A Family of Exact, Analytic Time Dependent Wave Packet Solutions to a Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation

We obtain time dependent $q$-Gaussian wave-packet solutions to a non linear Schrödinger equation recently advanced by Nobre, Rego-Montero and Tsallis (NRT) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 (2011) 10601]. The NRT non-linear equation admits plane wave-like solutions ($q$-plane waves) compatible with the celebrated de Broglie relations connecting wave number and frequency, respectively, with energy and momentum. The NRT equation, inspired in the $q$-generalized thermostatistical formalism, is characterized by a parameter $q$, and in the limit $q \to 1$ reduces to the standard, linear Schrödinger equation. The $q$-Gaussian solutions to the NRT equation investigated here admit as a particular instance the previously known $q$-plane wave solutions. The present work thus extends the range of possible processes yielded by the NRT dynamics that admit an analytical, exact treatment. In the $q \to 1$ limit the $q$-Gaussian solutions correspond to the Gaussian wave packet solutions to the free particle linear Schrödinger equation. In the present work we also show that there are other families of nonlinear Schrödinger-like equations, besides the NRT one, exhibiting a dynamics compatible with the de Broglie relations. Remarkably, however, the existence of time dependent Gaussian-like wave packet solutions is a unique feature of the NRT equation not shared by the aforementioned, more general, families of nonlinear evolution equations.

Scale-invariance underlying the logistic equation and its social applications

On the basis of dynamical principles we derive the Logistic Equation (LE), widely employed (among multiple applications) in the simulation of population growth, and demonstrate that scale-invariance and a mean-value constraint are sufficient and necessary conditions for obtaining it. We also generalize the LE to multi-component systems and show that the above dynamical mechanisms underlie large number of scale-free processes. Examples are presented regarding city-populations, diffusion in complex networks, and popularity of technological products, all of them obeying the multi-component logistic equation in an either stochastic or deterministic way. So as to assess the predictability-power of our present formalism, we advance a prediction, regarding the next 60 months, for the number of users of the three main web browsers (Explorer, Firefox and Chrome) popularly referred as "Browser Wars".

Variational Principle underlying Scale Invariant Social Systems

MaxEnt's variational principle, in conjunction with Shannon's logarithmic information measure, yields only exponential functional forms in straightforward fashion. In this communication we show how to overcome this limitation via the incorporation, into the variational process, of suitable dynamical information. As a consequence, we are able to formulate a somewhat generalized Shannonian Maximum Entropy approach which provides a unifying "thermodynamic-like" explanation for the scale-invariant phenomena observed in social contexts, as city-population distributions. We confirm the MaxEnt predictions by means of numerical experiments with random walkers, and compare them with some empirical data.

A Shannon-Tsallis transformation

We determine a general link between two different solutions of the MaxEnt variational problem, namely, the ones that correspond to using either Shannon's or Tsallis' entropies in the concomitant variational problem. It is shown that the two variations lead to equivalent solutions that take different appearances but contain the same information. These solutions are linked by our transformation.

The workings of the Maximum Entropy Principle in collective human behavior

We exhibit compelling evidence regarding how well does the MaxEnt principle describe the rank-distribution of city-populations via an exhaustive study of the 50 Spanish provinces (more than 8000 cities) in a time-window of 15 years (1996-2010). We show that the dynamics that governs the population-growth is the deciding factor that originates the observed distributions. The connection between dynamics and distributions is unravelled via MaxEnt.

MaxEnt and dynamical information

The MaxEnt solutions are shown to display a variety of behaviors (beyond the traditional and customary exponential one) if adequate dynamical information is inserted into the concomitant entropic-variational principle. In particular, we show both theoretically and numerically that power laws and power laws with exponential cut-offs emerge as equilibrium densities in proportional and other dynamics.

Comment on "Improved bounds on entropic uncertainty relations"

We provide an analytical proof of the entropic uncertainty relations presented by de Vicente and Sanchez-Ruiz in [Phys. Rev. A 77, 042110 (2008)] and also show that the replacement of Eq. (27) by Eq. (29) in that reference introduces solutions that do not take fully into account the contraints of the problem, which in turn leads to some mistakes in their treatment.

Collision entropy and optimal uncertainty

We propose an alternative measure of quantum uncertainty for pairs of arbitrary observables in the 2-dimensional case, in terms of collision entropies. We derive the optimal lower bound for this entropic uncertainty relation, which results in an analytic function of the overlap of the corresponding eigenbases. Besides, we obtain the minimum uncertainty states. We compare our relation with other formulations of the uncertainty principle.

New features of quantum discord uncovered by q-entropies

The notion of quantum discord introduced by Ollivier and Zurek [Phys. Rev. Lett 88, 017901 (2001)] (see also Henderson and Vedral [J. Phys. A 34, 6899 (2001)]) has attracted increasing attention, in recent years, as an entropic quantifier of non-classical features pertaining to the correlations exhibited by bipartite quantum systems. Here we generalize the notion so as to encompass power-law q-entropies (that reduce to the standard Shannon entropy in the limit $q \to 1$) and study the concomitant consequences. The ensuing, new discord-like measures we advance describe aspects of non-classicality that are different from those associated with the standard quantum discord. A particular manifestation of this difference concerns a feature related to order. Let $D_1$ stand for the standard, Shannon-based discord measure and $D_q$ for the $q \ne 1$ one. If two quantum states $A$, $B$ are such that $D_1(A) > D_1(B)$, this order-relation does not remain invariant under a change from $D_1$ to $D_q$.

q-Fourier Transform and its inversion-problem

Tsallis' q-Fourier transform is not generally one-to-one. It is shown here that, if we eliminate the requirement that $q$ be fixed, and let it instead "float", a simple extension of the $F_q-$definition, this procedure restores the one-to-one character.

Quantum echoes in classical and semiclassical statistical treatments

Some quantal systems require only a small part of the full quantum theory for their analysis in classical terms. In such understanding we review some recent literature on semiclassical treatments. An analysis of it allows one to see that some important quantum features of the harmonic oscillator can indeed be already encountered at the classical or semiclassical statistical levels.

Deformed Statistics Kullback-Leibler Divergence Minimization within a Scaled Bregman Framework

The generalized Kullback-Leibler divergence (K-Ld) in Tsallis statistics [constrained by the additive duality of generalized statistics (dual generalized K-Ld)] is here reconciled with the theory of Bregman divergences for expectations defined by normal averages, within a measure-theoretic framework. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the dual generalized K-Ld is a scaled Bregman divergence. The Pythagorean theorem is derived from the minimum discrimination information-principle using the dual generalized K-Ld as the measure of uncertainty, with constraints defined by normal averages. The minimization of the dual generalized K-Ld, with normal averages constraints, is shown to exhibit distinctly unique features.

Parameter-free ansatz for inferring ground state wave functions of even potentials

Schrödinger's equation (SE) and the information-optimizing principle based on Fisher's information measure (FIM) are intimately linked, which entails the existence of a Legendre transform structure underlying the SE. In this comunication we show that the existence of such an structure allows, via the virial theorem, for the formulation of a parameter-free ground state's SE-ansatz for a rather large family of potentials. The parameter-free nature of the ansatz derives from the structural information it incorporates through its Legendre properties.

Direct Fisher inference of the quartic oscillator's eigenvalues

It is well known that a suggestive connection links Schrödinger's equation (SE) and the information-optimizing principle based on Fisher's information measure (FIM). It has been shown that this entails the existence of a Legendre transform structure underlying the SE. Such a structure leads to a first order partial differential equation (PDE) for the SE's eigenvalues from which a complete solution for them can be obtained. As an application we deal with the quantum theory of anharmonic oscillators, a long-standing problem that has received intense attention motivated by problems in quantum field theory and molecular physics. By appeal to the Cramer Rao bound we are able to Fisher-infer the particular PDE-solution that yields the eigenvalues without explicitly solving Schrödinger's equation. Remarkably enough, and in contrast with standard variational approaches, our present procedure does not involve free fitting parameters.

Special features of the relation between Fisher Information and Schrödinger eigenvalue equation

It is well known that a suggestive relation exists that links Schrödinger's equation (SE) to the information-optimizing principle based on Fisher's information measure (FIM). The connection entails the existence of a Legendre transform structure underlying the SE. Here we show that appeal to this structure leads to a first order differential equation for the SE's eigenvalues that, in certain cases, can be used to obtain the eigenvalues without explicitly solving SE. Complying with the above mentioned equation constitutes a necessary condition to be satisfied by an energy eigenvalue. We show that the general solution is unique.

Inferring an optimal Fisher measure

It is well known that a suggestive relation exists that links Schrödinger's equation (SE) to the information-optimizing principle based on Fisher's information measure (FIM). We explore here an approach that will allow one to infer the optimal FIM compatible with a given amount of prior information without explicitly solving first the associated SE. This technique is based on the virial theorem and it provides analytic solutions for the physically relevant FIM, that which is minimal subject to the constraints posed by the prior information.
