonic algebras which apply to {\it all} values of $U$, electronic density, and magnetization. Only at zero magnetization does this lead to the usual charge - spin separation. We show that our ``pseudoparticle'' operator approach clarifies, unifies, and extends several recent results, including the existence of independent right and left equations of motion and the concept of ``pseudoparticle'' (also known as ``Bethe quasiparticle'').

New perturbation theory of low-dimensional quantum liquids I: the pseudoparticle operator basis

We introduce a new operator algebra for the description of the low-energy physics of one-dimensional, integrable, multicomponent quantum liquids. Considering the particular case of the Hubbard chain in a constant external magnetic field and with varying chemical potential, we show that at low energy its Bethe-ansatz solution can be interpreted in terms of the new {\it pseudoparticle operator algebra}. Our algebraic approach provides a concise interpretation of and justification for several recent studies of low-energy excitations and transport which have been based on detailed analyses of specific Bethe-ansatz eigenfunctions and eigenenergies. A central point is that the {\it exact ground state} of the interacting many-electron problem is the non-interacting pseudoparticle ground state. Furthermore, in the pseudoparticle basis, the quantum problem becomes perturbative, {\it i.e.}, the two-pseudoparticle forward-scattering vertices and amplitudes do not diverge, and one can define a many-pseudoparticle perturbation theory. We write the general quantum-liquid Hamiltonian in the new basis and show that the pseudoparticle-perturbation theory leads, in a natural way, to the generalized Landau-liquid approach.

New perturbation theory of low-dimensional quantum liquids II: operator description of Virasoro algebras in integrable systems

We show that the recently developed {\it pseudoparticle operator algebra} which generates the low-energy Hamiltonian eigenstates of multicomponent integrable systems also provides a natural operator representation for the the Virasoro algebras associated with the conformal-invariant character of the low-energy spectrum of the these models. Studying explicitly the Hubbard chain in a non-zero chemical potential and external magnetic field, we establish that the pseudoparticle perturbation theory provides a correct starting point for the construction of a suitable critical-point Hamiltonian. We derive explicit expressions in terms of pseudoparticle operators for the generators of the Virasoro algebras and the energy-momentum tensor, describe the conformal-invariant character of the critical point from the point of view of the response to curvature of the two-dimensional space-time, and discuss the relation to Kac-Moody algebras and dynamical separation.

Exact solution of the Landau fixed point via bosonization

We study, via bosonization, the Landau fixed point for the problem of interacting spinless fermions near the Fermi surface in dimensions higher than one. We rederive the bosonic representation of the Fermi operator and use it to find the general form of the fermion propagator for the Landau fixed point. Using a generalized Bogoliubov transformation we diagonalize exactly the bosonized hamiltonian for the fixed point and calculate the Fermion propagator (and the quasiparticle residue) for isotropic interactions (independently of their strength). We reexamine two well known problems in this context: the screening of long range potentials and the Landau damping of gauge fields. We also discuss the origin of the Luttinger fixed point in one dimension in contrast with the Landau fixed point in higher dimensions.

The mobility and diffusion of a particle coupled to a Luttinger liquid

We study the mobility of a particle coupled to a one dimensional interacting fermionic system, a Luttinger liquid. We bosonize the Luttinger liquid and find the effective interaction between the particle and the bosonic system. We show that the dynamics of this system is completely equivalent to the acoustic polaron problem where the interaction has purely electronic origin. This problem has a zero mode excitation, or soliton, in the strong coupling limit which corresponds to the formation of a polarization cloud due to the fermion-fermion interaction around the particle. We obtain that, due to the scattering of the residual bosonic modes, the soliton has a finite mobility and diffusion coefficient at finite temperatures which depend on the fermion-fermion interaction. We show that at low temperatures the mobility and the diffusion coefficient are proportional to $T^{-4}$ and $T^5$ respectively and at high temperatures the mobility vanishes as $T^{-1}$ while the diffusion increases as $T$.

Dissipative quantum systems modeled by a two level reservoir coupling

The coupling between a quantum dynamical system and a two-level system reservoir is analysed within the framework of the Feynman-Vernon theory. We stress the differences between this new reservoir and the well-known bath of oscillators and show that, in order to obtain the Langevin equation for the system of interest in the high temperature regime, we have to choose a spectral distribution function $J(ω)$ which is finite for $ω=0$.

Bosonization of Fermi liquids

We bosonize a Fermi liquid in any number of dimensions in the limit of long wavelengths. From the bosons we construct a set of coherent states which are related with the displacement of the Fermi surface due to particle-hole excitations. We show that an interacting hamiltonian in terms of the original fermions is quadratic in the bosons. We obtain a path integral representation for the generating functional which in real time, in the semiclassical limit, gives the Landau equation for sound waves and in the imaginary time gives us the correct form of the specific heat for a Fermi liquid even with the corrections due to the interactions between the fermions. We also discuss the similarities between our results and the physics of quantum crystals.

Transport Properties of Solitons

We calculate in this article the transport coefficients which characterize the dynamics of solitons in quantum field theory using the methods of dissipative quantum systems. We show how the damping and diffusion coefficients of soliton-like excitations can be calculated using the integral functional formalism. The model obtained in this article has new features which cannot be obtained in the standard models of dissipation in quantum mechanics.

Bosonization of the Low Energy Excitations of Fermi Liquids

We bosonize the low energy excitations of Fermi Liquids in any number of dimensions in the limit of long wavelengths. The bosons are coherent superposition of electron-hole pairs and are related with the displacement of the Fermi Surface in some arbitrary direction. A coherent-state path integral for the bosonized theory is derived and it is shown to represent histories of the shape of the Fermi Surface. The Landau equation for the sound waves is shown to be exact in the semiclassical approximation for the bosons.

Dynamical decoupling and Kac-Moody current representation in multicomponent integrable systems

The conformal invariant character of $ν$-multicomponent integrable systems (with $ν$ branches of gapless excitations) is described from the point of view of the response to curvature of the two-dimensional space. The $ν\timesν$ elements of the dressed charge matrix are shown to be transition matrix elements of the zero ($μ=0$) components of the diagonal generators of $ν$ independent Kac-Moody algebras (Cartan currents). The dynamical decoupling which occurs in these systems is characterized in terms of the conductivities associated with the $μ= 1$ components of the Cartan currents.

The Thermodynamics of Quantum Systems and Generalizations of Zamolodchikov's C-theorem

In this paper we examine the behavior in temperature of the free energy on quantum systems in an arbitrary number of dimensions. We define from the free energy a function $C$ of the coupling constants and the temperature, which in the regimes where quantum fluctuations dominate, is a monotonically increasing function of the temperature. We show that at very low temperatures the system is controlled by the zero-temperature infrared stable fixed point while at intermediate temperatures the behavior is that of the unstable fixed point. The $C$ function displays this crossover explicitly. This behavior is reminiscent of Zamolodchikov's $C$-theorem of field theories in 1+1 dimensions. Our results are obtained through a thermodynamic renormalization group approach. We find restrictions on the behavior of the entropy of the system for a $C$-theorem-type behavior to hold. We illustrate our ideas in the context of a free massive scalar field theory, the one-dimensional quantum Ising Model and the quantum Non-linear Sigma Model in two space dimensions. In regimes in which the classical fluctuations are important the monotonic behavior is absent.

An alternative approach for the dynamics of polarons in one dimension

We developed a new method based on functional integration to treat the dynamics of polarons in one-dimensional systems. We treat the acoustical and the optical case in an unified manner, showing their differences and similarities. The mobility and diffusion coefficients are calculated in the Markovian approximation in the strong coupling limit.
