Enhanced Crystal Field Splitting and Orbital Selective Coherence by Strong Correlations in V_2O_3

We present a study of the paramagnetic metallic and insulating phases of vanadium sesquioxide by means of the $N$th order muffin-tin orbital implementation of density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. The transition is shown to be driven by a correlation-induced enhancement of the crystal field splitting within the $t_{2g}$ manifold, which results in a suppression of the hybridization between the $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^π$ bands. We discuss the changes in the effective quasi-particle band structure caused by the correlations and the corresponding self-energies. At temperatures of about 400 K we find the $a_{1g}$ orbitals to display coherent quasi-particle behavior, while a large imaginary part of the self-energy and broad features in the spectral function indicate that the $e_g^π$ orbitals are still far above their coherence temperature. The local spectral functions are in excellent agreement with recent bulk sensitive photoemission data. Finally, we also make a prediction for angle-resolved photoemission experiments by calculating momentum-resolved spectral functions.

Theory of quasiparticle spectra for Fe, Co, and Ni: bulk and surface

The correlated electronic structure of iron, cobalt and nickel is investigated within the dynamical mean-field theory formalism, using the newly developed full-potential LMTO-based LDA+DMFT code. Detailed analysis of the calculated electron self-energy, density of states and the spectral density are presented for these metals. It has been found that all these elements show strong correlation effects for majority spin electrons, such as strong damping of quasiparticles and formation of a density of states satellite at about -7 eV below the Fermi level. The LDA+DMFT data for fcc nickel and cobalt (111) surfaces and bcc iron (001) surface is also presented. The electron self energy is found to depend strongly on the number of nearest neighbors, and it practically reaches the bulk value already in the second layer from the surface. The dependence of correlation effects on the dimensionality of the problem is also discussed.

Impurity States in Graphene

Defects in graphene are of crucial importance for its electronic and magnetic properties. Here impurity effects on the electronic structure of surrounding carbon atoms are considered and the distribution of the local densities of states (LDOS) is calculated. As the full range from near field to the asymptotic regime is covered, our results are directly accessible by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). We also include exchange scattering at magnetic impurities and eludicate how strongly spin polarized impurity states arise.

Infuence of correlation effects on the of magneto-optical properties of half-metallic ferromagnet NiMnSb

The magneto-optical spectra of NiMnSb were calculated in the framework of the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA) combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). Comparing with results based on plain LSDA, an additional account of many-body correlations via DMFT results in a noticably improved agreement of the theoretical Kerr-rotation and ellipticity spectra with corresponding experimental data.

Model Hamiltonian parameters for half-metallic ferromagnets NiMnSb and CrO2

Using the recently developed Nth-order muffin-tin-orbital (NMTO) based downfolding technique we revisit the electronic properties of half-metallic ferromagnets, the semi-Heusler NiMnSb and rutile CrO2. The NMTO Wannier orbitals for the Mn-d and Cr-t2g manifolds are constructed and the mechanism of chemical bonding is discussed. The effective hopping Hamiltonian parameters are calculated using a NMTO downfolded basis set. We propose model Hamiltonian parameters with possibly minimal basis sets for both half-metallic ferromagnetic alloys.

Half-metallic ferromagnetism induced by dynamic electron correlations in VAs

The electronic structure of the VAs compound in the zinc-blende structure is investigated using a combined density-functional and dynamical mean-field theory approach. Contrary to predictions of a ferromagnetic semiconducting ground state obtained by density-functional calculations, dynamical correlations induce a closing of the gap and produce a half-metallic ferromagnetic state. These results emphasize the importance of dynamic correlations in materials suitable for spintronics.

Electron Correlations and the Minority-Spin Band Gap in Half-Metallic Heusler Alloys

Electron-electron correlations affect the band gap of half-metallic ferromagnets by introducing non-quasiparticle states just above the Fermi level. In contrast to the spin-orbit coupling, a large asymmetric non-quasiparticle spectral weight is present in the minority-spin channel, leading to a peculiar finite-temperature spin depolarization effects. Using recently developed first-principle dynamical mean field theory, we investigate these effects for the half-metallic ferrimagnetic Heusler compound FeMnSb. We discuss depolarization effects in terms of strength of local Coulomb interaction $U$ and temperature in FeMnSb. We propose Ni$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$MnSb alloys as a perspective materials to be used in spin-valve structures and for experimental search of non-quasiparticle states in half-metallic materials.

Nature of non-magnetic strongly-correlated state in delta-plutonium

Ab-initio relativistic dynamical mean-field theory is applied to resolve the long-standing controversy between theory and experiment in the "simple" face-centered cubic phase of plutonium called delta-Pu. In agreement with experiment, neither static nor dynamical magnetic moments are predicted. In addition, the quasiparticle density of states reproduces not only the peak close to the Fermi level, which explains the large coefficient of electronic specific heat, but also main 5f features observed in photoelectron spectroscopy.

Correlation effects in electronic structure of PuCoGa5

We report on results of the first realistic electronic structure calculations of the Pu-based PuCoGa5 superconductor based on the dynamical mean field theory. We find that dynamical correlations due to the local Coulomb interaction between Pu f-electrons lead to substantial modification of the electronic structure with a narrow peak being formed in vicinity of the Fermi energy, in agreement with the experimental photoemission spectra, and in contrast with the recent calculations within the LDA+U method, where only static electronic correlations have been included. Both Pu and Co contribute in equal footing to the narrow peak on the density of states at the Fermi level, the Co partial density of states being prominently affected by electronic correlations on the Pu sites. The k-resolved spectral density is calculated and the theoretical spectral function resolved extended Van Hove singularity near the Fermi energy. This singularity may lead to enchancement of the magnetic susceptebility and favour d-wave superconductivity.

Observation and theoretical description of the pure Fano-effect in the valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets

The pure Fano-effect in angle-integrated valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets has been observed for the first time. A contribution of the intrinsic spin polarization to the spin polarization of the photo-electrons has been avoided by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters. The theoretical description of the resulting spectra reveals a complete analogy to the Fano-effect observed before for paramagnetic transition metals. While the theoretical photo-current and spin difference spectra are found in good quantitative agreement with experiment in the case of Fe and Co only a qualitative agreement could be achieved in the case of Ni by calculations on the basis of plain local spin density approximation (LSDA). Agreement with experimental data could be improved in this case in a very substantial way by a treatment of correlation effects on the basis of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT).

Multiple scattering formalism for correlated systems: A KKR+DMFT approach

We present a charge and self-energy self-consistent computational scheme for correlated systems based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) multiple scattering theory with the many-body effects described by the means of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The corresponding local multi-orbital and energy dependent self-energy is included into the set of radial differential equations for the single-site wave functions. The KKR Green's function is written in terms of the multiple scattering path operator, the later one being evaluated using the single-site solution for the $t$-matrix that in turn is determined by the wave functions. An appealing feature of this approach is that it allows to consider local quantum and disorder fluctuations on the same footing. Within the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) the correlated atoms are placed into a combined effective medium determined by the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) self-consistency condition. Results of corresponding calculations for pure Fe, Ni and Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$ alloys are presented.

Continuous Time Quantum Monte Carlo method for fermions

We present numerically exact continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for fermions with a general non-local in space-time interaction. The new determinantal grand-canonical scheme is based on a stochastic series expansion for the partition function in the interaction representation. The method is particularly applicable for multi-band time-dependent correlations since it does not invoke the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. The test calculations for exactly solvable models as well results for the Green function and for the time-dependent susceptibility of the multi-band super-symmetric model with a spin-flip interaction are discussed.

Correlated adatom trimer on metal surface: A continuous time quantum Monte Carlo study

The problem of three interacting Kondo impurities is solved within a numerically exact continuous time quantum Monte Carlo scheme. A suppression of the Kondo resonance by interatomic exchange interactions for different cluster geometries is investigated. It is shown that a drastic difference between the Heisenberg and Ising cases appears for antiferromagnetically coupled adatoms. The effects of magnetic frustrations in the adatom trimer are investigated, and possible connections with available experimental data are discussed.

Tunable spin transport in CrAs: role of correlation effects

Correlation effects on the electronic structure of half-metallic CrAs in zinc-blende structure are studied for different substrate lattice constants. Depending on the substrate the spectral weight of the non-quasiparticle states might be tuned from a well developed value in the case of InAs substrate to an almost negligible contribution for the GaAs one. A piezoelectric material that would allow the change in the substrate lattice parameters opens the possibility for practical investigations of the switchable (tunable) non-quasiparticle states. Since the latter are important for the tunneling magnetoresistance and related phenomena it creates new opportunities in spintronics.

Kondo resonance for orbitally degenerate systems

Formation of the Kondo state in general two-band Anderson model has been investigated within the numerical renormalization group (NRG) calculations. The Abrikosov-Suhl resonance is essentially asymmetric for the model with one electron per impurity (quarter filling case) in contrast with the one-band case. An external magnetic (pseudo-magnetic) field breaking spin (orbital) degeneracy leads to asymmetric splitting and essential broadening of the many-body resonance. Unlike the standard Anderson model, the ``spin up'' Kondo peak is pinned against the Fermi level, but not suppressed by magnetic field.

Dynamical singlets and correlation-assisted Peierls transition in VO2

A theory of the metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide from the high-temperature rutile to the low- temperature monoclinic phase is proposed on the basis of cluster dynamical mean field theory, in conjunction with the density functional scheme. The interplay of strong electronic Coulomb interactions and structural distortions, in particular the dimerization of vanadium atoms in the low temperature phase, plays a crucial role. We find that VO2 is not a conventional Mott insulator, but that the formation of dynamical V-V singlet pairs due to strong Coulomb correlations is necessary to trigger the opening of a Peierls gap.

Continuous Time Quantum Monte Carlo Method for Fermions: Beyond Auxiliary Field Framework

The scheme is particularly applicable for general multi-band time-dependent correlations since it does not invoke Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. The present determinantal grand-canonical method is based on a stochastic series expansion for the partition function in the interaction representation. The results for the Green function and for the time-dependent susceptibility of multi-orbital super-symmetric impurity model with a spin-flip interaction are presented.
