Nuclei in the toy world: beyond the Pomeron in zero transverse dimensions

We explore possible extensions of the $t$-channel and $s$-channel unitary model of high energy evolution in zero transverse dimensions appropriate to very high energy/atomic number where the dipole density in a toy hadron is parametrically high.We suggest that the appropriate generalization is to allow emission of more than one dipole in a single step of energy evolution. We construct explicitly such a model that preserves the $t$-channel and s-channel unitarity and have the correct low density limit, and study the particle multiplicity distribution resulting from this evolution. We consider initial conditions of a single dipole and many dipoles at initial rapidity. We observe that the saturation regime in this model is preceded by a parametric range of rapidities $\frac{1}{α_s}\ln\frac{1}{α_s}<Y<\frac{1}{α_s}\ln\frac{1}{α_s^2}$, where the saturation effects are still unimportant, but multiple emissions determine the properties of the evolution. We also discuss the influence of the saturation on the parton cascade and, in particular, find that in the saturation regime the entropy of partons becomes $S \approx \h \ln N$ where $N$ is the mean multiplicity.

Hanbury-Brown-Twiss measurements at large rapidity separations, or can we measure the proton radius in p-A collisions?

We point out that current calculations of inclusive two-particle correlations in p-A collisions based on the Color Glass Condensate approach exhibit a contribution from Hanbury-Brown-Twiss correlations. These HBT correlations are quite distinct from the standard ones, in that they are apparent for particles widely separated in rapidity. The transverse size of the emitter which is reflected in these correlations is the gluonic size of the proton. This raises an interesting possibility of measuring the proton size directly by the HBT effect of particle pairs produced in p-A collisions.

QCD Reggeon Calculus From KLWMIJ/JIMWLK Evolution: Vertices, Reggeization and All

We show explicitly how the high energy QCD evolution generated by the KLWMIJ Hamiltonian can be cast in the form of the QCD Reggeon Field Theory. We show how to reduce the KLWMIJ Hamitonian to physical color singlet degrees of freedom. We suggest a natural way of defining the Pomeron and other Reggeons in the framework of the KLWMIJ evolution and derive the QCD Reggeon Field Theory Hamiltonian which includes several lowest Reggeon operators. This Hamiltonian generates evolution equations for all Reggeons in the case of dilute-dense scattering, including the nonlinear Balitsky-Kovchegov equation for the Pomeron. We also find explicit expressions for the Reggeon conjugate operators in terms of QCD operators, and derive their evolution equations. This provides a natural and unambiguous framework for reggeization procedure introduced in \cite{BW, BE}. The Bartels triple Pomeron vertex is inherited directly from the RFT Hamiltonian. For simplicity in the bulk of the paper we work in the large $N_c$ limit.

Classicalization and Unitarity

We point out that the scenario for UV completion by "classicalization", proposed recently is in fact Wilsonian in the classical Wilsonian sense. It corresponds to the situation when a field theory has a nontrivial UV fixed point governed by a higher dimensional operator. Provided the kinetic term is a relevant operator around this point the theory will flow in the IR to the free scalar theory. Physically, "classicalization", if it can be realized, would correspond to a situation when the fluctuations of the field operator in the UV are smaller than in the IR. As a result there exists a clear tension between the "classicalization" scenario and constraints imposed by unitarity on a quantum field theory, making the existence of classicalizing unitary theories questionable.

Particle Production at High Energy and Large Transverse Momentum - "The Hybrid Formalism" Revisited

We revisit the "`hybrid formalism"' for particle production used recently to study saturation effects in single hadron multiplicities at forward rapidities at RHIC and LHC. We point out that at leading twist there is an extra contribution to the formulae used so far, which corresponds to particle production via inelastic scattering of the projectile partons on the target fields. This contribution is expected to be small due to kinematics at very forward rapidities/very high transverse momenta, but should be significant at high momenta and very high energies. This contribution is expected to be most affected by saturation effects and is therefore an interesting object of study in the context of possible onset of saturation at high energies.

More on eikonal approximation for high energy scattering

We formulate eikonal approximation to the calculation of high energy scattering amplitude in the frame where both colliding objects are very energetic. We express the eikonal scattering matrix in terms of the color charge densities of the colliding objects. The calculation is performed in the Hamiltonian formalism. We also show that the appearance of the longitudinal electric and magnetic fields immediately following the collision is fully taken into account in the eikonal approximation.

Treading on the cut: Semi inclusive observables at high energy

We develop the formalizm for calculating semi inclusive observables at high energy in the JIMWLK/KLWMIJ approach. We consider several examples including diffractive processes, elastic and inclusive over the target degrees of freedom, scattering with fixed total transverse momentum transfer and inclusive gluon production. We discuss evolution of these observables with respect to various rapidity variables involved in their definitions (total rapidity, rapidity gap, width of diffractive interval etc.). We also discuss the dipole model limit of these observables and derive closed simple (as opposed to functional) differential equations in this approximation. We point out that there are some interesting differences between the full JIMWLK/KLWMIJ evolution and the dipole model evolution of diffractive cross section. In particular we show that in the dipole approximation the target does not diffract beyond the valence rapidity interval, consistently with the intuition suggested by the Pomeron fan diagramms. On the other hand such diffractive processes do exist in the full JIMWLK/KLWMIJ approach, albeit suppressed by the factor 1/N_c^2.

SUSY 3D Georgi-Glashow model at finite temperature

We study the finite-temperature properties of the supersymmetric version of (2+1)D Georgi-Glashow model. As opposed to its nonsupersymmetric counterpart, the parity symmetry in this theory at zero temperature is spontaneously broken by the bilinear photino condensate. We find that as the temperature is raised, the deconfinement and the parity restoration occur in this model at the same point $T_c=g^2/8π$. The transition is continuous, but is not of the Ising type as in nonsupersymmetric Georgi-Glashow model, but rather of the Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless type as in $Z_4$-invariant spin model.

On Nonexistence of Magnetic Charge in Pure Yang-Mills Theories

We prove that magnetic charge does not exist as a physical observable on the physical Hilbert space of the pure SU(2) gauge theory. The abelian magnetic monopoles seen in lattice simulations are then interpreted as artifacts of gauge fixing. The apparent physical scaling properties of the monopole density in the continuum limit observed on the lattice are attributed to the correct scaling properties of physical objects - magnetic vortices, as first argued by Greensite et. al. We can show that a local gauge transformation of a certain type can " create" abelian monopole-antimonopole pairs along magnetic vortices. This gauge transformation exists in pure SU(N) gauge theory at any $N$.

Variational analysis of the deconfinement phase transition

We study the deconfining phase transition in 3+1 dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory using a gauge invariant variational calculation. We generalize the variational ansatz of Phys. Rev. D52, 3719 (1995) to mixed states (density matrices) and minimize the free energy. For N > 3 we find a first order phase transition with the transition temperature of T_C = 450 Mev. Below the critical temperature the Polyakov loop has vanishing expectation value, while above T_C, its average value is nonzero. According to the standard lore this corresponds to the deconfining transition. Within the accuracy of our approximation the entropy of the system in the low temperature phase vanishes. The latent heat is not small but, rather, is of the order of the nonperturbative vacuum energy.

Magnetic Z(N) symmetry in hot QCD and the spatial Wilson loop

We discuss the relation between the deconfining phase transition in gauge theories and the realization of the magnetic Z(N) symmetry. At low temperature the Z(N) symmetry is spontaneously broken while above the phase transition it is restored. This is intimately related to the change of behaviour of the spatial 't Hooft loop discussed in hep-ph/9909516. We also point out that the realization of the magnetic symmetry has bearing on the behaviour of the spatial Wilson loop. We give a physical argument to the effect that at zero temperature the spatial Wilson loop must have perimeter law behaviour in the symmetric phase but area law behaviour in the spontaneously broken phase. At high temperature the argument does not hold and the restoration of magnetic Z(N) is consistent with area law for the Wilson loop.

Spatial 't Hooft loop, hot QCD and Z_N domain walls

We show that the deconfinement phase transition in the pure Yang-Mills theory can be characterized by the change of behaviour the spatial 't Hooft loop, V(C). In the confining phase V has a perimeter law behaviour V(C)= exp{-mP(C)}, while in the deconfined phase it has the area law behaviour V(C)= exp{-αS(C)}. We show that the area law behaviour of the 't Hooft loop is intimately related to the plasma-like distribution of the color charges in the hot QCD vacuum. We also show that the "dual string tension" αis equal to the "wall tension" of the Z_N domain walls previously calculated by Bhattacharya et.al. All these properties generalize immediately to other nonabelian theories without fundamental charges, such as supersymmetric Yang Mills. In theories with fundamental charges the 't Hooft loop presumably has the area law behaviour already at zero temperature and therefore is not a good order parameter in the strict sense.

Sphaleron Transition Rate in Presence of Dynamical Fermions

We investigate the effect of dynamical fermions on the sphaleron transition rate at finite temperature for the Abelian Higgs model in one spatial dimension. The fermion degrees of freedom are included through bosonization. Using a numerical simulation, we find that massless fermions do not change the rate within the measurement accuracy. Surprisingly, the exponential dependence of the sphaleron energy on the Yukawa coupling is not borne out by the transition rate, which shows a very weak dependence on the fermion mass.

Domain Walls in Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories

We present a detailed analysis of the domain walls in supersymmetric gluodynamics and SQCD. We use the (corrected) Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective Lagrangians to explicitely obtain the wall profiles and check recent results of Dvali and Shifman (Phys. Lett. B396, (1997) 64: (i) the BPS-saturated nature of the walls; (ii) the exact expressions for the wall energy density which depend only on global features of dynamics (the existence of a non-trivial central extension of N=1 superalgebra in the theories which admit wall-like solutions). If supersymmetry is softly broken by the gluino mass, the degeneracy of the distinct vacua is gone, and one can consider the decay rate of the "false" vacuum into the genuine one. We do this calculation in the limit of the small gluino mass. Finally, we comment on the controversy regarding the existence of $N$ distinct chirally asymmetric vacua in SU(N) SUSY gluodynamics.

Chirally Symmetric Phase of Supersymmetric Gluodynamics

We argue that supersymmetric gluodynamics (theory of gluons and gluinos) has a condensate-free phase. Unlike the standard phase, the discrete axial symmetry of the Lagrangian is unbroken in this phase, and the gluino condensate does not develop. Extra unconventional vacua are supersymmetric and are characterized by the presence of (bosonic and fermionic) massless bound states. A set of arguments in favor of the conjecture includes: (i) analysis of the effective Lagrangian of the Veneziano-Yankielowicz type which we amend to properly incorporate all symmetries of the model; (ii) consideration of an unsolved problem with the Witten index; (iii) interpretation of a mismatch between the strong-coupling and weak coupling instanton calculations of the gluino condensate detected previously. Impact on Seiberg's results is briefly discussed.

Quantum evolution of the disoriented chiral condensates

We study the dynamics of the chiral phase transition expected during the expansion of the quark-gluon plasma produced in a high energy hadron or heavy ion collision, using the $O(4)$ linear sigma model in the mean field approximation. Imposing boost invariant initial conditions at an initial proper time $τ_0$ and starting from an approximate equilibrium configuration, we investigate the possibility of formation of disoriented chiral condensate during the expansion. In order to create large domains of disoriented chiral condensates low-momentum instabilities have to last for long enough periods of time. Our simulations show no instabilities for an initial thermal configuration. For some of the out-of-equilibrium initial states studied, the fluctuation in the number of particles with low transverse momenta become large at late proper times.

Fermionic Operators from Bosonic Fields in 3+1 Dimensions

We present a construction of fermionic operators in 3+1 dimensions in terms of bosonic fields in the framework of $QED_4$. The basic bosonic variables are the electric fields $E_i$ and their conjugate momenta $A_i$. Our construction generalizes the analogous constuction of fermionic operators in 2+1 dimensions. Loosely speaking, a fermionic operator is represented as a product of an operator that creates a pointlike charge and an operator that creates an infinitesimal t'Hooft loop of half integer strength. We also show how the axial $U(1)$ transformations are realized in this construction.
