Restoring betatron phase coherence in a beam-loaded laser-wakefield accelerator

Matched beam loading in laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), characterizing the state of flattening of the acceleration electric field along the bunch, leads to the minimization of energy spread at high bunch charges. Here, we demonstrate by independently controlling injected charge and acceleration gradients, using the self-truncated ionization injection scheme, that minimal energy spread coincides with a reduction of the normalized beam divergence. With the simultaneous confirmation of a constant beam radius at the plasma exit, deduced from betatron radiation spectroscopy, we attribute this effect to the reduction of chromatic betatron decoherence. Thus, beam loaded LWFA enables highest longitudinal and transverse phase space densities.

Demonstration of a compact plasma accelerator powered by laser-accelerated electron beams

Plasma wakefield accelerators are capable of sustaining gigavolt-per-centimeter accelerating fields, surpassing the electric breakdown threshold in state-of-the-art accelerator modules by 3-4 orders of magnitude. Beam-driven wakefields offer particularly attractive conditions for the generation and acceleration of high-quality beams. However, this scheme relies on kilometer-scale accelerators. Here, we report on the demonstration of a millimeter-scale plasma accelerator powered by laser-accelerated electron beams. We showcase the acceleration of electron beams to 130 MeV, consistent with simulations exhibiting accelerating gradients exceeding 100 GV/m. This miniaturized accelerator is further explored by employing a controlled pair of drive and witness electron bunches, where a fraction of the driver energy is transferred to the accelerated witness through the plasma. Such a hybrid approach allows fundamental studies of beam-driven plasma accelerator concepts at widely accessible high-power laser facilities. It is anticipated to provide compact sources of energetic high-brightness electron beams for quality-demanding applications such as free-electron lasers.

Interferometric optical signature of electron microbunching in laser-driven plasma accelerators

We report observations of coherent optical transition radiation interferometry (COTRI) patterns generated by microbunched ~200-MeV electrons as they emerge from a laser-plasma accelerator. The divergence of the microbunched portion of electrons, deduced by comparison to an analytical COTRI model, is ~6x smaller than the ~3 mrad ensemble beam divergence, while the radius of the microbunched beam, obtained from COTR images on the same shot, is < 3 microns. The combined results show that the microbunched distribution has estimated transverse normalized emittance ~0.5 mm mrad.

High-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy study of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs superconductors

We report a detailed investigation of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs (x = 0, 0.07 and 0.14) samples by means of high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) together with measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties. The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F doping. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large doping scale may be indicative of the ground states' coexistence.

Growth and characterization of epitaxial LuNi2B2C thin films on MgO single crystals

Biaxially textured LuNi2BC thin films with Tc up to 15.8 K and a residual resistivity ratio up to 15 have been prepared. The films were deposited on MgO(110) substrates using pulsed laser deposition from a stoichiometric target. Via the precise control of the deposition rate, a biaxial texture is favored within a broad range of the deposition temperature. The full epitaxial relationship between the borocarbide film, the \luo interface layer and the substrate is (110)[001]MgO II (110)[001]Lu2O3 II (001)[100]LuNi2B2C. A very sharp in--plane alignment of about 1\textdegree and an out--of--plane order of about 2.5\textdegree was achieved in the \luni layer. However, a systematic study using different deposition temperatures shows that the temperature is crucial for phase formation and appealing superconducting properties. Applying optimized deposition conditions, critical temperatures of up to 15.8 K and steep superconducting transitions of about 0.3 K are reproducibly obtained. We further analyzed the upper critical field Hc2 of one film deposited under optimized conditions. It was resistively measured along the [001] direction and fitted with a power law. The value of Hc2(0) = 9.82 T obtained from that fit is in very good agreement with single crystal data and the power exponent describing the positive curvature for small external magnetic fields of about 0.19 indicates a relatively low intraband scattering in the films.

Si-induced superconductivity and structural transformations in DyRh4B4

DyRh4B4 has been known to crystallize in the primitive tetragonal (pt)-structure and to exhibit a ferromagnetic transition at 12 K, the highest magnetic transition temperature in the entire series of the RRh4B4 materials [1]. We show here that our silicon-added samples of the nominal composition DyRh4B4Si0.2 exhibit superconductivity below Tc ~ 4.5 K and an antiferromagnetic transition below TN ~ 2.7 K. The 12 K transition observed in the pt-DyRh4B4 is completely suppressed. Our annealed samples mainly consist of domains of the chemical composition DyRh3.9B4.2Si0.08. These domains contain two crystallographic phases belonging to the body-centred tetragonal (bct)-structure and the orthorhombic (o)-structure. We have reasons to suggest that superconductivity and antiferromagnetic ordering arise from bct- DyRh4B4 phase and, therefore, coexist below TN ~ 2.7 K.

Valence band and core level photoemission spectros-copy of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$

We have investigated the electronic structure of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ (x = 0; 0.1; 0.2) by angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy and local density approximation (LDA) based band structure calculations. The valence band consists of a low energy peak at E = -0.25 eV and a broad structure around E = -5 eV in qualitative agreement with LDA. From the photon energy dependence of these peaks we conclude that the former derives almost exclusively from Fe 3d states. This constitutes experimental evidence for the strong iron character of the relevant states in a broad window around EF and confirms theoretical predictions.

Upper critical field, penetration depth, and depinning frequency of the novel high-temperature superconductor LaFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ studied by microwave surface impedance

Temperature and magnetic field dependent measurements of the microwave surface impedance of superconducting LaFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (\Tc $\approx$ 26K) reveal a very large upper critical field ($B_{\rm c2} \approx 56$T) and a large value of the depinning frequency ($f_{0}\approx 6$GHz); together with an upper limit for the effective London penetration depth, $λ_{\rm eff} \le 200 \rm nm$, our results indicate a strong similarity between this system and the high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconducting cuprates.

Field and Temperature Dependence of the Superfluid Density in LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs Superconductors: A Muon Spin Relaxation Study

We present zero field and transverse field \muSR experiments on the recently discovered electron doped Fe-based superconductor LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs. The zero field experiments on underdoped (x=0.075) and optimally doped (x=0.1) samples rule out any static magnetic order above 1.6 K in these superconducting samples. From transverse field experiments in the vortex phase we deduce the temperature and field dependence of the superfluid density. Whereas the temperature dependence is consistent with a weak coupling BCS s-wave or a dirty d-wave gap function scenario, the field dependence strongly evidences unconventional superconductivity. We obtain the in-plane penetration depth of λ_{ab} (0) = 254(2)nm for LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs and λ_{ab} (0) = 364(8)nm for LaO_{0.925}F_{0.075}FeAs. Further evidence for unconventional superconductivity is provided by the ratio of T_c versus the superfluid density, which is close to the Uemura line of hole doped high-T_c cuprates.

Large magnetoresistance in $π$-conjugated semiconductor thin film devices

Following the recent discovery of large magnetoresistance at room temperature in polyfluorence sandwich devices, we have performed a comprehensive magnetoresistance study on a set of organic semiconductor sandwich devices made from different pi-conjugated polymers and small molecules. The measurements were performed at different temperatures, ranging from 10K to 300K, and at magnetic fields, $B < 100mT$. We observed large negative or positive magnetoresistance (up to 10% at 300K and 10mT) depending on material and device operating conditions. We compare the results obtained in devices made from different materials with the goal of providing a comprehensive picture of the experimental data. We discuss our results in the framework of known magnetoresistance mechanisms and find that none of the existing models can explain our results.
