Emergence of hyperons in failed supernovae: trigger of the black hole formation

We investigate the emergence of strange baryons in the dynamical collapse of a non-rotating massive star to a black hole by the neutrino-radiation hydrodynamical simulations in general relativity. By following the dynamical formation and collapse of nascent proto-neutron star from the gravitational collapse of a 40Msun star adopting a new hyperonic EOS table, we show that the hyperons do not appear at the core bounce but populate quickly at ~0.5-0.7 s after the bounce to trigger the re-collapse to a black hole. They start to show up off center owing to high temperatures and later prevail at center when the central density becomes high enough. The neutrino emission from the accreting proto-neutron star with the hyperonic EOS stops much earlier than the corresponding case with a nucleonic EOS while the average energies and luminosities are quite similar between them. These features of neutrino signal are a potential probe of the emergence of new degrees of freedom inside the black hole forming collapse.

Tables of Hyperonic Matter Equation of State for Core-Collapse Supernovae

We present sets of equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter including hyperons using an SU_f(3) extended relativistic mean field (RMF) model with a wide coverage of density, temperature, and charge fraction for numerical simulations of core collapse supernovae. Coupling constants of Sigma and Xi hyperons with the sigma meson are determined to fit the hyperon potential depths in nuclear matter, U_Sigma(rho_0) ~ +30 MeV and U_Xi(rho_0) ~ -15 MeV, which are suggested from recent analyses of hyperon production reactions. At low densities, the EOS of uniform matter is connected with the EOS by Shen et al., in which formation of finite nuclei is included in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In the present EOS, the maximum mass of neutron stars decreases from 2.17 M_sun (Ne mu) to 1.63 M_sun (NYe mu) when hyperons are included. In a spherical, adiabatic collapse of a 15$M_\odot$ star by the hydrodynamics without neutrino transfer, hyperon effects are found to be small, since the temperature and density do not reach the region of hyperon mixture, where the hyperon fraction is above 1 % (T > 40 MeV or rho_B > 0.4 fm^{-3}).

Search for a Ridge Structure Origin with Shower Broadening and Jet Quenching

We investigate the role of jet and shower parton broadening by the strong colour field in the $Δη$-$Δϕ$ correlation of high $p_T$ particles. When anisotropic momentum broadening ($Δp_z > Δp_T$) is given to jet and shower partons in the initial stage, a ridge-like structure is found to appear in the two hadron correlation. The ratio of the peak to the pedestal yield is overestimated.

Brown-Rho Scaling in the Strong Coupling Lattice QCD

We examine the Brown-Rho scaling for meson masses in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD with one species of staggered fermion. Analytical expression of meson masses is derived at finite temperature and chemical potential. We find that meson masses are approximately proportional to the equilibrium value of the chiral condensate, which evolves as a function of temperature and chemical potential.

The Infrared Astronomical Mission AKARI

AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. These will become an additional future heritage of this mission.

Strong coupling limit/region of lattice QCD

We study the phase diagram of quark matter and nuclear properties based on the strong coupling expansion of lattice QCD. Both of baryon and finite coupling correction are found to have effects to extend the hadron phase to a larger mu direction relative to Tc. In a chiral RMF model with logarithmic sigma potential derived in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD, we can avoid the chiral collapse and normal and hypernuclei properties are well described.

Jet-fluid string formation and decay in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We propose a new hadronization mechanism, jet-fluid string (JFS) formation and decay, to understand observables in intermediate to high-$p_{T}$ regions comprehensively. In the JFS model, hard partons produced in jet lose their energy in traversing the QGP fluid, which is described by fully three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations. When a jet parton escapes from the QGP fluid, it picks up a partner parton from a fluid and forms a color singlet string, then it decays to hadrons. We find that high-$p_T$ $v_2$ values in JFS are about two times larger than in the independent fragmentation model.

Phase diagram at finite temperature and quark density in the strong coupling region of lattice QCD for color SU(3)

We study the phase diagram of quark matter at finite temperature (T) and chemical potential (mu) in the strong coupling region of lattice QCD for color SU(3). Baryon has effects to extend the hadron phase to a larger mu direction relative to Tc at low temperatures in the strong coupling limit. With the 1/g^2 corrections, Tc is found to decrease rapidly as g decreases, and the shape of the phase diagram becomes closer to that expected in the real world.

Phase diagram at finite temperature and quark density in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD for color SU(3)

We study the phase diagram of quark matter at finite temperature (T) and finite chemical potential (mu) in the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD for color SU(3). We derive an analytical expression of the effective free energy as a function of T and mu, including baryon effects. The finite temperature effects are evaluated by integrating over the temporal link variable exactly in the Polyakov gauge with anti-periodic boundary condition for fermions. The obtained phase diagram shows the first order phase transition at low temperatures and the second order phase transition at high temperatures separated by the tri-critical point in the chiral limit. Baryon has effects to reduce the effective free energy and to extend the hadron phase to a larger mu direction at low temperatures.

Existence of Density Functionals for Excited States and Resonances

We show how every bound state of a finite system of identical fermions, whether a ground state or an excited one, defines a density functional. Degeneracies created by a symmetry group can be trivially lifted by a pseudo-Zeeman effect. When complex scaling can be used to regularize a resonance into a square integrable state, a DF also exists.

Hadron-string cascade versus hydrodynamics in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV

Single particle spectra as well as elliptic flow in Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are investigated within a hadronic cascade model and an ideal hydrodynamic model. Pseudorapidity distribution and transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons are surprisingly comparable between these two models. However, a large deviation is predicted for the elliptic flow. The forthcoming experimental data will clarify the transport and thermalization aspects of matter produced in Cu+Cu collisions.

Mean-Field Effects on Collective Flows in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions at 2-158A GeV energies

Collective flows in heavy-ion collisions from AGS ($(2-11)A$ GeV) to SPS ($(40,158)A$ GeV) energies are investigated in a nonequilibrium transport model with nuclear mean-field (MF). Sideward $ $, directed $v_1$, and elliptic flows $v_2$ are systematically studied with different assumptions on the nuclear equation of state (EOS). We find that momentum dependence in the nuclear MF is important for the understanding of the proton collective flows at AGS and SPS energies. Calculated results with momentum dependent MF qualitatively reproduce the experimental data of proton sideward, directed, and elliptic flows in a incident energy range of $(2-158)A$ GeV.

Complex Scaled Spectrum Completeness for Coupled Channels

The Complex Scaling Method (CSM) provides scattering wave functions which regularize resonances and suggest a resolution of the identity in terms of such resonances, completed by the bound states and a smoothed continuum. But, in the case of inelastic scattering with many channels, the existence of such a resolution under complex scaling is still debated. Taking advantage of results obtained earlier for the two channel case, this paper proposes a representation in which the convergence of a resolution of the identity can be more easily tested. The representation is valid for any finite number of coupled channels for inelastic scattering without rearrangement.

Liquid-Gas Phase Transition of Supernova Matter and Its Relation to Nucleosynthesis

We investigate the liquid-gas phase transition of dense matter in supernova explosion by the relativistic mean field approach and fragment based statistical model. The boiling temperature is found to be high (T_{boil} >= 0.7 MeV for rho_B >= 10^{-7} fm^{-3}), and adiabatic paths are shown to go across the boundary of coexisting region even with high entropy. This suggests that materials experienced phase transition can be ejected to outside. We calculated fragment mass and isotope distribution around the boiling point. We found that heavy elements at the iron, the first, second, and third peaks of r-process are abundantly formed at rho_B = 10^{-7}, 10^{-5}, 10^{-3} and 10^{-2} fm^{-3}, respectively.

Systematic Study of Elliptic Flow at RHIC Energy

We study the elliptic flow systematically from SIS to RHIC energies in a realistic dynamical cascade model. We compile our results with the recent data from STAR and PHOBOS experiments on elliptic flow of charged particles in Au + Au collisions at RHIC energy. From the analysis of elliptic flow as a function of different dynamical variables such as transverse momenta, pseudorapidity and centrality at RHIC energy, we found a good fitting with data at 1.5 times a scaling factor to our simulation model, which characterizes that the model is required to have extra pressure generated from the subsequent parton scatterings. In energy dependence of elliptic flow, we observe a re-hardening nature at RHIC energies, which may probably signal the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma.

Sideward Peak of Intermediate Mass Fragments in High Energy Proton Induced Reactions

Intermediate mass fragment (IMF) formation in the 12 GeV proton induced reaction on Au target is analyzed by using a combined framework of a transport model (JAM/MF) and a newly developed non-equilibrium percolation (NEP) model. In this model, we can well reproduce the mass distribution of fragments. In addition, the sideward peaked angular distribution would emerge under the condition that the fragment formation time is very short, around 20 fm/c. Within this short time period, the un-heated part of the residual nucleus is kept to have doughnut shape, then the Coulomb repulsion from this shape strengthens the sideward peak of IMF.

Re-Hardening of Hadron Transverse Mass Spectra in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We analyze the spectra of pions and protons in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies from 2 A GeV to 65+65 A GeV by using a jet-implemented hadron-string cascade model. In this energy region, hadron transverse mass spectra first show softening until SPS energies, and re-hardening may emerge at RHIC energies. Since hadronic matter is expected to show only softening at higher energy densities, this re-hardening of spectra can be interpreted as a good signature of the quark-gluon plasma formation.

SU(2) Chiral sigma model and the properties of neutron stars

We discuss the {\it SU}(2) chiral sigma model in the context of nuclear matter using a mean field approach at high density. In this model we include a dynamically generated isoscalar vector field and higher-order terms in the scalar field. With the inclusion of these, we reproduce the empirical values of the nuclear matter saturation density, binding energy, and nuclear incompressibility. The value of the incompressibility is chosen according to recently obtained heavy-ion collision data. We then apply the same dynamical model to neutron-rich matter in beta equilibrium, related to neutron star structure. The maximum mass and corresponding radius of stable non-rotating neutron stars are found to be in the observational limit.
