Recombination rates from potential models close to the unitary limit

We investigate universal behavior in the recombination rate of three bosons close to threshold. Using the He-He system as a reference, we solve the three-body Schrödinger equation above the dimer threshold for different potentials having large values of the two-body scattering length $a$. To this aim we use the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion and we extract the $S$-matrix through the integral relations recently derived. The results are compared to the universal form, $α\approx 67.1\sin^2[s_0\ln(κ_*a)+γ]$, for different values of $a$ and selected values of the three-body parameter $κ_*$. A good agreement with the universal formula is obtained after introducing a particular type of finite-range corrections, which have been recently proposed by two of the authors in Ref.[1]. Furthermore, we analyze the validity of the above formula in the description of a very different system: neutron-neutron-proton recombination. Our analysis confirms the universal character of the process in systems of very different scales having a large two-body scattering length.

Effect of three-nucleon interaction in p-3He elastic scattering

We present a detailed study of the effect of different three-nucleon interaction models in p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. In particular, two models have been considered: one derived from effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order and one derived from a more phenomenological point of view -- the so-called Illinois model. The four-nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonics technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We have found that the inclusion of either one of the other force model improves the agreement with the experimental data, in particular for the proton vector analyzing power.

Universal nature and finite-range corrections in elastic atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold

We investigate universal behavior in elastic atom-dimer scattering below the dimer breakup threshold calculating the atom-dimer effective-range function $ak\cotδ$. Using the He-He system as a reference, we solve the Schrödinger equation for a family of potentials having different values of the two-body scattering length $a$ and we compare our results to the universal zero-range form deduced by Efimov, $ak\cotδ=c_1(ka)+c_2(ka)\cot[s_0\ln(κ_*a)+ϕ(ka)]$, for selected values of the three-body parameter $κ_*$. Using the parametrization of the universal functions $c_1,c_2,ϕ$ given in the literature, a good agreement with the universal formula is obtained after introducing a particular type of finite-range corrections. Furthermore, we show that the same parametrization describes a very different system: nucleon-deuteron scattering below the deuteron breakup threshold. Our analysis confirms the universal character of the process, and relates the pole energy in the effective-range function of nucleon-deuteron scattering to the three-body parameter $κ_*$.

Efimov Physics in small bosonic clusters

We study small clusters of bosons, $A=2,3,4,5,6$, characterized by a resonant interaction. Firstly, we use a soft-gaussian interaction that reproduces the values of the dimer binding energy and the atom-atom scattering length obtained with LM2M2 potential, a widely used $^4$He-$^4$He interaction. We change the intensity of the potential to explore the clusters' spectra in different regions with large positive and large negative values of the two-body scattering length and we report the clusters' energies on Efimov plot, which makes the scale invariance explicit. Secondly, we repeat our calculation adding a repulsive three-body force to reproduce the trimer binding energy. In all the region explored, we have found that these systems present two states, one deep and one shallow close to the $A-1$ threshold, and scale invariance has been investigated for these states. The calculations are performed by means of Hyperspherical Harmonics basis set.

Energy spectra of small bosonic clusters having a large two-body scattering length

In this work we investigate small clusters of bosons using the hyperspherical harmonic basis. We consider systems with $A=2,3,4,5,6$ particles interacting through a soft inter-particle potential. In order to make contact with a real system, we use an attractive gaussian potential that reproduces the values of the dimer binding energy and the atom-atom scattering length obtained with one of the most widely used $^4$He-$^4$He interactions, the LM2M2 potential. The intensity of the potential is varied in order to explore the clusters' spectra in different regions with large positive and large negative values of the two-body scattering length. In addition, we include a repulsive three-body force to reproduce the trimer binding energy. With this model, consisting in the sum of a two- and three-body potential, we have calculated the spectrum of the four, five and six particle systems. In all the region explored, we have found that these systems present two bound states, one deep and one shallow close to the $A-1$ threshold. Some universal relations between the energy levels are extracted; in particular, we have estimated the universal ratios between thresholds of the three-, four-, and five-particle continuum using the two-body gaussian

Integral relations and the adiabatic expansion method for 1+2 reactions above the breakup threshold: Helium trimers with soft-core potentials

The integral relations formalism introduced in \cite{bar09,rom11}, and designed to describe 1+$N$ reactions, is extended here to collision energies above the threshold for the target breakup. These two relations are completely general, and in this work they are used together with the adiabatic expansion method for the description of 1+2 reactions. The neutron-deuteron breakup, for which benchmark calculations are available, is taken as a test of the method. The s-wave collision between the $^4$He atom and $^4$He$_2$ dimer above the breakup threshold and the possibility of using soft-core two-body potentials plus a short-range three-body force will be investigated. Comparisons to previous calculations for the three-body recombination and collision dissociation rates will be shown.

Effect of three nucleon forces in p-3He scattering

The effect of the inclusion of different models of three nucleon (3N) forces in p-3He elastic scattering at low energies is studied. Two models have been considered: one derived from effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order and one derived from a more phenomenological point of view -- the so-called Illinois model. The four nucleon scattering observables are calculated using the Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique and the results are compared with available experimental data. We have found that with the inclusion of both 3N force models the agreement with the experimental data is improved, in particular for the proton vector analyzing power A_y.

Three-nucleon contact interaction at the next-to-leading order

A satisfactory description of bound and scattering states of the three-nucleon (3N) system is still lacking, contrary to what happens in the two-nucleon case. In the framework of chiral effective theory, it is possible that a realistic 3N interaction will require the inclusion of subleading contact terms, which are unconstrained by chiral symmetry. We construct the minimal 3N contact Lagrangian imposing all constraints from the discrete symmetries, Fierz identities and Poincaré covariance, and show that it consists of 10 independent operators. By integrating out the pions from the effective theory we derive the pion-induced contributions to the corresponding low-energy constants (LECs), and find no clear signal of convergence of the pionful theory between N2LO and N3LO.

Six-bodies calculations using the Hyperspherical Harmonics method

In this work we show results for light nuclear systems and small clusters of helium atoms using the hyperspherical harmonics basis. We use the basis without previous symmetrization or antisymmetrization of the state. After the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix, the eigenvectors have well defined symmetry under particle permutation and the identification of the physical states is possible. We show results for systems composed up to six particles. As an example of a fermionic system, we consider a nucleon system interacting through the Volkov potential, used many times in the literature. For the case of bosons, we consider helium atoms interacting through a potential model which does not present a strong repulsion at short distances. We have used an attractive gaussian potential to reproduce the values of the dimer binding energy, the atom-atom scattering length, and the effective range obtained with one of the most widely used He-He interaction, the LM2M2 potential. In addition, we include a repulsive hypercentral three-body force to reproduce the trimer binding energy.

Spectra of helium clusters with up to six atoms using soft core potentials

In this work we investigate small clusters of helium atoms using the hyperspherical harmonic basis. We consider systems with $A=2,3,4,5,6$ atoms with an inter-particle potential which does not present a strong repulsion at short distances. We use an attractive gaussian potential that reproduces the values of the dimer binding energy, the atom-atom scattering length, and the effective range obtained with one of the widely used He-He interactions, the LM2M2 potential. In systems with more than two atoms we consider a repulsive three-body force that, by construction, reproduces the trimer binding energy of the LM2M2 potential. With this model, consisting in the sum of a two- and three-body potential, we have calculated the spectrum of clusters formed by four, five and six helium atoms. We have found that these systems present two bound states, one deep and one shallow close to the threshold fixed by the energy of the $(A-1)$-atom system. Universal relations between the energies of the excited state of the $A$-atom system and the ground state energy of the $(A-1)$-atom system are extracted as well as the ratio between the ground state of the $A$-atom system and the ground state energy of the trimer.

Chiral effective field theory predictions for muon capture on deuteron and 3He

The muon-capture reactions 2H(μ^-,ν_μ)nn and 3He(μ^-,ν_μ)3H are studied with nuclear strong-interaction potentials and charge-changing weak currents, derived in chiral effective field theory. The low-energy constants (LEC's) c_D and c_E, present in the three-nucleon potential and (c_D) axial-vector current, are constrained to reproduce the A=3 binding energies and the triton Gamow-Teller matrix element. The vector weak current is related to the isovector component of the electromagnetic current via the conserved-vector-current constraint, and the two LEC's entering the contact terms in the latter are constrained to reproduce the A=3 magnetic moments. The muon capture rates on deuteron and 3He are predicted to be 399(3) sec^{-1} and 1494 (21) sec^{-1}, respectively, where the spread accounts for the cutoff sensitivity as well as uncertainties in the LEC's and electroweak radiative corrections. By comparing the calculated and precisely measured rates on 3He, a value for the induced pseudoscalar form factor is obtained in good agreement with the chiral perturbation theory prediction.

Theoretical description of three- and four-nucleon scattering states using bound-state-like wave functions

Bound-state-like wave functions are used to determine the scattering matrix corresponding to low energy $N-d$ and $p-^3$He collisions. To this end, the coupled channel form of the integral relations derived from the Kohn variational principle is used. The construction of degenerate bound-state-like wave functions belonging to the continuum spectrum of the Hamiltonian is discussed. Examples are shown using realistic nucleon-nucleon forces.

Benchmark calculation of n-3H and p-3He scattering

The n-3H and p-3He elastic phase-shifts below the trinucleon disintegration thresholds are calculated by solving the 4-nucleon problem with three different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions (the I-N3LO model by Entem and Machleidt, the Argonne v18 potential model, and a low-k model derived from the CD-Bonn potential). Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas, Hyperspherical Harmonics, and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been used and their respective results are compared. For both n-3H and p-3He we observe a rather good agreement between the three different theoretical methods. We also compare the theoretical predictions with the available experimental data, confirming the large underprediction of the p-3He analyzing power.

Selected Topics in Three- and Four-Nucleon Systems

Two different aspects of the description of three- and four-nucleon systems are addressed. The use of bound state like wave functions to describe scattering states in $N-d$ collisions at low energies and the effects of some of the widely used three-nucleon force models in selected polarization observables in the three- and four-nucleon systems are discussed.

General integral relations for the description of scattering states using the hyperspherical adiabatic basis

In this work we investigate 1+2 reactions within the framework of the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method. To this aim two integral relations, derived from the Kohn variational principle, are used. A detailed derivation of these relations is shown. The expressions derived are general, not restricted to relative $s$ partial waves, and with applicability in multichannel reactions. The convergence of the ${\cal K}$-matrix in terms of the adiabatic potentials is investigated. Together with a simple model case used as a test for the method, we show results for the collision of a $^4$He atom on a \dimer dimer (only the elastic channel open), and for collisions involving a $^6$Li and two $^4$He atoms (two channels open).

The helium trimer with soft-core potentials

The helium trimer is studied using two- and three-body soft-core potentials. Realistic helium-helium potentials present an extremely strong short-range repulsion and support a single, very shallow, bound state. The description of systems with more than two helium atoms is difficult due to the very large cancellation between kinetic and potential energy. We analyze the possibility of describing the three helium system in the ultracold regime using a gaussian representation of a widely used realistic potential, the LM2M2 interaction. However, in order to describe correctly the trimer ground state a three-body force has to be added to the gaussian interaction. With this potential model the two bound states of the trimer and the low energy scattering helium-dimer phase shifts obtained with the LM2M2 potential are well reproduced.

Relativistic description of 3He(e,e'p)2H

The Relativistic Distorted-Wave Impulse Approximation is used to describe the $^3$He($e,e^\prime p$)$^2$H process. We describe the $^3$He nucleus within the adiabatic hyperspherical expansion method with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. The overlap between the $^3$He and the deuteron wave functions can be accurately computed from a three-body calculation. The nucleons are described by solutions of the Dirac equation with scalar and vector (S-V) potentials. The wave function of the outgoing proton is obtained by solving the Dirac equation with a S-V optical potential fitted to elastic proton scattering data on the residual nucleus. Within this theoretical framework, we compute the cross section of the reaction and other observables like the transverse-longitudinal asymmetry, and compare them with the available experimental data measured at JLab.

Muon capture on deuteron and 3He

The muon capture reactions 2H(μ^-,ν_μ)nn and 3He(μ^-,ν_μ)3H are studied with conventional or chiral realistic potentials and consistent weak currents. The initial and final A=2 and 3 nuclear wave functions are obtained from the Argonne v18 or chiral N3LO two-nucleon potential, in combination with, respectively, the Urbana IX or chiral N2LO three-nucleon potential in the case of A=3. The weak current consists of polar- and axial-vector components. The former are related to the isovector piece of the electromagnetic current via the conserved-vector-current hypothesis. These and the axial currents are derived either in a meson-exchange or in a chiral effective field theory (chiEFT) framework. There is one parameter (either the N-to-Δaxial coupling constant in the meson-exchange model, or the strength of a contact term in the chiEFT model) which is fixed by reproducing the Gamow-Teller matrix element in tritium beta-decay. The model dependence relative to the adopted interactions and currents (and cutoff sensitivity in the chiEFT currents) is weak, resulting in total rates of 392.0 +/- 2.3 Hz for A=2, and 1484 +/- 13 Hz for A=3, where the spread accounts for this model dependence.
