Accelerating Hasenbusch's acceleration of Hybrid Monte Carlo

Hasenbusch has proposed splitting the pseudo-fermionic action into two parts, in order to speed-up Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations of QCD. We have tested a different splitting, also using clover-improved Wilson fermions. An additional speed-up between 5 and 20% over the original proposal was achieved in production runs.

A lattice calculation of vector meson couplings to the vector and tensor currents using chirally improved fermions

We present a quenched lattice calculation of $f_V^\perp/f_V$, the coupling of vector mesons to the tensor current normalized by the vector meson decay constant. The chirally improved lattice Dirac operator, which allows us to reach small quark masses, is used. We put emphasis on analyzing the quark mass dependence of $f_V^\perp/f_V$ and find only a rather weak dependence. Our results at the $ρ$ and $ϕ$ masses agree well with QCD sum rule calculations and those from previous lattice studies.

Accelerating the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm

An algorithm for separating the high- and low-frequency molecular dynamics modes in Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations of gauge theories with dynamical fermions is presented. The separation is based on splitting the pseudo-fermion action into two parts, as was initially proposed by Hasenbusch. We propose to introduce different evolution time-scales for each part. We test our proposal in realistic simulations of two-flavor O(a) improved Wilson fermions. A speed-up of more than a factor of three compared to the standard HMC algorithm is observed in a typical run.

Calculation of Moments of Structure Functions

The progress on the lattice computation of low moments of both the unpolarised and polarised nucleon structure functions is reviewed with particular emphasis on continuum and chiral extrapolations and comparison between quenched and unquenched fermions.

A lattice study of the spin structure of the Lambda hyperon

The internal spin structure of the Lambda is of special importance for the understanding of the spin structure of hadrons in general. The comparison between the nucleon and Lambda allows for a test of the relevant flavour-symmetry breaking effects. Using nonperturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation we have calculated the first moments of the unpolarised, longitudinally polarised and transversity quark distribution functions in the Lambda. The results indicate that flavour symmetry breaking has little effect on the internal spin structure, in accordance with model based expectations.

Exclusive photoproduction of hard dijets and magnetic susceptibility of QCD vacuum

We argue that coherent production of hard dijets by linearly polarized real photons can provide direct evidence for chirality violation in hard processes, the first measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate and the photon distribution amplitude. It can also serve as a sensitive probe of the generalized gluon parton distribution. Numerical calculations are presented for HERA kinematics.

Lattice QCD at finite temperature: Evidence for calorons from the eigenvectors of the Dirac operator

We analyze the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the staggered Dirac operator in quenched lattice QCD in the vicinity of the deconfinement phase transition using the Lüscher-Weisz gauge action. The spectral and localization properties of the low-lying eigenmodes show characteristic differences between the Z_3 sectors above the critical temperature T_c. These findings can be interpreted in terms of calorons.

The spin structure of the Lambda hyperon in quenched lattice QCD

It has been suggested to use the production of Lambda hyperons for investigating the nucleon spin structure. The viability of this idea depends crucially on the spin structure of the Lambda. Using nonperturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation we have studied matrix elements of two-quark operators in the Lambda. We present results for the axial vector current, which give us the contributions of the u, d, and s quarks to the Lambda spin.

Neutrino induced hard exclusive D_s production

Motivated by the possibility to use high intensity neutrino beams for neutrino-nucleon scattering experiments we analyze charged current induced exclusive meson production within the framework of generalized parton distributions. The cross section for hard exclusive D_s production is estimated in this formalism to leading order in QCD. The integrated cross section proves to be sizable. It is shown that the considered process is well suited to provide novel information on the gluon structure of nucleons, which is contained in the generalized gluon parton distribution.

Leading twist asymmetries in deeply virtual Compton scattering

We calculate spin, charge, and azimuthal asymmetries in deeply virtual Compton scattering at leading twist-two level. The measurement of these asymmetries gives an access to the imaginary and real part of all deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitudes. We note that a consistent description of this process requires taking into account twist-three contributions and give then a model dependent estimate of these asymmetries.

Impact of Higher Order and Soft Gluon Corrections on the Extraction of Higher Twist Effects in DIS

The impact of recently calculated next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections and soft gluon resummations on the extraction of higher twist contributions to the deep-inelastic structure function F_2 is studied using the BCDMS and SLAC data. It is demonstrated to which extent the need for higher twist terms is diminishing due to these higher order effects in the kinematical region, 0.35 \le x \le 0.85 and Q^2>1.2 GeV^2, investigated. In addition, theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of higher twist contributions are discussed, and comparisons to results obtained previously are made.

Spectrum of the SU(3) Dirac operator on the lattice: Transition from random matrix theory to chiral perturbation theory

We calculate complete spectra of the Kogut-Susskind Dirac operator on the lattice in quenched SU(3) gauge theory for various values of coupling constant and lattice size. From these spectra we compute the connected and disconnected scalar susceptibilities and find agreement with chiral random matrix theory up to a certain energy scale, the Thouless energy. The dependence of this scale on the lattice volume is analyzed. In the case of the connected susceptibility this dependence is anomalous, and we explain the reason for this. We present a model of chiral perturbation theory that is capable of describing the data beyond the Thouless energy and that has a common range of applicability with chiral random matrix theory.

Twist-three observables in deeply virtual Compton scattering on the nucleon

We study twist-three effects in deeply virtual Compton scattering on an unpolarized spin-1/2 target. A careful definition of observables as Fourier moments w.r.t. the azimuthal angle allows for a clear separation of twist-two and -three effects. Although the latter are power suppressed, they give leading contributions to the twist-three asymmetries and do not affect the twist-two observables.

Twist-three analysis of photon electroproduction with pion

We study twist-three effects in spin, charge, and azimuthal asymmetries in deeply virtual Compton scattering on a spin-zero target. Contributions which are power suppressed in 1/Q generate a new azimuthal angle dependence of the cross section which is not present in the leading twist results. On the other hand the leading twist terms are not modified by the twist three contributions. They may get corrected at twist four level. In the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation these new terms in the Fourier expansion with respect to the azimuthal angle are entirely determined by the twist-two skewed parton distributions. We also discuss more general issues like the general form of the angular dependence of the differential cross section, validity of factorization at twist-three level, and a relation of skewed parton distributions to spectral functions.

A lattice evaluation of four-quark operators in the nucleon

Nucleon matrix elements of various four-quark operators are evaluated in quenched lattice QCD using Wilson fermions. Some of these operators give rise to twist-four contributions to nucleon structure functions. Furthermore, they bear valuable information about the diquark structure of the nucleon. Mixing with lower-dimensional operators is avoided by considering appropriate representations of the flavour group. We find that for a certain flavour combination of baryon structure functions, twist-four contributions are very small. This suggests that twist-four effects for the nucleon might be much smaller than m_p^2/Q^2.

Calorons and localization of quark eigenvectors in lattice QCD

We analyze the localization properties for eigenvectors of the Dirac operator in quenched lattice QCD in the vicinity of the deconfinement phase transition. Studying the characteristic differences between the Z_3 sectors above the critical temperature T_c, we find indications for the presence of calorons.

Dirac eigenvalues and eigenvectors at finite temperature

We investigate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the staggered Dirac operator in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition of quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory. We consider both the global features of the spectrum and the local correlations. In the chirally symmetric phase, the local correlations in the bulk of the spectrum are still described by random matrix theory, and we investigate the dependence of the bulk Thouless energy on the simulation parameters. At and above the critical point, the properties of the low-lying Dirac eigenvalues depend on the $Z_3$-phase of the Polyakov loop. In the real phase, they are no longer described by chiral random matrix theory. We also investigate the localization properties of the Dirac eigenvectors in the different $Z_3$-phases.
