X-ray anomalous scattering investigations on the charge order in $α^\prime$-NaV$_2$O$_5$

Anomalous x-ray diffraction studies show that the charge ordering in $α^\prime$-NaV$_2$O$_5$ is of zig-zag type in all vanadium ladders. We have found that there are two models of the stacking of layers along \emph{c-}direction, each of them consisting of 2 degenerated patterns, and that the experimental data is well reproduced if the 2 patterns appears simultaneously. We believe that the low temperature structure contains stacking faults separating regions corresponding to the four possible patterns.

ESR study of (Sr,La,Ca)_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41}

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of single crystals of the spin-chain spin-ladder compound (Sr,La,Ca)_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41}. The data suggest that in intrinsically hole doped Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41} only a small amount of holes is transferred from the chains to the ladders with increasing x, resulting in a crossover from spin dimerized to uniform spin chains. In the samples of La_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41} with reduced hole content a very broad signal is observed in the paramagnetic state, indicative of a surprisingly strong anisotropy of the nearest neighbor exchange in the chains.

Heat transport in SrCu_2(BO_3)_2 and CuGeO_3

In the low dimensional spin systems $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ and $CuGeO_3$ the thermal conductivities along different crystal directions show pronounced double-peak structures and strongly depend on magnetic fields. For $SrCu_2(BO_3)_2$ the experimental data can be described by a purely phononic heat current and resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations. A similar effect seems to be important in $CuGeO_3$, too but, in addition, a magnetic contribution to the heat transport may be present.

Optical spectroscopy of (La,Ca)14Cu24O41 spin ladders: comparison of experiment and theory

Transmission and reflectivity of La_x Ca_14-x Cu_24 O_41 two-leg spin-1/2 ladders were measured in the mid-infrared regime between 500 and 12000 1/cm. This allows us to determine the optical conductivity sigma_1 directly and with high sensitivity. Here we show data for x=4 and 5 with the electrical field polarized parallel to the rungs (E||a) and to the legs (E||c). Three characteristic peaks are identified as magnetic excitations by comparison with two different theoretical calculations.

Magnetic Resonance of Spin Clusters and Triplet Excitations in a Spin-Peierls Magnet with Impurities

The magnetic resonance spectrum of spin clusters formed in spin-Peierls magnets in the vicinity of impurity ions was investigated. The observed temperature dependences of the effective g-factor and the linewidth of the electron spin resonance (ESR) in crystals of Cu(1-x)Ni(x)GeO(3) are described in the model of the exchange narrowing of the two-component spectrum with one component ascribed to spin clusters and exhibiting an anomalous value of the $g$-factor and the other related to triplet excitations. An estimation of the size of the suppressed dimerization region around the impurity ion is obtained (this region includes about 30 copper ions). The dependence of the effective g-factor and the ESR linewidth on the impurity concentration at low temperatures indicates the interaction of clusters.

Work function changes in the double layered manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7

We have investigated the behaviour of the work function of La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 as a function of temperature by means of photoemission. We found a decrease of 55 +/- 10 meV in going from 60 K to just above the Curie temperature (125 K) of the sample. Above T_C the work function appears to be roughly constant. Our results are exactly opposite to the work function changes calculated from the double-exchange model by Furukawa, but are consistent with other measurements. The disagreement with double-exchange can be explained using a general thermodynamic relation valid for second order transitions and including the extra processes involved in the manganites besides double-exchange interaction.

Magnon Heat Transport in (Sr,La)_14Cu_24O_41

We have measured the thermal heat conductivity kappa of the compounds Sr_14Cu_24O_41 and Ca_9La_5Cu_24O_41 containing doped and undoped spin ladders, respectively. We find a huge anisotropy of both, the size and the temperature dependence of kappa which we interpret in terms of a very large heat conductivity due to the magnetic excitations of the one-dimensional spin ladders. This magnon heat conductivity decreases with increasing hole doping of the ladders. The magnon heat transport is analyzed theoretically using a simple kinetic model. From this analysis we determine the spin gap and the temperature dependent mean free path of the magnons which ranges by several thousand angstroms at low temperature. The relevance of several scattering channels for the magnon transport is discussed.

Charge Ordering and Spin Dynamics in NaV2O5

We report high-resolution neutron inelastic scattering experiments on the spin excitations of NaV2O5. Below Tc, two branches associated with distinct energy gaps are identified. From the dispersion and intensity of the spin excitation modes, we deduce the precise zig-zag charge distribution on the ladder rungs and the corresponding charge order (about 0.6). We argue that the spin gaps observed in the low-T phase of this compound are primarily due to the charge transfer.

Using electronic structure changes to map the H-T phase diagram of alpha'-NaV2O5

We report polarized optical reflectance studies of α'-NaV2O5 as a function of temperature (4-45 K) and magnetic field (0-60 T). Rung directed electronic structure changes, as measured by near-infrared reflectance ratios ΔR(H)=R(H)/R(H=0 T), are especially sensitive to the phase boundaries. We employ these changes to map out an H-T phase diagram. Topological highlights include the observation of two phase boundaries slightly below T_{SG}, enhanced curvature of the 34 K phase boundary above 35 T, and, surprisingly, strong hysteresis effects of both transitions with applied field.

Observation of two-magnon bound states in the two-leg ladders of (Ca,La)14Cu24O41

Phonon-assisted 2-magnon absorption is studied at T=4 K in the spin-1/2 two-leg ladders of Ca_14-x La_x Cu_24 O_41 (x=5 and 4) for polarization of the electrical field parallel to the legs and the rungs, respectively. Two peaks at about 2140 and 2800 1/cm reflect van-Hove singularities in the density of states of the strongly dispersing 2-magnon singlet bound state, and a broad peak at about 4000 1/cm is identified with the 2-magnon continuum. Two different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation theory) describe the data very well for J_parallel = 1050 - 1100 1/cm and J_parallel / J_perp = 1 - 1.1. A striking similarity of the high-energy continuum absorption of the ladders and of the undoped high T_c cuprates is observed.

Heat transport by lattice and spin excitations in the spin chain compounds SrCuO_2 and Sr_2CuO_3

We present the results of measurements of the thermal conductivity of the quasi one-dimensional spin S=1/2 chain compound SrCuO_2 in the temperature range between 0.4 and 300 K along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the chains. An anomalously enhanced thermal conductivity is observed along the chains. The analysis of the present data and a comparison with analogous recent results for Sr_2CuO_3 and other similar materials demonstrates that this behavior is generic for cuprates with copper-oxygen chains and strong intrachain interactions. The observed anomalies are attributed to the one-dimensional energy transport by spin excitations (spinons), limited by the interaction between spin and lattice excitations. The energy transport along the spin chains has a non-diffusive character, in agreement with theoretical predictions for integrable models.

Approach to the metal-insulator transition in La(1-x)CaxMnO3 (0<x<.2): magnetic inhomogeneity and spin wave anomaly

We describe the evolution of the static and dynamic spin correlations of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, for x=0.1, 0.125 and 0.2, where the system evolves from the canted magnetic state towards the insulating ferromagnetic state, approaching the metallic transition (x=0.22). In the x=0.1 sample, the observation of two spin wave branches typical of two distinct types of magnetic coupling, and of a modulation in the elastic diffuse scattering characteristic of ferromagnetic inhomogeneities, confirms the static and dynamic inhomogeneous features previously observed at x$<$0.1. The anisotropic q-dependence of the intensity of the low-energy spin wave suggests a bidimensionnal character for the static inhomogeneities. At x=0.125, which corresponds to the occurence of a ferromagnetic and insulating state, the two spin wave branches reduce to a single one, but anisotropic. At this concentration, an anomaly appears at {\bf q$_0$}=(1.25,1.25,0), that could be related to an underlying periodicity, as arising from (1.5,1.5,0) superstructures. At x=0.2, the spin-wave branch is isotropic. In addition to the anomaly observed at q$_0$, extra magnetic excitations are observed at larger q, forming an optical branch. The two dispersion curves suggest an anti-crossing behavior at some {\bf q$_0$'} value, which could be explained by a folding due to an underlying perodicity involving four cubic lattice spacings.

Strong anisotropy of superexchange in the copper-oxygen chains of La_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}

Electron spin resonance data of Cu^{2+} ions in La_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41} crystals (x=9,11,12) reveal a very large width of the resonance line in the paramagnetic state. This signals an unusually strong anisotropy of ~10% of the isotropic Heisenberg superexchange in the Cu-O chains of this compound. The strong anisotropy can be explained by the specific geometry of two symmetrical 90 degree Cu-O-Cu bonds, which boosts the importance of orbital degrees of freedom. Our data show the apparent limitations of the applicability of an isotropic Heisenberg model to the low dimensional cuprates.

Magneto-Elastic Coupling in the Layered Manganite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$

We have studied the magneto-elastic coupling in the double layered Mn perovskite La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with an ultrasonic velocity technique. The temperature profile of both the in-plane and out-of-plane longitudinal velocities showed a large stiffening anomaly below the insulating paramagnetic to metallic ferromagnetic transition. Magnetic fluctuations effects consistent with the layered structure are evidenced as a frequency dependent velocity softening above the transition. The magneto-elastic coupling has been studied in magnetic field values up to 8 Tesla: the observations are consistent with a substantial magnetic anisotropy and a ferromagnetic order parameter with moments lying in the layers.

Does EELS haunt your photoemission measurements?

It has been argued in a recent paper by R. Joynt (R. Joynt, Science 284, p 777 (1999)) that in the case of poorly conducting solids the photoemission spectrum close to the Fermi Energy may be strongly influenced by extrinsic loss processes similar to those occurring in High Resolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (HR-EELS), thereby obscuring information concerning the density of states or one electron Green's function sought for. In this paper we present a number of arguments, both theoretical and experimental, that demonstrate that energy loss processes occurring once the electron is outside the solid, contribute only weakly to the spectrum and can in most cases be either neglected or treated as a weak structureless background.

Glassy Spin Freezing and NMR Wipeout Effect in the High-T_c Superconductor La1.90Sr0.10CuO4: What is the Relationship With Stripes ?

We report on 139La and 63Ccu NMR/NQR measurements in the high-Tc superconductor La1.90Sr0.10CuO4 with Tc=26.5 K. Spin fluctuations probed by 139La spin-lattice relaxation (T1), continuously slow down on cooling through Tc. We argue that spin-freezing and superconductivity are bulk effects in this sample. Thus, both phenomena have to coexist microscopically. The distribution of 139La T1 values at low temperature reveals a wide spread of spin fluctuation frequencies in CuO2 planes. A simple estimate shows that Cu nuclei at sites where electronic fluctuations are the slowest are not observable because of too short relaxation times (wipeout effect). This means that the Cu NQR wipeout, observed in this sample, can be explained primarily by slow magnetic, rather than charge, fluctuations. This result does not rule out the connection between wipeout effect and charge stripe order [Hunt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4300 (1999)], but it indicates that the relationship between both phenomena is not straightforward. We argue that the wipeout fraction cannot define a proper order parameter for a stripe phase, and cannot be used alone as a criterion for its existence.

Hole distribution for (Sr,Ca,Y,La)_14 Cu_24 O_41 ladder compounds studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

The unoccupied electronic structure for the Sr_14Cu_24O_41 family of two-leg ladder compounds was investigated for different partial substitutions of Sr^2+ by Ca^2+, leaving the nominal hole count constant, and by Y^3+ or La^3+, reducing the nominal hole count from its full value of 6 per formula unit. Using polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy on single crystals, hole states on both the chain and ladder sites could be studied. While for intermediate hole counts all holes reside on O sites of the chains, a partial hole occupation on the ladder sites in orbitals oriented along the legs is observed for the fully doped compound Sr_14Cu_24O_41. On substitution of Ca for Sr orbitals within the ladder planes but perpendicular to the legs receive some hole occupation as well.

Excitations of the field-induced soliton lattice in CuGeO3

Here we report the first inelastic neutron scattering study of the magnetic excitations in the incommensurate phase of a spin-Peierls material. The results on CuGeO3 provide direct evidence of a finite excitation gap, two sharp magnetic excitation branches and a very low-lying excitation which is identified as a phason mode, the Goldstone mode of the incommensurate soliton lattice.
