Multidimensional integrable systems from contact geometry

Upon having presented a bird's eye view of history of integrable systems, we give a brief review of certain earlier advances (arXiv:1401.2122 & arXiv:1812.02263) in the longstanding problem of search for partial differential systems in four independent variables, often referred to as (3+1)-dimensional or 4D systems, that are integrable in the sense of soliton theory. Namely, we review a recent construction for a large new class of (3+1)-dimensional integrable systems with Lax pairs involving contact vector fields. This class contains inter alia two infinite families of such systems, thus establishing that there is significantly more integrable (3+1)-dimensional systems than it was believed for a long time. In fact, the construction under study yields (3+1)-dimensional integrable generalizations of many well-known dispersionless integrable (2+1)-dimensional systems like the dispersionless KP equation, as well as a first example of a (3+1)-dimensional integrable system with an algebraic, rather than rational, nonisospectral Lax pair. To demonstrate the versatility of the construction in question, we employ it here to produce novel integrable (3+1)-dimensional generalizations for the following (2+1)-dimensional integrable systems: dispersionless BKP, dispersionless asymmetric Nizhnik--Veselov--Novikov, dispersionless Gardner, and dispersionless modified KP equations, and the generalized Benney system.

Integrability of anti-self-dual vacuum Einstein equations with nonzero cosmological constant: an infinite hierarchy of nonlocal conservation laws

We present an infinite hierarchy of nonlocal conservation laws for the Przanowski equation, an integrable second-order PDE locally equivalent to anti-self-dual vacuum Einstein equations with nonzero cosmological constant. The hierarchy in question is constructed using a nonisospectral Lax pair for the equation under study. As a byproduct, we obtain an infinite-dimensional differential covering over the Przanowski equation.

The Palatini star: exact solutions of the modified Lane-Emden equation

Two exact solutions for $n=0$ and $n=1$ of the Palatini-modified Lane-Emden equation are found. We have employed these solutions to describe a Palatini-Newtonian neutron star and compared the result with the pure Newtonian counterpart. It turned out that for the negative parameter of the Starobinsky model the star is heavier and larger.

Integrable (3+1)-dimensional system with an algebraic Lax pair

We present a first example of an integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless system with nonisospectral Lax pair involving algebraic, rather than rational, dependence on the spectral parameter, thus showing that the class of integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems with nonisospectral Lax pairs is significantly more diverse than it appeared before. The Lax pair in question is of the type recently introduced in [A. Sergyeyev, Lett. Math. Phys. 108 (2018), no. 2, 359-376, arXiv:1401.2122 ].

Contact Lax pairs and associated (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless systems

We review the recent approach to the construction of (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless partial differential systems based on their contact Lax pairs and the related $R$-matrix theory for the Lie algebra of functions with respect to the contact bracket. We discuss various kinds of Lax representations for such systems, in particular, linear nonisospectral contact Lax pairs and nonlinear contact Lax pairs as well as the relations among the two. Finally, we present a large number of examples with finite and infinite number of dependent variables, as well as the reductions of these examples to lower-dimensional integrable dispersionless systems.

Compacton solutions and (non)integrability for nonlinear evolutionary PDEs associated with a chain of prestressed granules

We present the results of study of a nonlinear evolutionary PDE (more precisely, a one-parameter family of PDEs) associated with the chain of pre-stressed granules. The PDE in question supports solitary waves of compression and rarefaction (bright and dark compactons) and can be written in Hamiltonian form. We investigate {\em inter alia} integrability properties of this PDE and its generalized symmetries and conservation laws. For the compacton solutions we perform a stability test followed by the numerical study. In particular, we simulate the temporal evolution of a single compacton, and the interactions of compacton pairs. The results of numerical simulations performed for our model are compared with the numerical evolution of corresponding Cauchy data for the discrete model of chain of pre-stressed elastic granules.

Integrable (3+1)-dimensional systems with rational Lax pairs

The search for new integrable (3+1)-dimensional partial differential systems is among the most important challenges in the modern integrability theory. It turns out that such a system can be associated to any pair of rational functions of one variable in general position, as established below using contact Lax pairs introduced in arXiv:1401.2122.

New integrable (3+1)-dimensional systems and contact geometry

We introduce a novel systematic construction for integrable (3+1)-dimensional dispersionless systems using nonisospectral Lax pairs that involve contact vector fields. In particular, we present new large classes of (3+1)-dimensional integrable dispersionless systems associated to the Lax pairs which are polynomial and rational in the spectral parameter.

Recursion Operators for Multidimensional Integrable PDEs

We present a novel construction of recursion operators for scalar second-order integrable multidimensional PDEs with isospectral Lax pairs written in terms of first-order scalar differential operators. Our approach is quite straightforward and can be readily applied using modern computer algebra software. It is illustrated by examples, two of which are new.

A Simple Construction of Recursion Operators for Multidimensional Dispersionless Integrable Systems

We present a simple novel construction of recursion operators for integrable multidimensional dispersionless systems that admit a Lax pair whose operators are linear in the spectral parameter and do not involve the derivatives with respect to the latter. New examples of recursion operators obtained using our technique include {\em inter alia} those for the general heavenly equation, which describes a class of anti-self-dual solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, and a six-dimensional equation resulting from a system of Ferapontov and Khusnutdinova.

Infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws for the $ABC$ equation with $A+B+C\neq 0$

We construct an infinite hierarchy of nonlocal conservation laws for the $ABC$ equation $A u_t\,u_{xy}+B u_x\,u_{ty}+C u_y\,u_{tx} = 0$, where $A,B,C$ are constants and $A+B+C\neq 0$, using a nonisospectral Lax pair. As a byproduct, we present new coverings for the ABC equation. The method of proof of nontriviality of the conservation laws under study is quite general and can be applied to many other integrable multidimensional systems.

The four-dimensional Martinez Alonso--Shabat equation: reductions and nonlocal symmetries

We consider the four-dimensional integrable Martinez Alonso--Shabat equation, and list three integrable three-dimensional reductions thereof. We also present a four-dimensional integrable modified Martinez Alonso--Shabat equation together with its Lax pair. We also construct an infinite hierarchy of commuting nonlocal symmetries (and not just the shadows, as it is usually the case in the literature) for the Martinez Alonso--Shabat equation.

Coupling constant metamorphosis as an integrability-preserving transformation for general finite-dimensional dynamical systems and ODEs

In the present paper we extend the multiparameter coupling constant metamorphosis, also known as the generalized Stäckel transform, from Hamiltonian dynamical systems to general finite-dimensional dynamical systems and ODEs. This transform interchanges the values of integrals of motion with the parameters these integrals depend on but leaves the phase space coordinates intact. Sufficient conditions under which the transformation in question preserves integrability and a simple formula relating the solutions of the original system to those of the transformed one are given.

Recursion operators for dispersionless integrable systems in any dimension

We present a new approach to construction of recursion operators for multidimensional integrable systems which have a Lax-type representation in terms of a pair of commuting vector fields. It is illustrated by the examples of the Manakov--Santini system which is a hyperbolic system in N dependent and N + 4 independent variables, where N is an arbitrary natural number, the six-dimensional generalization of the first heavenly equation, the modified heavenly equation, and the dispersionless Hirota equation.
