Statistical Analysis of Freeway Traffic

Single-vehicle data of freeway traffic as well as selected Floating-Car (FC) data are analyzed in great detail. Traffic states are distinguished by means of aggregated data. We propose a method for a quantitative classification of these states. The data of individual vehicles allows for insights into the interaction of vehicles. The time-headway distribution reveals a characteristic structure dominated by peaks and controlled by the underlying traffic states. The tendency to reach a pleasant level of ``driving comfort'' gives rise to new $v(Δx)$-diagrams, known as Optimal-Velocity (OV) curves. The insights found at locally fixed detectors can be confirmed by FC data. In fundamental diagrams derived from local measurements interesting high-flow states can be observed.

A new cellular automata model for city traffic

We present a new cellular automata model of vehicular traffic in cities by combining ideas borrowed from the Biham-Middleton-Levine (BML) model of city traffic and the Nagel-Schreckenberg (NaSch) model of highway traffic. The model exhibits a dynamical phase transition to a completely jammed phase at a critical density which depends on the time periods of the synchronized signals.

Single-vehicle data of highway traffic - a statistical analysis

In the present paper single-vehicle data of highway traffic are analyzed in great detail. By using the single-vehicle data directly empirical time-headway distributions and speed-distance relations can be established. Both quantities yield relevant information about the microscopic states. Several fundamental diagrams are also presented, which are based on time-averaged quantities and compared with earlier empirical investigations. In the remaining part time-series analyses of the averaged as well as the single-vehicle data are carried out. The results will be used in order to propose objective criteria for an identification of the different traffic states, e.g. synchronized traffic.

Optimum ground states of generalized Hubbard models with next-nearest neighbour interaction

We investigate the stability domains of ground states of generalized Hubbard models with next-nearest neighbour interaction using the optimum groundstate approach. We focus on the $η$-pairing state with momentum P=0 and the fully polarized ferromagnetic state at half-filling. For these states exact lower bounds for the regions of stability are obtained in the form of inequalities between the interaction parameters. For the model with only nearest neighbour interaction we show that the bounds for the stability regions can be improved by considering larger clusters. Additional next-nearest neighbour interactions can lead to larger or smaller stability regions depending on the parameter values.

On the ubiquity of matrix-product states in one-dimensional stochastic processes with boundary interactions

Recently it has been shown that the zero-energy eigenstate -- corresponding to the stationary state -- of a stochastic Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbour interaction in the bulk and single-site boundary terms, can always be written in the form of a so-called matrix-product state. We generalize this result to stochastic Hamiltonians with arbitrary, but finite, interaction range. As an application two different particle-hopping models with three-site bulk interaction are studied. For these models which can be interpreted as cellular automata for traffic flow, we present exact solutions for periodic boundary conditions and some suitably chosen boundary interactions.

Metastable States in Cellular Automata for Traffic Flow

Measurements on real traffic have revealed the existence of metastable states with very high flow. Such states have not been observed in the Nagel-Schreckenberg (NaSch) model which is the basic cellular automaton for the description of traffic. Here we propose a simple generalization of the NaSch model by introducing a velocity-dependent randomization. We investigate a special case which belongs to the so-called slow-to-start rules. It is shown that this model exhibits metastable states, thus sheding some light on the prerequisites for the occurance of hysteresis effects in the flow-density relation.

Disorder Effects in CA-Models for Traffic Flow

We investigate the effect of quenched disorder in the Nagel-Schreckenberg model of traffic flow. Spatial inhomogenities, i.e. lattice sites where the braking probability is enlarged, are considered as well as particle disorder, i.e. cars of a different maximum velocity. Both types of disorder lead to segregated states.

Metastable States in CA models for Traffic Flow

Measurements of traffic flow show the existence of metastable states of very high throughput. These observations cannot be reproduced by the CA model of Nagel and Schreckenberg (NaSch model), not even qualitatively. Here we present two variants on the NaSch model with modified acceleration rules ('slow-to-start' rules). Although these models are still discrete in time and space, different types of metastable states can be observed.

Jamming Transition in CA Models for Traffic Flow

The cellular automaton model for traffic flow exhibits a jamming transition from a free-flow phase to a congested phase. In the deterministic case this transition corresponds to a critical point with diverging correlation length. We present data from numerical simulations which suggest the absence of critical behavior in the presence of noise. The transition of the deterministic case is smeared out and one only observes the remnants of the critical point.

The asymmetric exclusion process: Comparison of update procedures

The asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) has attracted a lot of interest not only because its many applications, e.g. in the context of the kinetics of biopolymerization and traffic flow theory, but also because it is a paradigmatic model for nonequilibrium systems. Here we study the ASEP for different types of updates, namely random-sequential, sequential, sublattice-parallel and parallel. In order to compare the effects of the different update procedures on the properties of the stationary state, we use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations and analytical methods, especially the so-called matrix-product Ansatz (MPA). We present in detail the exact solution for the model with sublattice-parallel and sequential updates using the MPA. For the case of parallel update, which is important for applications like traffic flow theory, we determine the phase diagram, the current, and density profiles based on Monte Carlo simulations. We furthermore suggest a MPA for that case and derive the corresponding matrix algebra.

Jamming transition in a cellular automaton model for traffic flow

The cellular automaton model for traffic flow exhibits a jamming transition from a free-flow phase to a congested phase. In the deterministic case this transition corresponds to a critical point with diverging correlation length. In the presence of noise, however, no consistent picture has emerged up to now. We present data from numerical simulations which suggest the absence of critical behavior. The transition of the deterministic case is smeared out and one only observes the remnants of the critical point.

The asymmetric exclusion model with sequential update

We present a solution for the stationary state of an asymmetric exclusion model with sequential update and open boundary conditions. We solve the model exactly for random hopping in both directions by applying a matrix-product formalism which was recently used to solve the model with sublattice-parallel update[1]. It is shown that the matrix-algebra describing the sequential update and sublattice-parallel update are identical and can be mapped onto the random sequential case treated by Derrida et al[2].

The Kasteleyn model and a cellular automaton approach to traffic flow

We propose a bridge between the theory of exactly solvable models and the investigation of traffic flow. By choosing the activities in an apropriate way the dimer configurations of the Kasteleyn model on a hexagonal lattice can be interpreted as space-time trajectories of cars. This then allows for a calculation of the flow-density relationship (fundamental diagram). We further introduce a closely-related cellular automaton model. This model can be viewed as a variant of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model in which the cars do not have a velocity memory. It is also exactly solvable and the fundamental diagram is calculated.

Pair correlation functions in one-dimensional correlated-hopping models

We investigate ground-state properties of two correlated-hopping electron models, the Hirsch and the Bariev model. Both models are of recent interest in the context of hole superconductivity. Applying the Lanczos technique to small clusters, we numerically determine the binding energy, the spin gaps, correlation functions, and other properties for various values of the bond-charge interaction parameter. Our results for small systems indicate that pairing is favoured in a certain parameter range. However, in contrast to the Bariev model, superconducting correlations are suppressed in the Hirsch model, for a bond-charge repulsion larger than a critical value.

$XXZ$ model as effective Hamiltonian for generalized Hubbard models with broken $η$-symmetry

We consider the limit of strong Coulomb attraction for generalized Hubbard models with $η$-symmetry. In this limit these models are equivalent to the ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg quantum spin chain. In order to study the behaviour of the superconducting phase in the electronic model under perturbations which break the $η$-symmetry we investigate the ground state of the ferromagnetic non-critical $XXZ$-chain in the sector with fixed magnetization. It turns out to be a large bound state of $N$ magnons. We find that the perturbations considered here lead to the disappearance of the off-diagonal longe-range order.

Discrete stochastic models for traffic flow

We investigate a probabilistic cellular automaton model which has been introduced recently. This model describes single-lane traffic flow on a ring and generalizes the asymmetric exclusion process models. We study the equilibrium properties and calculate the so-called fundamental diagrams (flow vs.\ density) for parallel dynamics. This is done numerically by computer simulations of the model and by means of an improved mean-field approximation which takes into account short-range correlations. For cars with maximum velocity 1 the simplest non-trivial approximation gives the exact result. For higher velocities the analytical results, obtained by iterated application of the approximation scheme, are in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations.

Critical exponents of a multicomponent anisotropic t-J model in one dimension

A recently presented anisotropic generalization of the multicomponent supersymmetric $t-J$ model in one dimension is investigated. This model of fermions with general spin-$S$ is solved by Bethe ansatz for the ground state and the low-lying excitations. Due to the anisotropy of the interaction the model possesses $2S$ massive modes and one single gapless excitation. The physical properties indicate the existence of Cooper-type multiplets of $2S+1$ fermions with finite binding energy. The critical behaviour is described by a $c=1$ conformal field theory with continuously varying exponents depending on the particle density. There are two distinct regimes of the phase diagram with dominating density-density and multiplet-multiplet correlations, respectively. The effective mass of the charge carriers is calculated. In comparison to the limit of isotropic interactions the mass is strongly enhanced in general.

Exact solution of a one-dimensional fermion model with interchain tunneling

A fermion model consisting of two chains with interchain tunneling is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe ansatz method. The interchain tunneling leads to Cooper pair like bound states and a threshold energy is required to overcome the binding energy. The correlation functions manifest superconducting properties.
