Hadronic decays of the tau lepton: tau -> (3 pion) nu_tau within Resonance Chiral Theory

Tau decays into hadrons foresee the study of the hadronization of vector and axial-vector QCD currents, yielding relevant information on the dynamics of the resonances entering into the processes. We analyse tau -> (3 pion) nu_tau decays within the framework of the Resonance Chiral Theory, comparing this theoretical scheme with the experimental data, namely ALEPH spectral function and branching ratio. Hence we get values for the mass and on-shell width of the a_1(1260) resonance, and provide the structure functions that have been measured by OPAL and CLEO-II.

Determination of |V_us| from hadronic tau decays

The recent update of the strange spectral function and the moments of the invariant mass distribution by the OPAL collaboration from hadronic tau decay data are employed to determine |V_us| as well as m_s. Our result, |V_us|=0.2208\pm0.0034, is competitive to the standard extraction of |V_us| from K_e3 decays and to the new proposals to determine it. Furthermore, the error associated to our determination of |V_us| can be reduced in the future since it is dominated by the experimental uncertainty that will be eventually much improved by the B-factories hadronic tau data. Another improvement that can be performed is the simultaneous fit of both |V_us| and m_s to a set of moments of the hadronic tau decays invariant mass distribution, which will provide even a more accurate determination of both parameters.

The < S P P > Green function and SU(3) breaking in K_{l3} decays

Using the 1/N_C expansion scheme and truncating the hadronic spectrum to the lowest-lying resonances, we match a meromorphic approximation to the < S P P > Green function onto QCD by imposing the correct large-momentum falloff, both off-shell and on the relevant hadron mass shells. In this way we determine a number of chiral low-energy constants of O(p^6), in particular the ones governing SU(3) breaking in the K_{l3} vector form factor at zero momentum transfer. The main result of our matching procedure is that the known loop contributions largely dominate the corrections of O(p^6) to f_{+}(0). We discuss the implications of our final value f_{+}^{K^0 π^-}(0)=0.984 \pm 0.012 for the extraction of V_{us} from K_{l3} decays.

The Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions

Gauge invariance is a powerful tool to determine the dynamics of the electroweak and strong forces. The particle content, structure and symmetries of the Standard Model Lagrangian are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the many phenomenological tests which have established this theoretical framework as the Standard Theory of electroweak interactions.

Present Status of Chiral Perturbation Theory

The basic ideas and methods of chiral perturbation theory are briefly reviewed. I discuss the recent attempts to build an effective Lagrangian in the resonance region and summarize the known large-N_C constraints on the low-energy chiral couplings.

Epsilon'/Epsilon in the Standard Model: Theoretical Update

A complete analysis of isospin breaking in K to 2 pion amplitudes, including both strong and electromagnetic corrections at next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, has been achieved recently. We discuss the implication of these effects, together with the previously known chiral loop corrections, on the direct CP-violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon. One finds Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (19^{+11}_{-9}) 10^{-4}.

V_us and m_s from hadronic tau decays

Recent experimental results on hadronic tau decays into strange particles by the OPAL collaboration are employed to determine V_us and m_s from moments of the invariant mass distribution. Our results are V_us = 0.2208+-0.0034 and m_s(2 GeV) = 81+-22 MeV. The error on V_us is dominated by experiment, and should be improvable in the future. Nevertheless, already now our result is competitive to the standard extraction of V_us from K_e3 decays, and it is compatible with unitarity.

Green Function in the Resonance Region

We analyse the three-point function of vector, axial-vector and pseudoscalar currents. In the spirit of large N_C, a resonance dominated Green function is confronted with the leading high-energy behaviour from the operator product expansion. The matching is shown to be fully compatible with a chiral resonance Lagrangian and it allows to determine some of the chiral low-energy constants of O(p^6).

Quantum Loops in the Resonance Chiral Theory: The Vector Form Factor

We present a calculation of the Vector Form Factor at the next-to-leading order in the 1/N_C expansion, within the framework of Resonance Chiral Theory. The calculation is performed in the chiral limit, and with two dynamical quark flavours. The ultraviolet behaviour of quantum loops involving virtual resonance propagators is analyzed, together with the kind of counterterms needed in the renormalization procedure. Using the lowest-order equations of motion, we show that only a few combinations of local couplings appear in the final result. The low-energy limit of our calculation reproduces the standard Chiral Perturbation Theory formula, allowing us to determine the resonance contribution to the chiral low-energy couplings, at the next-to-leading order in 1/N_C, keeping a full control of their renormalization scale dependence.

Chiral loop corrections and isospin violation effects in epsilon'/epsilon

A complete analysis of isospin breaking in $K\to 2π$ amplitudes, including both strong and electromagnetic corrections at next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory, has been achieved recently. We discuss the implication of these effects, together with the previously known chiral loop corrections, on the direct CP-violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon.

Isospin Breaking in K -> Pi Pi Decays

We perform a complete analysis of isospin breaking in K -> Pi Pi amplitudes in chiral perturbation theory, including both strong isospin violation and electromagnetic corrections to next-to-leading order in the low-energy expansion. The unknown chiral couplings are estimated at leading order in the 1/N_c expansion. We study the impact of isospin breaking on CP conserving amplitudes and rescattering phases. In particular, we extract the effective couplings g_8 and g_27 from a fit to K -> Pi Pi branching ratios, finding small deviations from the isospin-limit case. The ratio Re(A_0)/Re(A_2) measuring the Delta I=1/2 enhancement is found to decrese from 22.1 +/- 0.1 in the isospin limit to 20.3 +/- 0.5 in the presence of isospin breaking. We also analyse the effect of isospin violation on the CP violation parameter epsilon-prime, finding a destructive interference between three different sources of isospin violation. Within the uncertainties of large-N_c estimates for the low-energy constants, the isospin violating correction for epsilon-prime is below 15%.

tau -> (3 pions) nu_tau : Theory versus Experiment

We analyse tau -> (3 pions) nu_tau decays within the framework of the resonance chiral theory of QCD. We have worked out the relevant Lagrangian that describes the axial-vector current hadronization contributing to these processes, and the new coupling constants that arise have been constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding spectral function within QCD. Hence we compare the theoretical framework with the experimental data, obtaining a good quality fit from the ALEPH spectral function and branching ratio. We also get values for the mass and on-shell width of the a_1(1260) resonance, and provide the tau -> (3 pions) nu_tau structure functions that have been measured by OPAL and CLEO-II finding an excellent agreement.

tau -> (3 pions) nu_tau decays are analysed within the framework of the resonance effective theory of QCD. We work out the relevant Lagrangian that describes the axial-vector current hadronization contributing to these processes, in particular the local a_1(1260)-rho(770)-Goldstone interactions. The new coupling constants are constrained by imposing the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding spectral function within QCD. Rho Meson Properties

We study the mass, width and couplings of the lightest vector multiplet. Effective field theories based on chiral symmetry and a 1/N_C counting are adopted in order to describe the vector form factor associated to the two-pseudoscalar matrix element of the QCD vector current. The bare poles of the intermediate s-channel resonances are regularized through a Dyson-Schwinger-like summation. This procedure provides many interesting properties, as the pole mass M_rho{pole}= 764.1 +- 2.7 (^{+4.0}_{-2.5}) MeV and the chiral coupling L9^r(mu0)= (7.04 +- 0.05 (^{+0.19}_{-0.27}))* 10^{-3}, at mu0=770 MeV. We show how the running affects the resonance parameters and that mu is really unphysical, so saturation occurs at any scale.

Phenomenology of the Green's function within the Resonance Chiral Theory

We analyse the odd-intrinsic-parity effective Lagrangian of QCD valid for processes involving one pseudoscalar with two vector mesons described in terms of antisymmetric tensor fields. Substantial information on the odd-intrinsic-parity couplings is obtained by constructing the vector-vector-pseudoscalar Green's three-point function, at leading order in 1/N_C, and demanding that its short-distance behaviour matches the corresponding OPE result. The QCD constraints thus enforced allow us to predict the decay amplitude omega -> pi gamma, the O(p^6) corrections to pi -> gamma gamma and the slope parameter in pi -> gamma gamma^*.

Isospin violation in epsilon'

On the basis of a next-to-leading-order calculation in chiral perturbation theory, the first complete analysis of isospin breaking for direct CP violation in K^0 -> 2 pi decays is performed. We find a destructive interference between three different sources of isospin violation in the CP violation parameter epsilon'. Within the uncertainties of large-N_c estimates for the low-energy constants, the isospin violating correction for epsilon' is below 15 %.

Odd-intrinsic-parity processes within the Resonance Effective Theory of QCD

We analyse the most general odd-intrinsic-parity effective Lagrangian of QCD valid for processes involving one pseudoscalar with vector mesons described in terms of antisymmetric tensor fields. Substantial information on the odd-intrinsic-parity couplings is obtained by constructing the vector-vector-pseudoscalar Green's three-point function, at leading order in 1/Nc, and demanding that its short-distance behaviour matches the corresponding OPE result. The QCD constraints thus enforced allow us to predict the decay amplitude omega -> pion gamma, and the O(p^6) corrections to pion -> gamma gamma. Noteworthy consequences concerning the vector meson dominance assumption in the decay omega -> 3 pions are also extracted from the previous analysis.

Meson resonances, large N_c and chiral symmetry

We investigate the implications of large N_c and chiral symmetry for the mass spectra of meson resonances. Unlike for most other mesons, the mass matrix of the light scalars deviates strongly from its large-N_c limit. We discuss the possible assignments for the lightest scalar nonet that survives in the large-N_c limit.
