Inverse cascades in turbulence and the case of rotating flows

We first summarize briefly several properties concerning the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) turbulence, with an emphasis on the inverse cascade of energy to the largest accessible scale of the system. In order to study a similar phenomenon in three-dimensional (3D) turbulence undergoing strong solid-body rotation, we test a previously developed Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model against a high-resolution direct numerical simulation of rotating turbulence on a grid of $3072^3$ points. We then describe new numerical results on the inverse energy cascade in rotating flows using this LES model and contrast the case of 2D versus 3D forcing, as well as non-helical forcing (i.e., with weak overall alignment between velocity and vorticity) versus the fully helical Beltrami case, both for deterministic and random forcing. The different scaling of the inverse energy cascade can be attributed to the dimensionality of the forcing, with, in general, either a $k_{\perp}^{-3}$ or a $k_{\perp}^{-5/3}$ energy spectrum of slow modes at large scales, perpendicular referring to the direction of rotation. We finally invoke the role of shear in the case of a strongly anisotropic deterministic forcing, using the so-called ABC flow.

Radium ion: A possible candidate for measuring atomic parity violation

Single trapped and laser cooled Radium ion as a possible candidate for measuring the parity violation induced frequency shift has been discussed here. Even though the technique to be used is similar to that proposed by Fortson [1], Radium has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most attractive part of Radium ion as compared to that of Barium ion is its mass which comes along with added complexity of instability as well as other issues which are discussed here

Driven transverse shear waves in a strongly coupled dusty plasma

The linear dispersion properties of transverse shear waves in a strongly coupled dusty plasma are experimentally studied by exciting them in a controlled manner with a variable frequency external source. The dusty plasma is maintained in the strongly coupled fluid regime with (1 < Gamma << Gamma_c) where Gamma is the Coulomb coupling parameter and Gamma_c is the crystallization limit. A dispersion relation for the transverse waves is experimentally obtained over a frequency range of 0.1 Hz to 2 Hz and found to show good agreement with viscoelastic theoretical results.

Experimental study of nonlinear dust acoustic solitary waves in a dusty plasma

The excitation and propagation of finite amplitude low frequency solitary waves are investigated in an Argon plasma impregnated with kaolin dust particles. A nonlinear longitudinal dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by pulse modulating the discharge voltage with a negative potential. It is found that the velocity of the solitary wave increases and the width decreases with the increase of the modulating voltage, but the product of the solitary wave amplitude and the square of the width remains nearly constant. The experimental findings are compared with analytic soliton solutions of a model Kortweg-de Vries equation.

Quantum well states in Fe/Nb(001) multilayers: First principles study

We present a first-principles study to understand the phenomena of interlayer exchange coupling in Fe/Nb multilayers using the linearized-muffin-tin-orbitals method within the generalized gradient approximation. We find that the exchange coupling oscillates with both short and long periodicities, which have been examined in terms of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) model as well as the quantum well (QW) model. We have investigated the behavior of the exchange coupling by artificially varying moments of Fe atoms in ferromagnetic layers. For a small moment of Fe, the coupling shows bilinearity in the magnetic moments, implying its RKKY character. However, at higher moments close to that of bulk Fe, the saturation of long-period oscillations is in accordance with the QW model. Quantum well dispersions around the Fermi level demonstrate that the majority-spin bands contribute largely to the formation of quantum well states, which we analyze quantitatively by making use of the phase accumulation model. Our analysis indicates that the quantum well model gives a better description of the oscillatory behavior of the exchange coupling in Fe/Nb multilayers.

Ferromagnetism in nanoscale BiFeO3

A remarkably high saturation magnetization of ~0.4mu_B/Fe along with room temperature ferromagnetic hysteresis loop has been observed in nanoscale (4-40 nm) multiferroic BiFeO_3 which in bulk form exhibits weak magnetization (~0.02mu_B/Fe) and an antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic hysteresis loops, however, exhibit exchange bias as well as vertical asymmetry which could be because of spin pinning at the boundaries between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domains. Interestingly, like in bulk BiFeO_3, both the calorimetric and dielectric permittivity data in nanoscale BiFeO_3 exhibit characteristic features at the magnetic transition point. These features establish formation of a true ferromagnetic-ferroelectric system with a coupling between the respective order parameters in nanoscale BiFeO_3.

Particle size dependence of magnetization and phase transition near T_N in multiferroic BiFeO3

We report results of a comprehensive study of the phase transition at T_N (~643 K) as a function of particle size in multiferroic BiFeO3 system. We employed electrical, thermal, and temperature dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies in order to characterize the transition in a host of samples. We also carried out detailed magnetic measurements over a temperature regime 2-300 K under a magnetic field 100-10000 Oe both on bulk and nano-crystalline systems. While in the bulk system a sharp endothermic peak at T_N together with a broad feature, ranging over nearly ~150 K (Delta_T), could be observed in calorimetry, the nanoscale systems exhibit only the broad feature. The characteristic dielectric anomaly, expected at T_N, is found to occur both at T_O and T_N across Delta_T in the bulk sample. The Maxwell-Wagner component due to interfaces between heterogenous regions with different conductivities is also present. The magnetic properties, measured at lower temperature, corroborate our observations in calorimetry. The metastability increases in the nanoscale BiFeO3 with divergence between zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization below ~100 K and faster magnetic relaxation. Interestingly, in nanoscale BiFeO3, one also observes finite coercivity at lower temperature which points out that suitable design of particle size and shape may induce ferromagnetism. The inhomogeneous distribution of Bi/Fe-ions and/or oxygen non-stoichiometry seems to be giving rise to broad features in thermal, magnetic as well as in electrical responses.

Collective dynamics in crystalline polymorphs of ZnCl$_{2}$: potential modelling and inelastic neutron scattering study

We report a phonon density of states measurement of $α$-ZnCl$_{2}$ using the coherent inelastic neutron scattering technique and a lattice dynamical calculation in four crystalline phases of ZnCl$_{2}$ using a transferable interatomic potential. The model calculations agree reasonably well with the available experimental data on the structures, specific heat, Raman frequencies and their pressure variation in various crystalline phases. The calculated results have been able to provide a fair description of the vibrational as well as the thermodynamic properties of ZnCl$_{2}$ in all its four phases.

Lattice vibrations in high-pressure phases of LiYF$_{4}$

Possible variations in the dynamical behaviour of LiYF$_{4}$ due to its several structural changes under pressure are examined by making use of the complementary techniques of quasi-harmonic lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations. The phonon spectra in the entire Brillouin zone together with the respective Gibbs free energies are calculated for the three high-pressure polymorphs of LiYF$_{4}$ (that are stable at T = 0) with a view to better understand their relative stabilities as functions of pressure and temperature. The present work predicts anomalous thermal expansion at low temperatures in phases I and IIa while irreversibilty of phase II $\to$ phase III transition on subsequent pressure release. Molecular dynamics simulations provide qualitative impressions about a temperature-driven second-order transition and also of kinetic effects in the subsequent pressure-driven first-order phase transformation.

The On-Orbit Performance of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer

We report the first year on-orbit performance results for the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer that is performing a survey of the sky in two ultraviolet bands. The instrument comprises a 50 cm diameter modified Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 1.25 degree field of view, selectable imaging and objective grism spectroscopic modes, and an innovative optical system with a thin-film multilayer dichroic beam splitter that enables simultaneous imaging by a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay line readout detectors. Initial measurements demonstrate that GALEX is performing well, meeting its requirements for resolution, efficiency, astrometry, bandpass definition and survey sensitivity.

Vibrational and thermodynamic properties of high-pressure phases in LiYF_4

Possible variations in the dynamical behaviour of LiYF$_{4}$ due to its structural changes following several pressure-induced phase transitions are examined by making use of the complementary techniques of quasi-harmonic lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulation. The phonon spectra in the entire Brillouin zone and the respective Gibbs free energies are calculated for the three high-pressure polymorphs of LiYF$_{4}$ that are stable at T = 0, with an aim to understand their relative stabilities as functions of pressure and temperature in terms of volume compression and vibrational entropy. Molecular dynamics simulations provide qualitative impressions about a temperature-driven second-order transformation and also of kinetic effects in the subsequent pressure-driven first-order phase transition. In addition, the calculations predict anomalous thermal expansion at low temperature in phases I and IIa while irreversibilty of phase II $\to$ phase III transition on subsequent pressure release.

Driven response of time delay coupled limit cycle oscillators

We study the periodic forced response of a system of two limit cycle oscillators that interact with each other via a time delayed coupling. Detailed bifurcation diagrams in the parameter space of the forcing amplitude and forcing frequency are obtained for various interesting limits using numerical and analytical means. In particular, the effects of the coupling strength, the natural frequency spread of the two oscillators and the time delay parameter on the size and nature of the entrainment domain are delineated. The system is found to display a nonlinear response on certain critical contours in the space of the coupling strength and time delay. Time delay offers a novel tuning knob for controlling the system response over a wide range of frequencies and this may have important practical applications.

Instability of Shear Waves in an Inhomogeneous Strongly Coupled Dusty Plasma

It is demonstrated that low frequency shear modes in a strongly coupled, inhomogeneous, dusty plasma can grow on account of an instability involving the dynamical charge fluctuations of the dust grains. The instability is driven by the gradient of the equilibrium dust charge density and is associated with the finite charging time of the dust grains. The present calculations, carried out in the generalized hydrodynamic viscoelastic formalism, also bring out important modifications in the threshold and growth rate of the instability due to collective effects associated with coupling to the compressional mode.

Experimental Evidence of Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators

Experimental observations of time delay induced amplitude death in a pair of coupled nonlinear electronic circuits that are individually capable of exhibiting limit cycle oscillations are described. In particular, the existence of multiply connected death islands in the parameter space of the coupling strength and the time delay parameter for coupled identical oscillators is established. The existence of such regions was predicted earlier on theoretical grounds in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5109 (1998); Physica 129D, 15 (1999)]. The experiments also reveal the occurrence of multiple frequency states, frequency suppression of oscillations with increased time delay and the onset of both in-phase and anti-phase collective oscillations.

Dynamics of a Limit Cycle Oscillator under Time Delayed Linear and Nonlinear Feedbacks

We study the effects of time delayed linear and nonlinear feedbacks on the dynamics of a single Hopf bifurcation oscillator. Our numerical and analytic investigations reveal a host of complex temporal phenomena such as phase slips, frequency suppression, multiple periodic states and chaos. Such phenomena are frequently observed in the collective behavior of a large number of coupled limit cycle oscillators. Our time delayed feedback model offers a simple paradigm for obtaining and investigating these temporal states in a single oscillator. We construct a detailed bifurcation diagram of the oscillator as a function of the time delay parameter and the driving strengths of the feedback terms. We find some new states in the presence of the quadratic nonlinear feedback term with interesting characteristics like birhythmicity, phase reversals, radial trapping, phase jumps and spiraling patterns in the amplitude space. Our results may find useful applications in physical, chemical or biological systems.

Time Delay Effects on Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators at Hopf Bifurcation

We present a detailed study of the effect of time delay on the collective dynamics of coupled limit cycle oscillators at Hopf bifurcation. For a simple model consisting of just two oscillators with a time delayed coupling, the bifurcation diagram obtained by numerical and analytical solutions shows significant changes in the stability boundaries of the amplitude death, phase locked and incoherent regions. A novel result is the occurrence of amplitude death even in the absence of a frequency mismatch between the two oscillators. Similar results are obtained for an array of N oscillators with a delayed mean field coupling and the regions of such amplitude death in the parameter space of the coupling strength and time delay are quantified. Some general analytic results for the N tending to infinity (thermodynamic) limit are also obtained and the implications of the time delay effects for physical applications are discussed.

Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators

We investigate the dynamical behaviour of two limit cycle oscillators that interact with each other via time delayed coupling and find that time delay can lead to amplitude death of the oscillators even if they have the same frequency. We demonstrate that this novel regime of amplitude "death" also exists for large collections of coupled identical oscillators and provide quantitative measures of this death region in the parameter space of coupling strength and time delay. Its implication for certain biological and physical applications is also pointed out.
