Nonquasiparticle states in half-metallic ferromagnets

Anomalous magnetic and electronic properties of the half-metallic ferromagnets (HMF) have been discussed. The general conception of the HMF electronic structure which take into account the most important correlation effects from electron-magnon interactions, in particular, the spin-polaron effects, is presented. Special attention is paid to the so called non-quasiparticle (NQP) or incoherent states which are present in the gap near the Fermi level and can give considerable contributions to thermodynamic and transport properties. Prospects of experimental observation of the NQP states in core-level spectroscopy is discussed. Special features of transport properties of the HMF which are connected with the absence of one-magnon spin-flip scattering processes are investigated. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of resistivity in various regimes are calculated. It is shown that the NQP states can give a dominate contribution to the temperature dependence of the impurity-induced resistivity and in the tunnel junction conductivity. First principle calculations of the NQP-states for the prototype half-metallic material NiMnSb within the local-density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) are presented.

Magnetic susceptibility, exchange interactions and spin-wave spectra in the local spin density approximation

Starting from exact expression for the dynamical spin susceptibility in the time-dependent density functional theory a controversial issue about exchange interaction parameters and spin-wave excitation spectra of itinerant electron ferromagnets is reconsidered. It is shown that the original expressions for exchange integrals based on the magnetic force theorem (J. Phys. F14 L125 (1984)) are optimal for the calculations of the magnon spectrum whereas static response function is better described by the ``renormalized'' magnetic force theorem by P. Bruno (Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 087205 (2003)). This conclusion is confirmed by the {\it ab initio} calculations for Fe and Ni.

Correlation effects in Co/Cu and Fe/Cr magnetic multilayers

The electronic structure of Co/Cu(001) and Fe/Cr(001) magnetic multilayers has been investigated within the local density approximation combined with dynamical mean field theory. Our calculation shows enhanced density of states at the Fermi level, suggesting that electronic correlations might play an important role in the transport properties of multilayers.

Frequency-dependent local interactions and low-energy effective models from electronic structure calculations

We propose a systematic procedure for constructing effective models of strongly correlated materials. The parameters, in particular the on-site screened Coulomb interaction U, are calculated from first principles, using the GW approximation. We derive an expression for the frequency-dependent U and show that its high frequency part has significant influence on the spectral functions. We propose a scheme for taking into account the energy dependence of U, so that a model with an energy-independent local interaction can still be used for low-energy properties.

Ab-initio calculations of the optical and magneto-optical properties of moderately correlated systems: accounting for correlation effects

The influence of dynamical correlation effects on the magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic Fe and Ni has been investigated. In addition the temperature dependence of the self-energy and its influence on the DOS and optical conductivity is considered. Magneto-optical properties were calculated on the basis of the one-particle Green's function, which was obtained from the DMFT-SPTF procedure. It is shown that dynamical correlations play a rather important role in weakly correlated Fe and substantially change the spectra for moderately correlated Ni. Magneto-optical properties obtained for both systems are found in better agreement with experiment than by conventional LDA calculations.

Mott transition and suppression of orbital fluctuations in orthorhombic 3$d^{1}$ perovskites

Using $t_{2g}$ Wannier-functions, a low-energy Hamiltonian is derived for orthorhombic $3d^{1}$ transition-metal oxides. Electronic correlations are treated with a new implementation of dynamical mean-field theory for non-cubic systems. Good agreement with photoemission data is obtained. The interplay of correlation effects and cation covalency (GdFeO$_{3}$-type distortions) is found to suppress orbital fluctuations in LaTiO$_{3},$ and even more in YTiO$_{3}$, and to favor the transition to the insulating state.

On the effect of short-range magnetic ordering on electron energy-loss spectra in spinels

The energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) at the oxygen $K$ edge in two $AB_2O_4$ spinels (A=Mg, B=Al,Cr) is reported. In $MgAl_2O_4$ the experimental data is successfully modelled within the LDA framework. In the case of $MgCr_2O_4$ spin-polarisation, in the form of antiferromagnetic ordering on the Cr sub-lattice, must be included despite the fact that the measurements were performed at approximately 30 times above $T_N$. A model in which dynamic short-range antiferromagnetic ordering is present at room temperature is proposed to explain the results of the experiments and calculations.

Non-local Coulomb interactions and metal-insulator transition in Ti$_2$O$_3$: a cluster LDA+DMFT approach

We present an ab initio quantum theory of the metal-insulator transition in Ti$_2$O$_3$. The recently developed cluster LDA+DMFT scheme is applied to describe the many-body features of this compound. The conventional single site DMFT cannot reproduce a low temperature insulating phase for any reasonable values of the Coulomb interaction. We show that the non-local Coulomb interactions and the strong chemical bonding within Ti-Ti pair is the origin of the small gap insulating ground state of Ti$_2$O$_3$.

Nonquasiparticle states in half-metallic ferromagnet NiMnSb

Nonquasiparticle states above the Fermi energy are studied by first-principle dynamical mean field calculations for a prototype half-metallic ferromagnet, NiMnSb. We present a quantitative evaluation of the spectral weight of this characteristic feature and discuss the possible experimental investigation (BIS, NMR, STM and Andreev reflection) to clarify the existence of these states.

Ab initio electronic structure calculation of correlated systems: EMTO-DMFT approach

We propose a self-consistent method for electronic structure calculations of correlated systems, which combines the local spin-density approximation (LSDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The LSDA part is based on the exact muffin-tin orbital approach, meanwhile the DMFT uses a perturbation scheme that includes the T matrix with fluctuation exchange approximation. The current LSDA+DMFT implementation fulfills both self-energy and charge self-consistency requirements. We present results on the electronic structure calculations for bulk 3d transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) and for Fe/Cr magnetic multilayers. The latter demonstrates the importance of the correlation effects for the properties of magnetic heterostructures.

Correlated metals and the LDA+U method

While LDA+U method is well established for strongly correlated materials with well localized orbitals, its application to weakly correlated metals is questionable. By extending the LDA Stoner approach onto LDA+U, we show that LDA+U enhances the Stoner factor, while reducing the density of states. Arguably the most important correlation effects in metals, fluctuation-induced mass renormalization and suppression of the Stoner factor, are missing from LDA+U. On the other hand, for {\it moderately} correlated metals LDA+U may be useful. With this in mind, we derive a new version of LDA+U that is consistent with the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem and can be formulated as a constrained density functional theory. We illustrate all of the above on concrete examples, including the controversial case of magnetism in FeAl.

Spectral density functional approach to electronic correlations and magnetism in crystals

A novel approach to electronic correlations and magnetism of crystals based on realistic electronic structure calculations is reviewed. In its simplest form it is a combination of the ``local density approximation'' (LDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) approaches. Using numerically exact QMC solution to the effective DMFT multi-orbital quantum-impurity problem, a successful description of electronic structure and finite temperature magnetism of transition metals has been achieved. We discuss a simplified perturbation LDA+DMFT scheme which combines the T-matrix and fluctuation-exchange approximation (TM-FLEX). We end with a discussion of cluster generalization of the non-local DMFT scheme and its applications to the magnetism and superconductivity of high-Tc superconductors.

Electronic structure of magnetic molecules V15: LDA+U calculations, X-ray emission and photoelectron spectra

Electronic structure of V$_{15}$ magnetic molecules (K$_6$ [V$_{15}$ As$_6$ O$_{42}$ (H$_2$O)] \cdot 8H$_2$O)$ has been studied using LSDA+U band structure calculations, and measurements of X-ray photoelectron (valence band, core levels) and X-ray fluorescence spectra (vanadium K$β_5$ and L$_{2,3}$, and oxygen K$α$). Experiments confirm that vanadium ions are tetravalent in V$_{15}$, and their local atomic structure is close to that of CaV$_3$O$_7$. Comparison of experimental data with the results of electronic structure calculations show that the LSDA+U method provides a description of the electronic structure of V$_{15}$ which agrees well with experiments.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of correlated metals: A local self-consistent perturbation scheme

In the framework of ab initio dynamical mean field theory for realistic electronic structure calculations a new perturbation scheme which combine the T-matrix and fluctuating exchange approximations has been proposed. This method is less computationally expensive than numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo technics and give an adequate description of the electronic structure and exchange interactions for magnetic metals. We discuss a simple expression for the exchange interactions corresponding to the neglecting of the vertex corrections which becomes exact for the spin-wave stiffness in the local approximation. Electronic structure, correlation effects and exchange interactions for ferromagnetic nickel have been discussed.

Observation of Hubbard Bands in $γ$-Manganese

We present angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the $γ$-phase of manganese as well as a theoretical analysis using a recently developed approach that combines density functional and dynamical mean field methods (LDA+DMFT). The comparison of experimental data and theoretical predictions allows us to identify effects of the Coulomb correlations, namely the presence of broad and undispersive Hubbard bands in this system.

Effect of local Coulomb interactions on the electronic structure and exchange interactions in Mn12 magnetic molecules

We have studied the effect of local Coulomb interactions on the electronic structure of the molecular magnet Mn12-acetate within the LDA+U approach. The account of the on-site repulsion results in a finite energy gap and an integer value of the molecule's magnetic moment, both quantities being in a good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting magnetic moments and charge states of non-equivalent manganese ions agree very well with experiments. The calculated values of the intramolecular exchange parameters depend on the molecule's spin configuration, differing by 25-30% between the ferrimagnetic ground state and the completely ferromagnetic configurations. The values of the ground-state exchange coupling parameters are in reasonable agreement with the recent data on the magnetization jumps in megagauss magnetic fields. Simple estimates show that the obtained exchange parameters can be applied, at least qualitatively, to the description of the spin excitations in Mn12-acetate.

Nature of insulating state in NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$ above charge-ordering transition: a cluster DMFT study

The nature of insulating state driven by electronic correlations in the quarter-filled ladder compound $α'$NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$ is investigated within a cluster dynamical mean-field approach. An extended Hubbard model with first-principle tight-binding parameters have been used. It is shown that the insulating state in the charge-disordered phase of this compound is formed due to the transfer of spectral density and dynamical charge fluctuations where for the latter, the role of inter-site Coulomb interaction is found to be of crucial importance.

Magnetism of correlated systems: beyond LDA

A novel approach to electronic correlations in magnetic crystals which takes into account a dynamical many-body effects is present. In order to to find a frequency dependence of the electron self energy, an effective quantum-impurity many-particle problem need to be solved within the dynamical mean-field theory. The numerically exact QMC-scheme and the spin-polarized fluctuation exchange approximation are used for the self-consistent solution of this single-site many-particle problem. The calculations of effective exchange interaction parameters based on the realistic electronic structure of correlated magnetic crystals have been discussed.
