Analysis of three-nucleon forces effects in the $A=3$ system

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the description of the $A=3,4$ nuclear systems the $χ^2$ per datum results to be much bigger than one. In particular it is not possible to reproduce the three- and four-nucleon binding energies and the $n-d$ scattering length simultaneously. This is one manifestation of the necessity of including a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. In this paper we perform an analysis of some, widely used, three-nucleon force models. We analyze their capability to describe the aforementioned quantities and, to improve their description, we propose modifications in the parametrization of the models. The effects of these new parametrization are studied in some polarization observables at low energies.

Thermal neutron captures on $d$ and $^3$He

We report on a study of the $nd$ and $n\,^3$He radiative captures at thermal neutron energies, using wave functions obtained from either chiral or conventional two- and three-nucleon realistic potentials with the hyperspherical harmonics method, and electromagnetic currents derived in chiral effective field theory up to one loop. The predicted $nd$ and $n\,^3$He cross sections are in good agreement with data, but exhibit a significant dependence on the input Hamiltonian. A comparison is also made between these and new results for the $nd$ and $n\,^3$He cross sections obtained in the conventional framework for both potentials and currents.

Non-symmetrized hyperspherical harmonic basis for $A$-bodies

The use of the hyperspherical harmonic (HH) basis in the description of bound states in an $A$-body system composed by identical particles is normally preceded by a symmetrization procedure in which the statistic of the system is taken into account. This preliminary step is not strictly necessary; the direct use of the HH basis is possible, even if the basis has not a well defined behavior under particle permutations. In fact, after the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix, the eigenvectors reflect the symmetries present in it. They have well defined symmetry under particle permutation and the identification of the physical states is possible, as it will be shown in specific cases. The problem related to the large degeneration of the basis is circumvented by constructing the Hamiltonian matrix as a sum of products of sparse matrices. This particular representation of the Hamiltonian is well suited for a numerical iterative diagonalization, where only the action of the matrix on a vector is needed. As an example we compute bound states for systems with $A=3-6$ particles interacting through a short-range central interaction. We also consider the case in which the potential is restricted to act in relative s-waves with and without the inclusion of the Coulomb potential. This very simple model predicts results in qualitative good agreement with the experimental data and it represents a first step in a project dedicated to the use of the HH basis to describe bound and low energy scattering states in light nuclei.

The parity-violating asymmetry in the 3He(n,p)3H reaction

The longitudinal asymmetry induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in the charge-exchange reaction 3He(n,p)3H at vanishing incident neutron energies. An expression for the PV observable is derived in terms of T-matrix elements for transitions from the {2S+1}L_J=1S_0 and 3S_1 states in the incoming n-3He channel to states with J=0 and 1 in the outgoing p-3H channel. The T-matrix elements involving PV transitions are obtained in first-order perturbation theory in the hadronic weak-interaction potential, while those connecting states of the same parity are derived from solutions of the strong-interaction Hamiltonian with the hyperspherical-harmonics method. The coupled-channel nature of the scattering problem is fully accounted for. Results are obtained corresponding to realistic or chiral two- and three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. The asymmetries, predicted with PV pion and vector-meson coupling constants corresponding (essentially) to the DDH "best values" set, range from -9.44 to -2.48 in units of 10^{-8}, depending on the input strong-interaction Hamiltonian. This large model dependence is a consequence of cancellations between long-range (pion) and short-range (vector-meson) contributions, and is of course sensitive to the assumed values for the PV coupling constants.

Proton-3He elastic scattering at low energies and the "A_y Puzzle"

The Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique are applied to study p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. Preliminary results obtained using several interaction models are reported. The calculations are compared to a recent phase shift analysis performed at the Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory and to the available experimental data. Using a three-nucleon interaction derived from chiral perturbation theory at N2LO, we have found a noticeable reduction of the discrepancy observed for the A_y observable.

Variational description of continuum states in terms of integral relations

Two integral relations derived from the Kohn Variational Principle (KVP) are used for describing scattering states. In usual applications the KVP requires the explicit form of the asymptotic behavior of the scattering wave function. This is not the case when the integral relations are applied since, due to their short range nature, the only condition for the scattering wave function $Ψ$ is that it be the solution of $(H-E)Ψ=0$ in the internal region. Several examples are analyzed for the computation of phase-shifts from bound state type wave functions or, in the case of the scattering of charged particles, it is possible to obtain phase-shifts using free asymptotic conditions. As a final example we discuss the use of the integral relations in the case of the Hyperspherical Adiabatic method.

Comparative study of three-nucleon force models in $A=3,4$ systems

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the description of the $A=3,4$ nuclei, it is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies simultaneously. This is one manifestation of the necessity of including a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. In this paper we will perform a comparative study of some, widely used, three-nucleon force models. We will analyze their capability to describe the aforementioned binding energies as well as the $n-d$ doublet scattering length. A correct description of these quantities can be considered a stringent requirement for a nuclear Hamiltonian containing two- and three-nucleon interaction terms. As we will show, this requirement is not fulfilled by several of the models available in the literature. To satisfy it, we propose modifications in the parametrization of the three-nucleon forces and we study their effects on few selected $N-d$ low energy scattering observables.

Recent Developments in Few-Nucleon Scattering

Using modern nucleon-nucleon interactions in the description of the $A=3,4$ nuclei, it is not possible to reproduce both the three- and four-nucleon binding energies simultaneously. This is one manifestation of the necessity of including a three-nucleon force in the nuclear Hamiltonian. Several models of the three-nucleon force exist and are applied in the description of light nuclei. However, as it is discussed here, a simultaneous description of the three- and four-body binding energies and the $n-d$ doublet scattering length seems to be problematic. Accordingly, a comparative study of some of these models is performed. In a different analysis, we study applications of the Kohn Variational Principle, formulated in terms of integral relations, to describe $N-d$ scattering processes.

Integral relations for three-body continuum states with the adiabatic expansion

Application of the Hyperspherical Adiabatic expansion to describe three-body scattering states suffers the problem of a very slow convergence. Contrary to what happens for bound states, a huge number of hyperradial equations has to be solved, and even if done, the extraction of the scattering amplitude is problematic. In this paper we show how to obtain accurate scattering phase shifts using the Hyperspherical Adiabatic expansion. To this aim two integral relations, derived from the Kohn Variational Principle, are used. The convergence of this procedure is as fast as for bound states.

N-d Elastic Scattering Using the Hyperspherical Harmonics Approach with Realistic Local and Non-Local Interactions

The application of the hyperspherical harmonic approach to the case of the N-d scattering problem below deuteron breakup threshold is described. The nuclear Hamiltonian includes two- and three-nucleon interactions, in particular the Argonne v_{18}, the N3LO-Idaho, and the V_{low k} two-nucleon, and the Urbana IX and N2LO three-nucleon interactions. Some of these models are local, some are non-local. Also electromagnetic effects are included. Accurate calculations for many scattering observables at various center-of-mass energies are performed and the results are compared with the available experimental data. Furthermore, a χ^2 analysis of some of the Hamiltonian models has been performed to compare their capability to describe the scattering process.

The harmonic hyperspherical basis for identical particles without permutational symmetry

The hyperspherical harmonic basis is used to describe bound states in an $A$--body system. The approach presented here is based on the representation of the potential energy in terms of hyperspherical harmonic functions. Using this representation, the matrix elements between the basis elements are simple, and the potential energy is presented in a compact form, well suited for numerical implementation. The basis is neither symmetrized nor antisymmetrized, as required in the case of identical particles; however, after the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian matrix, the eigenvectors reflect the symmetries present in it, and the identification of the physical states is possible, as it will be shown in specific cases. We have in mind applications to atomic, molecular, and nuclear few-body systems in which symmetry breaking terms are present in the Hamiltonian; their inclusion is straightforward in the present method. As an example we solve the case of three and four particles interacting through a short-range central interaction and Coulomb potential.

Neutron-triton elastic scattering

The Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonics technique are applied to study n-3H elastic scattering at low energies. In this contribution the first results obtained using a non-local realistic interaction derived from the chiral perturbation theory are reported. They are found to be in good agreement with those obtained solving the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations. The calculated total and differential cross sections are compared with the available experimental data. The effect of including a three-nucleon interaction is also discussed.

Trinucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors and the Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics

This contribution briefly illustrates preliminary calculations of the electromagnetic form factors of $^3$He and $^3$H, obtained within the Light-front Relativistic Hamiltonian Dynamics, adopting i) a Poincaré covariant current operator, without dynamical two-body currents, and ii) realistic nuclear bound states with $S$, $P$ and $D$ waves. The kinematical region of few $(GeV/c)^2$, relevant for forthcoming TJLAB experiments, has been investigated, obtaining possible signatures of relativistic effects for $Q^2>2.5 ~(GeV/c)^2$.

Three-Nucleon Continuum by means of the Hyperspherical Adiabatic Method

This paper investigates the possible use of the Hyperspherical Adiabatic basis in the description of scattering states of a three-body system. In particular, we analyze a 1+2 collision process below the three-body breakup. The convergence patterns for the observables of interest are analyzed by comparison to a unitary equivalent Hyperspherical Harmonic expansion. Furthermore, we compare and discuss two different possible choices for describing the asymptotic configurations of the system, related to the use of Jacobi or hyperspherical coordinates. In order to illustrate the difficulties and advantages of the approach two simple numerical applications are shown in the case of neutron-deuteron scattering at low energies using s-wave interactions. We found that the optimization driven by the Hyperspherical Adiabatic basis is not as efficient for scattering states as in bound state applications.

A high-precision variational approach to three- and four-nucleon bound and zero-energy scattering states

The hyperspherical harmonic (HH) method has been widely applied in recent times to the study of the bound states, using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle, and of low-energy scattering processes, using the Kohn variational principle, of A=3 and 4 nuclear systems. When the wave function of the system is expanded over a sufficiently large set of HH basis functions, containing or not correlation factors, quite accurate results can be obtained for the observables of interest. In this paper, the main aspects of the method are discussed together with its application to the A=3 and 4 nuclear bound and zero-energy scattering states. Results for a variety of nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) local or non-local interactions are reported. In particular, NN and 3N interactions derived in the framework of the chiral effective field theory and NN potentials from which the high momentum components have been removed, as recently presented in the literature, are considered for the first time within the context of the HH method. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, to present a complete description of the HH method for bound and scattering states, including also detailed formulas for the computation of the matrix elements of the NN and 3N interactions. Second, to report accurate results for bound and zero-energy scattering states obtained with the most commonly used interaction models. These results can be useful for comparison with those obtained by other techniques and are a significant test for different future approaches to such problems.

Neutron spin rotation in \vec{n}-d scattering

The neutron spin rotation induced by parity-violating (PV) components in the nucleon-nucleon potential is studied in \vec{n}-d scattering at zero energy. Results are obtained corresponding to the Argonne v_{18} two-nucleon and Urbana-IX three-nucleon strong-interaction potentials in combination with either the DDH or pionless EFT model for the weak-interaction potential. We find that this observable is dominated by the contribution of the long-range part of the PV potential associated with pion exchange. Thus its measurement could provide a further constraint, complementary to that coming from measurements of the photon asymmetry in \vec{n}-p radiative capture, on the strength of this component of the hadronic weak interaction.

Lightest scalar in the SU_L(2)*SU_R(2) linear σmodel

We consider the lightest scalar meson in the frame of the $SU_L(2)\times SU_R(2)$ linear $σ$ model, keeping in mind that this model could be the low energy realization of the two-flavour QCD. We show that the $σ$ field is described by its four-quark component at least in the $σ$ resonance energy (virtuality) region and the $σ\toγγ$ decay is the four quark transition. We emphasize that residues of the $σ$ pole in the $ππ\toππ$ and $γγ\toππ$ amplitudes do not give an idea about the $σ$ meson nature, and the progress in studying the $σ$ meson production mechanisms in different processes could essentially further us in understanding its nature.
