Quasinormal frequencies of a two-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole of the dilaton gravity theory

We numerically calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields propagating in a two-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole of the dilaton gravity theory. For the Klein-Gordon field we use the Horowitz-Hubeny method and the asymptotic iteration method for second order differential equations. For the Dirac field we first exploit the Horowitz-Hubeny method. As a second method, instead of using the asymptotic iteration method for second order differential equations, we propose to take as a basis its formulation for coupled systems of first order differential equations. For the two fields we find that the results that produce the two numerical methods are consistent. Furthermore for both fields we obtain that their quasinormal modes are stable and we compare their quasinormal frequencies to analyze whether their spectra are isospectral. Finally we discuss the main results.

Electromagnetic quasinormal modes of five-dimensional topological black holes

We calculate exactly the QNF of the vector type and scalar type electromagnetic fields propagating on a family of five-dimensional topological black holes. To get a discrete spectrum of quasinormal frequencies for the scalar type electromagnetic field we find that it is necessary to change the boundary condition usually imposed at the asymptotic region. Furthermore for the vector type electromagnetic field we impose the usual boundary condition at the asymptotic region and we discuss the existence of unstable quasinormal modes in the five-dimensional topological black holes.

BTZ quasinormal frequencies as poles of Green's function

Based on the well known fact that the quasinormal frequencies are the poles of the frequency domain Green's function we describe a method that allows us to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon field moving in the three-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole. These quasinormal frequencies are already published and widely explored in several applications, but we use this example to expound the proposed method of computation. We think that the described procedure can be useful to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of classical fields propagating in other backgrounds. Furthermore, we compare with previous results and discuss some related facts.

New conditionally exactly solvable potentials of exponential type

Based on a method that produces the solutions to the Schrodinger equations of partner potentials, we give two conditionally exactly solvable partner potentials of exponential type defined on the half line. These potentials are multiplicative shape invariant and each of their linearly independent solution includes a sum of two hypergeometric functions. Furthermore we calculate the scattering amplitudes and study some of their properties.

A conditionally exactly solvable generalization of the potential step

Motivated by the interest in non-relativistic quantum mechanics for determining exact solutions to the Schrodinger equation we give two potentials that are conditionally exactly solvable. The two potentials are partner potentials and we obtain that each linearly independent solution of the Schrodinger equation includes two hypergeometric functions. Furthermore we calculate their reflection and transmission amplitudes. Finally we discuss some additional properties of these potentials.

New conditionally exactly solvable inverse power law potentials

We give two conditionally exactly solvable inverse power law potentials whose linearly independent solutions include a sum of two confluent hypergeometric functions. We notice that they are partner potentials and multiplicative shape invariant. The method used to find the solutions works with the two Schrodinger equations of the partner potentials. Furthermore we study some of the properties of these potentials.

Late time behavior of the massive Dirac field in D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime

To extend previous results on the late time behavior of massive fields, for the Dirac field propagating in the D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime we calculate analytically its asymptotic tails. We find that the massive Dirac field has an oscillatory inverse power law tail. The frequency of the oscillations depends on the mass of the field and the power law decay rate depends on the dimension of the spacetime and the mode number of the angular eigenvalues. We also compare with previous results in curved spacetimes.

Quasinormal frequencies of the Dirac field in a D-dimensional Lifshitz black hole

In a D-dimensional Lifshitz black hole we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of a test Dirac field in the massless and zero angular eigenvalue limits. These results are an extension of the previous calculations in which the quasinormal frequencies of the Dirac field are determined, but in four dimensions. We discuss the four-dimensional limit of our expressions for the quasinormal frequencies and compare with the previous results. We also determine whether the Dirac field has unstable modes in the D-dimensional Lifshitz spacetime.

Electromagnetic quasinormal modes of an asymptotically Lifshitz black hole

Motivated by the recent interest in the study of the spacetimes that are asymptotically Lifshitz and in order to extend some previous results, we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the electromagnetic field in a D-dimensional asymptotically Lifshitz black hole. Based on the values obtained for the quasinormal frequencies we discuss the classical stability of the quasinormal modes. We also study whether the electromagnetic field possesses unstable modes in the D-dimensional Lifshitz spacetime.

Quasinormal modes of a two-dimensional black hole

For a two-dimensional black hole we determine the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields. In contrast to the well known examples whose spectrum of quasinormal frequencies is discrete, for this black hole we find a continuous spectrum of quasinormal frequencies, but there are unstable quasinormal modes. In the framework of the Hod and Maggiore proposals we also discuss the consequences of these results on the form of the entropy spectrum for the two-dimensional black hole.

Classical stability of black holes under massless Dirac perturbations

In a D-dimensional maximally symmetric spacetime we simplify the massless Dirac equation to two decoupled wavelike equations with effective potentials. Furthermore in D-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter black holes we note that for the massless Dirac field moving in the region exterior to the event horizon at least one of the effective potentials is not positive definite. Therefore the classical stability of these black holes against this field is not guaranteed. Here with the help of the S-deformation method, we state their classical stability against the massless Dirac field, extend these results to maximally symmetric black holes, and comment on the applicability of our results to establish the stability with respect to other classical fields.

On the quasinormal modes of the de Sitter spacetime

Modifying a method by Horowitz and Hubeny for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes, we establish the classical stability of the quasinormal modes of the de Sitter spacetime. Furthermore using a straightforward method we calculate the de Sitter quasinormal frequencies of the gravitational perturbations and discuss some properties of the radial functions of these quasinormal modes.

Quasinormal frequencies of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in two dimensions

We calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of Klein-Gordon and Dirac test fields propagating in two-dimensional uncharged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole. For both test fields we study whether the quasinormal frequencies are well defined in the massless limit. We use their values to discuss the classical stability of the quasinormal modes in uncharged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole and to check the recently proposed Time Times Temperature bound. Furthermore we extend some of these results to the charged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole.

Entropy spectra of single horizon black holes in two dimensions

The Hod conjecture proposes that the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies determine the entropy quantum of a black hole. Considering the Maggiore modification of this conjecture we calculate the entropy spectra of general, single horizon, asymptotically flat black holes in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. We also compute the entropy quanta of the two-dimensional Witten and AdS(2) black holes. Using the results for the entropy quanta of these two-dimensional black holes we discuss whether the produced values are generic. Finally we extend the results on the entropy spectra of other black holes.

Quasinormal frequencies of asymptotically flat two-dimensional black holes

We discuss whether the minimally coupled massless Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields have well defined quasinormal modes in single horizon, asymptotically flat two-dimensional black holes. To get the result we solve the equations of motion in the massless limit and we also calculate the effective potentials of Schrodinger type equations. Furthermore we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Dirac field propagating in the two-dimensional uncharged Witten black hole. We compare our results on its quasinormal frequencies with other already published.

Area spectrum of the d-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in the small charge limit

A conjecture by Hod states that for the black hole horizon the spacing of its area spectrum is determined by the asymptotic value of its quasinormal frequencies. Recently to overcome some difficulties, Maggiore proposes some changes to the original Hod's conjecture. Taking into account the modifications proposed by Maggiore we calculate the area spectrum of the d-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in the small charge limit.

Entropy spectrum of the D-dimensional massless topological black hole

There are exact solutions to Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant that represent black holes whose event horizons are manifolds of negative curvature, the so-called topological black holes. Among these solutions there is one, the massless topological black hole, whose mass is equal to zero. Hod proposes that in the semiclassical limit the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies determine the entropy spectrum of the black holes. Taking into account this proposal, we calculate the entropy spectrum of the massless topological black hole and we compare with the results on the entropy spectra of other topological black holes.

On the Time Times Temperature Bound

Recently Hod proposes a lower bound on the relaxation time of a perturbed thermodynamic system. For gravitational systems this bound transforms into a condition on the fundamental quasinormal frequency. We test the bound in some spacetimes whose quasinormal frequencies are calculated exactly, as the three-dimensional BTZ black hole, the D-dimensional de Sitter spacetime, and the D-dimensional Nariai spacetime. We find that for some of these spacetimes their fundamental quasinormal frequencies do not satisfy the bound proposed by Hod.
