Light vector meson photoproduction at large t

We have studied in perturbative QCD all independent helicity amplitudes describing the photoproduction of light vector mesons at large $t$. We found a new hard production mechanism which is related to the possibility for a real photon to fluctuate into a massless $q\bar q$ pair in a chiral-odd spin configuration. Each helicity amplitude is given as a sum of a usual chiral-even contribution (when the helicities of quark and antiquark are antiparallel) and this additional chiral-odd part (where the helicities of quark and antiquark are parallel). The chiral-odd contribution is large, it leads to a dominance of the non spin-flip amplitude in a very broad region of intermediately high $|t|$. All amplitudes are expressed in terms of short distance asymptotics of the light-cone wave functions of vector meson (photon). We demonstrate that for each helicity amplitude there exists a soft non-factorizable contribution. We give arguments that for dominant non spin-flip helicity amplitude the relative contribution of the soft nonfactorizable interactions is numerically not large.

Nuclear Enhanced Higher-Twist Effects in the Drell-Yan Process

We calculate the Drell-Yan cross section, resolving the full kinematics of the lepton pair, at high transverse momentum for hadron nucleus collisions. We use the general framework of Luo, Qiu and Sterman to calculate double scattering contributions that are of twist-4 and demonstrate their nuclear enhancement. By comparing single and double scattering at RHIC energies we find that double scattering gives contributions of comparable size. We also show that the angular dependence of the Drell-Yan pair discriminates between the various double scattering contributions.

Higher-Twist Contribution to Pion Structure Function: 4-Fermi Operators

We present quenched lattice QCD results for the contribution of higher-twist operators to the lowest non-trivial moment of the pion structure function. To be specific, we consider the combination $F_2^{π^+} + F_2^{π^-} - 2 F_2^{π^0}$ which has $I = 2$ and receives contributions from 4-Fermi operators only. We introduce the basis of lattice operators. The renormalization of the operators is done perturbatively in the $\bar{\rm{MS}}$ scheme using the 't Hooft-Veltman prescription for $γ_5$, taking particular care of mixing effects. The contribution is found to be of $O(f_π^2/Q^2)$, relative to the leading contribution to the moment of $F_2^{π^+}$.

Radiative corrections to deeply virtual Compton scattering

We discuss possibilities of measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitudes via different asymmetries in order to access the underlying skewed parton distributions. Perturbative one-loop coefficient functions and two-loop evolution kernels, calculated recently by a tentative use of residual conformal symmetry of QCD, are used for a model dependent numerical estimation of scattering amplitudes.

Angular Dependence of the Nuclear Enhancement of Drell-Yan Pairs

We calculate the nuclear enhancement in the angular distribution of Drell-Yan pairs produced in proton-nucleus reactions. Nuclear effects are encoded in universal twist-4 parton correlation functions. We find that the Lam-Tung relation for the angular coefficients of the lepton-pair distribution holds for the double-hard, but not for the soft-hard contribution. We also predict that nuclear enhancement effects at RHIC energies can be large.

Beyond the Thouless energy

The distribution and the correlations of the small eigenvalues of the Dirac operator are described by random matrix theory (RMT) up to the Thouless energy $E_c\propto 1/\sqrt{V}$, where $V$ is the physical volume. For somewhat larger energies, the same quantities can be described by chiral perturbation theory (chPT). For most quantities there is an intermediate energy regime, roughly $1/V<E<1/\sqrt{V}$, where the results of RMT and chPT agree with each other. We test these predictions by constructing the connected and disconnected scalar susceptibilities from Dirac spectra obtained in quenched SU(2) and SU(3) simulations with staggered fermions for a variety of lattice sizes and coupling constants. In deriving the predictions of chPT, it is important to take into account only those symmetries which are exactly realized on the lattice.

Higher-twist contributions to the Structure Functions coming from 4-fermion operators

We evaluate the contribution of a class of higher-twist operators to the lowest moment of the Structure Functions, by computing appropriate matrix elements of six four-fermion operators in the quenched approximation. Their perturbative renormalization constants and mixing coefficients are calculated in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme of dimensional regularization, using codes written in the algebraic manipulation computer language FORM.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering in next-to-leading order

We study the amplitude of deeply virtual Compton scattering in next-to-leading order of perturbation theory including the two-loop evolution effects for different sets of skewed parton distributions (SPDs). It turns out that in the minimal subtraction scheme the relative radiative corrections are of order 20-50%. We analyze the dependence of our predictions on the choice of SPD, that will allow to discriminate between possible models of SPDs from future high precision experimental data, and discuss shortly theoretical uncertainties induced by the radiative corrections.

Random Matrix Theory, Chiral Perturbation Theory, and Lattice Data

Recently, the chiral logarithms predicted by quenched chiral perturbation theory have been extracted from lattice calculations of hadron masses. We argue that the deviations of lattice results from random matrix theory starting around the so-called Thouless energy can be understood in terms of chiral perturbation theory as well. Comparison of lattice data with chiral perturbation theory formulae allows us to compute the pion decay constant. We present results from a calculation for quenched SU(2) with Kogut-Susskind fermions at β=2.0 and 2.2.

Ergodic Properties of Classical SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

We investigate the relationship between the Lyapunov exponents of periodic trajectories, the average and fluctuations of Lyapunov exponents of ergodic trajectories, and the ergodic autocorrelation time for the two-dimensional hyperbola billiard. We then study the fluctuation properties of the ergodic Lyapunov spectrum of classical SU(2) gauge theory on a lattice. Our results are consistent with the notion that this system is globally hyperbolic. Among the many powerful theorems applicable to such systems, we discuss one relating to the fluctuations in the entropy growth rate.

Physics for a Polarized Electron-Nucleon/Nucleus-Collider

A number of physics arguments for a high-luminosity high energy polarized Electron- Nucleon/Nucleus-Collider (i.e. with a luminosity of at least 10^{33} cm^{-2} sec^{-1} and an invariant energy squarred of at least s >= 100 GeV^2) are presented. The main purpose of this machine would be generally speaking the investigation of QCD beyond the twist-2 level respectively of nuclear physics beyond the level of 'effective' models. Specific topics are: twist-2 and twist-3 spin-asymmetries as probes of both the internal hadron structure and the hadronization process, Off-Forward-Parton-Distributions as a new dimension of QCD-physics, nuclear effects for the nucleon structure and nuclear effects for QCD-dynamics in nuclei. The last two topics are also of direct relevance for high-energy heavy-ion-collisons. We conclude that the need for such a collider is clear, if nuclear physics is to continue its development towards a comprehensive understanding of QCD phenomena.

Diffractive charged meson pair production

We investigate the possibility to measure the nonforward gluon distribution function by means of diffractively produced π^+π^- and K^+K^- pairs in polarized lepton nucleon scattering. The resulting cross sections are small and are dominated by the gluonic contribution. We find relatively large spin asymmetries, both for π^+π^- and for K^+K^- pairs.

Random Matrix Theory and Chiral Logarithms

Recently, the contributions of chiral logarithms predicted by quenched chiral perturbation theory have been extracted from lattice calculations of hadron masses. We argue that a detailed comparison of random matrix theory and lattice calculations allows for a precise determination of such corrections. We estimate the relative size of the m*log(m), m, and m^2 corrections to the chiral condensate for quenched SU(2).

Small eigenvalues of the SU(3) Dirac operator on the lattice and in Random Matrix Theory

We have calculated complete spectra of the staggered Dirac operator on the lattice in quenched SU(3) gauge theory for β= 5.4 and various lattice sizes. The microscopic spectral density, the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue, and the two-point spectral correlation function are analyzed. We find the expected agreement of the lattice data with universal predictions of the chiral unitary ensemble of random matrix theory up to a certain energy scale, the Thouless energy. The deviations from the universal predictions are determined using the disconnected scalar susceptibility. We find that the Thouless energy scales with the lattice size as expected from theoretical arguments making use of the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation.

Crossover to Non-universal Microscopic Spectral Fluctuations in Lattice Gauge Theory

The spectrum of the Dirac operator near zero virtuality obtained in lattice gauge simulations is known to be universally described by chiral random matrix theory. We address the question of the maximum energy for which this universality persists. For this purpose, we analyze large ensembles of complete spectra of the Euclidean Dirac operator for staggered fermions. We calculate the disconnected scalar susceptibility and the microscopic number variance for the chiral symplectic ensemble of random matrices and compare the results with lattice Dirac spectra for quenched SU(2). The crossover to a non-universal regime is clearly identified and found to scale with the square of the linear lattice size and with $f_π^2$, in agreement with theoretical expectations.

Universal and non-universal behavior in Dirac spectra

We have computed ensembles of complete spectra of the staggered Dirac operator using four-dimensional SU(2) gauge fields, both in the quenched approximation and with dynamical fermions. To identify universal features in the Dirac spectrum, we compare the lattice data with predictions from chiral random matrix theory for the distribution of the low-lying eigenvalues. Good agreement is found up to some limiting energy, the so-called Thouless energy, above which random matrix theory no longer applies. We determine the dependence of the Thouless energy on the simulation parameters using the scalar susceptibility and the number variance.
