The lattice ghost propagator in Landau gauge up to three loops using Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory

We complete our high-accuracy studies of the lattice ghost propagator in Landau gauge in Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory up to three loops. We present a systematic strategy which allows to extract with sufficient precision the non-logarithmic parts of logarithmically divergent quantities as a function of the propagator momentum squared in the infinite-volume and $a\to 0$ limits. We find accurate coincidence with the one-loop result for the ghost self-energy known from standard Lattice Perturbation Theory and improve our previous estimate for the two-loop constant contribution to the ghost self-energy in Landau gauge. Our results for the perturbative ghost propagator are compared with Monte Carlo measurements of the ghost propagator performed by the Berlin Humboldt university group which has used the exponential relation between potentials and gauge links.

Results from 2+1 flavours of SLiNC fermions

QCD results are presented for a 2+1 flavour fermion clover action (which we call the SLiNC action). A method of tuning the quark masses to their physical values is discussed. In this method the singlet quark mass is kept fixed, which solves the problem of different renormalisations (for singlet and non-singlet quark masses) occuring for non-chirally invariant lattice fermions. This procedure enables a wide range of quark masses to be probed, including the case with a heavy up-down quark mass and light strange quark mass. Preliminary results show the correct splittings for the baryon (octet and) decuplet spectrum.

A Non-Perturbative Operator Product Expansion

Nucleon structure functions can be observed in Deep Inelastic Scattering experiments, but it is an outstanding challenge to confront them with fully non-perturbative QCD results. For this purpose we investigate the product of electromagnetic currents (with large photon momenta) between quark states (of low momenta). By means of an Operator Product Expansion the structure function can be decomposed into matrix elements of local operators, and Wilson coefficients. For consistency both have to be computed non-perturbatively. Here we present precision results for a set of Wilson coefficients. They are evaluated from propagators for numerous quark momenta on the lattice, where the use of chiral fermions suppresses undesired operator mixing. This over-determines the Wilson coefficients, but reliable results can be extracted by means of a Singular Value Decomposition.

Statistical structure and $γ$-decay properties of closed shell Pb nuclei

The level densities and gamma-ray strength functions of 205-208Pb have been measured with the Oslo method, utilizing the (3He, 3He' gamma) and (3He,alpha gamma) reactions on the target nuclei 206Pb and 208Pb. The extracted level densities are consistent with known discrete levels at low excitation energies. The entropies and temperatures in the micro-canonical ensemble have been deduced from the experimental level density. An average entropy difference of Delta S ~ 1.8 k_B has been observed between 205Pb and 206Pb. The gamma-ray strength functions in 205-208Pb are extracted and compared with two models; however, none of them describe the data adequately. Intermediate structures have been observed at lower gamma-ray energies in all the analyzed Pb nuclei. These structures are less pronounced while moving from the doubly-magic nucleus 208Pb to 205Pb.

Non-perturbative improvement of stout-smeared three flavour clover fermions

We discuss a 3-flavour lattice QCD action with clover improvement in which the fermion matrix has single level stout smearing for the hopping terms together with unsmeared links for the clover term. With the (tree-level) Symanzik improved gluon action this constitutes the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover or SLiNC action. To cancel O(a) terms the clover term coefficient has to be tuned. We present here results of a non-perturbative determination of this coefficient using the Schroedinger functional and as a by-product a determination of the critical hopping parameter. Comparisons of the results are made with lowest order perturbation theory.

A quantum criticality perspective on the charging of narrow quantum-dot levels

Understanding the charging of exceptionally narrow levels in quantum dots in the presence of interactions remains a challenge within mesoscopic physics. We address this fundamental question in the generic model of a narrow level capacitively coupled to a broad one. Using bosonization we show that for arbitrary capacitive coupling charging can be described by an analogy to the magnetization in the anisotropic Kondo model, featuring a low-energy crossover scale that depends in a power-law fashion on the tunneling amplitude to the level. Explicit analytical expressions for the exponent are derived and confirmed by detailed numerical and functional renormalization-group calculations.

Enhanced radiative strength in the quasi-continuum of 117Sn

Radiative strength functions of 117Sn has been measured below the neutron separation energy using the (3He,3He'gamma) reactions. An increase in the slope of the strength functions around E_gamma= 4.5 MeV indicates the onset of a resonance-like structure, giving a significant enhancement of the radiative strength function compared to standard models in the energy region 4.5 <= E_gamma <= 8.0 MeV. For the first time, the functional form of this resonance-like structure has been measured in an odd tin nucleus below neutron threshold in the quasi-continuum region.

Evidence for the pair-breaking process in 116,117Sn

The nuclear level densities of 116,117Sn below the neutron separation energy have been determined experimentally from the (3He,alpha gamma) and (3He,3He gamma') reactions, respectively. The level densities show a characteristic exponential increase and a difference in magnitude due to the odd-even effect of the nuclear systems. In addition, the level densities display pronounced step-like structures that are interpreted as signatures of subsequent breaking of nucleon pairs.

Higher-loop gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge from numerical stochastic perturbation theory

We present higher loop results for the gluon and ghost propagator in Landau gauge on the lattice calculated in numerical stochastic perturbation theory. We make predictions for the perturbative content of those propagators as function of the lattice momenta for finite lattices. To find out their nonperturbative contributions, the logarithmic definition of the gauge fields and the corresponding Faddeev-Popov operator have to be implemented in the Monte Carlo simulations.

Clover improvement for stout-smeared 2+1 flavour SLiNC fermions: non-perturbative results

We discuss an action in which the fermion matrix has single level stout smearing for the hopping terms together with unsmeared links for the clover term. With the (tree level) Symanzik improved gluon action this constitutes the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover or SLiNC action. To cancel O(a) terms the clover coefficient, csw, has to be tuned. We present here preliminary results of a non-perturbative determination of csw using the Schrodinger functional and as a by-product also a determination of the critical hopping parameter. A determination of the renormalisation constant for the local vector current is also given. Comparisons of the results are made with lowest order perturbation theory results.

On the applicability of bosonization and the Anderson-Yuval methods at the strong-coupling limit of quantum impurity problems

The applicability of bosonization and the Anderson-Yuval (AY) approach at strong coupling is investigated by considering two generic impurity models: the multichannel interacting resonant-level and the anisotropic Kondo models. The two methods differ in the renormalization of the conduction-electron density of states (DoS) near the impurity site. Reduction of the DoS, absent in bosonization but accounted for in the AY approach, is shown to be vital in some models yet redundant in others. The criterion being the stability of the strong-coupling fixed point. Renormalization of the DoS is essential for an unstable fixed point, but redundant when a decoupled entity with local dynamics is formed. This rule can be used to boost the accuracy of both methods at strong coupling.

Clover improvement for stout-smeared 2+1 flavour SLiNC fermions: perturbative results

For the Stout Link Non-perturbative Clover (SLiNC) action we determine in one-loop lattice perturbation theory the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$ and the clover parameter $c_{SW}$ which is needed for $\mathcal{O}(a)$ improvement. Performing this calculation off-shell we are also able to compute the non gauge invariant quark field improvement coefficient $c_{NGI}$. Additionally, we present first results for the renormalization factors of the scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial vector currents. We discuss mean field improvement for the SLiNC action.

The Landau gauge lattice ghost propagator in stochastic perturbation theory

We present one- and two-loop results for the ghost propagator in Landau gauge calculated in Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory (NSPT). The one-loop results are compared with available standard Lattice Perturbation Theory in the infinite-volume limit. We discuss in detail how to perform the different necessary limits in the NSPT approach and discuss a recipe to treat logarithmic terms by introducing ``finite-lattice logs''. We find agreement with the one-loop result from standard Lattice Perturbation Theory and estimate, from the non-logarithmic part of the ghost propagator in two-loop order, the unknown constant contribution to the ghost self-energy in the RI'-MOM scheme in Landau gauge. That constant vanishes within our numerical accuracy.

Nucleon structure in terms of OPE with non-perturbative Wilson coefficients

Lattice calculations could boost our understanding of Deep Inelastic Scattering by evaluating moments of the Nucleon Structure Functions. To this end we study the product of electromagnetic currents between quark states. The Operator Product Expansion (OPE) decomposes it into matrix elements of local operators (depending on the quark momenta) and Wilson coefficients (as functions of the larger photon momenta). For consistency with the matrix elements, we evaluate a set of Wilson coefficients non-perturbatively, based on propagators for numerous momentum sources, on a 24^3 x 48 lattice. The use of overlap quarks suppresses unwanted operator mixing and lattice artifacts. Results for the leading Wilson coefficients are extracted by means of Singular Value Decomposition.

Thermodynamic Properties of $^{56,57}$Fe

Nuclear level densities for $^{56,57}$Fe have been extracted from the primary $γ$-ray spectra using ($^3$He,$^3$He$^{\prime}γ$) and ($^3$He,$αγ$) reactions. Nuclear thermodynamic properties for $^{56}$Fe and $^{57}$Fe are investigated using the experimental level densities. These properties include entropy, Helmholtz free energy, caloric curves, chemical potential, and heat capacity. In particular, the breaking of Cooper pairs and single-quasiparticle entropy are discussed and shown to be important concepts for describing nuclear level density. Microscopic model calculations are performed for level densities of $^{56,57}$Fe. The experimental and calculated level densities are compared. The average number of broken Cooper pairs and the parity distribution are extracted as a function of excitation energy for $^{56,57}$Fe from the model calculations.

Perturbative determination of $c_{SW}$ for plaquette and Symanzik gauge action and stout link clover fermions

Using plaquette and Symanzik improved gauge action and stout link clover fermions we determine the improvement coefficient $c_{SW}$ in one-loop lattice perturbation theory from the off-shell quark-quark-gluon three-point function. In addition, we compute the coefficients needed for the most general form of quark field improvement and present the one-loop result for the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$. We discuss mean field improvement for $c_{SW}$ and $κ_c$ and the choice of the mean field coupling for the actions we have considered.

Renormalisation of Composite Operators in Lattice Perturbation Theory with Clover Fermions: Non-forward Matrix Elements

We consider the renormalisation of lattice QCD operators with one and two covariant derivatives related to the first and second moments of generalised parton distributions and meson distribution amplitudes. Employing the clover fermion action we calculate their non-forward quark matrix elements in one-loop lattice perturbation theory. For some representations of the hypercubic group commonly used in simulations we determine the sets of all possible mixing operators and compute the matrices of renormalisation factors in one-loop approximation. We describe how tadpole improvement is applied to the results.
