Measurement of Topological Berry Phase in Highly Disordered Graphene

We have observed the quantum Hall effect (QHE) and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in highly disordered graphene at magnetic fields up to 65 T. Disorder was introduced by hydrogenation of graphene up to a ratio H/C $\approx 0.1\%$. The analysis of SdH oscillations and QHE indicates that the topological part of the Berry phase, proportional to the pseudo-spin winding number, is robust against introduction of disorder by hydrogenation in large scale graphene.

Resonant wavepackets and shock waves in an atomtronic SQUID

The fundamental dynamics of ultracold atomtronic devices are reflected in their phonon modes of excitation. We probe such a spectrum by applying a harmonically driven potential barrier to a $^{23}$Na Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring-shaped trap. This perturbation excites phonon wavepackets. When excited resonantly, these wavepackets display a regular periodic structure. The resonant frequencies depend upon the particular configuration of the barrier, but are commensurate with the orbital frequency of a Bogoliubov sound wave traveling around the ring. Energy transfer to the condensate over many cycles of the periodic wavepacket motion causes enhanced atom loss from the trap at resonant frequencies. Solutions of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation exhibit quantitative agreement with the experimental data. We also observe the generation of supersonic shock waves under conditions of strong excitation, and collisions of two shock wavepackets.

Mott Transition for Strongly-Interacting 1D Bosons in a Shallow Periodic Potential

We investigate the superfluid-insulator transition of one-dimensional interacting Bosons in both deep and shallow periodic potentials. We compare a theoretical analysis based on Monte-Carlo simulations in continuum space and Luttinger liquid approach with experiments on ultracold atoms with tunable interactions and optical lattice depth. Experiments and theory are in excellent agreement. It provides a quantitative determination of the critical parameter for the Mott transition and defines the regime of validity of widely used approximate models, namely the Bose-Hubbard and sine-Gordon models

Neumann boundary value problem in domains of the Heisenberg Group $\mathbb H_n$

Existence and uniqueness of the solution of the Neumann problem for the Kohn-Laplacian on the Korányi ball of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_n$ are discussed. Explicit representations of Green's type function (Neumann function) for the half space and Korányi ball in $\mathbb{H}_n$ for circular functions have been obtained. These functions are then used on above regions in $\mathbb{H}_n$ to solve the inhomogeneous Neumann boundary value problem for circular data.

Correlation spectroscopy in cold atoms: light sidebands resonances in electromagnetically induced transparency condition

The correlation spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the measurement of the intrinsic linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in time and frequency domain. We study the role of the sidebands of the intense fields in the measured spectra, analyzing the information that can be recovered working with different analysis frequencies. In this case, the non-zero one-photon detuning appears as a necessary condition for spectrally resolving the sideband resonances in the correlation coefficient. Our experimental findings are supported by the perturbative model defined in the frequency domain.

A Simple, Versatile Laser System for the Creation of Ultracold Ground State Molecules

A narrow-linewidth, dual-wavelength laser system is vital for the creation of ultracold ground state molecules via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) from a weakly bound Feshbach state. Here we describe how a relatively simple apparatus consisting of a single fixed-length optical cavity can be used to narrow the linewidth of the two different wavelength lasers required for STIRAP simultaneously. The frequency of each of these lasers is referenced to the cavity and is continuously tunable away from the cavity modes through the use of non-resonant electrooptic modulators. Self-heterodyne measurements suggest the laser linewidths are reduced to several hundred Hz. In the context of 87Rb133Cs molecules produced via magnetoassociation on a Feshbach resonance, we demonstrate the performance of the laser system through one- and two-photon molecular spectroscopy. Finally, we demonstrate transfer of the molecules to the rovibrational ground state using STIRAP.

Performance of a Large-Area GEM Detector Prototype for the Upgrade of the CMS Muon Endcap System

Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology is being considered for the forward muon upgrade of the CMS experiment in Phase 2 of the CERN LHC. Its first implementation is planned for the GE1/1 system in the $1.5 < \midη\mid < 2.2$ region of the muon endcap mainly to control muon level-1 trigger rates after the second long LHC shutdown. A GE1/1 triple-GEM detector is read out by 3,072 radial strips with 455 $μ$rad pitch arranged in eight $η$-sectors. We assembled a full-size GE1/1 prototype of 1m length at Florida Tech and tested it in 20-120 GeV hadron beams at Fermilab using Ar/CO$_{2}$ 70:30 and the RD51 scalable readout system. Four small GEM detectors with 2-D readout and an average measured azimuthal resolution of 36 $μ$rad provided precise reference tracks. Construction of this largest GEM detector built to-date is described. Strip cluster parameters, detection efficiency, and spatial resolution are studied with position and high voltage scans. The plateau detection efficiency is [97.1 $\pm$ 0.2 (stat)]\%. The azimuthal resolution is found to be [123.5 $\pm$ 1.6 (stat)] $μ$rad when operating in the center of the efficiency plateau and using full pulse height information. The resolution can be slightly improved by $\sim$ 10 $μ$rad when correcting for the bias due to discrete readout strips. The CMS upgrade design calls for readout electronics with binary hit output. When strip clusters are formed correspondingly without charge-weighting and with fixed hit thresholds, a position resolution of [136.8 $\pm$ 2.5 stat] $μ$rad is measured, consistent with the expected resolution of strip-pitch/$\sqrt{12}$ = 131.3 $μ$rad. Other $η$-sectors of the detector show similar response and performance.

Thermally induced subgap features in the cotunneling spectroscopy of a carbon nanotube

We report on nonlinear cotunneling spectroscopy of a carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to Nb superconducting contacts. Our measurements show rich subgap features in the stability diagram which become more pronounced as the temperature is increased. Applying a transport theory based on the Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix, we show that the transport properties can be attributed to processes involving sequential as well as elastic and inelastic cotunneling of quasiparticles thermally excited across the gap. In particular, we predict thermal replicas of the elastic and inelastic cotunneling peaks, in agreement with our experimental results.

Inverse Tempered Stable Subordinators

We consider the first-hitting time of a tempered $β$-stable subordinator, also called inverse tempered stable (ITS) subordinator. The density function of the ITS subordinator is obtained, for the index of stability $β\in (0,1)$. The series representation of the ITS density is also obtained, which could be helpful for computational purposes. The asymptotic behaviors of the $q$-th order moments of the ITS subordinator are investigated. In particular, the limiting behaviors of the mean of the ITS subordinator is given. The limiting form of the ITS density, as the space variable $x\rightarrow 0$, and its $k$-th order derivatives are obtained. The governing PDE for the ITS density is also obtained. The corresponding known results for inverse stable subordinator follow as special cases.

Interferometric measurement of the current-phase relationship of a superfluid weak link

Weak connections between superconductors or superfluids can differ from classical links due to quantum coherence, which allows flow without resistance. Transport properties through such weak links can be described with a single function, the current-phase relationship, which serves as the quantum analog of the current-voltage relationship. Here, we present a technique for inteferometrically measuring the current-phase relationship of superfluid weak links. We interferometrically measure the phase gradient around a ring-shaped superfluid Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) containing a rotating weak link, allowing us to identify the current flowing around the ring. While our BEC weak link operates in the hydrodynamic regime, this technique can be extended to all types of weak links (including tunnel junctions) in any phase-coherent quantum gas. Moreover, it can also measure the current-phase relationships of excitations. Such measurements may open new avenues of research in quantum transport.

Chemical Pressure effect at the boundary of Mott insulator and itinerant electron limit of Spinel Vanadates

The chemical pressure effect on the structural, transport, magnetic and electronic properties (by measuring X-ray photoemission spectroscopy) of ZnV2O4 has been investigated by doping Mn and Co on the Zinc site of ZnV2O4. With Mn doping the V-V distance increases and with Co doping it decreases. The resistivity and thermoelectric power data indicate that as the V-V distance decreases the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. The transport data also indicate that the conduction is due to the small polaron hopping. The chemical pressure shows the non-monotonous behaviour of charge gap and activation energy. The XPS study also supports the observation that with decrease of the V-V separation the system moves towards Quantum Phase Transition. On the other hand when Ti is doped on the V-site of ZnV2O4 the metal-metal distance decreases and at the same time the TN also increases.

Effect of Zn doping on the Magneto-Caloric effect and Critical Constants of Mott Insulator MnV2O4

X-ray absorption near edge spectra (XANES) and magnetization of Zn doped MnV2O4 have been measured and from the magnetic measurement the critical exponents and magnetocaloric effect have been estimated. The XANES study indicates that Zn doping does not change the valence states in Mn and V. It has been shown that the obtained values of critical exponents \b{eta}, γ and δ do not belong to universal class and the values are in between the 3D Heisenberg model and the mean field interaction model. The magnetization data follow the scaling equation and collapse into two branches indicating that the calculated critical exponents and critical temperature are unambiguous and intrinsic to the system. All the samples show large magneto-caloric effect. The second peak in magneto-caloric curve of Mn0.95Zn0.05V2O4 is due to the strong coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom. But 10% Zn doping reduces the residual spins on the V-V pairs resulting the decrease of coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom.

Testbeam and Laboratory Characterization of CMS 3D Pixel Sensors

The pixel detector is the innermost tracking device in CMS, reconstructing interaction vertices and charged particle trajectories. The sensors located in the innermost layers of the pixel detector must be upgraded for the ten-fold increase in luminosity expected with the High- Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) phase. As a possible replacement for planar sensors, 3D silicon technology is under consideration due to its good performance after high radiation fluence. In this paper, we report on pre- and post- irradiation measurements for CMS 3D pixel sensors with different electrode configurations. The effects of irradiation on electrical properties, charge collection efficiency, and position resolution of 3D sensors are discussed. Measurements of various test structures for monitoring the fabrication process and studying the bulk and surface properties, such as MOS capacitors, planar and gate-controlled diodes are also presented.

Nano tracks in fullerene film by dense electronic excitations

In the present work, we investigate the formation of nano tracks by cluster and mono-atomic ion beams in the fullerene (C60) thin films by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The fullerene films on carbon coated grids were irradiated by 30 MeV C60 cluster beam and 120 MeV Au mono-atomic beams at normal and grazing angle to the incident ion beams. The studies show that the cluster beam creates latent tracks of an average diameter of around 20 nm. The formation of large size nano tracks by cluster beam is attributed to the deposition of large electronic energy density as compared to mono-atomic beams.

Field emission characteristics of carbon nanotubes according to the high energy ion irradiation

The field emission properties of ion irradiated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and doublewalled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) have been studied. The carbon nanotubes synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method were irradiated by high energy (90 MeV) Au ions with different ion fluence from 4x1011 to 1x1013 ions/cm2 . After ion irradiation, the field emission properties of MWCNTs and DWCNTs were greatly influenced. The change in the emission characteristics is due to structural defects caused by the high energy ion irradiation. The emission characteristic of MWCNTs was improved and turn-on field decreased from 5.43 to 3.10 V/m by ion irradiation. Noticeable improvement in emission characteristics of MWCNTs was observed at a fluence of 1x 10 13 ions/cm2. The emission characteristics of DWCNTs deteriorated and the turn-on field was increased from 2.44 to 7.76 V/m. This results show the distinctly different behavior of ion irradiated MWCNTs and DWCNTs.

Measurement of Charged Pion Production Yields off the NuMI Target

The fixed-target MIPP experiment, Fermilab E907, was designed to measure the production of hadrons from the collisions of hadrons of momenta ranging from 5 to 120 GeV/c on a variety of nuclei. These data will generally improve the simulation of particle detectors and predictions of particle beam fluxes at accelerators. The spectrometer momentum resolution is between 3 and 4%, and particle identification is performed for particles ranging between 0.3 and 80 GeV/c using $dE/dx$, time-of-flight and Cherenkov radiation measurements. MIPP collected $1.42 \times10^6$ events of 120 GeV Main Injector protons striking a target used in the NuMI facility at Fermilab. The data have been analyzed and we present here charged pion yields per proton-on-target determined in bins of longitudinal and transverse momentum between 0.5 and 80 GeV/c, with combined statistical and systematic relative uncertainties between 5 and 10%.

Temperature dependence of Andreev spectra in a superconducting carbon nanotube quantum dot

Tunneling spectroscopy of a Nb coupled carbon nanotube quantum dot reveals the formation of pairs of Andreev bound states (ABS) within the superconducting gap. A weak replica of the lower ABS is found, which is generated by quasi-particle tunnelling from the ABS to the Al tunnel probe. An inversion of the ABS-dispersion is observed at elevated temperatures, which signals the thermal occupation of the upper ABS. Our experimental findings are well supported by model calculations based on the superconducting Anderson model.

Magnetic and Structural properties of $MnV_{2}O_{4}$

Magnetization, neutron diffraction and X-ray diffraction of Zn doped MnV2O4 as a function of temperature have been measured and the critical exponents and magnetocaloric effect of this system have been estimated. It is observed, that with increase in Zn substitution the noncollinear orientation of Mn spins with the V spins decreases which effectively leads to the decrease of structural transition temperature more rapidly than Curie temperature. It has been shown that the obtained values of β, γ and δ from different methods match very well. These values do not belong to universal class and the values are in between the 3D Heisenberg model and mean field interaction model. The magnetization data follow the scaling equation and collapse into two branches indicating that the calculated critical exponents and critical temperature are unambiguous and intrinsic to the system. The observed double peaks in magneto-caloric curve of Mn0.95Zn0.05V2O4 is due to the strong distortion of VO6 octahedra.
