Metamagnetic Quantum Criticality

A renormalization group treatment of metamagnetic quantum criticality in metals is presented. In clean systems the universality class is found to be of the overdamped, conserving (dynamical exponent z=3) Ising type. Detailed results are obtained for the field and temperature dependence of physical quantities including the differential susceptibility, resistivity and specific heat near the transition. An application of the theory is made to Sr3Ru2O7, which appears to exhibit a metamagnetic critical end-point at a very low temperature and a field of order 5-7T.

Application of the scattering rate sum-rule to the interplane optical conductivity of high temperature superconductors: pseudogap and bi-layer effects

We use a recently proposed model of the interplane conductivity of high temperature superconductors to investigate the `scattering rate sum-rule' introduced by Basov and co-workers. We present a new derivation of the sum-rule. The quantal and thermal fluctuations of the order parameter which have been argued to produce the observed pseudogap behavior are shown to increase the total integrated `scattering rate' but may either increase or decrease the `quasiparticle' contribution from frequencies greater than twice the superconducting gap.

Superconductivity, phase fluctuations and the c-axis conductivity of bilayer high temperature superconductors

We present a theory of the interplane conductivity of bilayer high temperature superconductors, focusing on the effect of quantal and thermal fluctuations on the oscillator strengths of the superfluid stiffness and the bilayer plasmon. We find that the opening of the superconducting gap and establishment of superconducting phase coherence each lead to redistribution of spectral weight over wide energy scales. The factor-of-two relation between the superfluid stiffness and the change below $T_c$ in the oscillator strength of the absorptive part of the conductivity previously derived for single-layer systems, is found to be substantially modified in bilayer systems.

Transition temperature of ferromagnetic semiconductors: a dynamical mean field study

We formulate a theory of doped magnetic semiconductors such as Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As which have attracted recent attention for their possible use in spintronic applications. We solve the theory in the dynamical mean field approximation to find the magnetic transition temperature $T_c$ as a function of magnetic coupling strength $J$ and carrier density $n$. We find that $T_c$ is determined by a subtle interplay between carrier density and magnetic coupling.

Local Defect in Metallic Quantum Critical Systems

We present a theory of a single point, line or plane defect coupling to the square of the order parameter in a metallic system near a quantum critical point at or above its upper critical dimension. At criticality, a spin droplet is nucleated around the defect with droplet core size determined by the strength of the defect potential. Outside the core a universal slowly decaying tail of the droplet is found, leading to many dissipative channels coupling to the droplet and to a complete suppression of quantum tunneling. We propose an NMR experiment to measure the impurity-induced changes in the local spin susceptibility.

The Coulomb Luttinger liquid

The effect of long-ranged Coulomb interaction on the low energy properties (momentum distribution function, density of states, electron spectral function, and $4k_F$ correlation function) of one-dimensional electron systems is determined theoretically. Over a wide, physically relevant energy range the behavior is found to be well described by the conventional, short-ranged interacting, Luttinger liquid results, \textit{with a scale-dependent effective exponent}. An accurate empirical formula for the effective exponent is presented.

Strain driven charge-ordered state in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$

We present evidence for the coexistence of ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered insulating phases in strained thin films of La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ at low temperatures. Such a phase separated state is confirmed using low temperature magnetic force microscopy and magnetotransport measurements. This phase separated state is not observed in the bulk form of this compound and is caused by the structural inhomogeneities due to the non-uniform distribution of strain in the film. The strain weakens the low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state and a charge ordered insulator is formed at the high strain regions. The slow dynamics of the transport properties of the mixed phase is illustrated by measurements of the long time scale relaxation of the electrical resistance.

T=0 Phase Diagram of the Double-Exchange Model

We present the T=0 phase diagram of the double-exchange model (ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model) for all values of the carrier concentration $n$ and Hund's couplng $J$, within dynamical mean field theory. We find that depending on the values of $n$ and $J$, the ground state is either a ferromagnet, a commensurate antiferromagnet or some other incommensurate phase with intermediate wave vectors . The antiferromagnetic phase is separated by first order phase boundaries and wide regimes of phase separation. The transition from the ferromagnetic phase to an incommensurate phase is second order.

Quantum phonons and the charge density wave transition temperature: a dynamical mean field study

We use the dynamical mean-field method to calculate the charge density wave transition temperature of the half-filled Holstein model as function of typical phonon frequency in the physically relevant adiabatic limit of phonon frequency Omega much less than electron bandwidth t. Our work is the first systematic expansion of the charge density wave problem in Omega/t. Quantum phonon effects are found to suppress Tco severely, in agreement with previous work on one dimensional models and numerical studies of the dynamical mean field model in the extreme antiadiabatic limit (Omega ~ t). We suggest that this is why there are very few CDW systems with mean-field transition temperatures much less than a typical phonon frequency.

Theory of Transition Temperature of Magnetic Double Perovskites

We formulate a theory of double perovskite coumpounds such as Sr$_2$FeReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ which have attracted recent attention for their possible uses as spin valves and sources of spin polarized electrons. We solve the theory in the dynamical mean field approximation to find the magnetic transition temperature $T_c$. We find that $T_c$ is determined by a subtle interplay between carrier density and the Fe-Mo/Re site energy difference, and that the non-Fe same-sublattice hopping acts to reduce $T_c$. Our results suggest that presently existing materials do not optimize $T_c$.

Quantum critical effects on transition temperature of magnetically mediated p-wave superconductivity

We determine the behavior of the critical temperature of magnetically mediated p-wave superconductivity near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point in three dimensions, distinguishing universal and non-universal aspects of the result. We find that the transition temperature is non-zero at the critical point, raising the possibility of superconductivity in the ferromagnetic phase.

Metallic and nonmetallic double perovskites: A case study of A$_2$FeReO$_6$ (A= Ca, Sr, Ba)

We have investigated the structure and electronic properties of ferrimagnetic double perovskites, A2FeReO6 (A= Ca, Sr, Ba). The A=Ba phase is cubic (Fm3m) and metallic, while the A=Ca phase is monoclinic (P21/n) and nonmetallic. 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy shows that iron is present mainly in the high-spin (S=5/2) Fe3+ state in the Ca compound, while it occurs in an intermediate state between high-spin Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the Ba compound. It is argued that a direct Re t2g - Re t2g interaction is the main cause for the metallic character of the Ba compound; the high covalency of Ca-O bonds and the monoclinic distortion (which lifts the degeneracy of t2g states) seem to disrupt the Re-Re interaction in the case of the Ca compound, making it non-metallic for the same electron count.

Effects of uniaxial strain in LaMnO_3

The effects of uniaxial strain on the structural, orbital, optical, and magnetic properties of LaMnO_3 are calculated using a general elastic energy expression, along with a tight-binding parameterization of the band theory. Tensile uniaxial strain of the order of 2 % (i.e., of the order of magnitude of those induced in thin films by lattice mismatch with substrates) is found to lead to changes in the magnetic ground state, leading to dramatic changes in the band structure and optical conductivity spectrum. The magnetostriction effect associated with the Neel transition of bulk(unstrained) LaMnO_3 is also determined. Due to the Jahn-Teller coupling, the uniform tetragonal distortion mode is softer in LaMnO_3 than in doped cubic manganates. Reasons why the observed (ππ0) orbital ordering is favored over a (πππ) periodicity are discussed.

Where is the Luttinger liquid in one dimensional semiconductor quantum wire structures?

We present the theoretical basis for analyzing resonant Raman scattering experiments in one-dimensional systems described by the Luttinger liquid fixed point. We make experimentally testable predictions for distinguishing Luttinger liquids from Fermi liquid and argue that presently available quantum wire systems are \textit{not} in the regime where Luttinger liquid effects are important.

Colossal electroresistance and electronic phase separation in mixed-valent manganites

The sensitivity of transport in CMR manganite to external fields is examined using a PZT-based field effect configuration with a La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 channel subjected to electric and magnetic fields, separately and in conjugation. We not only find a colossal electroresistance (CER) of ~76% at 4X10^5 V/cm, but also a remarkable complimentarity of this CER with the widely studied CMR. Specifically, the ERmax (MRmax) of the system is largely independent of the magnetic (electric) field biasing, and for equal conductivity values, the ER (MR) is lower (higher) for T Tp. The size and systematics of the effect strongly favor a percolative phase separation picture.
