Tsallis' Statistics without probability distributions. REPLY to Comment on "Possible Divergences in Tsallis' Thermostatistics"

In a recent letter (EPL, 104 (2013) 60003) we suggested a way to avoid divergences inherent to the formulation of nonextensive statistical mechanics. They can be eliminated via the use of a q-Laplace transformation, which was illustrated for the case of the harmonic oscillator. Lutsko and Boon now contend, in an interesting comment, that our new formulation raises questions that they carefully discuss. Here we elaborate an explanation of the contents of (EPL, 104 (2013) 60003) that permits to appreciate our original Letter in a more positive fashion.

Generalizing entanglement via informational invariance for arbitrary statistical theories

Given an arbitrary statistical theory, different from quantum mechanics, how to decide which are the nonclassical correlations? We present a formal framework which allows for a definition of nonclassical correlations in such theories, alternative to the current one. This enables one to formulate extrapolations of some important quantum mechanical features via adequate extensions of reciprocal maps relating states of a system with states of its subsystems. These extended maps permit one to generalize i) separability measures to any arbitrary statistical model as well as ii) previous entanglement criteria. The standard definition of entanglement becomes just a particular case of the ensuing, more general notion.

Legendre transform structure and extremal properties of the relative Fisher information

Variational extremization of the relative Fisher information (RFI, hereafter) is performed. Reciprocity relations, akin to those of thermodynamics are derived, employing the extremal results of the RFI expressed in terms of probability amplitudes. A time independent Schrödinger-like equation (Schrödinger-like link) for the RFI is derived. The concomitant Legendre transform structure (LTS, hereafter) is developed by utilizing a generalized RFI-Euler theorem, which shows that the entire mathematical structure of thermodynamics translates into the RFI framework, both for equilibrium and non-equilibrium cases. The qualitatively distinct nature of the present results \textit{vis-á-vis} those of prior studies utilizing the Shannon entropy and/or the Fisher information measure (FIM, hereafter) is discussed. A principled relationship between the RFI and the FIM frameworks is derived. The utility of this relationship is demonstrated by an example wherein the energy eigenvalues of the Schrödinger-like link for the RFI is inferred solely using the quantum mechanical virial theorem and the LTS of the RFI.

Memory endowed US cities and their demographic interactions

A quantitative understanding of cities' demographic dynamics is becoming a potentially useful tool for planning sustainable growth. The concomitant theory should reveal details of the cities' past and also of its interaction with nearby urban conglomerates for providing a reasonably complete picture. Using the exhaustive database of the Census Bureau in a time window of 170 years, we exhibit here empirical evidence for time and space correlations in the demographic dynamics of US counties, with a characteristic memory-time of 25 years and typical distances of interaction of 200 km. These correlations are much larger than those observed in an European country (Spain), giving to the US a more coherent evolution. We also measure the resilience of US cities to historical events, finding a demographical post-traumatic amnesia after wars (as the Civil War) or economic crisis (as the 1929 Stock Market Crash).

3D Effects Of The Entropic Force

This work analyzes the classical statistical mechanics associated to phase-space curves in three dimensions. Special attention is paid to the entropic force. Strange effects like confinement, hard core, and asymptotic freedom are uncovered. Negative specific heats, that were previously seen to emerge in a one-dimensional setting, disappear in 3D, and with them, gravitational effects of the entropic force.

Statistical complexity measures as telltale of relevant scales in emergent dynamics of spatial systems

The definition of complexity through Statistical Complexity Measures (SCM) has recently seen major improvements. Mostly, effort is concentrated in measures on time series. We propose a SCM definition for spatial dynamical systems. Our definition is in line with the trend to combine entropy with measures of structure (such as disequilibrium). We study the behaviour of our definition against the vectorial noise model of Collective Motion. From a global perspective, we show how our SCM is minimal at both the microscale and macroscale, while it reaches a maximum at the ranges that define the mesoscale in this model. From a local perspective, the SCM is minimum both in highly ordered and chaotic areas, while it reaches a maximum at the edges between such areas. These characteristics suggest this is a good candidate for detecting the mesoscale of arbitrary dynamical systems as well as regions where the complexity is maximal in such systems.

Possible Divergences in Tsallis' Thermostatistics

Trying to compute the nonextensive q-partition function for the Harmonic Oscillator in more than two dimensions, one encounters that it diverges, which poses a serious threat to the whole of Tsallis' thermostatistics. Appeal to the so called q-Laplace Transform, where the q-exponential function plays the role of the ordinary exponential, is seen to save the day.

Reflections on the q-Fourier transform and the q-Gaussian function

We appeal to a complex q-Fourier transform as a generalization of the (real) one analyzed in [Milan J. Math. {\bf 76} (2008) 307]. By recourse to tempered ultra-distributions we are able to show that the q-Gaussian distribution can be nicely obtained, overcoming all troubles that afflict its real counterpart.

The Tsallis-Laplace Transform

We introduce here the q-Laplace transform as a new weapon in Tsallis' arsenal, discussing its main properties and analyzing some examples. The q-Gaussian instance receives special consideration. Also, we derive the q-partition function from the q-Laplace transform.

Space-time correlations in urban sprawl

Understanding demographic and migrational patterns constitutes a great challenge. Millions of individual decisions, motivated by economic, political, demographic, rational, and/or emotional reasons underlie the high complexity of demographic dynamics. Significant advances in quantitatively understanding such complexity have been registered in recent years, as those involving the growth of cities [Bettencourt LMA, Lobo J, Helbing D, Kuehnert C, West GB (2007) Growth,. Innovation, Scaling, and the Pace of Life in Cities, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104 (17) 7301-7306] but many fundamental issues still defy comprehension. We present here compelling empirical evidence of a high level of regularity regarding time and spatial correlations in urban sprawl, unraveling patterns about the inertia in the growth of cities and their interaction with each other. By using one of the world's most exhaustive extant demographic data basis ---that of the Spanish Government's Institute INE, with records covering 111 years and (in 2011) 45 million people, distributed amongst more than 8000 population nuclei--- we show that the inertia of city growth has a characteristic time of 15 years, and its interaction with the growth of other cities has a characteristic distance of 70 km. Distance is shown to be the main factor that entangles two cities (a 60% of total correlations). We present a mathematical model for population flows that i) reproduces all these regularities and ii) can be used to predict the population-evolution of cities. The power of our current social theories is thereby enhanced.

Statistical Mechanics of Phase-Space Curves

We study the classical statistical mechanics of a phase-space curve. This unveils a mechanism that, via the associated entropic force, provides us with a simple realization of effects such as confinement, hard core, and asymptotic freedom. Additionally, we obtain negative specific heats, a distinctive feature of self-gravitating systems and negative pressures, typical of dark energy.

Invertible mappings and the large deviation theory for the $q$-maximum entropy principle

The possibility of reconciliation between canonical probability distributions obtained from the $q$-maximum entropy principle with predictions from the law of large numbers when empirical samples are held to the same constraints, is investigated into. Canonical probability distributions are constrained by both: $(i)$ the additive duality of generalized statistics and $(ii)$ normal averages expectations. Necessary conditions to establish such a reconciliation are derived by appealing to a result concerning large deviation properties of conditional measures. The (dual) $q^*$-maximum entropy principle is shown {\bf not} to adhere to the large deviation theory. However, the necessary conditions are proven to constitute an invertible mapping between: $(i)$ a canonical ensemble satisfying the $q^*$-maximum entropy principle for energy-eigenvalues $\varepsilon_i^*$, and, $(ii)$ a canonical ensemble satisfying the Shannon-Jaynes maximum entropy theory for energy-eigenvalues $\varepsilon_i$. Such an invertible mapping is demonstrated to facilitate an \emph{implicit} reconciliation between the $q^*$-maximum entropy principle and the large deviation theory. Numerical examples for exemplary cases are provided.

Reconciliation between the Tsallis maximum entropy principle and large deviation theory

The necessary conditions (NC) that reconcile canonical probability distributions obtained from the q-maximum entropy principle, subjected to both i) the additive duality of generalized statistics and ii) normal averages expectations with the large deviation theory, are derived. The validity of these necessary conditions is established on the basis of a result concerning large deviation properties of conditional measures. The NC for normal averages expectations are advantageous because they avoid the excessively prohibitive conditions obtained by previous studies when employing other forms for defining q-expectations. Numerical examples for an exemplary case are provided.

Maximally correlated multipartite quantum states

We investigate quantum states that posses both maximum entanglement and maximum discord between the pertinent parties. Since entanglement (discord) is defined only for bipartite (two qubit) systems, we shall introduce an appropriate sum over of all bi-partitions as the associated measure. The ensuing definition --not new for entanglement-- is thus extended here to quantum discord. Also, additional dimensions within the parties are considered ({\it qudits}). We also discuss nonlocality (in the form of maximum violation of a Bell inequality) for all multiqubit systems. The emergence of more nonlocal states than local ones, all of them possessing maximum entanglement, will be linked, surprisingly enough, to whether quantum mechanics is defined over the fields of real or complex numbers.

Space-time correlations in urban population flows

Evidences are presented concerning tantalizing regularities in cities' population-flows in what regards to space and time correlations. The former exhibit a distance-behavior (for large distances) compatible with the inverse square law, following an overall Lorentzian dependence with an scale-parameter of $74\pm6$ km. The later decay exponentially with a characteristic time of $17.2\pm1.3$ years. These features can be explained by a dynamical model for cities' population-growth of a Lagevinian nature. Numerical simulations based on the model confirm its applicability. The model also allows for the identification of collective normal modes of city-growth dynamics that can be empirically identified.

The thermodynamics of urban population flows

Orderliness, reflected via mathematical laws, is encountered in different frameworks involving social groups. Here we show that a thermodynamics can be constructed that macroscopically describes urban population flows. Microscopic dynamic equations and simulations with random walkers underlie the macroscopic approach. Our results might be regarded, via suitable analogies, as a step towards building an explicit social thermodynamics.

On the connection between Complementarity and Uncertainty Principles in the Mach-Zehnder interferometric setting

We revisit, in the framework of Mach-Zehnder interferometry, the connection between the complementarity and uncertainty principles of quantum mechanics. Specifically, we show that, for a pair of suitably chosen observables, the trade-off relation between the complementary path information and fringe visibility is equivalent to the uncertainty relation given by Schr\"odinger and Robertson, and to the one provided by Landau and Pollak as well. We also employ entropic uncertainty relations (based on Rényi entropic measures) and study their meaning for different values of the entropic parameter. We show that these different values define regimes which yield qualitatively different information concerning the system, in agreement with findings of [A. Luis, Phys. Rev. A 84, 034101 (2011)]. We find that there exists a regime for which the entropic uncertinty relations can be used as criteria to pinpoint non trivial states of minimum uncertainty.
