Search for particle-bound 26-O and 28-F in p-stripping reactions

We have searched for particle-bound 26-O and 28-F isotopes in the reaction products of secondary 27-F and 29-Ne beams, respectively. No events have been observed. Upper limits for the respective production cross sections by one-p-stripping reactions are established under the assumption that 26-O and 28-F are particle bound. Since the experimental upper limits are much lower than common estimates we conclude that neither 26-O nor 28-F are likely particle bound.

The compact Q=2 Abelian Higgs model in the London limit: vortex-monopole chains and the photon propagator

The confining and topological properties of the compact Abelian Higgs model with doubly-charged Higgs field in three space-time dimensions are studied. We consider the London limit of the model. We show that the monopoles are forming chain-like structures (kept together by ANO vortices) the presence of which is essential for getting simultaneously permanent confinement of singly-charged particles and breaking of the string spanned between doubly-charged particles. In the confinement phase the chains are forming percolating clusters while in the deconfinement (Higgs) phase the chains are of finite size. The described picture is in close analogy with the synthesis of the Abelian monopole and the center vortex pictures in confining non--Abelian gauge models. The screening properties of the vacuum are studied by means of the photon propagator in the Landau gauge.

One-loop renormalisation of quark bilinears for overlap fermions with improved gauge actions

We compute lattice renormalisation constants of local bilinear quark operators for overlap fermions and improved gauge actions. Among the actions we consider are the Symanzik, Lüscher-Weisz, Iwasaki and DBW2 gauge actions. The results are given for a variety of $ρ$ parameters. We show how to apply mean field (tadpole) improvement to overlap fermions. The question, what is a good gauge action, is discussed from the perturbative point of view. Finally, we show analytically that the gauge dependent part of the self-energy and the amputated Green functions are independent of the lattice fermion representation, using either Wilson or overlap fermions.

Level densities and $γ$-ray strength functions in $^{170,171,172}$Yb

Level densities and radiative strength functions in $^{171}$Yb and $^{170}$Yb nuclei have been measured using the $^{171}$Yb($^3$He,$^3$He$^\primeγ$)$^{171}$Yb and $^{171}$Yb($^3$He,$αγ$)$^{170}$Yb reactions. New data on $^{171}$Yb are compared to a previous measurement for $^{171}$Yb from the $^{172}$Yb($^3$He,$αγ$)$^{171}$Yb reaction. Systematics of level densities and radiative strength functions in $^{170,171,172}$Yb are established. The entropy excess in $^{171}$Yb relative to the even-even nuclei $^{170,172}$Yb due to the unpaired neutron quasiparticle is found to be approximately 2$k_B$. Results for the radiative strength function from the two reactions lead to consistent parameters characterizing the ``pygmy'' resonances. Pygmy resonances in the $^{170,172}$Yb populated by the ($^3$He,$α$) reaction appear to be split into two components for both of which a complete set of resonance parameters are obtained.

Monopole Chains in the Compact Abelian Higgs Model with doubly-charged Matter Field

We study the properties of topological defects in the lattice compact Abelian Higgs Model with charge Q=2 matter field. We find that monopoles and antimonopoles form chain-like structures which are dense in the confinement/symmetric phase. In this phase the mentioned structures explain both the confinement of single-charged and the breaking of strings spanned between doubly-charged test particles. This observation helps to understand how the non-diagonal gluons, once taken into consideration in the Abelian projection of gluodynamics, could reproduce in this framework the string breaking for adjoint charges.

The influence of Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagator

The dependence of the gluon and ghost propagator in pure SU(3) gauge theory on the choice of Gribov copies in Landau gauge is studied. Simulations were performed on several lattice sizes at $β$=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. In the infrared region the ghost propagator turns out to depend on the choice, while the impact on the gluon propagator is not resolvable. Also the eigenvalue distribution of the Faddeev-Popov operator is sensitive to Gribov copies.

Radiative strength functions in 93-98Mo

Radiative strength functions (RSFs) in 93-98Mo have been extracted using the (3He,alpha gamma) and (3He,3He' gamma) reactions. The RSFs are U-shaped as function of gamma energy with a minimum at around E_gamma=3 MeV. The minimum values increase with neutron number due to the increase in the low-energy tail of the giant electric dipole resonance with nuclear deformation. The unexpected strong increase in strength below E_gamma=3 MeV, here called soft pole, is established for all 93-98Mo isotopes. The soft pole is present at all initial excitation energies in the 5-8 MeV region.

Perturbative Renormalisation of the Second Moment of Generalised Parton Distributions

We calculate the non-forward quark matrix elements of operators with two covariant derivatives needed for the renormalisation of the second moment of generalised parton distributions in one-loop lattice perturbation theory using Wilson fermions. For some representations of the hypercubic group commonly used in simulations we determine the sets of all possible mixing operators. For those representations the one-loop mixing matrices of renormalisation factors are found. Due to non-vanishing contributions of operators with external ordinary derivatives the number of contributing operators increases compared to forward matrix elements.

The gluon and ghost propagator and the influence of Gribov copies

The dependence of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators on the choice of Gribov copies is studied in pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory. Whereas the influence on the gluon propagator is small, the ghost propagator becomes clearly affected by the copies in the infrared region. We compare our data with the infrared exponents predicted by the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach

One-loop renormalisation for the second moment of GPDs with Wilson fermions

We calculate the non-forward quark matrix elements for operators with two covariant derivatives in one-loop lattice perturbation theory using Wilson fermions. These matrix elements are needed in the renormalisation of the second moment of generalised parton distributions measured in lattice QCD. For some commonly used representations of the hypercubic group we determine the sets of all mixing operators and find the matrices of mixing and renormalisation factors.

Phase Structure and Gauge Boson Propagator in the radially active 3D compact Abelian Higgs Model

Unfreezing the radial degree of freedom, we study the three-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with compact gauge field and fundamentally charged matter. For small quartic Higgs self coupling and finite gauge coupling the model possesses a first order transition from the confined/symmetric phase to the deconfined/Higgs phase separated at some hopping parameter $κ_c$. Latent heat and surface tension are obtained in the first order regime. At larger quartic coupling the first order transition ceases to exist, and the behavior becomes similar to that known from the London limit. These observations are complemented by a study of the photon propagator in Landau gauge in the two different regimes. The problems afflicting the gauge fixing procedure are carefully investigated. We propose an improved gauge fixing algorithm which uses a finite subgroup in a preselection/preconditioning stage. The computational gain in the expensive confinement region is a speed-up factor around 10. The propagator in momentum space has a non-zero anomalous dimension in the confined phase whereas it vanishes in the Higgs phase. As far as the gauge boson propagator is concerned, we find that the radially active Higgs field provides qualitatively no new effect compared to the radially frozen Higgs field studied before.

Large enhancement of radiative strength for soft transisitons in the quasicontinuum

Radiative strength functions (RSFs) for the 56,57-Fe nuclei below the separation energy are obtained from the 57-Fe(3-He,alpha gamma)56-Fe and 57-Fe(3-He,3-He' gamma)57-Fe reactions, respectively. An enhancement of more than a factor of ten over common theoretical models of the soft (E_gamma ~< 2 MeV) RSF for transitions in the quasicontinuum (several MeV above the yrast line) is observed. Two-step cascade intensities with soft primary transitions from the 56-Fe(n,2gamma)57-Fe reaction confirm the enhancement.

Structure functions and form factors close to the chiral limit from lattice QCD

Results for nucleon matrix elements (arising from moments of structure functions) and form factors from a mixture of runs using Wilson, clover and overlap fermions (both quenched and unquenched) are presented and compared in an effort to explore the size of the chiral `regime', lattice spacing errors and quenching artefacts. While no run covers this whole range of effects the partial results indicate a picture of small lattice spacing errors, small quenching effects and only reaching the chiral regime at rather light quark masses.

Establishment of M1 multipolarity of a 6.5 mu_N^2 resonance in 172-Yb at E_gamma=3.3 MeV

Two-step-cascade spectra in 172-Yb have been measured after thermal neutron capture. They are compared to calculations based on experimental values of the level density and radiative strength function (RSF) obtained from the 173-Yb(3-He,alpha gamma)172-Yb reaction. The multipolarity of a 6.5(15) mu_N^2 resonance at E_gamma=3.3(1) MeV in the RSF is determined to be M1 by this comparison.

Quark spectra and light hadron phenomenology from overlap fermions with improved gauge field action

We present first results from a simulation of quenched overlap fermions with improved gauge field action. Among the quantities we study are the spectral properties of the overlap operator, the chiral condensate and topological charge, quark and hadron masses, and selected nucleon matrix elements. To make contact with continuum physics, we compute the renormalization constants of quark bilinear operators in perturbation theory and beyond.

Decoherence in Disordered Conductors at Low Temperatures, the effect of Soft Local Excitations

The conduction electrons' dephasing rate, $τ_ϕ^{-1}$, is expected to vanish with the temperature. A very intriguing apparent saturation of this dephasing rate in several systems was recently reported at very low temperatures. The suggestion that this represents dephasing by zero-point fluctuations has generated both theoretical and experimental controversies. We start by proving that the dephasing rate must vanish at the $T\to 0$ limit, unless a large ground state degeneracy exists. This thermodynamic proof includes most systems of relevance and it is valid for any determination of $τ_ϕ$ from {\em linear} transport measurements. In fact, our experiments demonstrate unequivocally that indeed when strictly linear transport is used, the apparent low-temperature saturation of $τ_ϕ$ is eliminated. However, the conditions to be in the linear transport regime are more strict than hitherto expected. Another novel result of the experiments is that introducing heavy nonmagnetic impurities (gold) in our samples produces, even in linear transport, a shoulder in the dephasing rate at very low temperatures. We then show theoretically that low-lying local defects may produce a relatively large dephasing rate at low temperatures. However, as expected, this rate in fact vanishes when $T \to 0$, in agreement with our experimental observations.

The photon propagator in compact QED_{2+1}: the effect of wrapping Dirac strings

We discuss the influence of closed Dirac strings on the photon propagator in the Landau gauge emerging from a study of the compact U(1) gauge model in 2+1 dimensions. This gauge also minimizes the total length of the Dirac strings. Closed Dirac strings are stable against local gauge-fixing algorithms only due to the torus boundary conditions of the lattice. We demonstrate that these left-over Dirac strings are responsible for the previously observed unphysical behavior of the propagator of space-like photons (D_T) in the deconfinement (high temperature) phase. We show how one can monitor the number N_3 of thermal Dirac strings which allows to separate the propagator measurements into N_3 sectors. The propagator in N_3 \neq 0 sectors is characterized by a non--zero mass and an anomalous dimension similarly to the confinement phase. Both mass squared and anomalous dimension are found to be proportional to N_3. Consequently, in the N_3=0 sector the unphysical behavior of the D_T photon propagator is cured and the deviation from the free massless propagator disappears.
