Sharp crossover from composite fermionization to phase separation in mesoscopic mixtures of ultracold bosons

We show that a two-component mixture of a few repulsively interacting ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional trap possesses very different quantum regimes and that the crossover between them can be induced by tuning the interactions in one of the species. In the composite fermionization regime, where the interactions between both components are large, none of the species show large occupation of any natural orbital. Our results show that by increasing the interaction in one of the species, one can reach the phase-separated regime. In this regime, the weakly interacting component stays at the center of the trap and becomes almost fully phase coherent, while the strongly interacting component is displaced to the edges of the trap. The crossover is sharp, as observed in the in the energy and the in the largest occupation of a natural orbital of the weakly interacting species. Such a transition is a purely mesoscopic effect which disappears for large atom numbers.

Spin instabilities of infinite nuclear matter and effective tensor interactions

We study the effects of the tensor force, present in modern effective nucleon-nucleon interactions, in the spin instability of nuclear and neutron matter. Stability conditions of the system against certain very low energy excitation modes are expressed in terms of Landau parameters. It is shown that in the spin case, the stability conditions are equivalent to the condition derived from the spin susceptibility, which is obtained as the zero-frequency and long-wavelength limit of the spin response function calculated in the Random Phase Approximation. Zero-range forces of the Skyrme type and finite-range forces of M3Y and Gogny type are analyzed. It is shown that for the Skyrme forces considered, the tensor effects are sizeable, and tend to increase the spin instability which appears at smaller densities than in the case that the tensor is not taken into account. On the contrary, the tensor contribution of finite range forces to the spin susceptibility is small or negligible for both isospin channels of symmetric nuclear matter as well as for neutron matter. A comparison with the spin susceptibility provided by realistic interactions is also presented.

Fast generation of spin-squeezed states in bosonic Josephson junctions

We describe methods for fast production of highly coherent-spin-squeezed many-body states in bosonic Josephson junctions (BJJs). We start from the known mapping of the two-site Bose-Hubbard (BH) Hamiltonian to that of a single effective particle evolving according to a Schrödinger-like equation in Fock space. Since, for repulsive interactions, the effective potential in Fock space is nearly parabolic, we extend recently derived protocols for shortcuts to adiabatic evolution in harmonic potentials to the many-body BH Hamiltonian. The best scaling of the squeezing parameter for large number of atoms N is ξ^2_S ~ 1/N.

Dynamic generation of spin-squeezed states in bosonic Josephson junctions

We analyze the formation of squeezed states in a condensate of ultracold bosonic atoms confined by a double-well potential. The emphasis is set on the dynamical formation of such states from initially coherent many-body quantum states. Two cases are described: the squeezing formation in the evolution of the system around the stable point, and in the short time evolution in the vicinity of an unstable point. The latter is shown to produce highly squeezed states on very short times. On the basis of a semiclassical approximation to the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we are able to predict the amount of squeezing, its scaling with $N$ and the speed of coherent spin formation with simple analytical formulas which successfully describe the numerical Bose-Hubbard results. This new method of producing highly squeezed spin states in systems of ultracold atoms is compared to other standard methods in the literature.

Comparative study of neutron and nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials

We present calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron and symmetric nuclear matter with simplified Argonne nucleon-nucleon potentials for different many-body theories. We compare critically the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results to other formalisms, such as the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone expansion up to third order, Self-Consistent Green's Functions, Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo, and Fermi Hyper Netted Chain. We evaluate the importance of spin-orbit and tensor correlations in the equation of state and find these to be important in a wide range of densities.

Ferromagnetic transition of a two-component Fermi gas of Hard Spheres

We use microscopic many-body theory to analyze the problem of itinerant ferromagnetism in a repulsive atomic Fermi gas of Hard Spheres. Using simple arguments, we show that the available theoretical predictions for the onset of the ferromagnetic transition predict a transition point at a density ($k_F a \sim 1$) that is too large to be compatible with the universal low-density expansion of the energy. We present new variational calculations for the hard-sphere Fermi gas, in the framework of Fermi hypperneted chain theory, that shift the transition to higher densities ($k_F a \sim 1.8$). Backflow correlations, which are mainly active in the unpolarized system, are essential for this shift.

Microscopic self-energy of ${}^{40}$Ca from the charge-dependent Bonn potential

The effects of short-range correlations on the nucleon self-energy in $^{40}$Ca are investigated using the charge-dependent Bonn (CDBonn) interaction. Comparisons are made with recent results for the self-energy of $^{40}$Ca derived from the dispersive optical-model (DOM). Particular emphasis is placed on the non-locality of the imaginary part of the microscopic self-energy which suggests that future DOM analyses should include this feature. In particular, data below the Fermi energy appear sensitive to the implied orbital angular momentum dependence of the self-energy. Quasiparticle properties obtained for the CDBonn interaction are substantially more mean-field-like than the corresponding DOM results with spectroscopic factors larger by about 0.2 e.g. Reaction cross sections obtained from the microscopic self-energy for scattering energies up to 100 MeV indicate that an adequate description of volume absorption is obtained while a considerable fraction of surface absorption is missing. The analysis of the non-locality of the imaginary part of the microscopic self-energy suggests that a simple gaussian provides an adequate description, albeit with rather large values for $β$, the non-locality parameter.

Beyond standard two-mode dynamics in Bosonic Josephson junctions

We examine the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a symmetric double-well potential for a broad range of non-linear couplings. We demonstrate the existence of a region, beyond those of Josephson oscillations and self-trapping, which involves the dynamical excitation of the third mode of the double-well potential. We develop a simple semiclassical model for the coupling between the second and third modes that describes very satisfactorily the full time-dependent dynamics. Experimental conditions are proposed to probe this phenomenon.

Bose-Einstein Condensates on slightly asymmetric double-well potentials

An analytical insight into the symmetry breaking mechanisms underlying the transition from Josephson to self-trapping regimes in Bose-Einstein condensates is presented. We obtain expressions for the ground state properties of the system of a gas of attractive bosons modelized by a two site Bose-Hubbard hamiltonian with an external bias. Simple formulas are found relating the appearance of fragmentation in the condensate with the large quantum fluctuations of the population imbalance occurring in the transition from the Josephson to the self-trapped regime.

Weakly linked binary mixtures of F=1 87-Rb Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a study of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a double-well potential within the framework of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We reexamine both the single component and the binary mixture cases for such a potential, and we investigate in which situations a simpler two-mode approach leads to an accurate description of their dynamics. We also estimate the validity of the most usual dimensionality reductions used to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. To this end, we compare both the semi-analytical two-mode approaches and the numerical simulations of the 1D reductions with the full 3D numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our analysis provides a guide to clarify the validity of several simplified models that describe mean field non-linear dynamics, using an experimentally feasible binary mixture of an F=1 spinor condensate with two of its Zeeman manifolds populated, m=+1 and m=-1.

Macroscopic self trapping in BECs: analysis of a dynamical quantum phase transition

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential undergoing a dynamical transition from the regime of Josephson oscillations to the regime of self-trapping. We analyze the statistical properties of the ground state (or the highest excited state) of the Hamiltonian in these two regimes for attractive (repulsive) interactions. We demonstrate that it is impossible to describe the transition within the mean-field theory. In contrast, the transition proceeds through a strongly correlated delocalized state, with large quantum fluctuations, and spontaneous breaking of the symmetry.

Strange mesons from SIS to FAIR

The properties of $K$ and $\bar K$ mesons in nuclear matter at finite temperature are obtained from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the $s$- and p-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The in-medium solution accounts for Pauli blocking effects, mean-field binding on all the baryons involved, and $π$ and kaon self-energies. The $\bar K$ spectral function spreads over a wide range of energies, reflecting the melting of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance and the contribution of hyperon-hole components at finite temperature. In the $KN$ sector, the quasi-particle peak is considerably broadened with increasing density and temperature. We also study the energy weighted sum rules of the kaon propagator by matching the Dyson form of the propagator with its spectral Lehmann representation at low and high energies. The sum rules for the lower energy weights are fulfilled satisfactorily and reflect the contributions from the different quasi-particle and collective modes of the spectral function. We analyze the sensitivity of the sum rules to the distribution of spectral strength and their usefulness as quality tests of model calculations.

Energy weighted sum rules for mesons in hot and dense matter

We study energy weighted sum rules of the pion and kaon propagator in nuclear matter at finite temperature. The sum rules are obtained from matching the Dyson form of the meson propagator with its spectral Lehmann representation at low and high energies. We calculate the sum rules for specific models of the kaon and pion self-energy. The in-medium spectral densities of the K and anti-K mesons are obtained from a chiral unitary approach in coupled channels which incorporates the S- and P-waves of the kaon-nucleon interaction. The pion self-energy is determined from the P-wave coupling to particle-hole and Delta-hole excitations, modified by short range correlations. The sum rules for the lower energy weights are fulfilled satisfactorily and reflect the contributions from the different quasi-particle and collective modes of the meson spectral function. We discuss the sensitivity of the sum rules to the distribution of spectral strength and their usefulness as quality tests of model calculations.

Spinor BECs in a double-well: population transfer and Josephson oscillations

The dynamics of an F=1 spinor condensate in a two-well potential is studied within the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We derive two-mode equations relating the population imbalances, the phase differences among the condensates at each side of the barrier and the time evolution of the different Zeeman populations for the case of small population imbalances. The case of zero total magnetization is scrutinized in this limit demonstrating the ability of a two mode analysis to describe to a large extent the dynamics observed in the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. It is also demonstrated that the time evolution of the different total populations fully decouples from the Josephson tunneling phenomena. All the relevant time scales are clearly identified with microscopic properties of the atom-atom interactions.

Josephson oscillations in binary mixtures of F=1 spinor BECs

We analyze theoretically Josephson oscillations in a mixture of two Zeeman states of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. We find that in the strongly polarized case, the less populated component exhibits a complex dynamics with an anti-Josephson behavior, i.e. oscillates in phase with the more populated one. In the balanced population case the Josephson oscillations unveal a dependence with the different spin collision channels. This effect could be used to experimentally measure the distinct scattering lengths entering in the description of a spinor condensate. Our numerical results are in close agreement with an analytical description of the binary mixture using a two mode model.

Depletion of the nuclear Fermi sea

The short-range and tensor components of the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction induce a sizeable depletion of low momenta in the ground state of a nuclear many-body system. The self-consistent Green's function method within the ladder approximation provides an \textit{ab-initio} description of correlated nuclear systems that accounts properly for these effects. The momentum distribution predicted by this approach is analyzed in detail, with emphasis on the depletion of the lowest momentum state. The temperature, density, and nucleon asymmetry (isospin) dependence of the depletion of the Fermi sea is clarified. A connection is established between the momentum distribution and the time-ordered components of the self-energy, which allows for an improved interpretation of the results. The dependence on the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction provides quantitative estimates of the importance of short-range and tensor correlations in nuclear systems.

Neutron Fermi Liquids under the presence of a strong magnetic field with effective nuclear forces

Landau's Fermi Liquid parameters are calculated for non-superfluid pure neutron matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field at zero temperature. The particle-hole interactions in the system, where a net magnetization may be present, are characterized by these parameters in the framework of a multipolar formalism. We use either zero- or finite-range effective nuclear forces to describe the nuclear interaction. Using the obtained Fermi Liquid parameters, the effect of a strong magnetic field on some bulk magnitudes such as isothermal compressibility and spin susceptibility is also investigated.

Spin mixing in colliding spinor condensates: formation of an effective barrier

The dynamics of F=1 spinor condensates initially prepared in a double-well potential is studied in the mean field approach. It is shown that a small seed of $m=0$ atoms on a system with initially well separated m=1 and m=-1 condensates has a dramatic effect on their mixing dynamics, acting as an effective barrier for a remarkably long time. We show that this effect is due to the spinor character of the system, and provides an observable example of the interplay between the internal spin dynamics and the macroscopic evolution of the magnetization in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate.
