Normal state c-axis resistivity of high T_c cuprate superconductors

It is shown that a strong intraplanar incoherent scattering can effectively block the interplanar coherent tunneling between the weakly coupled planes of the highly anisotropic but clean (intrinsic) materials such as the optimally doped high-T_c layered cuprate superconductors. The calculated normal-state C-axis resistivity ρ_c(T) then follows the metal-like temperature dependence of the ab-plane resistivity ρ_{ab}(T) at high temperatures. At low enough temperatures, however, ρ_c(T) exhibits a non-metal like upturn even as ρ_{ab}(T) remains metallic. Moreover, in the metallic regime, ρ_c(T) is not limited by the maximum metallic resistivity of Mott-Ioffe-Regel. This correlation between the intrinsic ρ_c(T) and ρ_{ab}(T) is observed in the normal state of the high-T_c stoichiometric cuprates.

Statistics of Mesoscopic Fluctuations of Quantum Capacitance

The Thouless formula \(G = (e^2/h)(E_c/Δ)\) for the two-probe dc conductance $G$ of a d-dimensional mesoscopic cube is re-analysed to relate its quantum capacitance $C_Q$ to the reciprocal of the level spacing $Δ$. To this end, the escape time-scale $τ$ occurring in the Thouless correlation energy \(E_c = \hbar/τ\) is interpreted as the {\em time constant} \(τ= RC_Q\) with $RG \equiv$ 1, giving at once \(C_Q = (e^2/2πΔ)\). Thus, the statistics of the quantum capacitance is directly related to that of the level spacing, which is well known from the Random Matrix Theory for all the three universality classes of statistical ensembles. The basic questions of how intrinsic this quantum capacitance can arise purely quantum-resistively, and of its observability {\em vis-a-vis} the external geometric capacitance that combines with it in series, are discussed.

Phase of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in conductance of mesoscopic systems

Motivated by a recent experiment we analyze in detail the phase of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations across a 1D ring with a stub coupled to one of its arms, in the presence of a magnetic flux. We demonstrate that there are two kinds of conductance extremas. One class of them are fixed at particular flux values and can only change abruptly from a maxima to a minima as incident energy is varied. We show a different mechanism for such abrupt phase change in conductance oscillation. We demonstrate that these extremas can exhibit $``$phase locking". However, the second kind of extremas can shift continuously as the incident energy is varied.

Enslaving random fluctuations in nonequlibrium systems

Several physical models have recently been proposed to obtain unidirectional motion of an overdamped Brownian particle in a periodic potential system. The asymmetric ratchetlike form of the periodic potential and the presence of correlated nonequilibrium fluctuating forces are considered essential to obtain such a macroscopic motion in homogeneous systems. In the present work, instead, inhomogeneous systems are considered, wherein the friction coefficient and/or temperature could vary in space. We show that unidirectional motion can be obtained even in a symmetric nonratchetlike periodic potential system in the presence of white noise fluctuations. We consider four different cases of system inhomogeneity We argue that all these different models work under the same basic principle of alteration of relative stability of otherwise locally stable states in the presence of temperature inhomogeneity.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in the presence of evanescent modes

It is known that differential magnetoconductance of a normal metal loop connected to reservoirs by ideal wires is always negative when an electron travels as an evanescent modes in the loop. This is in contrast to the fact that the magnetoconductance for propagating modes is very sensitive to small changes in geometric details and the Fermi energy and moreover it can be positive as well as negative. Here we explore the role of impurities in the leads in determining the magnetoconductance of the loop. We find that the change in magnetoconductance is negative and can be made large provided the impurities do not create resonant states in the systems. This theoretical finding may play an useful role in quantum switch operations.

Persistent currents in coupled mesoscopic rings

We have analysed the nature of persistent currents in open coupled mesoscopic rings. Our system is comprised of two ideal loops connected to an electron reservoir. We have obtained analytical expressions for the persistent current densities in two rings in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that the known even-odd parity effects in isolated single loops have to be generalised for the case of coupled rings. We also show that when the two rings have unequal circumferences, it is possible to observe opposite currents (diamagnetic or paramagnetic) in the two rings for a given Fermi level.

Synchronized First-Passages in a Double-Well System

We perform Langevin dynamic numerical simulation on a double-well potential system subjected to an asymmetric saw-tooth type external time varying field and white noise forces. The hysteresis loss calculated from the first-passage time distribution obtained shows asymmetric behaviour with respect to the asymmetry in the field sweep. The hysteresis loss, in our model, being a measure of the synchronized passages from one well to the other, indicates asymmetric "correlated" passages in the two opposing directions when driven by a temporally asymmetric external field in the presence of white noise (fluctuating) forces. The implication of our results on the phenomena of predominantly unidirectional motion of a Brownian particle in a symmetric periodic (nonratchet-like) potential is discussed.

Macroscopic Equation of Motion in Inhomogeneous media

The dynamical evolution of a Brownian particle in an inhomogeneous medium with spatially varying friction and temperature field is important to understand conceptually. It requires to address the basic problem of relative stability of states in nonequilibrium systems which has been a subject of debate for over several decades. The theoretical treatments adopted so far are mostly phenomenological in nature. In this work we give a microscopic treatment of this problem. We derive the Langevin equation of motion and the associated Fokker-Planck equation. The correct reduced description of the Kramers equation in the overdamped limit (Smoluchowski equation) is obtained. Our microscopic treatment may be helpful in understanding the working of thermal ratchets, a problem of much current interest.

A simple model for Maxwell's demon type information engine

We have investigated the recently proposed self-consistent theory of fluctuation - induced transport. In this framework the subsystem under study is coupled to two independent baths at different temperatures. In this non-equilibrium system one can extract energy at the expense of increased entropy. This is a simple model of Maxwell's demon engine that extracts work out of a non-equilibrium bath by rectifying internal fluctuations. We point out the errors in the earlier results. We have obtained an analytical expression for the fluctuation - induced transport current in a non-equilibrium state and various cases of physical interest have been elucidated.

Effect of impurity on current magnification property of mesoscopic open rings

We have considered an open system consisting of a metallic ring coupled to two electron reservoirs. We have recently shown that in the presence of a transport current, circulating currents can flow in such a ring even in the absence of magnetic field. This is related to the current magnification effect in the ring. In our present work we have studied the effect of impurity on the current magnification. We find that the presence of impurity can enhance the current magnification in the loop significantly and thus lead to large circulating currents in certain range of Fermi energies. This is in contrast to the known fact that impurities can only decrease the persistent currents in a closed ring in the presence of magnetic flux.

Ground state properties of dissipative two state system coupled to phonons

We present a systematic analysis of ground state properties of a tunneling system coupled to an Ohmic bath. The nonadiabatic effects induced by coupling with tunneling particle , on the ground state properties of phonons are taken into account. For this we have considered both displacement and deformation of phonons via a variational treatment. The symmetry breaking transition , or the delocalization-localization transition of tunneling particle is presented and is compared with earlier known results. We also show that in the critical regime a gap will be opened near the zero momentum in the spectrum of the phonons. The modified phonon spectrum along with the phonon displacement field correlation functions have been calculated. It is shown that in the critical regime the tunneling system stabilizes the lattice against long wavelength fluctuations.

CURRENT MAGNIFICATION AND CIRCULATING CURRENTS IN MESOSCOPIC RINGS

We show that several novel effects related to persistent currents can arise in open systems, which have no analogue in closed or isolated systems. We have considered a system of a metallic ring coupled to two electron reservoirs. We show that in the presence of a transport current, persistent currents can flow in a ring even in the absence of magnetic field. This is related to the current magnification effect in the ring. In the presence of magnetic field we show that the amplitude of persistent currents is sensitive to the direction of current flow from one reservoir to another. Finally we briefly discuss the persistent currents arising due to two nonclassical effects namely, Aharonov-Bohm effect and quantum tunneling.

Persistent Currents in the Presence of a Transport Current

We have considered a system of a metallic ring coupled to two electron reservoirs. We show that in the presence of a transport current, the persistent current can flow in a ring, even in the absence of magnetic field. This is purely a quantum effect and is related to the current magnification in the loop. These persistent currents can be observed if one tunes the Fermi energy near the antiresonances of the total transmission coefficient or the two port conductance.

Quantum Waveguide Transport in Serial Stub and Loop Structures

We have studied the quantum transmission properties of serial stub and loop structures. Throughout we have considered free electron networks and the scattering arises solely due to the geometric nature of the problem. The band formation in these geometric structures is analyzed and compared with the conventional periodic potential scatterers. Some essential differences are pointed out. We show that a single defect in an otherwise periodic structure modifies band properties non trivially. By a proper choice of a single defect one can produce positive energy bound states in continuum in the sense of von Neumann and Wigner. We also discuss some magnetic properties of loop structures in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux.
