Small-x physics near the saturation regime

We consider the T-matrix near the unitarity limit and the energy dependence of the saturation momentum. We discuss the solution to the Kovchegov equation, or equivalently, to the BFKL evolution in the presence of a single saturation boundary. We include some of the correlations missed in the Kovchegov equation by solving the BFKL equation in the presence of two boundaries. The T-matrix now turns out to be frame-independent, which was not the case for the solution in the case of a single boundary, and it doesn't show the scaling behavior of the solution to the Kovchegov equation. We find for the saturation momentum an energy dependence which differs from the one following from the Kovchegov equation.

Small-x physics beyond the Kovchegov equation

We note the differences between the Kovchegov equation and the Balitsky-JIMWLK equations as methods of evaluating high energy hard scattering near the unitarity limit. We attempt to simulate some of the correlations absent in the Kovchegov equation by introducing two boundaries rather than the single boundary which effectively approximates the unitarity limit guaranteed in the Kovchegov equation. We solve the problem of BFKL evolution in the presence of two boundaries and note that the resulting T-matrix now is the same in different frames, which was not the case in the single boundary case. The scaling behavior of the solution to the Kovchegov equation is apparently now lost.

Rare fluctuations and the high-energy limit of the S-matrix in QCD

We argue that one cannot correctly calculate the elastic scattering S-matrix for high-energy dipole-dipole scattering, in the region where S is small, without taking fluctuations into account. The relevant fluctuations are rare and unimportant for general properties of inelastic collisions. We find that the Kovchegov equation, while giving the form of the S-matrix correctly, gives the exponential factor twice as large as the result which emerges when fluctuations are taken into account.

From Color Glass to Color Dipoles in high-energy onium--onium scattering

Within the Color Glass formalism, we construct the wavefunction of a high energy onium in the BFKL and large-N_c approximations, and demonstrate the equivalence with the corresponding result in the Color Dipole picture. We propose a simple factorization formula for the elastic scattering between two non-saturated ``color glasses'' in the center-of-mass frame. This is valid up to energies which are high enough to allow for a study of the onset of unitarization via multiple pomeron exchanges. When applied to the high energy onium-onium scattering, this formula reduces to the Glauber-like scattering between two systems of dipoles, in complete agreement with the dipole picture.

BFKL Dynamics in Jet Evolution

We calculate $e^+e^- \to Q\bar{Q}(k) + anything in a certain momentum, k, region for heavy quark-antiquark (Q\bar{Q})production. In our chosen region we find that the number of heavy quark pairs produced is determined by BFKL dynamics and the energy dependence of the number of pairs is given by $αp-1$ the hard pomeron intercept.

DIS 2003 - An Overview

An overview of DIS 2003 is given with a focus on small-x physics and the interrelationship between deep inelastic scattering and heavy ion physics which furnishes much of the basic information for understanding high-density QCD matter. In addition to small-x physics, topics covered include single spin asymmeteries, light-cone gauge choices, strange quarks in the proton and non-global observables in jet decays.

Nuclear A-dependence near the Saturation Boundary

The A-dependence of the saturation momentum and the scaling behavior of the scattering of a small dipole on a nuclear target are studied in the McLerran-Venugopalan model, in fixed coupling BFKL dynamics and in running coupling BFKL dynamics. In each case, we find scaling not too far from the saturation boundary, although for fixed coupling evolution the scaling function for large A is not the same as for an elementary dipole. We find that $Q_s^2$ is proportional to $A^{1/3}$ in the McLerran-Venugopalan model and in fixed coupling evolution, however, we find an almost total lack of A-dependence in $Q_s^2$ in the case of running coupling evolution.

On the equivalence between the Boltzmann equation and classical field theory at large occupation numbers

We consider a system made up of exictations of a neutral scalar field, ϕ, having a λϕ^4 interaction term. Starting from an ensemble where the occupation number f is large, but λf is small, we develop a classical field theory description of the evolution of the system toward equilibrium. A Boltzmann equation naturally emerges in this description and we show by explicit calculation that the collision term is the same as that coming from elastic scattering. This shows the equivalence of a Boltzmann equation description and a classical field theory description of the same system.

The Energy Dependence of the Saturation Momentum

We study BFKL evolution and, in particular, the energy dependence of the saturation momentum in the presence of saturation boundaries limiting the region of linear BFKL evolution. In the case of fixed coupling evolution we confirm the previously found exponential term in $Q_s(Y)$ and determine the prefactor $Y$ and $α$ dependences. In the running coupling case we find $Y^{1/6}$ corrections to the $Y^{1/2}$exponential behavior previously known. Geometrical scaling of the scattering amplitude is valid in a wide-range of momenta for fixed coupling evolution and in a more restricted region for running coupling evolution.

Does parton saturation at high density explain hadron multiplicities at RHIC ?

We discuss the recent claim that hadron multiplicities measured at RHIC energies are directly described in terms of gluon degrees of freedom fixed from the initial conditions of central heavy ion collisions. The argument is based on the parton saturation scenario expected to be valid at high parton densities and on the assumption of conserved gluon number. Alternatively we conjecture that "bottom-up" equilibration before hadronization modifies this picture, due to nonconservation of the number of gluons.

Parton Saturation-An Overview

The idea of partons and the utility of using light-cone gauge in QCD are introduced. Saturation of quark and gluon distributions are discussed using simple models and in a more general context. The Golec-Biernat W\usthoff model and some simple phenomenology are described. A simple, but realistic, equation for unitary, the Kovchegov equation, is discussed, and an elementary derivation of the JIMWLK equation is given.

A Simple Derivation of the JIMWLK Equation

A simple derivation of the Jalilian-Marian, Iancu, McLerran, Weigert, Leonidov and Kovner (JIMWLK) equation for the evolution of small-x QCD wavefunctions is given. The derivation makes use of the equivalence between the evolution of a (in general complicated) small-x wavefunction with that of the evolution of the (simple) dipole probing the wavefunction in a high energy scattering.

Diffusion corrections to the hard pomeron

The high-energy behaviour of two-scale hard processes is investigated in the framework of small-x models with running coupling, having the Airy diffusion model as prototype. We show that, in some intermediate high-energy regime, the perturbative hard Pomeron exponent determines the energy dependence, and we prove that diffusion corrections have the form hinted at before in particular cases. We also discuss the breakdown of such regime at very large energies, and the onset of the non-perturbative Pomeron behaviour.

Quenching of hadron spectra in media

We determine how the yield of large transverse momentum hadrons is modified due to induced gluon radiation off a hard parton traversing a QCD medium. The quenching factor is formally a collinear- and infrared-safe quantity and can be treated perturbatively. In spite of that, in the $p_\perp$ region of practical interest, its value turns out to be extremely sensitive to large distances and can be used to unravel the properties of dense quark-gluon final states produced in heavy ion collisions. We also find that the standard modelling of quenching by shifting $p_\perp$ in the hard parton cross section by the mean energy loss is inadequate.

On the Angular Dependence of the Radiative Gluon Spectrum

The induced momentum spectrum of soft gluons radiated from a high energy quark produced in and propagating through a QCD medium is reexamined in the BDMPS formalism. A mistake in our published work (Physical Review C60 (1999) 064902) is corrected. The correct dependence of the fractional induced loss $R(θ_{\rm cone})$ as a universal function of the variable $θ^2_{\rm cone} L^3 \hat q$ where $L$ is the size of the medium and $\hat q$ the transport coefficient is presented. We add the proof that the radiated gluon momentum spectrum derived in our formalism is equivalent with the one derived in the Zakharov-Wiedemann approach.

Impact parameter dependent S-matrix for dipole-proton scattering from diffractive meson electroproduction

We extract the S-matrix element for dipole-proton scattering using the data on diffractive electroproduction of vector mesons at HERA. By considering the full t dependence of this process we are able to reliably unfold the profile of the S-matrix for impact parameter values b>0.3 fm. We show that the results depend only weakly on the choice of the form for the vector meson wave function. We relate this result to the discussion about possible saturation effects at HERA.

Bottom-up thermalization in heavy ion collisions

We describe how thermalization occurs in heavy ion collisions in the framework of perturbative QCD. When the saturation scale $Q_s$ is large compared to $Λ_{QCD}$, thermalization takes place during a time of order $α^{-13/5}Q_s^{-1}$ and the maximal temperature achieved is $α^{2/5}Q_s$.

On the Relationship between Large Order Graphs and Instantons for the Double Well Oscillator

The double well oscillator is used as a QCD-like model for studying the relationship between large order graphs and the instanton-antiinstanton solution. We derive an equation for the perturbative coefficients of the ground state energy when the number of 3 and/or 4-vertices is fixed and large. These coefficients are determined in terms of an exact``bounce'' solution. When the number of 4-vertices is analytically continued to be near the negative of half the number of 3-vertices the bounce solution approaches the instanton-antiinstanton solution and detremines leading Borel singularity.
