Nuclear level densities and gamma-ray strength functions in 44,45Sc

The scandium isotopes 44,45Sc have been studied with the 45Sc(3He,alpha gamma)44Sc and 45Sc(3He,3He' gamma)45Sc reactions, respectively. The nuclear level densities and gamma-ray strength functions have been extracted using the Oslo method. The experimental level densities are compared to calculated level densities obtained from a microscopic model based on BCS quasiparticles within the Nilsson level scheme. This model also gives information about the parity distribution and the number of broken Cooper pairs as a function of excitation energy. The experimental gamma-ray strength functions are compared to theoretical models of the E1, M1, and E2 strength, and to data from (gamma,n) and (gamma,p) experiments. The strength functions show an enhancement at low gamma energies that cannot be explained by the present, standard models.

The operator product expansion on the lattice

We investigate the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) on the lattice by directly measuring the product (where J is the vector current) and comparing it with the expectation values of bilinear operators. This will determine the Wilson coefficients in the OPE from lattice data, and so give an alternative to the conventional methods of renormalising lattice structure function calculations. It could also give us access to higher twist quantities such as the longitudinal structure function F_L = F_2 - 2 x F_1. We use overlap fermions because of their improved chiral properties, which reduces the number of possible operator mixing coefficients.

Distribution Amplitudes of Vector Mesons

Results are presented for the lowest moment of the distribution amplitude for the K-star vector meson. Both longitudinal and transverse moments are investigated. We use two flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions, together with a non-perturbative renormalisation of the matrix element.

Particle-number conservation in static-path approximation for thermal superfluid systems

By applying particle-number projection to the static-path approximation (SPA), the heat capacity and the breakdown of pairing correlations are investigated in the thermally excited, superfluid systems 172Yb, 94Mo, and 56Fe. For the heavy nucleus 172Yb, the heat capacities in both the SPA and the number-projected SPA (NPSPA) exhibit an S shape; the difference between the SPA and NPSPA heat-capacity curves is not very large and the particle-number projection thereby enhances the S shape already seen in the SPA. The temperature at which the S-shape of heat capacity curve occurs parallels the temperature of the breakdown of pairing correlations as indicated by the effective pairing gap. However, for the comparatively lighter nuclei 94Mo and 56Fe, the SPA does not produce an S-shaped heat capacity on its own; only after particle-number projection the S shape appears in the heat-capacity curve. For 94Mo, we compare the NPSPA result with thermal odd-even mass differences, which are regarded as a direct measure of the pairing gap.

Perturbative determination of $c_{SW}$ with Symanzik improved gauge action and stout smearing

We determine the improvement factor $c_{SW}$ in one-loop lattice perturbation theory for the plaquette and Symanzik improved gauge actions. The fermionic action is ${\mathcal{O}(a)}$ clover improved with one-time stout smearing. $c_{SW}$ is derived from the one-loop correction to the quark-quark-gluon vertex in the off-shell regime. We give a first numerical value for the one-loop contribution to the non gauge-invariant improvement coefficient $c_{NGI}$ for the quark field using the plaquette action. A discussion of mean field improvement is included.

The lattice gluon propagator in stochastic perturbation theory

We calculate loop contributions up to four loops to the Landau gauge gluon propagator in numerical stochastic perturbation theory. For different lattice volumes we carefully extrapolate the Euler time step to zero for the Langevin dynamics derived from the Wilson action. The one-loop result for the gluon propagator is compared to the infinite volume limit of standard lattice perturbation theory.

Reconstruction of nuclear charged fragment trajectories from a large gap sweeper magnet

A new method to reconstruct charged fragment four-momentum vectors from measured trajectories behind an open, large gap, magnetic dispersion element (a sweeper magnet) has been developed. In addition to the position and angle behind the magnet it includes the position measurement in the dispersive direction at the target. The method improves the energy and angle resolution of the reconstruction significantly for experiments with fast rare isotopes, where the beam size at the target position is large.

Observation of the First Excited State in 23O

The first excited state in neutron-rich 23O was observed in a (2p1n) knock-out reaction from 26Ne on a beryllium target at a beam energy of 86 MeV/A. The state is unbound with respect to neutron emission and was reconstructed from the invariant mass from the 22O fragment and the neutron. It is unbound by 45(2) keV corresponding to an excitation energy of 2.8(1) MeV. The non-observation of further resonances implies a predominantly direct reaction mechanism of the employed three-nucleon-removal reaction which suggests the assignment of the observed resonance to be the 5/2+ hole state.

Exploring Neutron-Rich Oxygen Isotopes with MoNA

The Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) was used in conjunction with a large-gap dipole magnet (Sweeper) to measure neutron-unbound states in oxygen isotopes close to the neutron dripline. While no excited states were observed in 24O, a resonance at 45(2) keV above the neutron separation energy was observed in 23O.

Energy distributions from three-body decaying many-body resonances

We compute energy distributions of three particles emerging from decaying many-body resonances. We reproduce the measured energy distributions from decays of two archetypal states chosen as the lowest $0^{+}$ and $1^{+}$-resonances in $^{12}$C populated in $β$-decays. These states are dominated by sequential, through the $^{8}$Be ground state, and direct decays, respectively. These decay mechanisms are reflected in the ``dynamic'' evolution from small, cluster or shell-model states, to large distances, where the coordinate or momentum space continuum wavefunctions are accurately computed.

New isotope 44Si and systematics of the production cross sections of the most neutron-rich nuclei

The results of measurements of the production of neutron-rich nuclei by the fragmentation of a 48Ca beam at 142 MeV/u are presented. Evidence was found for the production of a new isotope that is the most neutron-rich silicon nuclide, 44Si, in a net neutron pick-up process. A simple systematic framework was found to describe the production cross sections based on thermal evaporation from excited prefragments that allows extrapolation to other weak reaction products.

An Abelian two-Higgs model of strongly correlated electrons: phase structure, strengthening of phase transition and QCD at finite density

We investigate non-perturbative features of a three-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with singly- and doubly-charged scalar fields coupled to a single compact Abelian gauge field. The model is pretending to describe various planar systems of strongly correlated electrons such as high-Tc superconductivity in the overdoped regime and exotic materials possessing excitations with fractionalized quantum numbers. The complicated phase structure of the model is studied thoroughly using numerical tools and analytical arguments. In the three-dimensional space of coupling parameters we identify the Fermi liquid, the spin gap, the superconductor and the strange metallic phases. The behavior of three kinds of topological defects -- holon and spinon vortices and monopoles - is explored in various phases. We also observe a new effect, the strong enhancement of the phase transition strength reflected in a lower order of the transition: at sufficiently strong gauge coupling the two second order phase transitions -- corresponding to spinon-pair and holon condensation lines - join partially in the phase diagram and become a first order phase transition in that region. The last observation may have an analogue in Quantum Chromodynamics at non-zero temperature and finite baryon density. We argue that at sufficiently large baryon density the finite-temperature transition between the (3-flavor paired) color superconducting phase and the quark-gluon plasma phases should be much stronger compared with the transition between 2-flavor paired and 3-flavor paired superconducting phases.

Spin distribution of nuclear levels using static path approximation with random-phase approximation

We present a thermal and quantum-mechanical treatment of nuclear rotation using the formalism of static path approximation (SPA) plus random-phase approximation (RPA). Naive perturbation theory fails because of the presence of zero-frequency modes due to dynamical symmetry breaking. Such modes lead to infrared divergences. We show that composite zero-frequency excitations are properly treated within the collective coordinate method. The resulting perturbation theory is free from infrared divergences. Without the assumption of individual random spin vectors, we derive microscopically the spin distribution of the level density. The moment of inertia is thereby related to the spin-cutoff parameter in the usual way. Explicit calculations are performed for 56^Fe; various thermal properties are discussed. In particular, we demonstrate that the increase of the moment of inertia with increasing temperature is correlated with the suppression of pairing correlations.

Z=50 shell gap near $^{100}$Sn from intermediate-energy Coulomb excitations in even-mass $^{106--112}$Sn isotopes

Rare isotope beams of neutron-deficient $^{106,108,110}$Sn nuclei from the fragmentation of $^{124}$Xe were employed in an intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation experiment yielding $B(E2, 0^+_1 \to 2^+_1)$ transition strengths. The results indicate that these $B(E2,0^+_1 \to 2^+_1)$ values are much larger than predicted by current state-of-the-art shell model calculations. This discrepancy can be explained if protons from within the Z = 50 shell are contributing to the structure of low-energy excited states in this region. Such contributions imply a breaking of the doubly-magic $^{100}$Sn core in the light Sn isotopes.

Landau Gauge Gluon and Ghost Propagators from Lattice QCD

We report on recent numerical computations of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators as well as of the ghost-gluon vertex function in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory and in full QCD on the lattice. Special emphasis is paid to the low momentum region. In particular, we present new data for the gluon propagator at momenta below 300 MeV. We also discuss different systematic effects as there are finite-size, lattice discretization and Gribov copy but also unquenching effects. A MOM-scheme running coupling α_s(q^2) based on the ghost-gluon vertex is calculated and found to decrease for momenta below 550 MeV, even though the renormalization constant of the vertex deviates only weakly from being constant.

Operator product expansion on the lattice: analytic Wilson coefficients

We present first results for Wilson coefficients of operators up to first order in the covariant derivatives for the case of Wilson fermions. They are derived from the off-shell Compton scattering amplitude $\mathcal{W}_{μν}(a,p,q)$ of massless quarks with momentum $p$. The Wilson coefficients are classified according to the transformation of the corresponding operators under the hypercubic group H(4). We give selected examples for a special choice of the momentum transfer $q$. All Wilson coefficients are given in closed analytic form and in an expansion in powers of $a$ up to first corrections.

Lattice study of the infrared behavior of QCD Green's functions in Landau gauge

We summarize the current status of our numerical results for the gluon and ghost propagators and for the Kugo-Ojima confinement parameter in quenched SU(3) lattice Landau gauge theory. The data for the propagators are compared to our results obtained in the case of full QCD, simulated using two flavors of dynamical clover-improved Wilson fermions. We demonstrate that the infrared behavior of the ghost propagator is consistent with the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion. Explicit violation of reflection positivity by the gluon propagator is shown. Additionally, we present results of a running coupling constant both at low and at large momenta.
