High momentum response of liquid 3He

A final-state-effects formalism suitable to analyze the high-momentum response of Fermi liquids is presented and used to study the dynamic structure function of liquid $^3$He. The theory, developed as a natural extension of the Gersch-Rodriguez formalism, incorporates the Fermi statistics explicitely through a new additive term which depends on the semi-diagonal two-body density matrix. The use of a realistic momentum distribution, calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method, and the inclusion of this additive correction allows for a good agreement with available deep-inelastic neutron scattering data.

Microscopic study of the He2-SF6 trimers

The He2-SF6 trimers, in their different He isotopic combinations, are studied both in the framework of the correlated Jastrow approach and of the Correlated Hyperspherical Harmonics expansion method. The energetics and structure of the He-SF6 dimers are analyzed, and the existence of a characteristic rotational band in the excitation spectrum is discussed, as well as the isotopic differences. The binding energies and the spatial properties of the trimers, in their ground and lowest lying excited states, obtained by the Jastrow ansatz are in excellent agreement with the results of the converged CHH expansion. The introduction of the He-He correlation makes all trimers bound by largely suppressing the short range He-He repulsion. The structural properties of the trimers are qualitatively explained in terms of the shape of the interactions, Pauli principle and masses of the constituents.

Microscopic study of neutrino trapping in hyperon stars

Employing the most recent parametrization of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group, we investigate, in the framework of the Brueckner--Bethe--Goldstone many-body theory at zero temperature, the influence of neutrino trapping on the composition, equation of state, and structure of neutron stars, relevant to describe the physical conditions of a neutron star immediately after birth (protoneutron star). We find that the presence of neutrinos changes significantly the composition of matter delaying the appearance of hyperons and making the equation of state stiffer. We explore the consequences of neutrino trapping on the early evolution of a neutron star and on the nature of the final compact remnant left by the supernova explosion.

K^-/K^+ ratio at GSI in hot and dense matter

The $K^-/K^+$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions at GSI energies is studied including the properties of the participating hadrons in hot and dense matter. The determination of the temperature and chemical potential at freeze-out conditions compatible with the ratio $K^-/K^+$ is very delicate, and depends on the approach adopted for the antikaon self-energy. Three approaches for the $K^-$ self-energy are considered: non-interacting $K^-$, on-shell self-energy and single-particle spectral density. With respect to the on-shell approach, the use of an energy dependent $\bar{K}$ spectral density, including both s- and p-wave components of the $\bar{K}N$ interaction, lowers considerably the freeze-out temperature and gives rise to the "broad-band equilibration" advocated by Brown, Rho and Song.

Energy and structure of dilute hard- and soft-sphere gases

The energy and structure of dilute hard- and soft-sphere Bose gases are systematically studied in the framework of several many-body approaches, as the variational correlated theory, the Bogoliubov model and the uniform limit approximation, valid in the weak interaction regime. When possible, the results are compared with the exact diffusion Monte Carlo ones. A Jastrow type correlation provides a good description of the systems, both hard- and soft-spheres, if the hypernetted chain energy functional is freely minimized and the resulting Euler equation is solved. The study of the soft-spheres potentials confirms the appearance of a dependence of the energy on the shape of the potential at gas paremeter values of $x \sim 0.001$. For quantities other than the energy, such as the radial distribution functions and the momentum distributions, the dependence appears at any value of $x$. The occurrence of a maximum in the radial distribution function, in the momentum distribution and in the excitation spectrum is a natural effect of the correlations when $x$ increases. The asymptotic behaviors of the functions characterizing the structure of the systems are also investigated. The uniform limit approach results very easy to implement and provides a good description of the soft-sphere gas. Its reliability improves when the interaction weakens.

Pairing in asymmetric two-component fermion matter

We analyze the possibilities of pairing between two different fermion species in asymmetric matter at low density. While the direct interaction allows pairing only for very small asymmetries, the pairing mediated by polarization effects is always possible, with a pronounced maximum at finite asymmetry. We present analytical results up to second order in the low-density parameter $k_F a$.

Spin polarized neutron matte and magnetic susceptibility within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation

The Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism is applied to study spin polarized neutron matter properties. Results of the total energy per particle as a function of the spin polarization and density are presented for two modern realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, Nijmegen II and Reid93. We find that the dependence of the energy on the spin polarization is practically parabolic in the full range of polarizations. The magnetic susceptibility of the system is computed. Our results show no indication of a ferromagnetic transition which becomes even more difficult as the density increases.

$Δ(1232)$ Isobar Excitations and the Ground State of Nuclei

The influence of $Δ$ isobar components on the ground state properties of nuclear systems is investigated for nuclear matter as well as finite nuclei. Many-body wave functions, including isobar configurations, and binding energies are evaluated employing the framework of the coupled-cluster theory. It is demonstrated that the effect of isobar configurations depends in a rather sensitive way on the model used for the baryon-baryon interaction. As examples for realistic baryon-baryon interactions with explicit inclusion of isobar channels we use the local ($V28$) and non-local meson exchange potentials (Bonn$_{2000}$) but also a model recently developed by the Salamanca group, which is based on a quark picture. The differences obtained for the nuclear observables are related to the treatment of the interaction, the $π$-exchange contributions in particular, at high momentum transfers.

Finite temperature effects on the antikaon optical potential

By solving the Bethe-Goldstone equation, we have obtained the $\bar{K}$ optical potential from the $\bar{K}N$ effective interaction in nuclear matter at T=0. We have extended the model by incorporating finite temperature effects in order to adapt our calculations to the experimental conditions in heavy-ion collisions. In the rank of densities ($0-2ρ_0$), the finite temperature $\bar{K}$ optical potential shows a smooth behaviour if we compare it to the T=0 outcome. Our model has also been applied to the study of the ratio between $K^+$ and $K^-$ produced at GSI with $T$ around 70 MeV. Our results point at the necessity of introducing an attractive $\bar{K}$ optical potential.

Finite Temperatur Dynamic Susceptibility of the Free Bose Gas

A detailed calculation of the real part of the finite temperature dynamic susceptibility of the free Bose gas is presented. After a short discussion on the different ways in which it can be calculated for temperatures above and below the Bose--Einstein transition temperature, its main properties and its evolution with $q$ and $T$ are analyzed. Finally, expressions for the lowest order energy weighted sum rules are also derived and studied.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in the Large Gas Parameter Regime

Bose-Einstein condensates of 10$^4$ $^{85}$Rb atoms in a cylindrical trap are studied using a recently proposed modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The existence of a Feshbach resonance allows for widely tuning the scattering length of the atoms, and values of the peak gas parameter, $x_{pk}$, of the order of 10$^{-2}$ can be attained. We find large differences between the results of the modified Gross-Pitaevskii and of the standard Thomas-Fermi, and Gross-Pitaevskii equations in this region. The column densities at $z=0$ may differ by as much as $\sim 30%$ and the half maximum radius by $\sim 20%$. The scattering lengths estimated by fitting the half maximum radius within different approaches can differ by $\sim 40%$.

Antikaons in nuclei and dense nuclear matter

We present recent progress on the properties of antikaons in nuclei and dense nuclear matter as obtained from two {\bar K}N interaction models: one based on the lowest-order meson-baryon chiral lagrangian and the other derived from a meson-exchange picture.

$Δ(1232)$ Isobar Excitations in Nuclear Many-Body Systems derived from various NN Interactions

$Δ$ isobar components in the nuclear many-body wave function are investigated for the deuteron, light nuclei (${}^{16}O$) and infinite nuclear matter within the framework of the coupled-cluster theory. The predictions derived for various realistic models of the baryon-baryon interaction are compared to each other. These include local ($V28$) and non-local meson exchange potentials (Bonn$_{2000}$) but also a model recently derived by the Salamanca group accounting for quark degrees of freedom. The characteristic differences which are obtained for the $NΔ$ and $ΔΔ$ correlation functions are related to the approximation made in deriving the matrix elements for the baryon-baryon interaction.

Hyperon effects on the properties of $β$-stable neutron star matter

We present results from Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations for $β$-stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degrees of freedom employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. Only $Σ^-$ and $Λ$ are present up to densities $\sim 7ρ_0$. The corresponding equations of state are then used to compute properties of neutron stars such as masses and radii.

High-momentum dynamic structure function of liquid 3He-4He mixtures: a microscopic approach

The high-momentum dynamic structure function of liquid 3He-4He mixtures has been studied introducing final state effects. Corrections to the impulse approximation have been included using a generalized Gersch-Rodriguez theory that properly takes into account the Fermi statistics of 3He atoms. The microscopic inputs, as the momentum distributions and the two-body density matrices, correspond to a variational (fermi)-hypernetted chain calculation. The agreement with experimental data obtained at $q=23.1$ Å$^{-1}$ is not completely satisfactory, the comparison being difficult due to inconsistencies present in the scattering measurements. The significant differences between the experimental determinations of the 4He condensate fraction and the 3He kinetic energy, and the theoretical results, still remain unsolved.

Finite temperature dynamic structure function of the free Bose gas

A detailed calculation of the finite temperature dynamic structure function of the free Bose gas is presented and discussed. After a short derivation of the expressions describing the exact response $S(q,ω;T)$ and the Impulse Approximation (IA) $S_{IA}(q,ω;t)$, their main properties and their evolution with q and T are analyzed. The lowest order energy weighted sum rules of both $S(q,ω;T)$ and $S_{IA}(q,ω;T)$ are also derived and commented. Finally, the $q\to\infty$ asymptotic behavior is analyzed and discussed in terms of scaling laws.

Hyperon-hyperon interactions and properties of neutron matter

We present results from Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculatons for beta stable neutron star matter with nucleonic and hyperonic degress degrees of freedom, employing the most recent parametrizations of the baryon-baryon interaction of the Nijmegen group. It is found that the only strange baryons emergin in beta stable matter up to total barionic densities of 1.2 fm^-3 are $Σ^-$ and $Λ$. The corresponding equations of state are then used to compute properties of neutron stars such as masses and radii.
