Resonant excitations of single and two-qubit systems coupled to a tank circuit

The interaction of flux qubits with a low frequency tank circuit is studied. It is shown that changes in the state of the interacting qubits influence the effective impedance of the circuit, which is the essence of the so-called impedance measurement technique. The multiphoton resonant excitations in both single flux qubits and pairs of coupled flux qubits are investigated. In particular, we compare our theoretical results with recent spectroscopy measurements, Landau-Zener interferometry, and multiphoton fringes.

Consistency of ground state and spectroscopic measurements on flux qubits

We compare the results of ground state and spectroscopic measurements carried out on superconducting flux qubits which are effective two-level quantum systems. For a single qubit and for two coupled qubits we show excellent agreement between the parameters of the pseudospin Hamiltonian found using both methods. We argue, that by making use of the ground state measurements the Hamiltonian of N coupled flux qubits can be reconstructed as well at temperatures smaller than the energy level separation. Such a reconstruction of a many-qubit Hamiltonian can be useful for future quantum information processing devices.

Distinguishing quantum from classical oscillations in a driven phase qubit

Rabi oscillations are coherent transitions in a quantum two-level system under the influence of a resonant perturbation, with a much lower frequency dependent on the perturbation amplitude. These serve as one of the signatures of quantum coherent evolution in mesoscopic systems. It was shown recently [N. Gronbech-Jensen and M. Cirillo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 067001 (2005)] that in phase qubits (current-biased Josephson junctions) this effect can be mimicked by classical oscillations arising due to the anharmonicity of the effective potential. Nevertheless, we find qualitative differences between the classical and quantum effect. First, while the quantum Rabi oscillations can be produced by the subharmonics of the resonant frequency (multiphoton processes), the classical effect also exists when the system is excited at the overtones. Second, the shape of the resonance is, in the classical case, characteristically asymmetric; while quantum resonances are described by symmetric Lorentzians. Third, the anharmonicity of the potential results in the negative shift of the resonant frequency in the classical case, in contrast to the positive Bloch-Siegert shift in the quantum case. We show that in the relevant range of parameters these features allow to confidently distinguish the bona fide Rabi oscillations from their classical Doppelganger.

Magnetic flux noise in the three Josephson junctions superconducting ring

We analyze the influence of noise on magnetic properties of a su- perconducting loop which contains three Josephson junctions. This circuit is a classical analog of a persistent current (flux) qubit. A loop supercurrent induced by external magnetic field in the presence of thermal fluctuations is calculated. In order to get connection with experiment we calculate the impedance of the low-frequency tank cir- cuit which is inductively coupled with a loop of interest. We compare obtained results with the results in quantum mode - when the three junction loop exhibits quantum tunneling of the magnetic flux. We demonstrate that the tank-loop impedance in the classical and quan- tum modes have different temperature dependence and can be easily distinguished experimentally.

Pseudo-Rabi oscillations in superconducting flux qubits in the classical regime

Nonlinear effects in mesoscopic devices can have both quantum and classical origins. We show that a three-Josephson-junction (3JJ) flux qubit in the _classical_ regime can produce low-frequency oscillations in the presence of an external field in resonance with the (high-frequency) harmonic mode of the system, $ω$. Like in the case of_quantum_ Rabi oscillations, the frequency of these pseudo-Rabi oscillations is much smaller than $ω$ and scales approximately linearly with the amplitude of the external field. This classical effect can be reliably distinguished from its quantum counterpart because it can be produced by the external perturbation not only at the resonance frequency $ω$ and its subharmonics ($ω/n$), but also at its overtones, $nω$.

Coherent current states in a two-band superconductor

Homogeneous current states in thin films and Josephson current in superconducting microbridges are studied within the frame of a two-band Ginzburg-Landau theory. By solving the coupled system of equations for two order parameters the depairing current curves and Josephson current-phase relation are calculated for different values of phenomenological parameters gamma and eta. Coefficients gamma and eta describe the coupling of order parameters (proximity effect) and their gradients (drag effect) respectively. For definite values of parameters the dependence of current j on superfluid momentum contains local minimum and corresponding bi-stable states. It is shown that the Josephson microbridge from two-band superconductor can demonstrate pi-junction behaviour.

Resonant effects in the strongly driven phase-biased Cooper-pair box

We study the time-averaged upper level occupation probability in a strongly driven two level system, particularly its dependence on the driving amplitude, frequency and the energy level separation. In contrast to the case of weak driving, when the positions of the resonances almost do not depend on the driving amplitude, in the case of the strong diving their positions are strongly amplitude-dependent. We study these resonances in the concrete system -- the strongly driven phase-biased Cooper-pair box, which is considered to be weakly coupled to the tank circuit.

Multiphoton transitions between energy levels in a phase-biased Cooper-pair box

We investigated both theoretically and experimentally dynamic features of a phase-biased charge qubit consisting of a single-Cooper-pair transistor closed by a superconducting loop. The effective inductance of the qubit was probed by a high-quality tank circuit. In the presence of a microwave power, with a frequency of the order of the qubit energy level separation, an alteration of the qubit inductance was observed. We demonstrate that this effect is caused by the redistribution of the qubit level population. The excitation of the qubit by one-, two-, and three-photon processes was detected. Quantitative agreement between theory and experimental data was found.

Laser Scanning Microscopy of HTS Films and Devices

The work describes the capabilities of Laser Scanning Microscopy (LSM) as a spatially resolved method of testing high_Tc materials and devices. The earlier results obtained by the authors are briefly reviewed. Some novel applications of the LSM are illustrated, including imaging the HTS responses in rf mode, probing the superconducting properties of HTS single crystals, development of twobeam laser scanning microscopy. The existence of the phase slip lines mechanism of resistivity in HTS materials is proven by LSM imaging.

Vortex-like current states in Josephson ballistic point contacts

The stationary Josephson effect is studied theoretically in the situation when there is externally injected transport supercurrent which flows in the banks parallel to the contact interface. Coexistence of this supercurrent with the order parameter phase difference between the banks of the contact results in the appearance of quasiparticles in the weak link, which create the current, localized in the vicinity of the contact and counter-flowing to the transport supercurrent. We review the results of our previous study of weak links between current-carrying conventional and unconventional (d-wave) superconductors. And further we study the weak link in the form of double point contact between current-carrying superconductors. The current distribution patterns, containing the vortex-like states, are obtained.

Magnetic relaxation of superconducting YBCO samples in weak magnetic fields

For the first time, magnetization of high-Tc samples with different crystalline structure and its isothermal relaxation is studied at very weak constant fields (H <= 0.1 Oe) for temperatures close to the critical ones. Essential influence of twin boundaries in YBCO single crystals on magnetic relaxation rate is shown. An estimation of effective pinning potential is made in the framework of the collective pinning model.

Method to determine defect positions below a metal surface by STM

The oscillatory voltage dependence of the conductance of a quantum point contact in the presence of a single point-like defect has been analyzed theoretically. Such signals are detectable and may be exploited to obtain information on defect positions below a metal surface. Both tunnel junctions and ballistic contacts of adiabatic shape have been considered. The effect of quantum interference has been taking into account between the principal wave that is directly transmitted through the contact and the partial wave that is scattered by the contact and the defect. This effect leads to oscillations of the conductance as a function of applied voltage. We obtain the dependence of the period and amplitude of the conductance oscillations on the position of the defect inside the metal.

Dynamic behaviour of Josephson-junction qubits: crossover between Rabi oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions

We study the dynamic behaviour of a quantum two-level system with periodically varying parameters by solving the master equation for the density matrix. Two limiting cases are considered: multiphoton Rabi oscillations and Landau-Zener transitions. The approach is applied to the description of the dynamics of superconducting qubits. In particular, the case of the interferometer-type charge qubit with periodically varying parameters (gate voltage or magnetic flux) is investigated. The time-averaged energy level populations are calculated as funtions of the qubit's control parameters.

Selective Amplification of a Quantum State

We predict a novel effect in a quantum two-level system (TLS) coupled to a resonant cavity. By bringing the TLS in and out of resonance with the cavity by a series of $N$ rectangular bias pulses (the length of the $m$th pulse scaling as $1/\sqrt{m}$), we will coherently excite the $N$-photon state, $|N,$ of the cavity only if the TLS was initially in an appropriate quantum state ("go" state). Otherwise the number of photons in the cavity will remain small compared to $N$ ({\em selective amplification}). If the TLS was in a coherent superposition of the "go" and "no go" states, the cavity will be in a superposition of states, in which the state $|N$ will enter with the same weight as the initial "go" component. The effect is due to $\sqrt{N+1}$-dependence of the Rabi oscillation frequency on the number $N$ of photons in the cavity. It is stable with respect to noise, pulse shape, finite temperature, TLS decoherence and TLS detuning from resonance with the cavity. The effect can be used as a means to read out a quantum state of a qubit coupled to a resonator.

Wigner distribution function formalism for superconductors and collisionless dynamics of the superconducting order parameter

A technique to study collisionless dynamics of a homogeneous superconducting system is developed, which is based on Riccati parametrization of Wigner distribution function. The quantum evolution of the superconductiung order parameter, initially deviated from the equilibrium value, is calculated using this technique. The effect of a time-dependent BCS paring interaction on the dynamics of the order parameter is also studied.

Josephson and spontaneous currents at the interface between two d-wave superconductors with transport current in the banks

A stationary Josephson effect in the ballistic contact of two d-wave superconductors with different axes orientation and with tangential transport current in the banks is considered theoretically. We study the influence of the transport current on the current-phase dependence for the Josephson and tangential currents at the interface. It is demonstrated that the spontaneous surface current at the interface depends on the transport current in the banks due to the interference of the angle-dependent current-carrying condensate wave functions of the two superconductors.

Nonlocal mixing of supercurrents in Josephson ballistic point contact

We study coherent current states in the mesoscopic superconducting weak link simultaneously subjected to the order parameter phase difference on the contact and to the tangential to the junction interface superfluid velocity in the banks. The Josephson current-phase relation controlled by the external transport current is obtained. At phase difference close to pi the nonlocal nature of the Josephson phase-dependent current results in the appearance of two vortexlike states in the vicinity of the contact.

d+is vs d+id' Time Reversal Symmetry Breaking States in Finite Size Systems

We report self-consistent quasiclassical calculations of spontaneous currents and magnetic moments in finite size unconventional superconducting systems, namely: (i) in isolated d-wave superconductor islands where, in addition to the dominant order parameter (with a d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry), a subdominant order parameter of s or d_{xy} symmetry is added; (ii) in grain boundary junctions between two arbitrarily oriented d-wave superconductors, and between a d-wave and an s-wave superconductor. We show that the profile of the spontaneous current density and the magnetic field distribution depend on the time-reversal symmetry breaking properties of the system. For the d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} state, vortices appear near the edges of the finite size systems. We associate these vortices with the chiral nature of the mixed order parameter. The method developed here is quite general, and can be used for predicting properties of any finite size superconducting system.
