The $S_3$ flavour symmetry: Neutrino masses and mixings

We discuss the neutrino masses and mixings as the realization of an $S_{3}$ flavour permutational symmetry in two models, namely the Standard Model and an extension of the Standard Model with three Higgs doublets. In the $S_3$ Standard Model, mass matrices of the same generic form are obtained for the neutrinos and charged leptons when the $S_{3}$ flavour symmetry is broken sequentially. In the minimal $S_{3}$-symmetric extension of the Standard Model, the $S_3$ symmetry is left unbroken, and the concept of flavour is extended to the Higgs sector by introducing in the theory three Higgs fields which are SU(2) doublets. In both models, the mass matrices of the neutrino and charged leptons are reparametrized in terms of their eigenvalues, and exact, explicit analytical expressions for the neutrino mixing angles as functions of the masses of neutrinos and charged leptons are obtained. In the case of the $S_3$ Standard Model, from a $χ^{2}$ fit of the theoretical expressions of the lepton mixing matrix to the values extracted from experiment, the numerical values of the neutrino mixing angles are obtained in excellent agreement with experimental data. In the $S_3$ extension of the Standard Model, if two of the right handed neutrinos masses are degenerate, the reactor and atmospheric mixing angles are determined by the masses of the charged leptons, yielding $θ_{23}$ in excellent agreement with experimental data, and $θ_{13}$ different from zero but very small. If the masses of the three right handed neutrinos are assumed to be different, then it is possible to get $θ_{13}$ also in very good agreement with experimental data. We also show the branching ratios of some selected flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) process as well as the contribution of the exchange of a neutral flavour changing scalar to the anomaly of the magnetic moment of the muon.

Universal Mass Texture, CP violation and Quark-Lepton Complementarity

The measurements of the neutrino and quark mixing angles satisfy the empirical relations called Quark-Lepton Complementarity. These empirical relations suggest the existence of a correlation between the mixing matrices of leptons and quarks. In this work, we examine the possibility that this correlation between the mixing angles of quarks and leptons originates in the similar hierarchy of quarks and charged lepton masses and the seesaw mechanism type~I, that gives mass to the Majorana neutrinos. We assume that the similar mass hierarchies of charged lepton and quark masses allows us to represent all the mass matrices of Dirac fermions in terms of a universal form with four texture zeroes.

Lepton flavour violating processes in an S_3-symmetric model

A variety of lepton flavour violating effects related to the recent discovery of neutrino oscillations and mixings is here systematically discussed in terms of an S_3-flavour permutational symmetry. After presenting some relevant results on lepton masses and mixings, previously derived in a minimal S_3-invariant extension of the Standard Model, we compute the branching ratios of some selected flavour-changing neutral current processes (FCNC) as well as the contribution of the exchange of neutral flavour-changing scalar to the anomaly of the magnetic moment of the muon. We found that the minimal S_3-invariant extension of the Standard Model describes successfully masses and mixings, as well as, all flavour changing neutral current processes in excellent agreement with experiment.

Lepton masses, mixings and FCNC in a minimal S_3-invariant extension of the Standard Model

The mass matrices of the charged leptons and neutrinos, previously derived in a minimal S_3-invariant extension of the Standard Model, were reparametrized in terms of their eigenvalues. We obtained explicit, analytical expressions for all entries in the neutrino mixing matrix, V_PMNS, the neutrino mixing angles and the Majorana phases as functions of the masses of charged leptons and neutrinos in excellent agreement with the latest experimental values. The resulting V_PMNS matrix is very close to the tri-bimaximal form of the neutrino mixing matrix. We also derived explicit analytical expressions for the matrices of the Yukawa couplings and computed the branching ratios of some selected flavour changing neutral current processes as functions of the masses of the charged leptons and the neutral Higgs bosons. We find that the S_3 x Z_2 flavour symmetry and the strong mass hierarchy of the charged leptons strongly suppress the FCNC processes in the leptonic sector well below the present experimental upper bounds by many orders of magnitude.

Neutrino masses and mixings in a Minimal S_3-invariant Extension of the Standard Model

The mass matrices of the charged leptons and neutrinos, that had been derived in the framework of a Minimal S_3-invariant Extension of the Standard Model, are here reparametrized in terms of their eigenvalues. The neutrino mixing matrix, V_PMNS, is then computed and exact, explicit analytical expressions for the neutrino mixing angles as functions of the masses of the neutrinos and charged leptons are obtained. The reactor, theta_13, and the atmosferic, theta_23, mixing angles are found to be functions only of the masses of the charged leptons. The numerical values of theta_13{th} and theta_23{th} computed from our theoretical expressions are found to be in excellent agreement with the latest experimental determinations. The solar mixing angle, theta_12{th}, is found to be a function of both, the charged lepton and neutrino masses, as well as of a Majorana phase phi_nu. A comparison of our theoretical expression for the solar angle theta_12{th} with the latest experimental value theta_12{exp} ~ 34 deg allowed us to fix the scale and origin of the neutrino mass spectrum and obtain the mass values |m_nu1|=0.0507 eV, |m_nu2|=0.0499 eV and |m_nu3|=0.0193 eV, in very good agreement with the observations of neutrino oscillations, the bounds extracted from neutrinoless double beta decay and the precision cosmological measurements of the CMB.

Models of flavour with discrete symmetries

We briefly review some recent developments in theoretical models of fermion masses, mixings and CP violation with discrete non-Abelian symmetries. Then, we explain the main ideas of a recently proposed Minimal S_3 Invariant Extension of the Standard Model and its application to a unified analysis of masses, mixings and CP violation in the leptonic and quark sectors as well as the explicit computation of the V_PMNS and V_CKM mixing matrices.

Non-Hermitian degeneracy of two unbound states

We solved numerically the implicit, trascendental equation that defines the eigenenergy surface of a degenerating isolated doublet of unbound states in the simple but illustrative case of the scattering of a beam of particles by a double barrier potential. Unfolding the degeneracy point with the help of a contact equivalent approximant, crossings and anticrossings of energies and widths, as well as the changes of identity of the poles of the S-matrix are explained in terms of sections of the eigenenergy surfaces.

On quark-lepton complementarity

Recent measurements of the neutrino solar mixing angle and the Cabibbo angle satisfy the empirical relation theta_{sol} + theta_{C} ~ 45^{o}. This relation suggests the existence of a correlation between the mixing matrices of leptons and quarks, the so called quark-lepton complementarity. Here, we examine the possibility that this correlation originates in the strong hierarchy in the mass spectra of quarks and charged leptons, and the seesaw mechanism that gives mass to the Majorana neutrinos. In a unified treatment of quarks and leptons in which the mass matrices of all fermions have a similar Fritzsch texture, we calculate the mixing matrices V_{CKM} and U_{MNSP} as functions of quark and lepton masses and only two free parameters, in very good agreement with the latest experimental values on masses and mixings. Three essential ingredients to explain the quark-lepton complementarity relation are identified: the strong hierarchy in the mass spectra of quarks and charged leptons, the normal seesaw mechanism and the assumption of maximal CP violation in the lepton sector.

The Flavor Symmetry

Assuming that the lepton, quark and Higgs fields belong to the three-dimensional reducible representation of the permutation group S_3, we suggest a minimal S_3 invariant extension of the standard model. We find that in the leptonic sector, the exact S_3 x Z_2 symmetry, which allows 6 real independent parameters with two CP-violating phases, is consistent with experimental data and predicts a maximal mixing of the atmospheric neutrinos, and that the third neutrino is the lightest neutrino. With the exact S_3 only, there are 10 real parameters and five phases in the quark sector. A set of values of these parameters that are consistent with experimental observations is given.

Unfolding a degeneracy point of two unbound states: Crossings and anticrossings of energies and widths

We show that when an isolated doublet of unbound states of a physical system becomes degenerate for some values of the control parameters of the system, the energy hypersurfaces representing the complex resonance energy eigenvalues as functions of the control parameters have an algebraic branch point of rank one in parameter space. Associated with this singularity in parameter space, the scattering matrix, S_l(E), and the Green's function, G_l^(+)(k; r,r'), have one double pole in the unphysical sheet of the complex energy plane. We characterize the universal unfolding or deformation of a typical degeneracy point of two unbound states in parameter space by means of a universal 2-parameter family of functions which is contact equivalent to the pole position function of the isolated doublet of resonances at the exceptional point and includes all small perturbations of the degeneracy condition up to contact equivalence.

Jordan blocks and Gamow-Jordan eigenfunctions associated to a double pole of the S-matrix

An accidental degeneracy of resonances gives rise to a double pole in the scattering matrix, a double zero in the Jost function and a Jordan chain of length two of generalized Gamow-Jordan eigenfunctions of the radial Schroedinger equation. The generalized Gamow-Jordan eigenfunctions are basis elements of an expansion in bound and resonant energy eigenfunctions plus a continuum of scattering wave functions of complex wave number. In this biorthonormal basis, any operator which is a regular function of the Hamiltonian is represented by a complex matrix which is diagonal except for a Jordan block of rank two. The occurrence of a double pole in the Green's function, as well as the non-exponential time evolution of the Gamow-Jordan generalized eigenfunctions are associated to the Jordan block in the complex energy representation.

CP violating phase and quark mixing angles from flavour permutational symmetry breaking

The phase equivalence of the theoretical quark mixing matrix ${\bf V}^{th}$ derived from the breaking of the flavour permutational symmetry and the phenomenological parametrizations ${\bf V}^{PDG}$ and ${\bf V}^{KM}$ is explicitly exhibited. From here, we derive exact explicit expressions for the three mixing angles and the CP violating phase of the two phenomenological parametrizations in terms of the quark mass ratios $(m_{u}/m_{t}, m_{c}/m_{t}, m_{d}/m_{b}, m_{s}/m_{b})$ and the parameters $Z^{*1/2}$ and $Φ^*$ characterizing the preferred symmetry breaking pattern. The computed values for the CP violating phase and the mixing angles of the standard parametrization advocated by the Particle Data Group are $δ^*_{13}=73.2^\circ$, $\sinθ^*_{12}=0.222$, $\sinθ^*_{13}=0.0036$, and $\sinθ^*_{23}=0.040$. The computed values of the CP-violating phase and the mixing angles of the Kobayashi-Maskawa parametrization are $δ^*_{KM}=96.4^\circ$, $\sinθ^*_{1}=0.2225$, $\sinθ^*_{2}=0.0384$, and $\sinθ^*_{3}=0.0162$. In both cases, the numerical values of the mixing angles and CP-violating phase computed from quark masses and the flavour symmetry breaking parameters coincide almost exactly with the central values of the same parameters obtained from a fit to experimental data.

The CP violating phase δ_{13} and the quark mixing angles θ_{13}, θ_{23} and θ_{12} from flavour permutational symmetry breaking

The phase equivalence of the theoretical mixing matrix ${\bf V}^{th}$ derived from the breaking of the flavour permutational symmetry and the standard parametrization ${\bf V}^{PDG}$ advocated by the Particle Data Group is explicitly exhibited. From here, we derive exact explicit expressions for the three mixing angles $θ_{12}$, $θ_{13}$, $θ_{23}$, and the CP violating phase $δ_{13}$ in terms of the quark mass ratios $(m_{u}/m_{t}, m_{c}/m_{t}, m_{d}/m_{b}, m_{s}/m_{b})$ and the parameters $Z^{*1/2}$ and $Φ^*$ characterizing the preferred symmetry breaking pattern. The computed values for the CP violating phase and the mixing angles are: $δ^*_{13}=75^\circ$, $\sinθ^*_{12}=0.221$, $\sinθ^*_{13}=0.0034$, and $\sinθ^*_{23}=0.040$, which coincide almost exactly with the central values of the experimentally determined quantities.

The breaking of the flavour permutational symmetry: Mass textures and the CKM matrix

Different ansaetze for the breaking of the flavour permutational symmetry according to S(3)L X S(3)R in S(2)L X S(2) give different Hermitian mass matrices of the same modified Fritzsch type, which differ in the symmetry breaking pattern. In this work we obtain a clear and precise indication on the preferred symmetry breaking scheme from a fit of the predicted theoretical Vckm to the experimentally determined absolute values of the elements of the CKM matrix. The preferred scheme leads to simple mass textures and allows us to compute the CKM mixing matrix, the Jarlskog invariant J, and the three inner angles of the unitarity triangle in terms of four quark mass ratios and only one free parameter: the CP violating phase Phi. Excellent agreement with the experimentally determined absolute values of the entries in the CKM matrix is obtained for Phi = 90 deg. The corresponding computed values of the Jarlskog invariant and the inner angles are J = 3.00 X 10^-5, alpha= 84 deg, beta= 24 deg and gamma =72 deg in very good agreement with current data on CP violation in the neutral kaon-antikaon system and oscillations in the B-Bbar system.

Observational Tests of Instanton Cosmology

A new cosmological model leads to testable predictions that are different from those of both standard cosmology and models with a cosmological constant. The prediction that q_0=0 is the same as in other ``coasting universe'' models, but arises without the need for any exotic form of matter or other ad hoc assumptions.

A parametrization of the CKM mixing matrix from a scheme of S3L x S3R symmetry breaking

Recent interest in flavour or horizontal symmetry building (mass textures) has been spurred mainly by the large top mass and, hence, the strong hierarchy in quark masses. Recently, various symmetry breaking schemes have been proposed based on the discrete, non-Abelian group S3L x S3R, which is broken according to S3L x S3R > S3_diag > S2_diag. The group S3 treats three objects symmetrically, while the hierarchical nature of the Yukawa matrices is a consequence of the representation structure, 1 + 2, of S3, which treats the generations differently. Different ansaetze for the breaking of the sub-nuclear democracy give different Hermitian mass matrices, M, of the same modified Fritzsch type which differ in the numerical value of the ratio M_23/M_22. A fit to the experimentally determined absolute values of the elements of the CKM matrix gives bounds on the possible values of the CP violating phase and gives a clear indication on the preferred symmetry breaking scheme. A parametrization of the CKM mixing matrix in terms of four quark mass ratios and one CP violating phase in very good agreement with the absolute value of the experimentally determined values of the CKM matrix elements is obtained.

Accidental Degeneracy and Berry Phase of Resonant States

We study the complex geometric phase acquired by the resonant states of an open quantum system which evolves irreversibly in a slowly time dependent environment. In analogy with the case of bound states, the Berry phase factors of resonant states are holonomy group elements of a complex line bundle with structure group C*. In sharp contrast with bound states, accidental degeneracies of resonances produce a continuous closed line of singularities formally equivalent to a continuous distribution of "magnetic" charge on a "diabolical" circle, in consequence, we find different classes of topologically inequivalent non-trivial closed paths in parameter space.
