Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas

These are the proceedings of the "Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas" held at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, February 9-11, 2011. The workshop explored in depth the determination of alphas(mZ) in the MS-bar scheme from the key categories where high precision measurements are currently being made, including DIS and global PDF fits, tau-decays, electroweak precision observables and Z-decays, event-shapes, and lattice QCD. These proceedings contain a short summary contribution from the speakers, as well as the lists of authors, conveners, participants, and talks.

Large-Nc Properties of the rho and f0(600) Mesons from Unitary Resonance Chiral Dynamics

We construct pi-pi amplitudes that fulfill exact elastic unitarity, account for one loop Chiral Perturbation Theory contributions and include all 1/Nc leading terms, with the only limitation of considering just the lowest-lying nonet of exchanged resonances. Within such scheme, the Nc dependence of sigma and rho masses and widths is discussed. Robust conclusions are drawn in the case of the rho resonance, confirming that it is a stable meson in the limit of a large number of QCD colors, Nc. Less definitive conclusions are reached in the scalar-isoscalar sector. With the present quality of data, we cannot firmly conclude whether or not the Nc=3 f0(600) resonance completely disappears at large Nc or it has a sub-dominant component in its structure, which would become dominant for a number of quark colors sufficiently large.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Hadron structure in tau -> KKpi nu_tau decays

We analyse the hadronization structure of both vector and axial-vector currents leading to tau -> KKpi nu_tau decays. At leading order in the 1/Nc expansion, and considering only the contribution of the lightest resonances, we work out, within the framework of the resonance chiral Lagrangian, the structure of the local vertices involved in those processes. The couplings in the resonance theory are constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of vector and axial-vector spectral functions ruled by QCD. In this way we predict the hadron spectra and conclude that, contrarily to previous assertions, the vector contribution dominates by far over the axial-vector one in all KKpi charge channels.

tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau decays and the a_1(1260) off-shell width revisited

The tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large-Nc expansion, this process has been studied in Ref.[1]. In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a_1 resonance that provides a good description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the rho(1450) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu_tau process in excellent agreement with our present experimental knowledge.

Chiral low-energy constants from tau data

We analyze how the recent precise hadronic tau-decay data on the V-A spectral function and general properties of QCD such as analyticity, the operator product expansion and chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), can be used to improve the knowledge of some of the low-energy constants of ChPT. In particular we find the most precise values of L_{9,10} (or equivalently l_{5,6}) at order p^4 and p^6 and the first phenomenological determination of C_87 (c_50).

Reanalysis of pion pion phase shifts from K -> pi pi decays

We re-investigate the impact of isospin violation for extracting the s-wave pion pion scattering phase shift difference delta_0(M_K) - delta_2(M_K) from K -> pi pi decays. Compared to our previous analysis in 2003, more precise experimental data and improved knowledge of low-energy constants are used. In addition, we employ a more robust data-driven method to obtain the phase shift difference delta_0(M_K) - delta_2(M_K) = (52.5 \pm 0.8_{exp} \pm 2.8_{theor}) degrees.

From hadronic tau decays to the chiral couplings L_10 and C_87

A sum rule analysis of the hadronic tau-decay data can be used to determine the low-energy constants L10(mu) and C87(mu). These constants are QCD chiral-order parameters, which appear at order p^4 and p^6, respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V-A correlator. At order p^4 we obtain L10(M_rho) = -(5.22\pm 0.06)10^-3. Including in the analysis the order p^6 contributions, we get L10(M_rho) = -(4.06\pm 0.39)10^-3 and C87(M_rho) = (4.89\pm 0.19)10^-3 GeV^-2.

Recent Progress on Tau Lepton Physics

Some important aspects of hadronic tau decays are reviewed: the determination of alpha_s from the inclusive tau hadronic width, the measurement of |V_{us}| through the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the tau, and the theoretical description of the tau -> nu_tau K pi spectrum. The present status of other relevant electroweak topics, such as charged-current universality tests or bounds on lepton-flavour violation, has been already summarized in a previous review.

Form-factors and current correlators: chiral couplings L_10(mu) and C_87(mu) at NLO in 1/N(C)

Using the resonance chiral theory Lagrangian, we perform a calculation of the vector and axial-vector two-point functions at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in the 1/N(C) expansion. We have analyzed these correlators within the single-resonance approximation and have also investigated the corrections induced by a second multiplet of vector and axial-vector resonance states. Imposing the correct QCD short-distance constraints, one determines the difference of the two correlators Pi(t) = Pi_VV(t)- Pi_AA(t) in terms of the pion decay constant and resonance masses. Its low momentum expansion fixes then the low-energy chiral couplings L_10 and C_87 at NLO, keeping full control of their renormalization scale dependence. At mu_0=0.77 GeV, we obtain L_10(mu_0) = (-4.4 \pm 0.9)10^{-3} and C_87^r(mu_0)=(3.1 \pm 1.1)10^{-5}.

Towards a determination of the chiral couplings at NLO in 1/N(C): L_8(mu) and C_38(mu)

We present a dispersive method which allows to investigate the low-energy couplings of chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in the 1/N(C) expansion, keeping full control of their renormalization scale dependence. Using the resonance chiral theory Lagrangian, we perform a NLO calculation of the scalar and pseudoscalar two-point functions, within the single-resonance approximation. Imposing the correct QCD short-distance constraints, one determines their difference Pi(t)=Pi_S(t)-Pi_P(t) in terms of the pion decay constant and resonance masses. Its low momentum expansion fixes then the low-energy chiral couplings L_8 and C_38. At mu_0=0.77 GeV, we obtain L_8(mu_0)^{SU(3)} = (0.6+-0.4)10^{-3} and C_{38}(mu_0)^{SU(3)}=(2+-6)10^{-6}.

Scalar K pi form factor and light quark masses

Recent experimental improvements on K-decay data allow for a precise extraction of the strangeness-changing scalar K pi form factor and the related strange scalar spectral function. On the basis of this scalar as well as the corresponding pseudoscalar spectral function, the strange quark mass is determined to be m_s(2 GeV) = 92 +- 9 MeV. Further taking into account chiral perturbation theory mass ratios, the light up and down quark masses turn out to be m_u(2 GeV) = 2.7 +- 0.4 MeV as well as m_d(2 GeV) = 4.8 +- 0.5 MeV. As a by-product, we also find a value for the Cabibbo angle |V_{us}| = 0.2236(29) and the ratio of meson decay constants F_K/F_π= 1.203(16). Performing a global average of the strange mass by including extractions from other channels as well as lattice QCD results yields m_s(2 GeV) = 94 +- 6 MeV.

Towards a consistent estimate of the chiral low-energy constants

Guided by the large-Nc limit of QCD, we construct the most general chiral resonance Lagrangian that can generate chiral low-energy constants up to O(p^6). By integrating out the resonance fields, the low-energy constants are parametrized in terms of resonance masses and couplings. Information on those couplings and on the low-energy constants can be extracted by analysing QCD Green functions of currents both for large and small momenta. The chiral resonance theory generates Green functions that interpolate between QCD and chiral perturbation theory. As specific examples we consider the VAP and SPP Green functions.

Spectral distribution for the decay tau -> nu_tau K pi

With the newly available data sets on hadronic tau decays from the B-factories BABAR and BELLE, and future data from BESIII, precise information on the decay distributions will soon become available. This calls for an improvement of the decay spectra also on the theoretical side. In this work, the distribution function for the decay tau -> nu_tau K pi will be presented with the relevant K pi vector and scalar form factors being calculated in the framework of the resonance chiral theory, also taking into account additional constraints from dispersion relations and short-distances. As a by-product the slope and curvature of the vector form factor F_+^{K pi}(s) are determined to be lambda_+^' = 25.6 10^{-3} and lambda_+^{''} = 1.31 10^{-3} respectively. From our approach it appears that it should be possible to obtain information on the low lying scalar K_0^*(800) as well as the second vector K^*(1410) resonances from the tau decay data. In particular, the exclusive branching fraction of the scalar component is found to be B[tau -> nu_tau(K pi)_{S-wave}] = (3.88 +- 0.19) 10^{-4}.

V(us) Determination from Hyperon Semileptonic Decays

We analyze the numerical determination of the quark mixing factor V(us) from hyperon semileptonic decays. The discrepancies between the results obtained in two previous studies are clarified. Our fits indicate sizeable SU(3) breaking corrections, which unfortunately can only be fully determined from the data at the first order. The lack of a reliable theoretical calculation of second-order symmetry breaking effects translates into a large systematic uncertainty, which has not been taken into account previously. Our final result, V(us) = 0.226 +/- 0.005, is not competitive with the existing determinations from K(l3), K(l2) and τdecays.
