Small-x Physics, High Parton Densities and Parton Saturation in QCD

Partons are defined as the quanta in a Fock space description of a hadron. Gluon saturation is described in the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation for a large nucleus. The elements of DGLAP and BFKL evolution are given with the BFKL equation derived in a large-$N_c$ dipole formalism. A more general discussion of saturation is given in terms of a dipole scattering on a nucleon or nucleus. Possible evidence for saturation at HERA is discussed.

The Boltzmann equation for gluons at early times after a heavy ion collision

A Boltzmann equation is given for the early stages of evolution of the gluon system produced in a head-on collision. The collision term is taken from gluon- gluon approximation. < p_\perp > and < p_z^2 > are evaluated as a function of time using initial conditions taken from the McLerran-Venugopalan model.

Angular Dependence of the Radiative Gluon Spectrum and the Energy Loss of Hard Jets in QCD Media

The induced momentum spectrum of soft gluons radiated from a high energy quark propagating through a QCD medium is derived in the BDMPS formalism. A calorimetric measurement for the medium dependent energy lost by a jet with opening angle $θ_{\rm cone}$ is proposed. The fraction of this energy loss with respect to the integrated one appears to be the relevant observable. It exhibits a universal behaviour in terms of the variable $θ^2_{\rm cone} L^3 \hat q$ where $L$ is the size of the medium and $\hat q$ the transport coefficient. Phenomenological implications for the differences between cold and hot QCD matter are discussed.

Toward Equilibration in the Early Stages After a High Energy Heavy Ion Collision

The early stages in the evolution of the gluons produced in the central region of a head-on high-energy heavy ion collision is studied. An equation is given for the rate of change of transverse momentum into longitudinal momentum where the longitudinal direction is along the collision axis. We are able to follow the system up to the time where equilibration seems to be setting in, but we are unable to actually follow the system as it reaches equilibrium.

Parton Saturation at Small x and in Large Nuclei

Quark and gluon distributions in the light-cone wavefunction of a high energy hadron or nucleus are calculated in the saturation regime. One loop calculations are performed explicitly using the equivalence between the parton distribution in the light-cone wavefunction and the production distribution of that parton in a current-nucleon (nucleus) scattering. We argue that, except for some overall numerical factors, the Weizsacker- Williams wavefunction correctly gives the physics of the gluon distribution in a light-cone wavefunction.

QCD and Nuclear Physics

The main part of this talk is a review and summary of how QCD is used in two main areas of nuclear physics, namely in determining the quark flavor and spin content of the proton and in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Brief comments are made concerning effective theories in hadron physics and on the separation of various twists in using the operator product expansion to analyze hard processes.

Running Coupling Effects in BFKL Evolution

We resum the recently calculated second order kernel of the BFKL equation. That kernel can be viewed as the sum of a conformally invariant part and a running coupling part. The conformally invariant part leads to a corrected BFKL intercept as found earlier. The running coupling part of the kernel leads to a non-Regge term in the energy dependence of high energy hard scattering, as well as a $Q^2-$dependent intercept.

Radiative Energy Loss of High Energy Partons Traversing an Expanding QCD Plasma

We study analytically the medium-induced energy loss of a high energy parton passing through a finite size QCD plasma, which is expanding longitudinally according to Bjorken's model. We extend the BDMPS formalism already applied to static media to the case of a quark which hits successive layers of matter of decreasing temperature, and we show that the resulting radiative energy loss can be as large as 6 times the corresponding one in a static plasma at the reference temperature $T = T (L)$, which is reached after the quark propagates a distance $L$.

Gluon production in current-nucleus and nucleon-nucleus collisions in a quasi-classical approximation

We calculate gluon production in deep inelastic scattering of the current j= - (1/4) F_{μν}^a F_{μν}^a off a large nucleus and in nucleon-nucleus collisions. In a covariant gauge calculation the transverse momentum spectrum of the gluon is determined by the final state interactions of the gluon with the nucleons in the nucleus. In a light-cone gauge calculation final state interactions are absent and these effects come from the light-cone wavefunction of the nucleus. We work in an approximation which neglects QCD evolution of gluons in the nucleon, that is in a quasi-classical approximation.

General Issues in Small-x and Diffractive Physics

A selected review of topics at the border of hard and soft physics is given. Particular emphasis is a placed on diffraction dissociation at Fermilab and HERA. Recently, significant differences between diffraction dissociation at HERA and at Fermilab have become apparent. This may suggest that one already is reaching nonlinear (unitarity) effects which are extending from the soft physics region into the semihard regime of QCD.

Unitarity Corrections and High Field Strengths in High Energy Hard Collisions

Unitarity corrections to the BFKL description of high energy hard scattering are viewed in large $N_c$ QCD in light-cone quantization. In a center of mass frame unitarity corrections to high energy hard scattering are manifestly perturbatively calculable and unrelated to questions of parton saturation. In a frame where one of the hadrons is initially at rest unitarity corrections are related to parton saturation effects and involve potential strengths $A_μ\sim 1/g.$ In such a frame we describe the high energy scattering in terms of the expectation value of a Wilson loop. The large potentials $A_μ\sim 1/g$ are shown to be pure gauge terms allowing perturbation theory to again describe unitarity corrections and parton saturation effects. Genuine nonperturbative effects only come in at energies well beyond those energies where unitarity constraints first become important.

Limitations on using the operator product expansion at small values of x

Limits on the regions of $Q^2$ and x where the operator product expansion canbe safely used, at small values of x are given. For a fixed large $Q^2$ there is an $x_0(Q^2)$ such that for Bjorken x-values below $x_0$ the operator product expansion breaks down with significant nonperturbative corrections occurring in the leading twist coefficient and anomlous dimension functions due to diffusion of gluons to small values of transverse momentum.

Radiative energy loss and $p_{\perp}$-broadening of high energy partons in nuclei

The medium-induced $p_{\perp}$-broadening and induced gluon radiation spectrum of a high energy quark or gluon traversing a large nucleus is studied. Multiple scattering of the high energy parton in the nucleus is treated in the Glauber approximation. We show that -dE/dz, the radiative energy loss of the parton per unit length, grows as L, the length of the nuclear matter, as does the characteristic transverse momentum squared of the parton $p_{\perp W}^2$. We find dE/dz = (1/8)α_s N_c $p_{\perp W}^2$ holds independent of the details of the parton-nucleon scatterings so long as L is large. Numerical estimates suggest that $p_{\perp}$-broadening and energy loss may be significantly enhanced in hot matter as compared to cold matter, thus making the study of such quantities a possible signal for quark-gluon plasma formation.

Radiative energy loss of high energy quarks and gluons in a finite volume quark-gluon plasma

The medium induced energy loss spectrum of a high energy quark or gluon traversing a hot QCD medium of finite volume is studied. We model the interaction by a simple picture of static scattering centres. The total induced energy loss is found to grow as $L^2$, where $L$ is the extent of the medium. The solution of the energy loss problem is reduced to the solution of a Schrödinger-like equation whose ``potential'' is given by the single-scattering cross section of the high energy parton in the medium. These resuls should be directly applicable to a quark-gluon plasma.

Large multiplicity fluctuations and saturation effects in onium collisions

This paper studies two related questions in high energy onium-onium scattering: the probability of producing an unusually large number of particles in a collision, where it is found that the cross section for producing a central multiplicity proportional to $k$ should decrease exponentially in $\sqrt{k}$. Secondly, the nature of gluon (dipole) evolution when dipole densities become so high that saturation effects due to dipole-dipole interactions become important: measures of saturation are developed to help understand when saturation becomes important, and further information is obtained by exploiting changes of frame, which interchange unitarity and saturation corrections.

The Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in QED

The calculation of the radiative energy loss encountered by a fast charged particle which undergoes multiple scattering is being investigated. A detailed derivation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal coherent effect in QED is given, focusing on the specific feature of the Coulomb interaction. As a result the radiation intensity per unit length in the coherent regime is shown to be proportional to $\sqrt ω$ for a photon energy $ω$ times a logarithmic enhancement which is determined exactly.

Diffractive Leptoproduction of Vector Mesons in QCD

We demonstrate that the distinctive features of the forward differential cross section of diffractive leptoproduction of a vector meson can be legitimately calculated in perturbative QCD in terms of the light-cone $q \bar q$ wave function of the vector meson and the gluon distribution of the target. In particular, we calculate the $Q^2$ and nuclear dependence of the diffractive leptoproduction of vector mesons and estimate the cross section. The production of longitudinally polarized vector mesons by longitudinally polarized virtual photons is predicted to be the dominant component, yielding a cross section behaving as $Q^{-6}$. The nuclear dependence of the diffractive cross sections, which follows from a factorization theorem in perturbative QCD, provides important tests of color transparency as well as constraints on the shadowing of the gluon structure functions and the longitudinal structure functions of nuclei.
