Distribution Amplitudes of Pseudoscalar Mesons

We present results for the first two moments of the distribution amplitudes of pseudoscalar mesons. Using two flavors of non-perturbatively improved clover fermions and non-perturbative renormalization of the matrix elements we perform both chiral and continuum extrapolations and compare with recent results from models and experiments.

One-loop Renormalisation of Lattice QCD Operators for Non-forward Matrix Elements: From Clover to Overlap Fermions

We consider the renormalisation of composite quark-antiquark operators with one and two lattice covariant derivatives related to the lowest moments of generalised parton distributions (GPDs) and meson distribution amplitudes (DAs). Their matrix elements are calculated in one-loop lattice perturbation theory for non-zero momentum transfer. Using clover and overlap fermions we present the resulting matrices of mixing and renormalisation factors. For overlap fermions we explicitly check the absence of mixing with lower-dimensional operators of different chirality in particular representations of the hypercubic group. This feature favours the use of chiral fermions.

Moments of pseudoscalar meson distribution amplitudes from the lattice

Based on lattice simulations with two flavours of dynamical, O(a)-improved Wilson fermions we present results for the first two moments of the distribution amplitudes of pseudoscalar mesons at several values of the valence quark masses. By extrapolating our results to the physical masses of up/down and strange quarks, we find the first two moments of the K^+ distribution amplitude and the second moment of the pi^+ distribution amplitude. We use nonperturbatively determined renormalisation coefficients to obtain results in the MSbar scheme. At a scale of 4 GeV^2 we find a_2^pi=0.201(114) for the second Gegenbauer moment of the pion's distribution amplitude, while for the kaon, a_1^K=0.0453(9)(29) and a_2^K=0.175(18)(47).

Breaking of nucleon Cooper pairs at finite temperature in 93-98Mo

The S shape of the canonical heat capacity is known as a signature of the pairing transition and along an isotopic chain it is significantly more pronounced for nuclei with an even number of neutrons than with an odd number. Although the heat capacities extracted from experimental level densities in 93-98Mo exhibit a clear S shape, they do not show such an odd-even staggering. To understand the underlying physics, we analyze thermal quantities evaluated from the partition function calculated using the static-path plus random-phase approximation (SPA+RPA) in a monopole pairing model with number-parity projection. The calculated level densities reproduce very well the experimental data and they also agree with estimates using the back-shifted Fermi-gas model. We clarify the reason why the heat capacities for Mo isotopes do not show odd-even staggering of the S shape. We also discuss thermal odd-even mass differences in 94-97Mo using the three-, four-, and five-point formula. These thermal mass differences are regarded as indicators of pairing correlations at finite temperature.

Hadron spectrum, quark masses and decay constants from light overlap fermions on large lattices

We present results from a simulation of quenched overlap fermions with Lüscher-Weisz gauge field action on lattices up to $24^3 48$ and for pion masses down to $\approx 250$ MeV. Among the quantities we study are the pion, rho and nucleon masses, the light and strange quark masses, and the pion decay constant. The renormalization of the scalar and axial vector currents is done nonperturbatively in the $RI-MOM$ scheme. The simulations are performed at two different lattice spacings, $a \approx 0.1$ fm and $\approx 0.15$ fm, and on two different physical volumes, to test the scaling properties of our action and to study finite volume effects. We compare our results with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory and compute several of its low-energy constants. The pion mass is computed in sectors of fixed topology as well.

Microcanonical entropies and radiative strength functions of $^{50,51}$V

The level densities and radiative strength functions (RSFs) of $^{50,51}$V have been extracted using the ($^3$He,$αγ$) and ($^3$He,$^3$He$^{\prime} γ$) reactions, respectively. From the level densities, microcanonical entropies are deduced. The high $γ$-energy part of the RSF is described by the giant electric dipole resonance. A significant enhancement over the predicted strength in the region of $E_γ \lesssim 3$ MeV is seen, which at present has no theoretical explanation.

Compilation of Giant Electric Dipole Resonances Built on Excited States

Giant Electric Dipole Resonance (GDR) parameters for gamma decay to excited states with finite spin and temperature are compiled. Over 100 original works have been reviewed and from some 70 of which more than 300 parameter sets of hot GDR parameters for different isotopes, excitation energies, and spin regions have been extracted. All parameter sets have been brought onto a common footing by calculating the equivalent Lorentzian parameters. The current compilation is complementary to an earlier compilation by Samuel S. Dietrich and Barry L. Berman (At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 38(1988)199-338) on ground-state photo-neutron and photo-absorption cross sections and their Lorentzian parameters. A comparison of the two may help shed light on the evolution of GDR parameters with temperature and spin. The present compilation is current as of January 2006.

Level density of $^{56}$Fe and low-energy enhancement of $γ$-strength function

The $^{55}$Mn$(d,n)^{56}$Fe differential cross section is measured at $E_d=7$ MeV\@. The $^{56}$Fe level density obtained from neutron evaporation spectra is compared to the level density extracted from the $^{57}$Fe$(^3$He,$αγ)^{56}$Fe reaction by the Oslo-type technique. Good agreement is found between the level densities determined by the two methods. With the level density function obtained from the neutron evaporation spectra, the $^{56}$Fe $γ$-strength function is also determined from the first-generation $γ$ matrix of the Oslo experiment. The good agreement between the past and present results for the $γ$-strength function supports the validity of both methods and is consistent with the low-energy enhancement of the $γ$ strength below $\sim 4$ MeV first discovered by the Oslo method in iron and molybdenum isotopes.

Level densities and thermodynamical quantities of heated 93-98Mo isotopes

Level densities for 93-98Mo have been extracted using the (3He,alpha gamma) and (3He,3He' gamma) reactions. From the level densities thermodynamical quantities such as temperature and heat capacity can be deduced. Data have been analyzed by utilizing both the microcanonical and the canonical ensemble. Structures in the microcanonical temperature are consistent with the breaking of nucleon Cooper pairs. The S-shape of the heat capacity curves found within the canonical ensemble is interpreted as consistent with a pairing phase transition with a critical temperature for the quenching of pairing correlations at T_c ~ 0.7-1.0 MeV.

Gauge-variant propagators and the running coupling from lattice QCD

On the occasion of the 70th birthday of Prof. Adriano Di Giacomo we report on recent numerical computations of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators as well as of a non-symmetric MOM-scheme ghost-gluon vertex in quenched and full lattice QCD. Special emphasis is paid to the Gribov copy problem and to the unquenching effect. The corresponding running coupling α_s(q^2) is found and shown to decrease for q^2 \le 0.3 GeV^2 in the infrared limit. No indication for a non-trivial infrared fixed point is seen in agreement with findings from truncated systems of Dyson-Schwinger equations treated on a four-dimensional torus.

Primary versus secondary gamma intensities in 171Yb(n_th,gamma)

The two published literature values [Greenwood et al., Nucl. Phys. A252, 260 (1975) and Gelletly et al., J. Phys. G 11, 1055 (1985)] for absolute primary gamma intensities following thermal neutron capture of 171Yb differ in average by a factor of three. We have resolved this conflict in favor of Greenwood et al. by a measurement of primary versus secondary intensities.

Phase structure of an Abelian two-Higgs model and high temperature superconductors

We study the phase structure of a three dimensional Abelian Higgs model with singly- and doubly-charged scalar fields coupled to a compact Abelian gauge field. The model is pretending to describe systems of strongly correlated electrons such as high-Tc superconductivity in overdoped regime and exotic phases supporting excitations with fractionalized quantum numbers. We identify the Fermi liquid, the spin gap, the superconductor and the strange metallic phases in which densities and properties of holon and spinon vortices and monopoles are explored. The phase diagram in the 3D coupling space is predicted. We show that at sufficiently strong gauge coupling the spinon-pair and holon condensation transitions merge together and become, unexpectedly, first order.

Landau gauge ghost and gluon propagators and the Faddeev-Popov operator spectrum

In this talk we report on a recent lattice investigation of the Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators in pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory with a special emphasis on the Gribov copy problem. In the (infrared) region of momenta $q^2 \le 0.3 \mathrm{GeV}^2$ we find the corresponding MOM scheme running coupling $α_s(q^2)$ to rise in $q$. We also report on a first SU(3) computation of the ghost-gluon vertex function showing that it deviates only weakly from being constant. In addition we study the spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Faddeev-Popov operator as well as the spectral representation of the ghost propagator.

Perturbative Renormalisation for Low Moments of Generalised Parton Distributions with Clover Fermions

We present the non-forward quark matrix elements of operators with one and two covariant derivatives needed for the renormalisation of the first and second moments of generalised parton distributions in one-loop lattice perturbation theory using clover fermions. For some representations of the hypercubic group commonly used in simulations we define the sets of possible mixing operators and compute the one-loop mixing matrices of renormalisation factors. Tadpole improvement is applied to the results and some numerical examples are presented.

Perturbative renormalisation of quark bilinear operators for overlap fermions with and without stout links and improved gauge action

We calculate lattice renormalisation constants of local and one-link quark operators for overlap fermions and improved gauge actions in one-loop perturbation theory. For the local operators we stout smear the SU(3) links in the fermionic action. Using the popular tadpole improved Lüscher-Weisz actions at $β=8.45$ and $β=8.0$ we present numerical values for the Z factors in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme (partly as function of the stout smearing strength). We compare various levels of mean field (tadpole) improvement which have been applied to our results.

Studying the infrared region in Landau gauge QCD

We report on the progress we made in studying the infrared behavior of the ghost and gluon dressing functions in Landau gauge. Related to this we also investigate a running coupling given in terms of those functions and compare our results to those coming from the Dyson-Schwinger approach. We present first numerical results for the SU(3) ghost-ghost-gluon vertex renormalization constant. In addition the spectrum of low-lying eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Faddeev-Popov operator is determined. The saturation of the ghost propagator in terms of those eigenvalues and eigenmodes is discussed at lower momenta.

Towards the infrared limit in SU(3) Landau gauge lattice gluodynamics

We study the behavior of the gluon and ghost dressing functions in SU(3) Landau gauge at low momenta available on lattice sizes 12^4-32^4 at $β$=5.8, 6.0 and 6.2. We demonstrate the ghost dressing function to be systematically dependent on the choice of Gribov copies, while the influence on the gluon dressing function is not resolvable. The running coupling given in terms of these functions is found to be decreasing for momenta q<0.6 GeV. We study also effects of the finite volume and of the lattice discretization.

Renormalisation of one-link quark operators for overlap fermions with Lüscher-Weisz gauge action

We compute lattice renormalisation constants of one-link quark operators ({\it i.e.} operators with one covariant derivative) for overlap fermions and Lüscher-Weisz gauge action in one-loop perturbation theory. Among others, such operators enter the calculation of moments of polarised and unpolarised hadron structure functions. Results are given for β=8.45, β=8.0 and mass parameter ρ=1.4, which are commonly used in numerical simulations. We apply mean field (tadpole) improvement to our results.
