Mobility and stochastic resonance in spatially inhomogeneous system

The mobility of an overdamped particle, in a periodic potential tilted by a constant external field and moving in a medium with periodic friction coefficient is examined. When the potential and the friction coefficient have the same periodicity but have a phase difference, the mobility shows many interesting features as a function of the applied force, the temperature, etc. The mobility shows stochastic resonance even for constant applied force, an issue of much recent interest. The mobility also exhibits a resonance like phenomenon as a function of the field strength and noise induced slowing down of the particle in an appropriate parameter regime.

Stochastic Resonance in Washboard Potentials

We study the mobility of an overdamped particle in a periodic potential tilted by a constant force. The mobility exhibits a stochastic resonance in inhomogeneous systems with space dependent friction coefficient. The result indicates that the presence of oscillating external field is not essential for the observability of stochastic resonance, at least in the inhomogenous medium.

Blocking of inter-subspace tunneling by intra subspace inelastic scattering

In recent years the notion of intrinsic decoherence and dephasing of a particle interacting with its environment is being investigated intensively. This has an important bearing on a plausible causal connection between incoherent c-axis resistivity and high-temperature superconductivity. In our work we study the tunnel supression and incoherent motion of a particle tunneling between two sites. The bosonic excitations of the environment are coupled to only one site inducing on-site spin flips. We show that this on-site spin flip scattering makes the tunnel motion incoherent. In the high-temperature limit incoherent rate or hopping rate has been calculated. We also briefly discuss the renormalization of the effective tunneling by environmental coupling at zero temperature following Wegner's renormalization group procedure.

Circulating and persistent currents induced by a current magnification and Aharonov-Casher phase

We considered the circulating current induced by the current magnification and the persistent current induced by Aharonov-Casher flux. The persistent currents have directional dependence on the direct current flow, but the circulating currents have no directional dependence. Hence in the equilibrium, only the persistent current can survives on the ring. For the charge current, the persistent charge current cancelled between spin up and down states, because of the time reversal symmetry of the Hamiltonian on the ring. So there are only circulating charge currents on the ring for electrons with unpolarized spin in the nonequilibrium. However, only the persistent spin currents contributes to the spin currents for electrons with unpolarized spin.

Effect of nonlinearity on the dynamics of a particle in dc field-induced systems

Dynamics of a particle in a perfect chain with one nonlinear impurity and in a perfect nonlinear chain under the action of dc field is studied numerically. The nonlinearity appears due to the coupling of the electronic motion to optical oscillators which are treated in adiabatic approximation. We study for both the low and high values of field strength. Three different range of nonlinearity is obtained where the dynamics is different. In low and intermediate range of nonlinearity, it reduces the localization. In fact in the intermediate range subdiffusive behavior in the perfect nonlinear chain is obtained for a long time. In all the cases a critical value of nonlinear strength exists where self-trapping transition takes place. This critical value depends on the system and the field strength. Beyond the self-trapping transition nonlinearity enhances the localization.

Directional dependence of spin currents induced by Aharonov-Casher phase

We have calculated the persistent spin current of an open ring induced by the Aharonov-Casher phase. For unpolarized electrons there exist no persistent charge currents, but persistent spin currents. We show that, in general, the magnitude of the persistent spin current in a ring depends on the direction of the direct current flow from one reservoir to another. The persistent spin current is modulated by the cosine function of the spin precession angle. The nonadiabatic Aharonov-Casher phase gives anomalous behaviors. The Aharonov-Anandan phase is determined by the solid angle of spin precession. When the nonadiabatic Aharonov-Anandan phase approaches a constant value with the increase of the electric field, the periodic behavior of the spin persistent current occurs in an adiabatic limit. In this limit the periodic behavior of the persistent spin current could be understood by the effective spin-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux.

C-axis resistivity and high Tc superconductivity

Recently we had proposed a mechanism for the normal-state C-axis resistivity of the high-T$_c$ layered cuprates that involved blocking of the single-particle tunneling between the weakly coupled planes by strong intra-planar electron-electron scattering. This gave a C-axis resistivity that tracks the ab-plane T-linear resistivity, as observed in the high-temperature limit. In this work this mechanism is examined further for its implication for the ground-state energy and superconductivity of the layered cuprates. It is now argued that, unlike the single-particle tunneling, the tunneling of a boson-like pair between the planes prepared in the BCS-type coherent trial state remains unblocked inasmuch as the latter is by construction an eigenstate of the pair annihilation operator. The resulting pair-delocalization along the C-axis offers energetically a comparative advantage to the paired-up trial state, and, thus stabilizes superconductivity. In this scheme the strongly correlated nature of the layered system enters only through the blocking effect, namely that a given electron is effectively repeatedly monitored (intra-planarly scattered) by the other electrons acting as an environment, on a time-scale shorter than the inter-planar tunneling time. Possible relationship to other inter-layer pairing mechanisms proposed by several workers in the field is also briefly discussed.

Study of transmission and reflection from a disordered lasing medium

A numerical study of the statistics of transmission ($t$) and reflection ($r$) of quasi-particles from a one-dimensional disordered lasing or amplifying medium is presented. The amplification is introduced via a uniform imaginary part in the site energies in the disordered segment of the single-band tight binding model. It is shown that $t$ is a non-self-averaging quantity. The cross-over length scale above which the amplification suppresses the transmittance is studied as a function of amplification strength. A new cross-over length scale is introduced in the regime of strong disorder and weak amplification. The stationary distribution of the backscattered reflection coefficient is shown to differ qualitatively from the earlier analytical results obtained within the random phase approximation.

Distribution of Wigner delay time from single channel disordered systems

We consider the scattering of an electron from a semi-infinite one-dimensional random medium. The random medium is characterized by force, $-\d V/\d L$ being the basic random variable. We obtain an analytical expression for the stationary delay time ($τ$) distribution $P_s(τ)$ within a random phase approximation. Our result agrees with earlier analytical expressions, where the random potential is taken to be of different kind, indicating universality of the delay time distribution, i.e., delay time distribution is independent of the nature of disorder.

Comparison between the two models of dephasing in mesoscopic systems

In mesoscopic systems to study the role of inelastic scattering on the phase coherent motion of electrons two phenomenological models have been proposed. In the first one, due to Büttiker, one adds a voltage probe into the system (or in the scattering matrix). The second model invokes the complex (or optical) potential in the system Hamiltonian. Studying a simple geometry of a metallic loop in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux, we show that the two probe conductance is symmetric in the reversal of the magnetic field in Büttiker's approach. Whereas the two probe conductance within the complex potential model is asymmetric in the magnetic flux reversal contrary to the expected behavior.

Wigner delay time from a random passive and active medium

We consider the scattering of electron by a one-dimensional random potential (both passive and active medium) and numerically obtain the probability distribution of Wigner delay time ($τ$). We show that in a passive medium our probability distribution agrees with the earlier analytical results based on random phase approximation. We have extended our study to the strong disorder limit, where random phase approximation breaks down. The delay time distribution exhibits the long time tail ($1/τ^2$) due to resonant states, which is independent of the nature of disorder indicating the universality of the tail of the delay time distribution. In the presence of coherent absorption (active medium) we show that the long time tail is suppressed exponentially due to the fact that the particles whose trajectories traverse long distances in the medium are absorbed and are unlikely to be reflected.

Wave propagation through a coherently amplifying random medium

We report a detailed and systematic numerical study of wave propagation through a coherently amplifying random one-dimensional medium. The coherent amplification is modeled by introducing a uniform imaginary part in the site energies of the disordered single-band tight binding Hamiltonian. Several distinct length scales (regimes), most of them new, are identified from the behavior of transmittance and reflectance as a function of the material parameters. We show that the transmittance is a non-self-averaging quantity with a well defined mean value. The stationary distribution of the super reflection differs qualitatively from the analytical results obtained within the random phase approximation in strong disorder and amplification regime. The study of the stationary distribution of the phase of the reflected wave reveals the reason for this discrepancy. The applicability of random phase approximation is discussed. We emphasize the dual role played by the lasing medium, as an amplifier as well as a reflector.

Conductance Quantization in a Periodically Modulated Quantum Channel: backscattering and mode mixing

It is known that the conductance of a quantum point contact is quantized in units of $2e^2/h$ and this quantization is destroyed by a non-adiabatic scatterer in the point contact, due to backscattering. Recently, it was shown [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 137 (1993)] that taking many non-adiabatic scatterers periodically in a quantum channel, the quantization can be recovered. We study this conductance quantization of a periodic system in the presence of a strong defect. A periodic arrangement of double-stubs give remarkable quantization of conductance. A periodic arrangement of double-constrictions also gives a very good quantization only when the separation between the constrictions is small. We conclude that conductance quantization of a periodically modulated channel is robust.

Some stochastic phenomena in a driven double-well system

We study the overdamped motion of a Brownian particle in a driven double-well system to understand various physical phenomena observed experimentally. These phenomena include hysteresis, stochastic resonance, and net unidirectional motion in a symmetric periodic system. We argue that the area of the hysteresis loop so defined is a good measure of synchronization (with respect to the applied field) of passages between the two wells. We find that stochastic resonance may be relevant even in case of large amplitude driving field due to a recently discovered phenomena of noise induced stability of unstable states. We try to find relation between some of these apparently different phenomena.

Asymmetric motion in a double-well under the action of zero-mean Gaussian white noise and periodic forcing

Residence times of a particle in both the wells of a double-well system, under the action of zero-mean Gaussian white noise and zero-averaged but temporally asymmetric periodic forcings, are recorded in a numerical simulation. The difference between the relative mean residence times in the two wells shows monotonic variation as a function of asymmetry in the periodic forcing and for a given asymmetry the difference becomes largest at an optimum value of the noise strength. Moreover, the passages from one well to the other become less synchronous at small noise strength as the asymmetry parameter (defined below) differs from zero, but at relatively larger noise strengths the passages become more synchronous with asymmetry in the field sweep. We propose that asymmetric periodic forcing (with zero mean) could provide a simple but sensible physical model for unidirectional motion in a symmetric periodic system aided by a symmetric Gaussian white noise.

Two-Well System under Large Amplitude Periodic Forcing: Stochastic Synchronization, Stochastic Resonance and Stability

We study the residence time distributions and explore the possibility of observing stochastic resonance and synchonization of passages in a two-well system driven by a periodic forcing of amplitude larger than a marginal value beyond which one of the two wells become unstable and diasppear. We define and calculate hysteresis loop in the system, the area of which measures the degree of synchronization between the residence time statistics and the input signal, as a function of input noise strength. We analyse the noise induced stability obtained in such a deterministically overall unstable system and within this context discuss the above two phenomena.

Stochastic resonance and nonlinear response in a dissipative quantum two-state system

We study the dynamics of a dissipative two-level, system driven by a monochromatic ac field, starting from the usual spin-boson Hamiltonian. The quantum Langevin equations for the spin variables are obtained. The amplitude of the coherent oscillations in the average position of the particle is studied in the high temperature limit. The system exhibits quantum stochastic resonance in qualitative agreement with earlier numerical results.

Relation between Stochastic Resonance and Synchronization of Passages in a Double-Well System

We calculate, numerically, the residence times (and their distribution) of a Brownian particle in a two-well system under the action of a periodic, saw-tooth type, external field. We define hysteresis in the system. The hysteresis loop area is shown to be a good measure of synchronization of passages from one well to the other. We establish connection between this stochastic synchronization and stochastic resonance in the system.
