Direct Observation of Attractive Skyrmions and Skyrmion Clusters in the Cubic Helimagnet Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

We report the discovery of attractive magnetic skyrmions and their clusters in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnets. These three-dimensional solitons have been predicted to exist in the cone phase of chiral ferromagnets (J. Phys: Condens. Matter 28 (2016) 35LT01) and are fundamentally different from the more common repulsive axisymmetric skyrmions that occur in the magnetically saturated state. We present real-space images of these skyrmion clusters in thin (~70 nm) single-crystal samples of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ taken using transmission electron microscopy and develop a phenomenological theory describing this type of skyrmion.

Fan-type spin structure in uni-axial chiral magnets

We investigate the spin structure of a uni-axial chiral magnet near the transition temperatures in low fields perpendicular to the helical axis. We find a fan-type modulation structure where the clockwise and counterclockwise windings appear alternatively along the propagation direction of the modulation structure. This structure is often realized in a Yoshimori-type (non-chiral) helimagnet but it is rarely realized in a chiral helimagnet. To discuss underlying physics of this structure, we reconsider the phase diagram (phase boundary and crossover lines) through the free energy and asymptotic behaviors of isolated solitons. The fan structure appears slightly below the phase boundary of the continuous transition of instability-type. In this region, there are no solutions containing any types of isolated solitons to the mean field equations.

Spintronics via non-axisymmetric chiral skyrmions

Micromagnetic calculations demonstrate a peculiar evolution of non-axisymmetric skyrmions driven by an applied magnetic field in confined helimagnets with longitudinal modulations. We argue that these specific solitonic states can be employed in nanoelectronic devices as an effective alternative to the common axisymmetric skyrmions which occur in magnetically saturated states.

Internal structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattices in cubic helimagnets

We have utilised a high spatial resolution imaging method, Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), for precise measurement of the magnetic induction distribution in skyrmion states in noncentrosymmetric magnetically ordered materials. Applied to investigate the internal structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattice cells, stabilised by an out-plane applied magnetic field in an FeGe nanowedge specimen, mapping of the in-plane component of magnetic induction has yielded "average" skyrmion profiles and observation of internal six-fold symmetry. With increasing field strength, the diameter of "average" skyrmion cores was observed to decrease accompanied by a non-linear variation of the lattice periodicity. Variations in structure for individual skyrmions were studied utilising an advanced DPC detection scheme with a variety of symmetry lowering distortions being observed. Our observations are consistent with a theoretical phenomenological model, which has predicted the structure of hexagonal skyrmion lattice cells and also that twisting states near to the material surfaces provide a basis for energetic stabilisation of the skyrmion lattice over the conical phase. There was good agreement with experiment for predictions of bulk skyrmion structure and their response (core-size & lattice periodicity variation) to an applied field.

Chiral surface twists and skyrmion stability in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets

Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) investigations of modulated states in a FeGe wedge and detailed calculations demonstrate that chiral twists arising near the surfaces of noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets (Meynell et al. Phys. Rev. B, 90, 014406 (2014)) provide a stabilization mechanism for skyrmion lattices and helicoids in cubic helimagnet nanolayers. The calculated magnetic phase diagram for free standing cubic helimagnet nanolayers shows that magnetization processes in these compounds fundamentally differ from those in bulk cubic helimagnets and are characterized by the first-order transitions between modulated phases and the formation of specific multidomain states. The paper reports LTEM observations of multidomain patterns in FeGe free-standing nanolayers.

The properties of isolated chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic films

Axisymmetric solitonic states (chiral skyrmions) have been predicted theoretically more than two decades ago. However, until recently they have been observed in a form of skyrmionic condensates (hexagonal lattices and other mesophases). In this paper we report experimental and theoretical investigations of isolated chiral skyrmions discovered in PdFe/Ir(111) bilayers two years ago (Science 341 , 636 (2013)). The results of spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy analyzed within the continuum and discrete models provide a consistent description of isolated skyrmions in thin layers. The existence region of chiral skyrmions is restricted by strip-out instabilities at low fields and a collapse at high fields. We demonstrate that the same equations describe axisymmetric localized states in all condensed matter systems with broken mirror symmetry, and thus our findings establish basic properties of isolated skyrmions common for chiral liquid crystals, different classes of noncentrosymmetric magnets, ferroelectrics, and multiferroics.

Theory of skyrmion states in liquid crystals: axisymmetric cholesteric bubbles (spherulites)

Within the Oseen-Frank theory we derive numerically exact solutions for axisymmetric localized states in chiral liquid crystal layers with homeotropic anchoring. These solutions describe recently observed two-dimensional skyrmions in confinement-frustrated chiral nematics [P. J. Acherman et al. Phys. Rev. E 90, 012505 (2014)]. We stress that these solitonic states arise due to a fundamental stabilization mechanism responsible for the formation of skyrmions in cubic helimagnets and other noncentrosymmetric condensed-matter systems.

Surface twist instabilities and skyrmion states in chiral ferromagnets

In epitaxial MnSi/Si(111) films, the in-plane magnetization saturation is never reached due to the formation of specific surface chiral modulations with the propagation direction perpendicular to the film surfaces [Wilson et al. Phys. Rev. B 88, 214420 (2013)]. In this paper we show that the occurrence of such chiral surface twists is a general effect attributed to all bulk and con- fined magnetic crystals lacking inversion symmetry. We present experimental investigations of this phenomenon in nanolayers of MnSi/Si(111) supported by detailed theoretical analysis within the standard phenomenological model. In magnetic nanolayers with intrinsic or induced chirality, such surface induced instabilities become sizeable effects and play a crucial role in the formation of skyrmion lattices and other nontrivial chiral modulations.

Chiral skyrmions in cubic helimagnet films: the role of uniaxial anisotropy

This paper reports on magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements of MnSi epilayers performed in out-of-plane magnetic fields. We present a theoretical analysis of the chiral modulations that arise in confined cubic helimagnets where the uniaxial anisotropy axis and magnetic field are both out-of-plane. In contrast to in-plane field measurements (Wilson et al., Phys. Rev. B 86, 144420 (2012)), the hard-axis uniaxial anisotropy in MnSi/Si(111) increases the energy of (111)-oriented skyrmions and in-plane helicoids relative to the cone phase, and makes the cone phase the only stable magnetic texture below the saturation field. While induced uniaxial anisotropy is important in stabilizing skyrmion lattices and helicoids in other confined cubic helimagnets, the particular anisotropy in MnSi/Si(111) entirely suppresses these states in an out-of-plane magnetic field. However, it is predicted that isolated skyrmions with enlarged sizes exist in MnSi/Si(111) epilayers in a broad range of out-of-plane magnetic fields.

Discrete helicoidal states in chiral magnetic thin films

Magnetometry and magnetoresistance measurements in MnSi thin films and rigorous analytical solutions of the micromagnetic equations show that the field-induced unwinding of confined helicoids occurs via discrete steps. A comparison between the magnetometry data and theoretical results shows that finite size effects confine the wavelength and lead to a quantization of the number of turns in the helicoid. We demonstrate a prototypical spintronic device where the magnetic field can push or pull individual turns into a magnetic spring that can be read by electrical means.

Three-dimensional skyrmion states in thin films of cubic helimagnets

A direct three-dimensional minimization of the standard energy functional shows that in thin films of cubic helimagnets chiral skyrmions are modulated along three spatial directions. The structure of such 3D skyrmions can be thought of as a superposition of conical modulations along the skyrmion axis and double-twist rotation in the perpendicular plane. Numerical solutions for chiral modulations demonstrate that 3D skyrmion lattices and helicoids are thermodynamically stable in a broad range of applied magnetic fields. Our results disclose a basic physical mechanism underlying the formation of skyrmion states recently observed in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets.

Extended elliptic skyrmion gratings in epitaxial MnSi thin films

A detailed investigation of the magnetization processes in epitaxial MnSi thin film reveals the existence of elliptically distorted skyrmion strings that lie in the plane of the film. We provide proof that the uniaxial anisotropy stabilizes this state over extended regions of the magnetic phase diagram. Theoretical analysis of an observed cascade of first-order phase transitions is based on rig- orous numerical calculations of competing chiral modulations, which shows the existence of helicoids, elliptic skyrmions, and cone phases.

Confinement of Chiral Magnetic Modulations in the Precursor Region of FeGe

We report on magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements of the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at T_C=278.2(3)K. Pronounced anomalies in the field-dependent chi_ac(H) data as well as in the corresponding imaginary part chi"_ac(H) reveal a precursor region around T_C in the magnetic phase diagram. The occurrence of a maximum at T_0=279.6K in the zero-field specific heat data indicates a second order transition into a magnetically ordered state. A shoulder evolves above this maximum as a magnetic field is applied. The field dependence of both features coincides with crossover lines from the field-polarized to the paramagnetic state deduced from chi_ac(T) at constant magnetic fields. The experimental findings are analyzed within the standard Dzyaloshinskii theory for cubic helimagnets. The remarkable multiplicity of modulated precursor states and the complexity of the magnetic phase diagram near the magnetic ordering are explained by the change of the character of solitonic inter-core interactions and the onset of specific confined chiral modulations in this area.

Chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic films: new objects for magnetic storage technologies?

Axisymmetric magnetic lines of nanometer sizes (chiral vortices or skyrmions) have been predicted to exist in a large group of noncentrosymmetric crystals more than two decades ago. Recently these magnetic textures have been directly observed in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets and monolayers of magnetic metals. We develop a micromagnetic theory of chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic layers for magnetic materials with intrinsic and induced chirality. Such particle-like and stable micromagnetic objects can exist in broad ranges of applied magnetic fields including zero field. Chiral skyrmions can be used as a new type of highly mobile nanoscale data carriers.

Precursor phenomena at the magnetic ordering of the cubic helimagnet FeGe

We report on detailed magnetic measurements on the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at $T_C= 278.2(3)$ K. Precursor phenomena display a complex succession of temperature-driven crossovers and phase transitions in the vicinity of $T_C$. The A-phase region, present below $T_C$ and fields $H<0.5$ kOe, is split in several pockets. Relying on a modified phenomenological theory for chiral magnets, the main part of the A-phase could indicate the existence of a $+π$ Skyrmion lattice, the adjacent A$_2$ pocket, however, appears to be related to helicoids propagating in directions perpendicular to the applied field.

Confinement of Skyrmion states in noncentrosymmetric magnets

Skyrmionic states in noncentrosymmetric magnets with Lifshitz invariants are investigated within the phenomenological Dzyaloshinskii model. The interaction between the chiral Skyrmions, being repulsive in a broad temperature range, changes into attraction at high temperatures. This leads to a remarkable confinement effect: near the ordering temperature Skyrmions exist only as bound states, and Skyrmion lattices are formed by an unusual instability-type nucleation transition. Numerical investigations on two-dimensional models demonstrate the confinement and the occurrence of different Skyrmion lattice precursor states near the ordering transition that can become thermodynamically stable by anisotropy or longitudinal softness in cubic helimagnets.

Stabilization of Skyrmion textures by uniaxial distortions in noncentrosymmetric cubic helimagnets

In cubic noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets uniaxial distortions suppress the helical states and stabilize Skyrmion lattices in a broad range of thermodynamical parameters. Using a phenomenological theory for modulated and localized states in chiral magnets, the equilibrium parameters of the Skyrmion and helical states are derived as functions of the applied magnetic field and induced uniaxial anisotropy. These results show that due to a combined effect of induced uniaxial anisotropy and an applied magnetic field Skyrmion lattices can be formed as thermodynamically stable states in large intervals of magnetic field and temperatures in cubic helimagnets, e.g., in intermetallic compounds MnSi, FeGe, (Fe,Co)Si. We argue that this mechanism is responsible for the formation of Skyrmion states recently observed in thin layers of Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5}Si [X.Z.Yu et al., Nature \textbf{465}(2010) 901].
