Witness of mixed separable states useful for entanglement creation

Absolutely separable states form a special subset of the set of all separable states, as they remain separable under any global unitary transformation unlike other separable states. In this work we consider the set of absolutely separable bipartite states and show that it is convex and compact in any arbitrary dimensional Hilbert space. Through a generic approach of construction of suitable hermitian operators we prove the completeness of the separation axiom for identifying any separable state that is not absolutely separable. We demonstrate the action of such witness operators in different qudit systems. Examples of mixed separable systems are provided, pointing out the utility of the witness in entanglement creation using quantum gates. Decomposition of witnesses in terms of spin operators or photon polarizations facilitates their measureability for qubit states.

Improving the fidelity of teleportation through noisy channels using weak measurement

We employ the technique of weak measurement in order to enable preservation of teleportation fidelity for two-qubit noisy channels. We consider one or both qubits of a maximally entangled state to undergo amplitude damping, and show that the application of weak measurement and a subsequent reverse operation could lead to a fidelity greater than $2/3$ for any value of the decoherence parameter. The success probability of the protocol decreases with the strength of weak measurement, and is lower when both the qubits are affected by decoherence. Finally, our protocol is shown to work for the Werner state too.

Nonlocal continuous variable correlations and violation of Bell's inequality for light beams with topological singularities

We consider optical beams with topological singularities which possess Schmidt decomposition and show that such classical beams share many features of two mode entanglement in quantum optics. We demonstrate the coherence properties of such beams through the violations of Bell inequality for continuous variables using the Wigner function. This violation is a consequence of correlations between the $(x, p_x)$ and $(y, p_y)$ spaces which mathematically play the same role as nonlocality in quantum mechanics. The Bell violation for the LG beams is shown to increase with higher orbital angular momenta $l$ of the vortex beam. This increase is reminiscent of enhancement of nonlocality for many particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states or for higher spins. The states with large $l$ can be easily produced using spatial light modulators.

Study of cosmic backreaction on the future evolution of an accelerating universe using multiple domains

We investigate the effect of backreaction due to inhomogeneities on the evolution of the present Universe by considering the Universe to be partitioned into multiple domains within the Buchert framework. Taking the observed present acceleration of the universe as an essential input, we study the effect of inhomogeneities on the future evolution. We find that the backreaction from inhomogeneities causes the acceleration to slow down in the future for a range of initial configurations and model parameters, and even lead in certain cases to the emergence of a future decelerating epoch. We consider two different partitioning of the Universe and perform a comparative analysis for the two cases on the behaviour of the acceleration and backreaction of the Universe.

Effect of cosmic backreaction on the future evolution of an accelerating universe

We investigate the effect of backreaction due to inhomogeneities on the evolution of the present universe by considering a two-scale model within the Buchert framework. Taking the observed present acceleration of the universe as an essential input, we study the effect of inhomogeneities in the future evolution. We find that the backreaction from inhomogeneities causes the acceleration to slow down in the future for a range of initial configurations and model parameters. The present acceleration ensures formation of the cosmic event horizon, and our analysis brings out how the effect of the event horizon could further curtail the global acceleration, and even lead in certain cases to the emergence of a future decelerating epoch.

Cosmological backreaction and the future evolution of an accelerating universe

We investigate the effect of backreaction due to inhomogeneities on the evolution of the present universe within the Buchert framework. Our analysis shows how backreaction from inhomogeneities in the presence of the cosmic event horizon causes the current acceleration of the Universe to slow down in the future and even lead in certain cases to the emergence of a future decelerating epoch.

Quantum key distribution using intra-particle entanglement

We propose the use of intra-particle entanglement to enhance the security of a practical implementation of the Bennett-Brassard-1984 (BB84) quantum key distribution scheme. Intra-particle entanglement is an attractive resource since it can be easily generated using only linear optics. Security is studied under a simple model of incoherent attack for protocols involving two or all five mutually unbiased bases. In terms of efficiency of secret key generation and tolerable error rate, the latter is found to be superior to the former. We find that states that allow secrecy distillation are necessarily entangled, though they may be local. Since more powerful attacks by Eve obviously exist, our result implies that security is a strictly stronger condition than entanglement for these protocols.

Detecting mixedness of qutrit systems using the uncertainty relation

We show that the uncertainty relation as expressed in the Robertson-Schrodinger generalized form can be used to detect the mixedness of three-level quantum systems in terms of measureable expectation values of suitably chosen observables when prior knowledge about the basis of the given state is known. In particular, we demonstrate the existence of observables for which the generalized uncertainty relation is satisfied as an equality for pure states and a strict inequality for mixed states corresponding to single as well as bipartite sytems of qutrits. Examples of such observables are found for which the magnitude of uncertainty is proportional to the linear entropy of the system, thereby providing a method for measuring mixedness.

A testable prediction of the no-signalling condition using a variant of the EPR-Bohm example

Predictive power of the no-signalling condition (NSC) is demonstrated in a testable situation involving a non-ideal Stern-Gerlach (SG) device in one of the two wings of the EPR-Bohm entangled pairs. In this wing, for two types of measurement in the other wing, we consider the spin state of a selected set of particles that are confined to a particular half of the plane while emerging from the SG magnetic field region. Due to non-idealness of the SG setup, this spin state will have superposing components involving a relative phase for which a testable quantitative constraint is obtained by invoking NSC, thereby providing a means for precision testing of this fundamentally significant principle.

Fine-grained uncertainty relation and biased non-local games in bipartite and tripartite systems

The fine-grained uncertainty relation can be used to discriminate among classical, quantum and super-quantum correlations based on their strength of nonlocality, as has been shown for bipartite and tripartite systems with unbiased measurement settings. Here we consider the situation when two and three parties, respectively, choose settings with bias for playing certain non-local games. We show analytically that while the fine-grained uncertainty principle is still able to distinguish classical, quantum and super-quantum correlations for biased settings corresponding to certain ranges of the biasing parameters, the above-mentioned discrimination is not manifested for all biasing.

Detecting quantum correlations in separable systems

Quantum correlations in composite and separable quantum systems are characterized by non-vanishing quantum discord. We demonstrate the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of hermitian witness operators for quantum discord, bypassing the problem of non-convexity of the set of all classical states. We propose an example of a linear witness which can detect quantum correlations in large classes of separable bipartite systems. Decomposition of the witness in terms of a small number of locally measurable operators as shown here, paves the way for experimental detection of quantum correlations beyond entanglement.

Fine-grained lower limit of entropic uncertainty in the presence of quantum memory

The limitation on obtaining precise outcomes of measurements performed on two non-commuting observables of a particle as set by the uncertainty principle in its entropic form, can be reduced in the presence of quantum memory. We derive a new entropic uncertainty relation based on fine- graining, which leads to an ultimate limit on the precision achievable in measurements performed on two incompatible observables in the presence of quantum memory. We show that our derived uncertainty relation tightens the lower bound set by entropic uncertainty for members of the class of two-qubit states with maximally mixed marginals, while accounting for the recent experimental results using maximally entangled pure states and mixed Bell-diagonal states. An implication of our uncertainty relation on the security of quantum key generation protocols is pointed out.

Construction of optimal teleportation witness operators from entanglement witnesses

Teleportation witnesses are hermitian operators which can identify useful entanglement for quantum teleportation. Here we provide a systematic method to construct teleportation witnesses from entanglement witnesses corresponding to general qudit systems. The witnesses so constructed are shown to be optimal for qubit and qutrit systems, and therefore detect the largest set of states useful for teleportation within a given class. We demonstrate the action of the witness pertaining to different classes of states in qubits and qutrits. Decomposition of the witness in terms of spin operators facilitiates experimental identification of useful resources for teleportation.

Strong quantum violation of the gravitational weak equivalence principle by a non-Gaussian wave-packet

The weak equivalence principle of gravity is examined at the quantum level in two ways. First, the position detection probabilities of particles described by a non-Gaussian wave-packet projected upwards against gravity around the classical turning point and also around the point of initial projection are calculated. These probabilities exhibit mass-dependence at both these points, thereby reflecting the quantum violation of the weak equivalence principle. Secondly, the mean arrival time of freely falling particles is calculated using the quantum probability current, which also turns out to be mass dependent. Such a mass-dependence is shown to be enhanced by increasing the non-Gaussianity parameter of the wave packet, thus signifying a stronger violation of the weak equivalence principle through a greater departure from Gaussianity of the initial wave packet. The mass-dependence of both the position detection probabilities and the mean arrival time vanish in the limit of large mass. Thus, compatibility between the weak equivalence principle and quantum mechanics is recovered in the macroscopic limit of the latter. A selection of Bohm trajectories is exhibited to illustrate these features in the free fall case.

Fine-grained uncertainty relation and nonlocality of tripartite systems

The upper bound of the fine-grained uncertainty relation is different for classical physics, quantum physics and no-signaling theories with maximal nonlocality (supper quantum correlation), as was shown in the case of bipartite systems [J. Oppenheim and S. Wehner, Science 330, 1072 (2010)]. Here, we extend the fine-grained uncertainty relation to the case of tripartite systems. We show that the fine-grained uncertainty relation determines the nonlocality of tripartite systems as manifested by the Svetlichny inequality, discriminating between classical physics, quantum physics and super quantum correlations.

Entanglement witness operator for quantum teleportation

The ability of entangled states to act as resource for teleportation is linked to a property of the fully entangled fraction. We show that the set of states with their fully entangled fraction bounded by a threshold value required for performing teleportation is both convex and compact. This feature enables for the existence of hermitian witness operators the measurement of which could distinguish unknown states useful for performing teleportation. We present an example of such a witness operator illustrating it for different classes of states.

Future deceleration due to cosmic backreaction in presence of the event horizon

The present acceleration of the universe leads to the formation of a cosmological future event horizon. We explore the effects of the event horizon on cosmological backreaction due to inhomogeneities in the universe. Beginning from the onset of the present accelerated era, we show that backreaction in presence of the event horizon causes acceleration to slow down in the subsequent evolution. Transition to deceleration occurs eventually, ensuring avoidance of a big rip.

Proposal for testing non-locality of single photons in cavities

A scheme is formulated for testing nonlocality of single photons by considering the state of a single photon that could be located within one of two spatially separated cavities. The outcomes of four experiments on this state involving the resonant interactions of two-level atoms with these cavities and a couple of other auxiliary ones is shown to lead to a contradiction with the criterion of locality.
