Phase separation of binary fluids with dynamic temperature

Phase separation of binary fluids quenched by contact with cold external walls is considered. Navier-Stokes, convection-diffusion, and energy equations are solved by lattice Boltzmann method coupled with finite-difference schemes. At high viscosity, different morphologies are observed by varying the thermal diffusivity. In the range of thermal diffusivities with domains growing parallel to the walls, temperature and phase separation fronts propagate towards the inner of the system with power-law behavior. At low viscosity hydrodynamics favors rounded shapes, and complex patterns with different lengthscales appear. Off-symmetrical systems behave similarly but with more ordered configurations.

Hybrid lattice Boltzmann model for binary fluid mixtures

A hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for binary mixtures based on the free-energy approach is proposed. Non-ideal terms of the pressure tensor are included as a body force in the LBM kinetic equations, used to simulate the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations. The convection-diffusion equation is studied by finite difference methods. Differential operators are discretized in order to reduce the magnitude of spurious velocities. The algorithm has been shown to be stable and reproducing the correct equilibrium behavior in simple test configurations and to be Galilean invariant. Spurious velocities can be reduced of about an order of magnitude with respect to standard discretization procedure.

Capillary filling using Lattice Boltzmann Equations: the case of multi-phase flows

We present a systematic study of capillary filling for multi-phase flows by using mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann models describing a diffusive interface moving at a given contact angle with respect to the walls. We compare the numerical results at changing the density ratio between liquid and gas phases and the ratio between the typical size of the capillary and the interface width. It is shown that numerical results yield quantitative agreement with the Washburn law when both ratios are large, i.e. as the hydrodynamic limit of a infinitely thin interface is approached. We also show that in the initial stage of the filling process, transient behaviour induced by inertial effects and ``vena contracta'' mechanisms, may induce significant departure from the Washburn law. Both effects are under control in our lattice Boltzmann equation and in good agreement with the phenomenology of capillary filling.

A lattice mesoscopic model of dynamically heterogeneous fluids

We introduce a mesoscopic three-dimensional Lattice Boltzmann Model which attempts to mimick the physical features associated with cage effects in dynamically heterogeneous fluids. To this purpose, we extend the standard Lattice Boltzmann dynamics with self-consistent constraints based on the non-local density of the surrounding fluid. The resulting dynamics exhibits typical features of dynamic heterogeneous fluids, such as non-Gaussian density distributions and long-time relaxation. Due to its intrinsically parallel dynamics, and absence of statistical noise, the method is expected to compute significantly faster than molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo and lattice glass models.

Morphologies and flow patterns in quenching of lamellar systems with shear

We study the behavior of a fluid quenched from the disordered into the lamellar phase under the action of a shear flow. The dynamics of the system is described by Navier-Stokes and convection-diffusion equations with pressure tensor and chemical potential derived by the Brazovskii free-energy. Our simulations are based on a mixed numerical method with Lattice Boltzmann equation and finite difference scheme for Navier-Stokes and order parameter equations, respectively. We focus on cases where banded flows are observed with two different slopes for the component of velocity in the direction of the applied flow. Close to the walls the system reaches a lamellar order with very few defects and the slope of the horizontal velocity is higher than the imposed shear rate. In the middle of the system the local shear rate is lower than the imposed one and the system looks as a mixture of tilted lamellae, droplets and small elongated domains. We refer to this as to a region with a Shear Induced Structures (SIS) configuration. The local behavior of the stress shows that the system with the coexisting lamellar and SIS regions is in mechanical equilibrium. This phenomenon occurs, at fixed viscosity, for shear rates under a certain threshold; when the imposed shear rate is sufficiently large, lamellar order develops in the whole system. Effects of different viscosities have been also considered: The SIS region is observed only at low enough viscosity. We compare the above scenario with the usual one of shear banding. In particular, we do not find evidence for a plateau of the stress at varying imposed shear rates in the region with banded flow. We interpret our results as due to a tendency of the lamellar system to oppose to the presence of the applied flow.

Model independent pre-processing of X-ray powder diffraction profiles

Precise knowledge of X-ray diffraction profile shape is crucial in the investigation of the properties of matter in crystals powder. Line-broadening analysis is a pre-processing step in most of the full powder pattern fitting softwares. Final result of line-broadening analysis strongly depends on preliminary three steps: Noise filtering, removal of background signal and peak fitting. In this work a new model independent procedure for two of the aforementioned steps (background suppression and peak fitting) is presented. The former is dealt with by using morphological mathematics, while the latter relies on the Hankel Lanczos Singular Value Decomposition technique. Real X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) intensity profiles of Ceria samples are used to test the performance of the proposed procedure. Results show the robustness of this approach and its capability of efficiently improving the disentangling of instrumental broadening. These features make the proposed approach an interesting and user-friendly tool for the pre-processing of XRPD data.

Application of the HLSVD technique to the filtering of X-ray diffraction data

A filter based on the Hankel Lanczos Singular Value Decomposition (HLSVD) technique is presented and applied for the first time to X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Synthetic and real powder XRD intensity profiles of nanocrystals are used to study the filter performances with different noise levels. Results show the robustness of the HLSVD filter and its capability to extract easily and efficiently the useful crystallographic information. These characteristics make the filter an interesting and user-friendly tool for processing XRD data.

Scaling and hydrodynamic effects in lamellar ordering

We study the kinetics of domain growth of fluid mixtures quenched from a disordered to a lamellar phase. At low viscosities, in two dimensions, when hydrodynamic modes become important, dynamical scaling is verified in the form $C(\vec k, t) \sim L^α f[(k-k_M)L]$ where $C$ is the structure factor with maximum at $k_M$ and $L$ is a typical length changing from power law to logarithmic growth at late times. The presence of extended defects can explain the behavior of $L$. Three-dimensional simulations confirm that diffuse grain boundaries inhibit complete ordering of lamellae. Applied shear flow alleviates frustration and gives power-law growth at all times.

Finite difference lattice Boltzmann model with flux limiters for liquid-vapor systems

In this paper we apply a finite difference lattice Boltzmann model to study the phase separation in a two-dimensional liquid-vapor system. Spurious numerical effects in macroscopic equations are discussed and an appropriate numerical scheme involving flux limiter techniques is proposed to minimize them and guarantee a better numerical stability at very low viscosity. The phase separation kinetics is investigated and we find evidence of two different growth regimes depending on the value of the fluid viscosity as well as on the liquid-vapor ratio.

Helical polymer in cylindrical confining geometries

Using an algorithm for simulating equilibrium configurations, we study a fluctuating helical polymer either (i) contained in a cylindrical pore or (ii) wound around a cylindrical rod. We work in the regime where both the contour length and the persistence length of the helical polymer are much larger than the diameter of the cylinder. In case (i) we calculate the free energy of confinement and interpret it in terms of a worm-like chain in a pore with an effective diameter that depends on the parameters of the helix. In case (ii) we consider the possibility that one end of the helical polymer escapes from the rod and wanders away. The average numbers of turns at which the helix escapes or intersects the rod are measured in the simulations, as a function of the pitch $p_0$. The behavior for large and small $p_0$ is explained with simple scaling arguments.

Lattice Boltzmann model with hierarchical interactions

We present a numerical study of the dynamics of a non-ideal fluid subject to a density-dependent pseudo-potential characterized by a hierarchy of nested attractive and repulsive interactions. It is shown that above a critical threshold of the interaction strength, the competition between stable and unstable regions results in a short-ranged disordered fluid pattern with sharp density contrasts. These disordered configurations contrast with phase-separation scenarios typically observed in binary fluids. The present results indicate that frustration can be modelled within the framework of a suitable one-body effective Boltzmann equation. The lattice implementation of such an effective Boltzmann equation may be seen as a preliminary step towards the development of complementary/alternative approaches to truly atomistic methods for the computational study of glassy dynamics.

A lattice Boltzmann model with random dynamical constraints

In this paper we introduce a modified lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) with the capability of mimicking a fluid system with dynamic heterogeneities. The physical system is modeled as a one-dimensional fluid, interacting with finite-lifetime moving obstacles. Fluid motion is described by a lattice Boltzmann equation and obstacles are randomly distributed semi-permeable barriers which constrain the motion of the fluid particles. After a lifetime delay, obstacles move to new random positions. It is found that the non-linearly coupled dynamics of the fluid and obstacles produces heterogeneous patterns in fluid density and non-exponential relaxation of two-time autocorrelation function.

Phase separation of incompressible binary fluids with Lattice Boltzmann Methods

We introduce new versions of lattice Boltzmann methods (LBM) for incompressible binary mixtures where fluctuations of total density are inhibited. As a test for the improved algorithms we consider the problem of phase separation of two-dimensional binary mixtures quenched from a disordered state into the coexistence region. We find that the stability properties of LBM are greatly improved. The control of density fluctuations and the possibility of running longer simulations allow a more precise evaluation of the growth exponent.

Phase separating binary fluids under oscillatory shear

We apply lattice Boltzmann methods to study the segregation of binary fluid mixtures under oscillatory shear flow in two dimensions. The algorithm allows to simulate systems whose dynamics is described by the Navier-Stokes and the convection-diffusion equations. The interplay between several time scales produces a rich and complex phenomenology. We investigate the effects of different oscillation frequencies and viscosities on the morphology of the phase separating domains. We find that at high frequencies the evolution is almost isotropic with growth exponents 2/3 and 1/3 in the inertial (low viscosity) and diffusive (high viscosity) regimes, respectively. When the period of the applied shear flow becomes of the same order of the relaxation time $T_R$ of the shear velocity profile, anisotropic effects are clearly observable. In correspondence with non-linear patterns for the velocity profiles, we find configurations where lamellar order close to the walls coexists with isotropic domains in the middle of the system. For particular values of frequency and viscosity it can also happen that the convective effects induced by the oscillations cause an interruption or a slowing of the segregation process, as found in some experiments. Finally, at very low frequencies, the morphology of domains is characterized by lamellar order everywhere in the system resembling what happens in the case with steady shear.

Computer simulations of domain growth in off-critical quenches of two-dimensional binary mixtures

The phase separation of two-dimensional binary mixtures has been studied through numerical Langevin simulations based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy. We have considered not symmetric mixtures with and without imposed shear flow. In the sheared case our main results are as follows: (1) domains are distorted by the flow; (2) the structure factor has four peaks; (3) excess viscosity shows a peak whose position is independent of shear rate but its height decreases increasing shear rate.

The segregation of sheared binary fluids in the Bray-Humayun model

The phase separation process which follows a sudden quench inside the coexistence region is considered for a binary fluid subjected to an applied shear flow. This issue is studied in the framework of the convection-diffusion equation based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional in the approximation scheme introduced by Bray and Humayun [{\it Phys.Rev.Lett.} {\bf 68}, 1559, (1992)]. After an early stage where domains form and shear effects become effective the system enters a scaling regime where the typical domains sizes $L_\parallel $, $L_\perp$ along the flow and perpendicular to it grow as $t^{5/4}$ and $t^{1/4}$. The structure factor is characterized by the existence of four peaks, similarly to previous theoretical and experimental observations, and by exponential tails at large wavevectors.

Ordering of the lamellar phase under a shear flow

The dynamics of a system quenched into a state with lamellar order and subject to an uniform shear flow is solved in the large-N limit. The description is based on the Brazovskii free-energy and the evolution follows a convection-diffusion equation. Lamellae order preferentially with the normal along the vorticity direction. Typical lengths grow as $γt^{5/4}$ (with logarithmic corrections) in the flow direction and logarithmically in the shear direction. Dynamical scaling holds in the two-dimensional case while it is violated in D=3.
