Quasiclassical calculation of spontaneous current in restricted geometries

Calculation of current and order parameter distribution in inhomogeneous superconductors is often based on a self-consistent solution of Eilenberger equations for quasiclassical Green's functions. Compared to the original Gorkov equations, the problem is much simplified due to the fact that the values of Green's functions at a given point are connected to the bulk ones at infinity (boundary values) by ``dragging'' along the classical trajectories of quasiparticles. In finite size systems, where classical trajectories undergo multiple reflections from surfaces and interfaces, the usefulness of the approach is no longer obvious, since there is no simple criterion to determine what boundary value a trajectory corresponds to, and whether it reaches infinity at all. Here, we demonstrate the modification of the approach based on the Schophol-Maki transformation, which provides the basis for stable numerical calculations in 2D. We apply it to two examples: generation of spontaneous currents and magnetic moments in isolated islands of d-wave superconductor with subdominant order-parameters s and d_{xy}, and in a grain boundary junction between two arbitrarily oriented d-wave superconductors. Both examples are relevant to the discussion of time-reversal symmetry breaking in unconventional superconductors, as well as for application in quantum computing.

Quasiclassical Theory of Spontaneous Currents at Surfaces and Interfaces of d-Wave Superconductors

We investigate the properties of spontaneous currents generated at surfaces and interfaces of d-wave superconductors using the self-consistent quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. The influence of the roughness and reflectivity of the boundaries on the spontaneous current are studied. We show that these have very different effects at the surfaces compared to the interfaces, which reflects the different nature of the time reversal symmetry breaking states in these two systems. We find a signature of the ``anomalous proximity effect'' at rough d-wave interfaces. We also show that the existence of a subdominant order parameter, which is necessary for time reversal symmetry breaking at the surface, suppresses the spontaneous current generation due to proximity effect at the interface between two superconductors. We associate orbital moments to the spontaneous currents to explain the ``superscreening'' effect, which seems to be present at all ideal d-wave surfaces and interfaces, where d_{xy} is the favorite subdominant symmetry.

Multi-Terminal Superconducting Phase Qubit

Mesoscopic multi-terminal Josephson junctions are novel devices that provide weak coupling between several bulk superconductors through a common normal layer. Because of the nonlocal coupling of the superconducting banks, a current flow between two of the terminals can induce a phase difference and/or current flow in the other terminals. This "phase dragging" effect is used in designing a new type of superconducting phase qubit, the basic element of a quantum computer. Time-reversal symmetry breaking can be achieved by inserting a pi-phase shifter into the flux loop. Logical operations are done by applying currents. This removes the necessity for local external magnetic fields to achieve bistability or controllable operations.

DC SQUID based on the mesoscopic multiterminal Josephson junction

A theory is offered for a novel device, mesoscopic four-terminal SQUID. The studied system consists of a mesoscopic four-terminal junction, one pair of terminals of which is incorporated in a superconducting ring and the other one is connected with a transport circuit. The nonlocal weak coupling between the terminals leads to effects of phase dragging and magnetic flux transfer. The behaviour of a four-terminal SQUID, controlled by the external parameters, the applied magnetic flux and the transport current is investigated. The critical current and the current voltage characteristics as functions of magnetic flux are calculated. In the nonlocal mesoscopic case they depend not only on the magnitude of the applied flux but also on its sign, allowing measurement of the direction of the external magnetic field.

Mesoscopic multiterminal Josephson structures: I. Effects of nonlocal weak coupling

We investigate nonlocal coherent transport in ballistic four-terminal Josephson structures (where bulk superconductors (terminals) are connected through a clean normal layer, e.g., a two-dimensional electron gas). Coherent anisotropic superposition of macroscopic wave functions of the superconductors in the normal region produces phase slip lines (2D analogs to phase slip centres) and time-reversal symmetry breaking 2D vortex states in it, as well as such effects as phase dragging and magnetic flux transfer. The tunneling density of local Andreev states in the normal layer was shown to contain peaks at the positions controlled by the phase differences between the terminals. We have obtained general dependence of these effects on the controlling supercurrent/phase differences between the terminals of the ballistic mesoscopic four-terminal SQUID.

Degenerate ground state in a mesoscopic YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junction

We have measured the current-phase relationship (CPR) of symmetric 45 degree YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junctions. Substantial deviations of the CPR from conventional tunnel-junction behavior have been observed: (i) The critical current exhibits, as a function of temperature T, a local minimum at a temperature T*. (ii) At T approximately equal to T*, the first harmonic of the CPR changes sign. (iii) For T<T*, the second harmonic of the CPR is comparable to the first harmonic, and (iv) the ground state of the junction becomes degenerate. The results are in good agreement with a microscopic model of Josephson junctions between d-wave superconductors.

Mechanisms of Spontaneous Current Generation in an Inhomogeneous d-Wave Superconductor

A boundary between two d-wave superconductors or an s-wave and a d-wave superconductor generally breaks time-reversal symmetry and can generate spontaneous currents due to proximity effect. On the other hand, surfaces and interfaces in d-wave superconductors can produce localized current-carrying states by supporting the T-breaking combination of dominant and subdominant order parameters. We investigate spontaneous currents in the presence of both mechanisms and show that at low temperature, counter-intuitively, the subdominant coupling decreases the amplitude of the spontaneous current due to proximity effect. Superscreening of spontaneous currents is demonstrated to be present in any d-d (but not s-d) junction and surface with d+id' order parameter symmetry. We show that this supercreening is the result of contributions from the local magnetic moment of the condensate to the spontaneous current.

The influence of single magnetic impurities on the conductance of quantum microconstrictions

The nonlinear ballistic conductance of three-dimensional quantum microconstrictions, which contain magnetic impurities, is investigated. The nonlinear part of the conductance, which is due to the interaction of electrons with magnetic impurities is obtained. The analytical results have been analyzed numerically. It is shown that intensity of the Kondo anomaly in the conductance as the function of the applied voltage depends on the diameter of the constriction and the positions of impurities.

Effect of quantum interference in the nonlinear conductance of microconstrictions

The influence of the interference of electron waves, which were scattered by single impurities, on nonlinear quantum conductance of metallic microconstrictions (as was recently investigated experimentally) is studied theoretically. The dependence of the interference pattern in the conductance $G(V)$ on the contact diameter and the spatial distribution of impurities is analyzed. It is shown that the amplitude of conductance oscillation is strongly depended on the position of impurities inside the constriction.

Ballistic Four-Terminal Josephson Junction: Bistable States and Magnetic Flux Transfer

The macroscopic quantum interference effects in ballistic Josephson microstructures are investigated. The studied system consists of four bulk superconductors (terminals) which are weakly coupled through the mesoscopic rectangular normal metal (two dimensional electron gas). We show that nonlocal electrodynamics of ballistic systems leads to specific current-phase relations for the mesoscopic multiterminal Josephson junction. The nonlocal coupling of supercurrents produces the "dragging" effect for phases of the superconducting order parameter in different terminals. The composite Josephson junction, based on this effect, exhibits the two -level system behaviour controlled by the external magnetic flux. The effect of magnetic flux transfer in a system of nonlocally coupled superconducting rings is studied.

On the Selfconsistent Theory of Josephson Effect in Ballistic Superconducting Microconstrictions

The microscopic theory of current carrying states in the ballistic superconducting microchannel is presented. The effects of the contact length L on the Josephson current are investigated. For the temperatures T close to the critical temperature T_c the problem is treated selfconsistently, with taking into account the distribution of the order parameter $Δ(r)$ inside the contact. The closed integral equation for $Δ$ in strongly inhomogeneous microcontact geometry ($L\lesssim ξ_{0}, ξ_{0}$ is the coherence length at T=0) replaces the differential Ginzburg-Landau equation. The critical current $I_{c}(L)$ is expressed in terms of solution of this integral equation. The limiting cases of $L\ll ξ_{0}$ and $L\gg ξ_{0}$ are considered. With increasing length L the critical current decreases, although the ballistic Sharvin resistance of the contact remains the same as at L=0. For ultra short channels with $L\lesssim a_{D}$ ($a_{D}\sim v_{F}/ω_{D}, ω_{D}$ is the Debye frequency) the corrections to the value of critical current I_c(L=0) are sensitive to the strong coupling effects.

Coherent current states in mesoscopic four-terminal Josephson junction

A theory is offered for the ballistic 4-terminal Josephson junction. The studied system consists of a mesoscopic two-dimensional normal rectangular layer which is attached in each side to the bulk superconducting banks (terminals). The relation between the currents through the different terminals, which is valid for arbitrary temperatures and junction sizes, is obtained. The nonlocal coupling of the supercurrents leads to a new effect, specific for the mesoscopic weak link between two superconducting rings; an applied magnetic flux through one of the rings produces a magnetic flux in the other ring even in the absence of an external flux through the other one. The phase dependent distributions of the local density of Andreev states, of the supercurrents and of the induced order parameter are obtained. The "interference pattern" for the anomalous average inside the two dimensional region can be regulated by the applied magnetic fluxes or the transport currents. For some values of the phase differences between the terminals, the current vortex state and the two dimensional phase slip center are appeared.

Magnetic flux locking in two weakly coupled superconducting rings

We have analyzed the quantum interference effects in the macroscopic ''superconducting molecule''. The composite system consists of two massive superconducting rings, each interrupted by a Josephson junction, which are at the same time weakly coupled with one another. The special case of coupling via the Josephson four-terminal junction is considered. The structure of the macroscopic quantum states in an applied magnetic field is calculated. It is shown, that depending on the values of the magnetic fluxes through each ring, the system displays two groups of states, the ''orthostates'' with both induced currents going in the same direction, and the ''parastates'' with the opposite currents and with the total induced flux locked to zero value. The transition to the flux locked state with changing of the total applied flux is sudden and is preserved in a certain interval which is determined by the difference of the fluxes applied through each ring. It makes the system sensitive to small gradients of the external magnetic field.

Four-terminal SQUID: Magnetic Flux Switching in Bistable State and Noise

The effect of thermal fluctuations on the behaviuor of a 4-terminal SQUID is investigated. The studied system consists of the Josephson 4-terminal junction with two terminals short-circuited by a superconducting ring and other two form the transport circuit. The behaviour of a 4-terminal SQUID is controlled by external parameters, the applied magnetic flux and the transport current. They determine the voltage in the transport channel and the magnetic flux embraced in the ring. Within the numerical model the noise-rounded current-voltage characteristics and the time dependence of the magnetic flux have been calculated. In some region of the control parameters the 4-terminal SQUID is in the bistable state with two magnetic flux values. The switching of the flux in bistable state produced by the thermal noise or by the transport current is studied.
