Electron-ion recombination of Si IV forming Si III: Storage-ring measurement and multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations

The electron-ion recombination rate coefficient for Si IV forming Si III was measured at the heavy-ion storage-ring TSR. The experimental electron-ion collision energy range of 0-186 eV encompassed the 2p(6) nl n'l' dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 3s to nl core excitations, 2s 2p(6) 3s nl n'l' resonances associated with 2s to nl (n=3,4) core excitations, and 2p(5) 3s nl n'l' resonances associated with 2p to nl (n=3,...,infinity) core excitations. The experimental DR results are compared with theoretical calculations using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method for DR via the 3s to 3p n'l' and 3s to 3d n'l' (both n'=3,...,6) and 2p(5) 3s 3l n'l' (n'=3,4) capture channels. Finally, the experimental and theoretical plasma DR rate coefficients for Si IV forming Si III are derived and compared with previously available results.

16-20 Jupiter mass RV companion orbiting the brown dwarf candidate ChaHa8

We report the discovery of a 16-20 Jupiter mass radial velocity companion around the very young (~3 Myr) brown dwarf candidate ChaHa8 (M5.75-M6.5). Based on high-resolution echelle spectra of ChaHa8 taken between 2000 and 2007 with UVES at the VLT, a companion was detected through RV variability with a semi-amplitude of 1.6 km/s. A Kepler fit to the data yields an orbital period of the companion of 1590 days and an eccentricity of e=0.49. A companion minimum mass M2sini between 16 and 20 Jupiter masses is derived when using model-dependent mass estimates for the primary. The mass ratio q= M2/M1 might be as small as 0.2 and, with a probability of 87%, it is less than 0.4. ChaHa8 harbors most certainly the lowest mass companion detected so far in a close (~ 1 AU) orbit around a brown dwarf or very low-mass star. From the uncertainty in the orbit solution, it cannot completely be ruled out that the companion has a mass in the planetary regime. Its discovery is in any case an important step towards RV planet detections around BDs. Further, ChaHa8 is the fourth known spectroscopic brown dwarf or very low-mass binary system with an RV orbit solution and the second known very young one.

Photorecombination of berylliumlike Ti18+: Hyperfine quenching of dielectronic resonances

The photorecombination spectrum of 48Ti18+ was measured employing the merged electron-ion beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. The experimental electron-ion collision energy range 0-80 eV comprises all dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 2s->2p (Delta N =0) core excitations as well as trielectronic recombination (TR) resonances that involve 2s2->2p2 core double-excitations. At low collision energies DR resonances are observed that are associated with the excitation of metastable 2s2p 3P0 primary ions with nearly infinite lifetime for the isotope 48Ti with zero nuclear spin. For the isotope 47Ti with nonzero nuclear spin hyperfine quenching of these resonances occurs. The procedure for obtaining the associated time constant from a recombination measurement is outlined.

Active Cores in Deep Fields

Deep field observations are an essential tool to probe the cosmological evolution of galaxies. In this context, X-ray deep fields provide information about some of the most energetic cosmological objects: active galactic nuclei (AGN). Astronomers are interested in detecting sufficient numbers of AGN to probe the accretion history at high redshift. This talk gives an overview of the knowledge resulting from a highly complete soft X-ray selected sample collected with ROSAT, XMM-Newton and Chandra deep fields. The principal outcome based on X-ray luminosity functions and space density evolution studies is that low-luminosity AGN evolve in a dramatically different way from high-luminosity AGN: The most luminous quasars perform at significantly earlier cosmic times and are most numerous in a unit volume at cosmological redshift z~2. In contrast, low-luminosity AGN evolve later and their space density peaks at z~0.7. This finding is also interpreted as an anti-hierarchical growth of supermassive black holes in the Universe. Comparing this with star formation rate history studies one concludes that supermassive black holes enter the cosmic stage before the bulk of the first stars. Therefore, first solutions of the so-called hen-egg problem are suggested. Finally, status developments and expectations of ongoing and future extended observations such as the XMM-COSMOS project are highlighted.

Electron-ion recombination measurements motivated by AGN X-ray absorption features: Fe XIV forming Fe XIII

Recent spectroscopic models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have indicated that the recommended electron-ion recombination rate coefficients for iron ions with partially filled M-shells are incorrect in the temperature range where these ions form in photoionized plasmas. We have investigated this experimentally for Fe XIV forming Fe XIII. The recombination rate coefficient was measured employing the electron-ion merged beams method at the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage-ring TSR. The measured energy range of 0-260 eV encompassed all dielectronic recombination (DR) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3l 3l' 3l'' nl''' resonances associated with the 3p1/2 -> 3p3/2, 3s -> 3p, 3p -> 3d and 3s -> 3d core excitations within the M-shell of the Fe XIV 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p parent ion. This range also includes the 1s2 2s2 2p6 3l 3l' 4l'' nl''' resonances associated with 3s -> 4l'' and 3p -> 4l'' core excitations. We find that in the temperature range 2--14 eV, where Fe XIV is expected to form in a photoionized plasma, the Fe XIV recombination rate coefficient is orders of magnitude larger than previously calculated values.

First results from a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber in a Magnetic Field

A small liquid argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) was operated for the first time in a magnetic field of 0.55 Tesla. The imaging properties of the detector were not affected by the magnetic field. In a test run with cosmic rays a sample of through going and stopping muons was collected. The chamber with the readout electronics and the experimental setup are described. A few selected events were reconstructed and analyzed and the results are presented. The magnetic bending of the charged particle tracks allows the determination of the electric charge and the momentum, even for particles not fully contained in the drift chamber. These features are e.g. required for future neutrino detectors at a neutrino factory.

Experimental N V and Ne VIII low-temperature dielectronic recombination rate coefficients

The dielectronic recombination rate coefficients of N V and Ne VIII ions have been measured at a heavy-ion storage ring. The investigated energy ranges covered all dielectronic recombination resonances attached to 2s -> 2p (Delta n=0) core excitations. The rate coefficients in a plasma are derived and parameterized by using a convenient fit formula. The experimentally derived rate coefficients are compared with theoretical data by Colgan et al. (2004, A&A, 417, 1183) and Nahar & Pradhan (1997, ApJ, 111, 339) as well as with the recommended rate coefficients by Mazzotta et al. (1998, A&A, 133, 403). The data of Colgan et al. and Nahar & Pradhan reproduce the experiment very well over the temperature ranges where N V and Ne VIII are expected to exist in photoionized as well as in collisionally ionized plasmas. In contrast, the recommendation of Mazzotta et al. agrees with the experimental rate coefficient only in the temperature range of collisional ionization. At lower temperatures it deviates from the measured rate coefficient by orders of magnitude. In addition the influence of external electric fields with field strengths up to 1300 V/cm on the dielectronic recombination rate coefficient has been investigated.

Resonant photon absorption in the low spin molecule V15

We report the first study of the micro-SQUID response of a molecular system to electromagnetic radiation. The advantages of our micro-SQUID technique in respect to pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques consist in the possibility to perform time-resolved experiments (below 1 ns) on submicrometer sizes samples (about 1000 spins) at low temperature (below 100 mK). Resonant photon absorption in the GHz range was observed via low temperature micro-SQUID magnetization measurements of the spin ground state S = 1/2 of the molecular complex V15. The line-width essentially results from intra-molecular hyperfine interaction. The results point out that observing Rabi oscillations in molecular nanomagnets requires well isolated low spin systems and high radiation power. Our first results open the way for time-resolved observations of quantum superposition of spin-up and spin-down states in SMMs.

Experimental Mg IX photorecombination rate coefficient

The rate coefficient for radiative and dielectronic recombination of berylliumlike magnesium ions was measured with high resolution at the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage ring TSR. In the electron-ion collision energy range 0-207 eV resonances due to 2s -> 2p (Delta N = 0) and 2s -> 3l (Delta N=1) core excitations were detected. At low energies below 0.15 eV the recombination rate coefficient is dominated by strong 1s2 (2s 2p 3P) 7l resonances with the strongest one occuring at an energy of only 21 meV. These resonances decisively influence the Mg IX recombination rate coefficient in a low temperature plasma. The experimentally derived Mg IX dielectronic recombination rate coefficient (+-15% systematical uncertainty) is compared with the recommendation by Mazzotta et al. (1998, A&AS, 133, 403) and the recent calculations by Gu (2003, ApJ, 590, 1131) and by Colgan et al. (2003, A&A, 412, 597). These results deviate from the experimental rate coefficient by 130%, 82% and 25%, respectively, at the temperature where the fractional abundance of Mg IX is expected to peak in a photoionized plasma. At this temperature a theoretical uncertainty in the 1s2 (2s 2p 3P) 7l resonance positions of only 100 meV would translate into an uncertainty of the plasma rate coefficient of almost a factor 3. This finding emphasizes that an accurate theoretical calculation of the Mg IX recombination rate coefficient from first principles is challenging.

Mechanism of Ground State Selection in the Frustrated Molecular Spin Cluster V15

We report an inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study under a magnetic field on the frustrated molecular spin cluster $V_{15}$. Several field-dependent transitions are observed and provide a comprehensive understanding of the low-energy quantum spin states. The energy gap $2 Δ_{0}\approx 27(3)μ$eV between the two lowest $S=1/2$ Kramers doublets is unambiguously attributed to a symmetry lowering of the cluster. The INS data are mapped onto an S=1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg triangle with scalene distortion. A quantitative description of the wavefunction mixing within the ground state is derived.

Is Quark Saturation Related to the Pauli Principle?

Below the saturation momentum the sea quark occupation number reaches a pure number, independent of any parameters in QCD, reminiscent of a Pauli Principle result. We argue, however, that the Pauli Principle plays no role in the result.

Recombination rate coefficients for astrophysical applications from storage-ring experiments

The basic approach for measuring electron-ion recombination rate coefficients in merged-beams electron-ion collision experiments at heavy-ion storage rings is outlined. As an example experimental results for the low temperature recombination of C IV ions are compared with the recommended theoretical rate coefficient by Mazzotta et al. The latter deviates by factors of up to 5 from the experimental one.

Adiabatic Landau-Zener-Stückelberg transition with or without dissipation in low spin molecular system V15

The spin one half molecular system V15 shows no barrier against spin reversal. This makes possible direct phonon activation between the two levels. By tuning the field sweeping rate and the thermal coupling between sample and thermal reservoir we have control over the phonon-bottleneck phenomena previously reported in this system. We demonstrate adiabatic motion of molecule spins in time dependent magnetic fields and with different thermal coupling to the cryostat bath. We also discuss the origin of the zero-field tunneling splitting for a half-integer spin.

The V15 molecule, a multi-spin two-level system: adiabatic LZS transition with or without dissipation and Kramers theorem

The so-called V15 molecule is formed of 15 spins 1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled. The resultant spin is equal to 1/2. Contrary to what is expected at first sight, this half-integer spin is gapped. We show that this is a consequence of the multi-spin character of the molecule. Time reversal symmetry (Kramers theorem) is preserved due to the existence of a groundstate degeneracy larger than 2. Magnetization experiments have been performed at different temperatures, sweeping-field rates and couplings with the cryostat. Their interpretation in terms of the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg model gives evidence for adiabatic LZS spin reversal with and without dissipation.

Low-energy spin excitations in the molecular magnetic cluster V15

We report an Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) study of the fully deuterated molecular compound K6[V15As6O42].9(D2O) (V15). Due to geometrical frustration, the essential physics at low temperatures of the V15 cluster containing 15 coupled V4+ (S=1/2) is determined by three weakly coupled spin-1/2 on a triangle. The INS spectra at low-energy allow us to directly determine the effective exchange coupling J0 = 0.211 meV within the triangle and the gap 2 Δ= 0.035(2)meV between the two spin-1/2 doublets of the ground state. Results are discussed in terms of deviations from trigonal symmetry and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions.

Fermi surface and superconducting gap of triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d

We present a comprehensive study performed with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d single crystals. By measurements above TC the Fermi surface topology defined by the Fermi level crossings of the CuO2-derived band was determined. A hole-like Fermi surface as for single and double-CuO2 layered Bi-based cuprates is found, giving new input to the current debate of the general Fermi surface topology of the high Tc superconductors. Furthermore, we present measurements of the superconducting gap of Bi-2223 and show that there are clear indications for a strong anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The universal properties of this phase in comparison to the other Bi-based cuprates will be discussed.

Dielectronic Recombination (via N=2 --> N'=2 Core Excitations) and Radiative Recombination of Fe XX: Laboratory Measurements and Theoretical Calculations

We have measured the resonance strengths and energies for dielectronic recombination (DR) of Fe XX forming Fe XIX via N=2 --> N'=2 (Delta_N=0) core excitations. We have also calculated the DR resonance strengths and energies using AUTOSTRUCTURE, HULLAC, MCDF, and R-matrix methods, four different state-of-the-art theoretical techniques. On average the theoretical resonance strengths agree to within <~10% with experiment. However, the 1 sigma standard deviation for the ratios of the theoretical-to-experimental resonance strengths is >~30% which is significantly larger than the estimated relative experimental uncertainty of <~10%. This suggests that similar errors exist in the calculated level populations and line emission spectrum of the recombined ion. We confirm that theoretical methods based on inverse-photoionization calculations (e.g., undamped R-matrix methods) will severely overestimate the strength of the DR process unless they include the effects of radiation damping. We also find that the coupling between the DR and radiative recombination (RR) channels is small. We have used our experimental and theoretical results to produce Maxwellian-averaged rate coefficients for Delta_N=0 DR of Fe XX. For kT>~1 eV, which includes the predicted formation temperatures for Fe XX in an optically thin, low-density photoionized plasma with cosmic abundances, our experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement. We have also used our R-matrix results, topped off using AUTOSTRUCTURE for RR into J>=25 levels, to calculate the rate coefficient for RR of Fe XX. Our RR results are in good agreement with previously published calculations.
