Probabilistic motional averaging

In a continuous measurement scheme a spin-1/2 particle can be measured and simultaneously driven by an external resonant signal. When the driving is weak, it does not prevent the particle wave-function from collapsing and a detector randomly outputs two responses corresponding to the states of the particle. In contrast, when driving is strong, the detector returns a single response corresponding to the mean of the two single-state responses. This situation is similar to a motional averaging, observed in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We study such quantum system, being periodically driven and probed, which consists of a qubit coupled to a quantum resonator. It is demonstrated that the transmission through the resonator is defined by the interplay between driving strength, qubit dissipation, and resonator linewidth. We demonstrate that our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical and analytical calculations.

Proximity and Josephson effects in microstructures based on multiband superconductors

Emerging in the 1950s, the multiband superconductivity has been considered for a long time as an approximate model in the form of a generalization of the BCS theory to the case of two bands for a more accurate quantitative description of the properties and characteristics of such superconductors as cuprates, heavy fermions compounds, metal boron carbides, fullerides, strontium ruthenate etc. due to their complex piecewise-continuous Fermi surfaces. However the discovery of the multiband structure of the superconducting state in magnesium diboride in 2001 and iron oxypnictides and chalcogenides in 2008 led to the appearance of many papers in which effects and different dependences well known for conventional single-band s-wave superconductors were reexamined. The main purpose of these studies was to reveal the symmetry type of the order parameter, which provides an important information about the mechanism of Cooper pairing in these superconductors. One of the most effective methods of obtaining information on the symmetry properties of the order parameter in the multiband superconductors is phase-sensitive techniques. This review summarizes the results of theoretical and experimental studies of the proximity and Josephson effects in systems based on multiband superconductors in contact with normal metals, insulators and other superconductors.

Josephson systems based on ballistic point contacts between single-band and multi-band superconductors

The Josephson effect in ballistic point contacts between single-band and multi-band superconductors was investigated. It was found that in the case of Josephson junctions formed by a single-band and an $s_\pm$-wave two-band superconductor as well as by a single-band and a three-band superconductor the junctions become frustrated, demonstrating the $ϕ$-contact properties. Depending on the ground state of a three-band superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS), the Josephson junction can have from one to three energy minima, some of which can be locally stable. We also study the behavior of a dc SQUID based on the Josephson junctions between single-band and multi-band superconductors. Some features on the dependences of the critical current and the total magnetic flux on the applied flux of a dc SQUID based on the Josephson point contacts between a single-band superconductor and an $s_\pm$-wave superconductor, three-band superconductor with BTRS and three-band superconductor without BTRS as compared to the conventional dc SQUIDs based on single-band superconductors were found. The results can be used as an experimental tool to detect the existence of multi-band structure and BTRS.

Dc SQUID based on a three-band superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry

The behavior of a dc SQUID, based on a dirty point contacts between a single-band and three-band superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry is investigated. Using earlier obtained results for Josephson effects in such systems new features in characteristics of a dc SQUID are revealed. It is shown that in the case of a BTRS (broken time-reversal symmetry) three-band superconductor for the applied external magnetic flux, which is divisible by the half-integer flux, strong degeneracy of ground states of a dc SQUID is taken place. This can lead to the appearance of possible multi-hysteresis loops on a dependence of a total flux in the dc SQUID from the externally applied flux. The number of these loops depends on the position of ground states of a three-band superconductor. Also it is found that dependencies of a critical current on applied magnetic flux can have complicated multi-periodic forms, which are differ from strictly periodic characteristics for conventional dc SQUIDs and Fraunhofer patterns for Josephson contacts in the external magnetic field.

Frustration phenomena in Josephson point contacts between single-band and three-band superconductors

Within the formalism of Usadel equations the Josephson effect in dirty point contacts between single-band and three-band superconductors is investigated. The general expression for the Josephson current, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures, is obtained. We calculate current-phase relations for very low temperature and in the vicinity of the critical temperature. For three-band superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) point contacts undergo frustration phenomena with different current-phase relations, corresponding to ϕ-contacts. For three-band superconductors without BTRS we have close to sinusoidal current-phase relations and absence of the frustration, excepting the case of very low temperature, where under certain conditions two ground states of the point contact are realized. Our results can be used as the potential probe for the detection of the possible BTRS state in three-band superconducting systems.

Amplification and attenuation of a probe signal by doubly-dressed states

We analyse a system composed of a qubit coupled to electromagnetic fields of two high quality quantum oscillators. Particular realization of such a system is the superconducting qubit coupled to a transmission-line resonator driven by two signals with frequencies close to the resonator's harmonics. One strong signal is used for exciting the system to a high energetic state while the second weak signal is applied for probing effective eigenstates of the system. We demonstrate that a description of the system dynamics as doubly dressed qubit is applicable. Experiments show that in the case of high quality resonators the energy levels and the resonance conditions can be probed even for high driving amplitudes. The interaction of the qubit with photons of two harmonics has prospects to be used as a quantum amplifier or an attenuator.

Noise-spectroscopy of multiqubit systems: Determining all their parameters by applying an external classical noise

Imagine that you have several sets of two coupled qubits, but you do not know the parameters of their Hamitonians. How to determine these without resorting to the usual spectroscopy approach to the problem? Based on numerical modeling, we show that all the parameters of a system of two coupled qubits can be determined by applying to it an external classical noise and analysing the Fourier spectrum of the elements of the system's density matrix. In particular, the interlevel spacings as well as the strength and sign of qubit-qubit coupling can be determined this way.

Two-qubit parametric amplifier: large amplification of weak signals

Using numerical simulations, we show that two coupled qubits can amplify a weak signal about hundredfold. This can be achieved if the two qubits are biased simultaneously by this weak signal and a strong pump signal, both of which having frequencies close to the inter-level transitions in the system. The weak signal strongly affects the spectrum generated by the strong pumping drive by producing and controlling mixed harmonics with amplitudes of the order of the main harmonic of the strong drive. We show that the amplification is robust with respect to noise, with an intensity of the order of the weak signal. When deviating from the optimal regime (corresponding to strong qubit coupling and a weak-signal frequency equal to the inter-level transition frequency) the proposed amplifier becomes less efficient, but it can still considerably enhance a weak signal (by several tens). We therefore propose to use coupled qubits as a combined parametric amplifier and frequency shifter.

Multiphoton transitions in Josephson-junction qubits (Review Article)

Two basic physical models, a two-level system and a harmonic oscillator, are realized on the mesoscopic scale as coupled qubit and resonator. The realistic system includes moreover the electronics for controlling the distance between the qubit energy levels and their populations and to read out the resonator's state, as well as the unavoidable dissipative environment. Such rich system is interesting both for the study of fundamental quantum phenomena on the mesoscopic scale and as a promising system for future electronic devices. We present recent results for the driven superconducting qubit-resonator system, where the resonator can be realized as an LC circuit or a nanomechanical resonator. Most of the results can be described by the semiclassical theory, where a qubit is treated as a quantum two-level system coupled to the classical driving field and the classical resonator. Application of this theory allows to describe many phenomena for the single and two coupled superconducting qubits, among which are the following: the equilibrium-state and weak-driving spectroscopy, Sisyphus damping and amplification, Landau-Zener-Stückelberg interferometry, the multiphoton transitions of both direct and ladder- type character, and creation of the inverse population for lasing.

Dissipative dynamics of a two-qubit system: Four-level lasing

The dissipative dynamics of a two-qubit system is studied theoretically. We make use of the Bloch-Redfield formalism which explicitly includes the parameter-dependent relaxation rates. We consider the case of two flux qubits, when the controlling parameters are the partial magnetic fluxes through the qubits' loops. The strong dependence of the inter-level relaxation rates on the controlling magnetic fluxes is demonstrated for the realistic system. This allows us to propose several mechanisms for lasing in this four-level system.

Soliton states in mesoscopic two-band-superconducting cylinders

In the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau approach, we present a self-consistent theory of specific soliton states in mesoscopic (thin-walled) two-band-superconducting cylinders in external parallel magnetic fields. Such states arise in the presence of "Josephson-type" interband coupling, when phase winding numbers are different for each component of the superconducting order parameter. We evaluate the Gibbs free energy of the sysyem up to second-order terms in a certain dimensionless parameter $ε\approx\frac{\mathcal{L}_{m}}{\mathcal{L}_{k}}\ll1$, where $\mathcal{L}_{m}$ and $\mathcal{L}_{k} $ are the magnetic and kinetic inductance, respectively. We derive the complete set of exact soliton solutions. These solutions are thoroughly analyzed from the viewpoint of both local and global (thermodynamic) stability. In particular, we show that rotational-symmetry-breaking caused by the formation of solitons gives rise to a zero-frequency rotational mode. Although soliton states prove to be thermodynamically metastable, the minimal energy gap between the lowest-lying single-soliton states and thermodynamically stable zero-soliton states can be much smaller than the magnetic Gibbs free energy of the latter states, provided that intraband "penetration depths" differ substantially and interband coupling is weak. The results of our investigation may apply to a wide class of mesoscopic doubly-connected structures exhibiting two-band superconductivity.

Quantum behaviour of a flux qubit coupled to a resonator

We present a detailed theoretical analysis for a system of a superconducting flux qubit coupled to a transmission line resonator. The master equation, accounting incoherent processes for a weakly populated resonator, is analytically solved. An electromagnetic wave transmission coefficient through the system, which provides a tool for probing dressed states of the qubit, is derived. We also consider a general case for the resonator with more than one photon population and compare the results with an experiment on the qubit-resonator system in the intermediate coupling regime, when the coupling energy is comparable with the qubit relaxation rate.

Josephson currents in point contacts between dirty two-band superconductors

We developed microscopic theory of Josephson effect in point contacts between dirty two-band superconductors. The general expression for the Josephson current, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures, is obtained. This expression was used for calculation of current-phase relations and temperature dependences of critical current with application to MgB2 superconductor. Also we have considered influence on contact characteristics interband scattering effect appeared in case of dirty superconductors. It is shown that the correction to Josephson current due to the interband scattering depends on phase shift in the banks (i.e. s- or s+/- -wave symmetry of order parameters)

Weak continuous monitoring of a flux qubit using coplanar waveguide resonator

We study a flux qubit in a coplanar waveguide resonator by measuring transmission through the system. In our system with the flux qubit decoupled galvanically from the resonator, the intermediate coupling regime is achieved. In this regime dispersive readout is possible with weak backaction on the qubit. The detailed theoretical analysis and simulations give a good agreement with the experimental data and allow to make the qubit characterization.

Multiphoton excitations and inverse population in two-flux-qubit system

We study spectroscopy of artificial solid-state four-level quantum system. This system is formed by two coupled superconducting flux qubits. When multiple driving frequency of the applied microwaves matches the energy difference between any two levels, the transition to the upper level is induced. We demonstrate two types of the multi-photon transitions: direct transitions between two levels and ladder-type transitions via an intermediate level. For the latter transitions, in particular, the inverse population of the excited state with respect to the ground one is realized. These processes can be useful for the control of the level population for the multilevel scalable quantum systems.

Josephson effect in point contacts between two-band superconductors

The microscopic theory of Josephson effect in point contacts between two-band superconductors is developed. The general expression for the Josephson current, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures, is obtained. We considered the dirty superconductors with interband scattering, which produces the coupling of the Josephson currents between different bands. The influence of phase shifts and interband scattering rates in the banks is analyzed near critical temperature Tc. It is shown that for some values of parameters the critical current can be negative, which means the pi-junction behavior.

Noise-induced quantum coherence and persistent Rabi oscillations in a Josephson flux qubit

We demonstrate theoretically the noise-stimulated enhancement of quantum coherence in a superconducting flux qubit. First, an external classical noise can increase the off-diagonal components of the qubit density matrix. Second, in the presence of noise, the Rabi oscillations survive for times significantly longer than the Rabi decay time in a noiseless system. These Rabi oscillations appear as a modulation of the forced response of the qubit to the ac driving field. These effects can be considered as a manifestation of quantum stochastic resonance and are relevant to experimental techniques, such as Rabi spectroscopy.

Dynamics of Josephson-junction qubits with exactly solvable time-dependent bias pulses

The quantum dynamics of a two-state system (qubit) can be governed by means of external control parameters present in time-dependent bias pulses of special forms. We consider the class of biases for which the time evolution equation without a dissipation can be solved exactly. Concentrating for definiteness on the flux qubit we calculate the probability of the definite direction of the current in the loop and its time-averaged values as functions of the qubit's control parameters both analytically and solving numerically the equation of motion for the density matrix in the presence of relaxation and decoherence. It is shown that there exist such time-dependent biases that the definite current direction probability with no dissipation taken into account becomes a monotonously growing function of time tending to a value which may exceed 1/2. We also calculate the probability to find the system in the excited state and show the possibility of the inverse population in a properly driven two-state system provided the relaxation and dephasing rates are small enough.
