Liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter from realistic many-body approaches

The existence of a liquid-gas phase transition for hot nuclear systems at subsaturation densities is a well established prediction of finite temperature nuclear many-body theory. In this paper, we discuss for the first time the properties of such phase transition for homogeneous nuclear matter within the Self-Consistent Green's Functions approach. We find a substantial decrease of the critical temperature with respect to the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation. Even within the same approximation, the use of two different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions gives rise to large differences in the properties of the critical point.

Hot neutron matter from a Self-Consistent Green's Functions approach

A systematic study of the microscopic and thermodynamical properties of pure neutron matter at finite temperature within the Self-Consistent Green's Function approach is performed. The model dependence of these results is analyzed by both comparing the results obtained with two different microscopic interactions, the CD-BONN and the Argonne V18 potentials, and by analyzing the results obtained with other approaches, such as the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock approximation, the variational approach and the virial expansion.

Predicting spinor condensate dynamics from simple principles

We study the spin dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional F=1 condensates both at zero and finite temperatures for arbitrary initial spin configurations. The rich dynamical evolution exhibited by these non-linear systems is explained by surprisingly simple principles: minimization of energy at zero temperature, and maximization of entropy at high temperature. Our analytical results for the homogeneous case are corroborated by numerical simulations for confined condensates in a wide variety of initial conditions. These predictions compare qualitatively well with recent experimental observations and can, therefore, serve as a guidance for on-going experiments.

Ferromagnetic instabilities in neutron matter at finite temperature with the Gogny interaction

The properties of spin polarized neutron matter are studied both at zero and finite temperature using the D1 and the D1P parameterizations of the Gogny interaction. The results show two different behaviors: whereas the D1P force exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at a density of $ρ_c \sim 1.31$ fm$^{-3}$ whose onset increases with temperature, no sign of such a transition is found for D1 at any density and temperature, in agreement with recent microscopic calculations.

The kaon optical potential modified by Θ^+ Pentaquark excitation

We study the kaon nuclear optical potential including the effect of the Θ^+ pentaquark in a self-consistent approach, starting from an extension of the Juelich meson-exchange potential as bare kaon-nucleon interaction. Significant differences between a fully self-consistent calculation and the low-density Tρapproximation are observed. Whereas te influence of the KN -> Θ^+ absorption process is found to be negligible, due to the small Θ^+ KN coupling, the two-nucleon mechanism (KNN -> Θ^+ N), estimated from the two-meson coupling of the pentaquark, provides the necessary additional kaon absorption to reconcile with data the systematically low theoretical K^+ nucleus reaction cross sections.

Density functional study of two-dimensional He-4 clusters

Binding energies and density profiles of two-dimensional systems of liquid He-4 with different geometries are studied by means of a zero-range density functional adjusted to reproduce the line tension obtained in a previous diffusion Monte Carlo calculation (lambda_{DMC}=0.121 K/A). It is shown that this density functional provides accurate results for the binding energy of large clusters with a reasonable computational effort.

Microscopic calculations of spin polarized neutron matter at finite temperature

The properties of spin polarized neutron matter are studied both at zero and finite temperature within the framework of the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism, using the Argonne v18 nucleon-nucleon interaction. The free energy, energy and entropy per particle are calculated for several values of the spin polarization, densities and temperatures together with the magnetic susceptibility of the system. The results show no indication of a ferromagnetic transition at any density and temperature.

Vortices in Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates in the Large Gas Parameter Region

In this work we compare the results of the Gross-Pitaevskii and modified Gross-Pitaevskii equations with ab initio variational Monte Carlo calculations for Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms in axially symmetric traps. We examine both the ground state and excited states having a vortex line along the z-axis at high values of the gas parameter and demonstrate an excellent agreement between the modified Gross-Pitaevskii and ab initio Monte Carlo methods, both for the ground and vortex states.

In-medium effects on the $K^-/K^+$ ratio at GSI

The in-medium modifications on the $K^-/K^+$ ratio produced at GSI are studied. Particular attention is paid to the properties of antikaons, which determine the chemical potential and temperature at freeze-out conditions. Different approaches have been considered: non-interacting $K^-$, on-shell self-energy and single-particle spectral density. We observe that the full off-shell approach reproduces the "broad-band equilibration" advocated by Brown being the spectral density crucial to explain an enhanced $K^-/K^+$ ratio.

Spin-orbit and tensor interactions in homogeneous matter of nucleons: accuracy of modern many-body theories

We study the energy per particle of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter using realistic nucleon--nucleon potentials having non central tensor and spin--orbit components, up to three times the empirical nuclear matter saturation density, $ρ_0=0.16$ fm$^{-3}$. The calculations are carried out within the frameworks of the Brueckner--Bethe--Goldstone (BBG) and Correlated Basis Functions (CBF) formalisms, in order to ascertain the accuracy of the methods. The two hole--line approximation, with the continuous choice for the single particle auxiliary potential, is adopted for the BBG approach, whereas the variational Fermi Hypernetted Chain/Single Operator Chain theory, corrected at the second order perturbative expansion level, is used in the CBF one. The energies are then compared with the available Quantum and Variational Monte Carlo results in neutron matter and with the BBG, up to the three hole--line diagrams. For neutron matter and potentials without spin--orbit components all methods, but perturbative CBF, are in reasonable agreement up to $ρ\sim$ 3 $ρ_0$. After the inclusion of the LS interactions, we still find agreement around $ρ_0$, whereas it is spoiled at larger densities. The spin--orbit potential lowers the energy of neutron matter at $ρ_0$ by $\sim$ 3--4 MeV per nucleon. In symmetric nuclear matter, the BBG and the variational results are in agreement up to $\sim$ 1.5 $ρ_0$. Beyond this density, and in contrast with neutron matter, we find good agreement only for the potential having spin--orbit components.

Ground state properties of a dilute homogeneous Bose gas of hard disks in two dimensions

The energy and structure of a dilute hard-disks Bose gas are studied in the framework of a variational many-body approach based on a Jastrow correlated ground state wave function. The asymptotic behaviors of the radial distribution function and the one-body density matrix are analyzed after solving the Euler equation obtained by a free minimization of the hypernetted chain energy functional. Our results show important deviations from those of the available low density expansions, already at gas parameter values $x\sim 0.001$. The condensate fraction in 2D is also computed and found generally lower than the 3D one at the same $x$.

Energy and Structure of Hard-Sphere Bose Gases in three and two dimensions

The energy and structure of dilute gases of hard spheres in three dimensions is discussed, together with some aspects of the corresponding 2D systems. A variational approach in the framework of the Hypernetted Chain Equations (HNC) is used starting from a Jastrow wavefunction that is optimized to produce the best two--body correlation factor with the appropriate long range. Relevant quantities describing static properties of the system are studied as a function of the gas parameter $x=ρa^d$ where $ρ$, $a$ and $d$ are the density, $s$--wave scattering length of the potential and dimensionality of the space, respectively. The occurrence of a maximum in the radial distribution function and in the momentum distribution is a natural effect of the correlations when $x$ increases. Some aspects of the asymptotic behavior of the functions characterizing the structure of the systems are also investigated.

Correlations in Hot Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

The single-particle spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter are computed using the ladder approximation within the theory of finite temperature Green's functions. The internal energy and the momentum distributions of protons and neutrons are studied as a function of the density and the asymmetry of the system. The proton states are more strongly depleted when the asymmetry increases while the occupation of the neutron states is enhanced as compared to the symmetric case. The self-consistent Green's function approach leads to slightly smaller energies as compared to the Brueckner Hartree Fock approach. This effect increases with density and thereby modifies the saturation density and leads to smaller symmetry energies.

In-medium properties of antikaons at finite temperature: the K^-/K^+ ratio at GSI

The $K^-/K^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions at GSI is studied including the properties of the participating hadrons in hot and dense matter, paying a particular attention to the in-medium properties of antikaons at finite temperature. The determination of the temperature and chemical potential at freeze-out conditions compatible with the ratio $K^-/K^+$ is very delicate, and depends on the approach adopted for the antikaon self-energy. Different approaches for the $K^-$ self-energy have been considered: non-interacting $K^-$, on-shell self-energy and single-particle spectral density. We observe that the use of an energy dependent $\bar{K}$ spectral density lowers considerably the freeze-out temperature with respect to the on-shell approach. We also conclude that the full off-shell approach gives rise to the "broad-band equilibration" advocated by Brown, Rho and Song.

Lambda-Lambda bond energy from the Nijmegen potentials

The $ΛΛ$ bond energy $ΔB_{ΛΛ}$ in $ΛΛ$ hypernuclei is obtained from a $G$-matrix calculation which includes the coupling between the $ΛΛ$, $ΞN$ and $ΣΣ$ channels, as well as the effect of Pauli blocking to all orders. The Nijmegen NSC97e model is used as bare baryon-baryon interaction in the strangeness $S=-2$ sector. The $ΛΛ$-$ΞN$ coupling increases substantially the bond energy with respect to the uncoupled $ΛΛ$ case. However, the additional incorporation of the $ΣΣ$ channel, which couples simultaneously to $ΛΛ$ and $ΞN$ states, has a surprisingly drastic effect and reduces the bond energy down to a value closer to that obtained in an uncoupled calculation. We find that a complete treatment of Pauli blocking reduces the repulsive effect on the bond energy to about half of what was claimed before.

Pairing in two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures

The possibilities of pairing in two-dimensional boson-fermion mixtures are carefully analyzed. It is shown that the boson-induced attraction between two identical fermions dominates the p-wave pairing at low density. For a given fermion density, the pairing gap becomes maximal at a certain optimal boson concentration. The conditions for observing pairing in current experiments are discussed

Two-dimensional clusters of liquid 4-He

The binding energies of two-dimensional clusters (puddles) of $^4$He are calculated in the framework of the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The results are very well fitted by a mass formula in powers of $x=N^{-1/2}$, where $N$ is the number of particles. The analysis of the mass formula allows for the extraction of the line tension, which turns out to be 0.121 K/A. Sizes and density profiles of the puddles are also reported.
