Deviation from Alday-Maldacena Duality For Wavy Circle

Alday-Maldacena conjecture is that the area A_P of the minimal surface in AdS_5 space with a boundary P, located in Euclidean space at infinity of AdS_5, coincides with a double integral D_P along P, the Abelian Wilson average in an auxiliary dual model. The boundary P is a polygon formed by momenta of n external light-like particles in N=4 SYM theory, and in a certain n=infty limit it can be substituted by an arbitrary smooth curve (wavy circle). The Alday-Maldacena conjecture is known to be violated for n>5, when it fails to be supported by the peculiar global conformal invariance, however, the structure of deviations remains obscure. The case of wavy lines can appear more convenient for analysis of these deviations due to the systematic method developed in arXiv:0803.1547 for (perturbative) evaluation of minimal areas, which is not yet available in the presence of angles at finite n. We correct a mistake in that paper and explicitly evaluate the h^2\bar h^2 terms, where the first deviation from the Alday-Maldacena duality arises for the wavy circle.

Partition Functions of Matrix Models as the First Special Functions of String Theory. II. Kontsevich Model

In arXiv:hep-th/0310113 we started a program of creating a reference-book on matrix-model tau-functions, the new generation of special functions, which are going to play an important role in string theory calculations. The main focus of that paper was on the one-matrix Hermitian model tau-functions. The present paper is devoted to a direct counterpart for the Kontsevich and Generalized Kontsevich Model (GKM) tau-functions. We mostly focus on calculating resolvents (=loop operator averages) in the Kontsevich model, with a special emphasis on its simplest (Gaussian) phase, where exists a surprising integral formula, and the expressions for the resolvents in the genus zero and one are especially simple (in particular, we generalize the known genus zero result to genus one). We also discuss various features of generic phases of the Kontsevich model, in particular, a counterpart of the unambiguous Gaussian solution in the generic case, the solution called Dijkgraaf-Vafa (DV) solution. Further, we extend the results to the GKM and, in particular, discuss the p-q duality in terms of resolvents and corresponding Riemann surfaces in the example of dualities between (2,3) and (3,2) models.

Virasoro constraints for Kontsevich-Hurwitz partition function

M.Kazarian and S.Lando found a 1-parametric interpolation between Kontsevich and Hurwitz partition functions, which entirely lies within the space of KP tau-functions. V.Bouchard and M.Marino suggested that this interpolation satisfies some deformed Virasoro constraints. However, they described the constraints in a somewhat sophisticated form of AMM-Eynard equations for the rather involved Lambert spectral curve. Here we present the relevant family of Virasoro constraints explicitly. They differ from the conventional continuous Virasoro constraints in the simplest possible way: by a constant shift u^2/24 of the L_{-1} operator, where u is an interpolation parameter between Kontsevich and Hurwitz models. This trivial modification of the string equation gives rise to the entire deformation which is a conjugation of the Virasoro constraints L_m -> U L_m U^{-1} and "twists" the partition function, Z_{KH}= U Z_K. The conjugation U is expressed through the previously unnoticed operators which annihilate the quasiclassical (planar) free energy of the Kontsevich model, but do not belong to the symmetry group GL(\infty) of the universal Grassmannian.

Resultants and Contour Integrals

Resultants are important special functions used in description of non-linear phenomena. Resultant $R_{r_1, ..., r_n}$ defines a condition of solvability for a system of $n$ homogeneous polynomials of degrees $r_1, ..., r_n$ in $n$ variables, just in the same way as determinant does for a system of linear equations. Unfortunately, there is a lack of convenient formulas for resultants when the number of variables is large. In this paper we use Cauchy contour integrals to obtain a polynomial formula for resultants, which is expected to be useful in applications.

"Anomaly" in n=infinity Alday-Maldacena Duality for Wavy Circle

If the Alday-Maldacena version of string/gauge duality is formulated as an equivalence between double loop and area integrals a la arXiv: 0708.1625, then this pure geometric relation can be tested for various choices of n-side polygons. The simplest possibility arises at n=infinity, with polygon substituted by an arbitrary continuous curve. If the curve is a circle, the minimal surface problem is exactly solvable. If it infinitesimally deviates from a circle, then the duality relation can be studied by expanding in powers of a small parameter. In the first approximation the Nambu-Goto (NG) equations can be linearized, and the peculiar NG Laplacian plays the central role. Making use of explicit zero-modes of this operator (NG-harmonic functions), we investigate the geometric duality in the lowest orders for small deformations of arbitrary shape lying in the plane of the original circle. We find a surprisingly strong dependence of the minimal area on regularization procedure affecting "the boundary terms" in minimal area. If these terms are totally omitted, the remaining piece is regularization independent, but still differs by simple numerical factors like 4 from the double-loop integral which represents the BDS formula so that we stop short from the first non-trivial confirmation of the Alday-Maldacena duality. This confirms the earlier-found discrepancy for two parallel lines at n=infinity, but demonstrates that it actually affects only a finite number (out of infinitely many) of parameters in the functional dependence on the shape of the boundary, and the duality is only slightly violated, which allows one to call this violation an anomaly.

Analogue of the identity Log Det = Trace Log for resultants

Resultant $R_{r_1, ..., r_n}$ defines a condition of solvability for a system of $n$ homogeneous polynomials of degrees $r_1, ..., r_n$ in $n$ variables, just in the same way as determinant does for a system of linear equations. Because of this, resultants are important special functions of upcoming non-linear physics and begin to play a role in various topics related to string theory. Unfortunately, there is a lack of convenient formulas for resultants when the number of variables is large. To cure this problem, we generalize the well-known identity Log Det = Trace Log from determinants to resultants. The generalized identity allows to obtain explicit polynomial formulas for multidimensional resultants: for any number of variables, resultant is given by a Schur polynomial. We also give several integral representations for resultants, as well as a sum-over-paths representation.

Effective categoricity of equivalence Structures

An equivalence structure is a set with a single binary relation, satisfying sentences stating that the relation is an equivalence relation. A computable structure A is said to be $Δ^0_α$ categorical if for any computable structure B isomorphic to A there is a $Δ^0_α$ function witnessing that the two are isomorphic. The present paper gives an exact characterization of $Δ^0_α$ equivalence structures where $α= 1$ or $α\geq 3$. Extensive results for $α= 2$ are also given, and open cases are exhaustively described.

Effective categoricity of Abelian p-groups

Let p be a fixed prime. An Abelian p-group is an Abelian group (not necessarily finitely generated) in which every element has for its order some power of p. The countable Abelian p-groups are classified by Ulm's theorem, and Khisamiev characterized the Abelian p-groups with computable copies. A computable structure A is said to be $Δ^0_α$ categorical if for any computable structure B isomorphic to A there is a $Δ^0_α$ function witnessing that the two are isomorphic. The present paper seeks to characterize $Δ^0_α$ categoricity for Abelian p-groups, and results of this kind are given for broad classes of Abelian p-groups and values of $α$. The remaining open cases are exhaustively described.

From Simplified BLG Action to the First-Quantized M-Theory

Concise summary of the recent progress in the search for the world-volume action for multiple M2 branes. After a recent discovery of simplified version of BLG action, which is based on the ordinary Lie-algebra structure, does not have coupling constants and extra dynamical fields, attention should be switched to the study of M2 brane dynamics. A viable brane analogue of Polyakov formalism and Belavin-Knizhnik theorem for strings can probably be provided by Palatini formalism for 3d (super)gravity.

NSR measures on hyperelliptic locus and non-renormalization of 1,2,3-point functions

We demonstrate (under a modest assumption) that the sums over spin-structures of the simplest combinations of fermionic correlators (Szego kernels) and DHP/CDG/Grushevsky NSR measures vanish at least on the hyperelliptic loci in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces -- despite the violation of the theta_e^4 hypothesis at g>2. This provides an additional important support to validity of these measures and is also a step towards a proof of the non-renormalization theorems in the NSR approach.

On the Problem of Multiple M2 Branes

A simplified version of 3d BL theory is considered, which allows any number N of M2 branes in d=11. The underlying 3-algebra structure is provided by degenerate U(N) Nambu bracket [X,Y,Z] = tr(X) [Y,Z] + tr(Y) [Z,X] + tr(Z) [X,Y], the corresponding f^{abcd} is not totally antisymmetric and extended supersymmetry of the action remains to be checked. All the fields, including auxiliary non-propagating gauge fields, are in adjoint representation of SU(N) and the only remnant of 3-algebra structure is an octuple of gauge singlets, acquiring vacuum expectation value in transition to D2 branes in d=10.

Alday-Maldacena duality and AdS Plateau problem

A short summary of approximate approach to the study of minimal surfaces in AdS, based on solving Nambu-Goto equations iteratively. Today, after partial denunciation of the BDS conjecture, this looks like the only constructive approach to understanding the ways of its possible modification and thus to saving the Alday-Maldacena duality. Numerous open technical problems are explicitly formulated throughout the text.

Introduction to Non-Linear Algebra

Concise introduction to a relatively new subject of non-linear algebra: literal extension of text-book linear algebra to the case of non-linear equations and maps. This powerful science is based on the notions of discriminant (hyperdeterminant) and resultant, which today can be effectively studied both analytically and by modern computer facilities. The paper is mostly focused on resultants of non-linear maps. First steps are described in direction of Mandelbrot-set theory, which is direct extension of the eigenvalue problem from linear algebra, and is related by renormalization group ideas to the theory of phase transitions and dualities.

Boundary Ring or a Way to Construct Approximate NG Solutions with Polygon Boundary Conditions. II. Polygons which admit an inscribed circle

We further develop the formalism of arXiv:0712.0159 for approximate solution of Nambu-Goto (NG) equations with polygon conditions in AdS backgrounds, needed in modern studies of the string/gauge duality. Inscribed circle condition is preserved, which leaves only one unknown function y_0(y_1,y_2) to solve for, what considerably simplifies our presentation. The problem is to find a delicate balance -- if not exact match -- between two different structures: NG equation -- a non-linear deformation of Laplace equation with solutions non-linearly deviating from holomorphic functions, -- and the boundary ring, associated with polygons made from null segments in Minkovski space. We provide more details about the theory of these structures and suggest an extended class of functions to be used at the next stage of Alday-Maldacena program: evaluation of regularized NG actions.

Boundary Ring: a way to construct approximate NG solutions with polygon boundary conditions: I. Z_n-symmetric configurations

We describe an algebro-geometric construction of polygon-bounded minimal surfaces in ADS_5, based on consideration of what we call the "boundary ring" of polynomials. The first non-trivial example of the Nambu-Goto (NG) solutions for Z_6-symmetric hexagon is considered in some detail. Solutions are represented as power series, of which only the first terms are evaluated. The NG equations leave a number of free parameters (a free function). Boundary conditions, which fix the free parameters, are imposed on truncated series. It is still unclear if explicit analytic formulas can be found in this way, but even approximate solutions, obtained by truncation of power series, can be sufficient to investigate the Alday-Maldacena -- BDS/BHT version of the string/gauge duality.

Some properties of the Alday-Maldacena minimum

The Alday-Maldacena solution, relevant to the n=4 gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM at strong coupling, was recently identified as a minimum of the regularized action in the moduli space of solutions of the AdS_5 sigma-model equations of motion. Analogous solutions of the Nambu-Goto equations for the n=4 case are presented and shown to form (modulo the reparametrization group) an equally large but different moduli space, with the Alday-Maldacena solution at the intersection of the sigma-model and Nambu-Goto moduli spaces. We comment upon the possible form of the regularized action for n=5. A function of moduli parameters z_a is written, whose minimum reproduces the BDDK one-loop five-gluon amplitude. This function may thus be considered as some kind of Legendre transform of the BDDK formula and has its own value independently of the Alday-Maldacena approach.
